- Chapter 78 - Even More Eerie and Suffocating
“Did you see his hand? Last time, I discovered that his hand could heal completely in just two days.”
Si Tang remained silent. She had noticed this herself earlier that morning, which was why she had fled in panic.
“And this test report.” Ling Xubai pulled a document from the files and handed it to Si Tang.
Si Tang looked down and saw it was a test report on pufferfish slices.
Ling Xubai explained, “The police have always been baffled and astonished, how could someone remain unharmed after eating toxic pufferfish sashimi?”
“…” Si Tang had initially thought it was a coincidence.
Ling Xubai stated coldly, “Because he isn’t human.”
“I investigated. That sashimi came from the same pufferfish, prepared using the same procedure, and similarly, it was never subjected to effective high-temperature treatment.”
“The probability of a human eating it and remaining unharmed is zero.”
A sickly gray pallor spread across Si Tang’s face.
At the same time, countless details flashed through her mind.
Eating raw food, low body temperature, consuming half a pufferfish without poisoning, an unnaturally rapid healing ability, and the strong possibility that he was monitoring her every move.
Surveillance.
The word suddenly magnified in her mind.
Si Tang jolted in alarm, her hair standing on end. Instinctively, she glanced around nervously. Noticing her unease, Ling Xubai frowned and asked, “What’s wrong, Miss Si Tang? Are you alright?”
He worried she couldn’t handle the shock after all, who could accept that their husband wasn’t human?
“I’m fine.” Si Tang forced herself to appear calm, though her mind was spinning relentlessly, making her dizzy.
The unease in her heart continued to grow.
Her phone had been vibrating incessantly on her drive over, but now it had fallen silent.
A silence that felt unsettling.
“What are you planning to do now?” Ling Xubai asked with concern. “I still don’t know what he is, how much of a threat he poses, or what his intentions are.”
“If you have any discoveries or clues, Miss Si Tang, we can discuss them.”
Si Tang couldn’t find the words to respond.
What were his intentions?
She desperately wanted to know Fan Yi’s motives.
If he truly was a monster, what was his purpose in wearing a human disguise, approaching her, and showing her kindness?
Were all those gentle and humble appearances nothing but an act?
Si Tang felt suffocated, as if an invisible net were dragging her into the abyssal tides, leaving her breathless and overwhelmed.
She hunched her shoulders, resting her forehead in her hands as if trying to calm herself.
As she lowered her head slightly, a fish-scale necklace slipped out from her collar.
Aside from wearing other accessories on important occasions, Si Tang always kept this necklace with her, just like the amber pendant her mother had left her.
The crescent-shaped, pearly white shimmer caught the light, instantly capturing Ling Xubai’s attention.
“This necklace.” He hesitated, his brow furrowing with a mix of surprise and curiosity.
Hearing this, Si Tang paused before explaining, “It inexplicably appeared by my side three years ago, after I returned from that island.”
Ling Xubai was a nationally appointed expert, highly respected and admired. Besides, he had once saved her.
Si Tang didn’t feel deeply guarded against him.
Ling Xubai’s expression turned peculiar, and he abruptly asked, “May I take a look?”
Si Tang froze, looking up to see the man’s sincere and gentle eyes.
“It seems to resemble something from the era of Atlantis civilization,” he said calmly.
Si Tang instinctively clutched the fish scale necklace around her neck, her brows slightly furrowed.
After a moment of hesitation, she removed the necklace. She too wanted to know more about the fish scale.
Just as she was about to hand it over, a hand abruptly appeared and clamped around her wrist.
The hand was pale as jade, its palm temperature both icy and familiar, causing Si Tang to tremble involuntarily.
In an instant, a forceful and domineering strength pulled her hand back.
“What are you talking about?” Fan Yi’s voice, tinged with a light laugh, suddenly cut in.
Si Tang stiffened completely.
Her neck turned like a winding clockwork, frame by frame, as she looked back and saw a face that was both familiar and strange.
Familiar because it was still that strikingly beautiful face, yet strange because of the expression it now wore.
It was filled with a sinister and treacherous aura, extremely dangerous.
Like a lurking beast finally baring its fangs.
Fear, like a tide seeping into her bones, engulfed her entirely.
“Fan Yi.” Her voice trembled, her eyes filled with terror.
Seeing her like this, Fan Yi grew even more furious, forcefully pulling her up from her seat.
“Darling, it’s time for us to go home,” he said with his usual gentle smile, now tinged with an eerie intimacy that felt suffocating.
Si Tang could barely breathe, surrounded by fear. The person before her bore no trace of the familiar warmth; he was clearly a complete madman!
Instinctively, she glanced at Ling Xubai, her eyes pleading for help.
“Mr. Fan Yi,” Ling Xubai stood up from his seat. “She doesn’t want to leave with you. Let her go.”
Fan Yi’s gaze coldly fell upon this human.
His eyes shifted slightly, taking in the bustling, crowded street outside the window. He refrained from killing the man on the spot, especially since he had no time to deal with him now he only wanted to take Si Tang back.
A glint of murderous azure flickered in his eyes, landing on Ling Xubai as a warning.
Ling Xubai was overwhelmed by the terrifying pressure, struggling to catch his breath.
So, this was his true nature.
Fan Yi forcibly carried Si Tang away. She instinctively tried to cry for help but found her body stiff and unable to speak, as if under some control.
She was completely enveloped in Fan Yi’s embrace.
Monster!
Si Tang screamed inwardly.
She couldn’t help but tremble, unsure of what this monster intended to do to her.
Behind them, Ling Xubai watched the direction where the two had disappeared, his expression gradually turning peculiar. The hesitation he had shown in front of Fan Yi slowly faded away.
He sat back down, leisurely sipping his coffee.
Just then, his phone rang, and he answered calmly.
“Dr. Ling, I’ve just confirmed that this Mr. Fan Yi did come to the hospital for a check-up in early June due to the pufferfish sashimi incident. The blood he had drawn was tested normally and later sent for disposal.”
“Where was it disposed of?” Ling Xubai asked.
“At the former medical waste processing center in the northern suburbs.”
Ling Xubai raised an eyebrow.
“Alright, I understand.”
He hung up the phone without any suspense, his expression thoughtful.
The soil hadn’t mutated; it had been contaminated by his blood.
As if piecing together fragments, he gradually assembled a. shocking discovery.
The man lowered his head, his gaze fixed on the needle marks dotting his arm. A faint, eerie smile gradually curled at the corners of his lips.
