Chapter 28: Backing Up My Wife
The Fang family villa was located in the western suburbs. Jiang He had been there a few times before, but he hated the place and everyone inside it.
When the Fang family heard that Qi Hanchuan’s car had arrived, they assumed he was merely dropping off Jiang He and Fang Zhiyi. Finding the man himself accompanying them sent a shockwave through the household; Old Master Fang and the younger generation scrambled outside to greet them.
The moment they met, Old Master Fang wore a practiced smile, though a hint of ruthlessness lurked in the depths of his eyes. “President Qi, what brings you here? Is there something you need?”
Jiang He spoke up immediately: “He’s here to accompany me.”
“Young Master Jiang is here as well?” the Old Master said with a grin.
Jiang He loathed the Old Master’s hypocrisy. He had been tricked by it several times as a child, but he wasn’t so easily fooled anymore. Looking at the fake smiles of the Fang family members, he asked bluntly: “I heard you want to force Fang Zhiyi into an alliance with the Xie family?”
Fang Zhiyi’s father, Fang Mingyuan, stepped forward. “Young Master Jiang, this is a private matter of the Fang family. Even if you are close with Xiao Yi, it is none of your business.”
Qi Hanchuan frowned slightly. His gaze landed coldly on Fang Mingyuan, radiating an immense, oppressive pressure. Fang Mingyuan instinctively took a step back to hide behind the Old Master, silently wiping sweat from his forehead.
The Old Master’s eyes chilled. He had heard rumors of how much Qi Hanchuan doted on Jiang He. Furthermore, given Qi Hanchuan’s close relationship with Xie Yunting, if he insisted on interfering, this marriage alliance was as good as dead.
The Old Master made a swift decision, explaining with a laugh: “You’ve misunderstood. We called Xiao Yi back today for nothing related to an alliance; we just wanted him to stay home for a few days.”
Fang Zhiyi looked at the Old Master in shock. He couldn’t believe how quickly they had changed their tune barely an hour ago, they were sending him threatening text messages.
Jiang He had no good impressions of the Fangs and spoke with a sharp, biting edge: “I didn’t see you lot caring about him before. Now that you think he’s useful, you want to make amends? Your skin is truly thick enough to be a fortress.”
The Fangs looked embarrassed, but with Qi Hanchuan standing there, they didn’t dare show any displeasure. Instead, they had to maintain their fawning smiles.
“Don’t just stand there,” the Old Master said, shooting a cold glare at Fang Zhiyi while smiling at the guests. “Let’s go inside and talk.”
Jiang He threw an arm around Fang Zhiyi’s shoulder and waved a hand dismissively. “No thanks. we just came to see what you were up to. Since there’s ‘nothing going on,’ I’m taking Fang Zhiyi with me. My rescue station needs him to look after it.”
He wasn’t about to leave Fang Zhiyi alone in this wolf’s den. Who knew what they would do to him once the backup was gone?
Under the Old Master’s signal, Fang Mingyuan spoke up through gritted teeth: “Xiao Yi, it’s been so long since you’ve been home. Don’t you want to see your parents and your grandfather?”
Fang Zhiyi looked at Jiang He, then turned to his father. For the first time, he spoke up in defiance: “You were the ones who told me not to come back. You only want me here now so you can use me for the Xie family alliance.”
Jiang He had helped him so much; he couldn’t afford to be a coward anymore. He had to learn to fight back.
Fang Mingyuan was clearly stunned. Since returning to the Fang family, Fang Zhiyi had always been timid and submissive. This was the first time he had been so blunt. He really shouldn’t be staying with Jiang He, Fang Mingyuan thought. He’s picking up bad habits and disrespecting his elders. He needs a lesson.
As Fang Mingyuan stepped forward aggressively, Qi Hanchuan spoke two simple words: “Let’s go.”
“Xiao Yi, let’s leave,” Jiang He pulled Fang Zhiyi’s hand, turning back to warn the Fang family. “If you dare harass him again, don’t blame me for being impolite.”
He paused and added pointedly: My husband won’t be polite, either.
He glanced at Qi Hanchuan, who gave a slight smile in confirmation. Jiang He gave a huff at the Fangs and dragged Fang Zhiyi away without giving them a shred of face.
The Fangs were forced to stand there and smile as they watched the car drive away, every one of them wanting to grind their teeth to dust.
Inside the car, Jiang He noticed Fang Zhiyi’s pale face. He leaned forward and patted his shoulder. “Knowing that snake Fang Zhixu, he’ll probably look for a chance to drag you back. You’re staying with me for the time being.”
Fang Zhiyi lowered his head. “I’ve already caused you so much trouble.
“Tsk. Try saying that again?” Jiang He frowned. “I’m your best friend. If you don’t ‘trouble’ me, who are you going to trouble? Besides, I don’t see this as trouble at all.”
“Xiao He, thank you,” Fang Zhiyi said quietly.
Jiang He leaned over the passenger seat, poking his head toward his friend with a mischievous grin. “Are you crying?
Fang Zhiyi turned his face away. “No.
“You are! I saw a tear!
Fang Zhiyi wiped his eyes and didn’t respond. Jiang He watched him for a moment and then said seriously: “Fang Zhiyi, I won’t let them hurt you again. You’re my best friend and my family. So listen to me: stay with me for a while. They don’t have the guts to move against me.”
He turned to Qi Hanchuan. Right, Hubby?
Qi Hanchuan nodded. Mm.
Jiang He giggled and patted Fang Zhiyi’s shoulder. “See? You’re now the brother in law of Qi Hanchuan, the head of the Qi family. Even if they had a hundred times more courage, they wouldn’t dare.
Jiang He continued chatteringly: “I’m telling you, just block and delete them all. Don’t worry about school, either. I’ll have my husband put in a word. Even if the Fangs try to force a leave of absence on you, they won’t have the chance.
Even though it was a public university, Qi Hanchuan had donated two libraries to it. His word carried far more weight than the Fang family’s.
He talked non-stop until Fang Zhiyi couldn’t help but interrupt: “Xiao He, you really talk a lot.
Jiang He froze, then tilted his head and leaned against Qi Hanchuan’s arm, saying in a sickly-sweet voice: “Hubby, he said I talk too much.
Qi Hanchuan didn’t really want to get involved in this “war,” but seeing Jiang He’s pouting expression, he said solemnly: “Should I throw him out of the car?
Jiang He’s eyes widened. Seeing that Qi Hanchuan looked serious, he panicked. “Hey! You dare throw out your brother-in-law? Where is your conscience!
Qi Hanchuan suppressed a smile. “Didn’t you say he complained about your talking?
Jiang He immediately became protective of his friend, giving Qi Hanchuan a hard shove. “He was just saying it casually! Why would you take it seriously? I think you’re the one who finds me talkative and wants to throw us both out!
Qi Hanchuan remained as steady as a mountain. I don’t find it annoying.
The constant chirping is quite cute, he thought. Not annoying at all.
Apologize to Fang Zhiyi! Jiang He insisted.
Qi Hanchuan shook his head and laughed. Fang Zhiyi turned back quickly. “Xiao He, stop it.
Now you think I’m ‘making a scene’? Jiang He looked aggrieved.
Fang Zhiyi: I really shouldn’t have opened my mouth.
Jiang He talked the entire way back sometimes accusing Fang Zhiyi of being ungrateful, sometimes calling Qi Hanchuan cold-hearted, but mostly cursing out the Fang family.
When they arrived at the company, Jiang He was finally tired. He was parched and rushed to the lobby to drink a cup of water before leaving. He was heading to the cat café today, and Qi Hanchuan had the driver take them.
As they walked out, Jiang He continued his instructions: “First, you come with me to the cat café. After lunch, we’ll go to the rescue station together. This afternoon, wait for Qi Hanchuan to pick us up. You’ll stay at my place. If you have to go to school, I’ll be in charge of driving you. You must notify me immediately if anything happens.”
Fang Zhiyi looked conflicted. “It doesn’t need to be this much trouble. They probably won’t
“Tsk,” Jiang He frowned, speaking with the earnestness of a parent. “How could they ‘not’? You know what those people are like. They want to climb the Xie family tree; who knows how insane they’ll get? Just listen to me.
Fang Zhiyi was simply too pure, always thinking the best of people. Defeated, he nodded helplessly. Fine, fine, I’ll listen. But is it really okay to trouble Mr. Qi this much?
Jiang He thought for a moment. It’s only ‘trouble’ for him today. Starting tomorrow, I’ll drive myself.” Qi Hanchuan had plenty of cars in the garage; he could pick any of them. That way, they could go wherever they wanted. Freedom.
Fang Zhiyi teased: “Young Master Jiang is going to be my personal chauffeur?
Jiang He lifted his chin. “That’s right. You’re the first person this Young Master has ever willingly driven. Are you moved?
The heavy clouds in Fang Zhiyi’s heart were swept away by Jiang He’s words. He smiled and nodded. “Very moved.
Jiang He laughed loudly. “Good! I did it on purpose just to move you!
