After Swapping Identities With My Archenemy - Chapter 16
Chapter 16: Ghost in a Dream
A feeling of cold chaos instantly entered her mind. Her shoulders felt like they were being weighed down by a fifty-kilogram bag of rice, too heavy to lift.
But this feeling only lasted for a moment. She felt a warmth in her chest, which directly repelled the cold and bone-chilling thing.
She sat up instantly. The protective jade pendant on her chest had worked.
She had almost forgotten about it.
Seeing that the leg from above was still coming down, even a clay figure has a temper.
She was instantly furious. She quickly took out a windproof lighter from her pocket.
With a “click,” the blue and red flame shot up high and fiercely burned the sole of the dead ghost’s foot above her.
She heard a sharp ghost shriek, and the pair of snowy white legs quickly retracted.
The ceiling was dark again, and there was nothing there.
Shen Wensi gave her a thumbs-up from the side and said softly, “You’re amazing.”
Jiang Huaiyi felt a little embarrassed. Being a coward was something to be ridiculed by her former fellow disciples.
But with Shen Wensi, this was already a good thing.
She was about to speak, but Shen Wensi covered her mouth.
She pointed to the top and then put her finger in front of her mouth to make a shushing sound.
She gestured for her not to speak. The cold finger left Jiang Huaiyi’s lips, making her feel a little hot. After this feeling appeared, she didn’t think too much about it.
The two of them carefully looked up. She focused her attention back on the ceiling.
After the ghost above was burned, the behemoth in front of them also reacted. He restlessly walked back and forth in the room, but he couldn’t see the two people and one cat on the bed. He was a little annoyed.
He simply lay down under the bed, and lake water constantly seeped out of his body. The entire ghost wanted to shrink and drill under the bed.
The two of them knew they couldn’t wait any longer. Jiang Huaiyi immediately took out two paper ingots, chanted the “Zouyin Ren” (Ghost Walker) incantation, and burned the ingots.
The paper ash was blown up by a gust of wind. Soon, the door was opened by a gust of wind.
A familiar figure walked in. The smile on his face froze the moment he entered the door.
He looked at the two familiar people on the bed and felt what it was like to be scared for the first time.
The person who came was none other than the “Bai Wuchang” (White Impermanence) they had just met yesterday.
He let out a couple of ghostly laughs. He was still holding the paper ingot that Jiang Huaiyi had just burned.
He was so unlucky. He had specially found a far-off place to slack off, and now he had to run all the way here to collect some benefits, only to run into his superior and Jiang Huaiyi again.
Bai Wuchang immediately gathered the paper ingot into his sleeve and turned around as if nothing had happened, trying to slip away.
Jiang Huaiyi said excitedly from the bed, “Sir! What a coincidence! You’re on duty again!”
Feeling the gaze from behind him that was about to pierce through him, Bai Wuchang stiffly turned around: “Haha, yeah, what a coincidence.”
What a coincidence to run into a jinx like you.
He floated in, resigned to his fate. His pale face didn’t show any expression.
The fear of the “Huaxia” (Chinese people) was deeply ingrained in her bones and now appeared again. Even though she knew he was here to help her, Jiang Huaiyi couldn’t help but pinch the flesh on her thigh tightly.
She tried to calm herself down, but for some reason, pinching herself didn’t work this time.
She looked down and found that her leg was perfectly fine. Her hand was tightly pinching Shen Wensi’s thigh.
She looked up again and found that Shen Wensi’s face was already wrinkled in pain.
Jiang Huaiyi: “Are you okay?”
Shen Wensi gritted her teeth. Her words almost popped out of the gaps between her teeth one by one: “You try being pinched! Let go!”
Jiang Huaiyi quickly let go of her hand and rubbed it a couple of times: “I’m sorry, I really didn’t mean to. I was just too nervous.”
She felt that her face must be red, but for some reason, her lips also felt hot.
This feeling had lasted from just now until now.
But there was no time to think about it. Jiang Huaiyi watched as the Impermanence shook the chains in his hand.
With a “hiss,” he hooked out the ghost under the bed.
The shrunken ghost had now become a skinny man. The skin on his body was sagging, and his original appearance was unrecognizable.
He had shrunk more than ten times his original fat size. His height, however, was still the same. He looked like a long, thin bamboo pole.
The long “Soul-Binding Chain” wrapped around him. Bai Wuchang said with a “huh,” “This is a local ghost. How did he get here?”
“Fudiling” (a type of earthbound ghost) and a place live in harmony. They basically cannot and will not leave their location.
There are usually two well-known types. One is trapped in one place and lives in harmony with it. They cannot reincarnate, but after cultivation, they can escape their current predicament.
The other type is a suicide ghost, who needs to find a scapegoat to reincarnate.
They had encountered the latter, the ghost in the pond on Huaxiang Road.
But she had never heard of one that could run this far. This was beyond his range of activity.
That area had always been peaceful. Old man Zhang’s accident was one of the few accidents in recent years.
The moment Bai Wuchang hooked the ghost out, the tall, thin ghost turned into a black shadow and floated outside.
Jiang Huaiyi became bolder. She stuck her head out from behind Shen Wensi and asked, “Did he run away?”
Shen Wensi replied, “He should have gone back to the pond. This kind of soul usually can’t be taken away.”
Jiang Huaiyi pointed to the ceiling: “Sir, there’s another one up there.”
Bai Wuchang heard her and flicked his iron hook. It hooked nothing. A ghost locked by the “Soul-Binding Chain” should have been hooked even if it wasn’t in the same place. If there was nothing, it meant there were no more ghosts here.
It seemed that the one above had also escaped.
Most likely, there would be no more trouble tonight. Jiang Huaiyi sighed as she looked at the mark on her wrist. She guessed that if she didn’t solve it, she would be sought out again tomorrow.
After seeing that there were no other ghosts in the room, Jiang Huaiyi felt that Bai Wuchang’s face looked terrifying again.
When there were no ghosts, the Sir was the most terrifying ghost. Although she was thinking about the red bills, she still didn’t dare to get off the bed.
It seemed that between being greedy for money and being afraid of ghosts, being afraid of ghosts still had the upper hand.
Seeing that the person on the bed was not moving, Bai Wuchang floated out directly.
His retreating figure had a feeling of fleeing in a panic, as if he was afraid that if he was a moment late, he would have a massive hemorrhage under the “mighty power” of his superior.
After all, when Shen Wensi was present, he could no longer be considered Bai Wuchang but the God of Wealth.
By the time Jiang Huaiyi finished her inner conflict and mustered the courage to look up, she found that the Sir was already gone.
She sighed. It seemed that they were not fated today.
The early winter night was very cold, but the room no longer had that kind of eerie, unusual feeling.
After the two of them cleaned up the room, they walked to the main road at 2 a.m. and took a taxi home.
They didn’t even dare to pass the pond on Huaxiang Road. Jiang Huaiyi felt that she should go home, go to sleep, and dream, and ask her master how to deal with being marked by a ghost.
Jiang Huaiyi felt a burning sensation in her mouth the whole way. She looked at the rearview mirror in the car a few times, a little strangely, and found that her mouth had swollen up at some point.
She suddenly remembered the spicy dish from dinner. She looked at Shen Wensi, who was sitting next to her with her eyes closed in rest, and asked, “Don’t you feel a little burning sensation in your hand?”
Shen Wensi opened her eyes and looked at Jiang Huaiyi’s red and swollen mouth.
She hid her hand without a change in expression: “No.”
Jiang Huaiyi looked at her suspiciously, but she couldn’t find any evidence. The two of them just sat in the car and went home.
Jiang Huaiyi took out the fine silk cloth from her pocket and looked at it. She found that the message had changed again. Now it was “Huaxiang Road Pond.”
The date was “Zishi” (11 p.m. to 1 a.m.) tonight. It was still early.
After they got home, Shen Wensi seemed exhausted. She went upstairs and didn’t come back down.
Jiang Huaiyi’s mouth hurt a little from the swelling. She rinsed it with water in the kitchen and saw the dark things in the trash can again.
She couldn’t resist her curiosity and rummaged through the plastic bag.
A dark lump revealed its original appearance underneath: “Tiger Skin Green Peppers” that had been fried black, but the bottom was still green.
A pungent smell came at her. She saw a familiar packaging at the bottom.
“Wencui Residence,” the name of the five-star private restaurant where she thought the dishes tasted similar.
Jiang Huaiyi stood in front of the trash can, lost in thought.
She went back to her room with curiosity.
Lying on the soft and comfortable bed, she couldn’t fall asleep. The things she had experienced in the past two days were too exciting and completely different from her uneventful life of more than twenty years.
Just as she was about to take out the fine silk paper to take another look, a strong wave of sleepiness came over her.
Jiang Huaiyi’s eyelids were heavy. The moment she closed them, she fell into a dream.
The figure of the little old lady in the gray robe immediately appeared in front of her.
The first thing she said when they met was, with a smile, “Xiao Yi, are you tired? I brought your favorite melon.”
The little old lady was holding a snowy white melon in her hand. As she spoke, she cut it into small pieces.
The little old lady picked up a piece and was about to put it in her mouth.
For some reason, tears streamed down Jiang Huaiyi’s face. She had been worried and scared for two days and could hold it in, but she couldn’t hold it back when her elder asked her.
At this moment, all her grievances turned into sobs. She threw herself into the old lady’s arms.
She looked down and saw a clean, slender hand. The little old lady’s kind voice in her ear also became distorted and eerie: “Have a piece. It’s very sweet.”
The soft, juicy melon turned into a toad, which was constantly twitching on that clean and delicate hand.
