Chapter 30: Qi Hanchuan is Jealous
Perhaps Xie Yunting’s resistance had been effective, as the Fang family had made no further moves. However, Fang Zhiyi continued to stay at the home of Jiang He and Qi Hanchuan. Lately, Jiang He and Fang Zhiyi had been like conjoined twins, going everywhere together.
Upon hearing they were invited to Xie Yunting’s birthday banquet, Fang Zhiyi instinctively refused. He disliked such occasions; though he had longed for them as a child, he now had zero interest.
Jiang He, holding a few-month-old puppy in his arms, looked up at Fang Zhiyi. “Listen to me. We’re using this chance to let everyone in Sea City know you’re my best friend and Qi Hanchuan’s brother-in-law. That way, whether it’s the Fangs, the Wangs, or the Lees, no one will dare plot against you again.”
That was the real reason he had agreed to attend to show the world that Fang Zhiyi was not someone to be trifled with.
Jiang He sensed the unease in Fang Zhiyi’s eyes and reassured him: “I’ll be there, and Qi Hanchuan is going too. Nothing will happen.”
Fang Zhiyi smiled weakly. “Alright, let’s go then.”
Jiang He cheered, then his smile vanished. “We have to stay far away from Xie Yunting. That guy is no good.” He remembered his last impression of Xie—a man who used any means necessary to get what he wanted. “He’s a playboy. A pure little white rabbit like you is exactly his type. We’ll just say hello for appearance’s sake; don’t believe a word he says.”
Fang Zhiyi couldn’t help but laugh at Jiang He’s expressive face. “Okay, I only believe you.”
Today, someone was coming to the rescue station to adopt a puppy. It was Qin Zheng, a junior student from Fang Zhiyi’s school. Over the past weeks, Jiang He had been personally picking up Fang Zhiyi from campus every day except when he couldn’t wake up, and he had eventually befriended the boy’s classmates.
Qin Zheng was a clean-cut, refreshing young man with a good personality. Hearing about the rescue station, he had asked to adopt a pup. Jiang He, after a strict background check to ensure no history of animal abuse, had agreed.
Fang Zhiyi noticed his junior had arrived. “He’s here. I’ll go down to get him.”
Jiang He stood up, dusting fur off his clothes. “I’ll come with you.”
They met Qin Zheng, who was wearing a clean hoodie and trousers a style remarkably similar to Jiang He’s. The boy was handsome, with a bright smile, and was carrying bags of premium cat and dog food for the other animals.
“Xiao Zheng,” Fang Zhiyi greeted.
Qin Zheng stole a glance at Jiang He and handed over the bags. “Senior, these are for the other little guys.” He had specifically bought this white hoodie because he noticed Jiang He liked them, though he didn’t think he could pull off the pink ones Jiang He often wore.
Jiang He didn’t notice the gaze and smiled. “You’re too kind! Adopting ‘Cotton’ is already enough of a help.”
Qin Zheng’s ears turned red. “It’s just a small token.”
Fang Zhiyi finally noticed the way the boy was looking at Jiang He. After a moment of shock, he coughed awkwardly. “Let’s go inside. Cotton’s vaccinations are finished.”
As they walked, Qin Zheng’s eyes were practically glued to Jiang He. Jiang He, being naturally dense regarding people’s feelings—or rather, used to everyone liking him—didn’t suspect a thing.
Fang Zhiyi, trying to nip it in the bud, asked: “Xiao He, is your husband coming to pick you up today?”
“No,” Jiang He replied while shelving the cat food. “I drove myself today.”
Qin Zheng’s eyes widened in disbelief. “You’re… married?” This person looked younger than him!
“Yup, married,” Jiang He said, raising his hand like a trophy. The massive diamond on his ring finger caught the light. “My husband gave it to me,” he added with a hint of pride.
Qin Zheng felt his heart die a little. How had he missed that ring? Was he blind?
Seeing he hadn’t received a compliment, Jiang He held his hand higher. “Is it pretty?”
Qin Zheng squeezed out a painful smile. “Beautiful.” He suddenly felt like an idiot in his carefully chosen hoodie. He looked down at his clothes, feeling like a “homewrecker” who didn’t even have a chance. He wanted to cry.
Jiang He, satisfied, handed a fluffy white Pomeranian Cotton to Qin Zheng. “He’s had a bath already. You can take him home; he really likes you.”
While Jiang He went to check on another cat, Qin Zheng turned to Fang Zhiyi, looking devastated. “Senior… I’m heartbroken. He looks younger than me; how was I supposed to know he was married?”
Fang Zhiyi sighed. “He is younger than you, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be married. Didn’t you see the ring?”
“I was too busy looking at his face! Who told him to be so good-looking? My heart is in pieces,” Qin Zheng sobbed quietly.
Meanwhile, Qi Hanchuan had decided to stop by on a whim. He stood at the door, watching the boy surrounded by kittens. Jiang He had his back to the door, with kittens on both shoulders and one on his head. He was talking to them like friends.
“Orange, you’ve gotten fat Milk, you too Blackie is still the prettiest Flower, your nails are long, let me clip them later.”
Qi Hanchuan chuckled. Jiang He spun around, accidentally knocking the kitten off his head, which he caught expertly. “What are you doing here?”
“Passing by,” Qi Hanchuan said, stepping in.
Jiang He’s hair was a mess and his clothes were covered in fur, but his eyes were sparkling. “You missed me and came here on purpose, didn’t you?”
Qi Hanchuan smiled but didn’t answer. “When are you going home?”
“Not yet. I have to go to the cat café to see the new hires.”
“Okay,” Qi Hanchuan said.
Jiang He frowned. “What ‘okay’? It’s the middle of the day. Why aren’t you at work?” It was only 3:00 PM. Was the CEO of the Qi Group skipping out?
“I skipped work,” Qi Hanchuan admitted.
“Uh…” Jiang He looked at him suspiciously. “Are you joking?” This man lived at his office.
Qi Hanchuan shook his head. “It’s the weekend. You forgot.”
Jiang He gasped. “It’s the weekend already?” He had been so busy he’d lost track of time.
“Mm. I’ll take you to the café and then we’ll go to dinner.”
“Fang Zhiyi is coming too,” Jiang He insisted.
Qi Hanchuan agreed, pulling Jiang He up from the floor and naturally fixing his hair and brushing the fur off his clothes.
As they walked out, they ran into Fang Zhiyi and Qin Zheng. Qin Zheng’s eyes were red, and he was staring at Jiang He with a look of mournful longing. Qi Hanchuan’s gaze swept over the boy, and his mood soured instantly.
Is this one of Jiang He’s ten ex-boyfriends? he wondered. Quite average.
“Oh, right. This is my husband, Qi Hanchuan,” Jiang He introduced blithely. “And this is Xiao Yi’s junior, Qin Zheng.”
Qi Hanchuan nodded coldly. Qin Zheng felt a massive wave of inferiority. Not only could this man afford that diamond ring, but he was incredibly handsome with the aura of a mature, successful man. Compared to the CEO in his tailored suit, Qin Zheng felt like a clown in his “special” hoodie.
Qi Hanchuan, feeling out of sorts, turned and walked toward the car. Jiang He followed him, chirping “Hubby this” and “Hubby that,” which only broke Qin Zheng’s heart further.
In the car, Jiang He noticed Qi Hanchuan’s icy profile. Are you angry?
No, Qi Hanchuan said curtly.
Jiang He frowned. When Qin Zheng came over to say goodbye, he noticed Qi Hanchuan had already gotten into the driver’s seat and looked deeply displeased.
How strange. He was fine a minute ago, Jiang He thought. He reflected on his own behavior and decided he hadn’t done anything wrong. So, instead of getting into Qi Hanchuan’s car, he hopped into his own supercar with Fang Zhiyi and sped off.
Watching the supercar pull away, Qi Hanchuan felt he was being childish. He’s just an ex-boyfriend or a fa . I am the legal husband. I shouldn’t give Jiang He a cold face.
Not good, he told himself. I need to fix this
