After Swapping Identities With My Archenemy - Chapter 13
Chapter 13: So, There You Are
The handprint on her ankle had faded a lot, but the mark left by this kind of ghost was difficult to remove in a short time.
He would definitely come back for her tonight.
Wherever she was, he would be able to follow.
She couldn’t go back to her uncle’s place right now, so Jiang Huaiyi decided to stay here.
The furnishings in this small room were very simple. On the wooden counter, there was an old cathode-ray tube television.
A thin wooden bed, a mahogany table, two chairs, a “huáng huā lí” (a type of rosewood) washstand, with a basin on it.
And an empty white wardrobe.
To be honest, Jiang Huaiyi’s first thought was to hide in that empty wardrobe. As soon as she walked to the side of the wardrobe, she felt guilty under Shen Wensi’s gaze and walked away.
Ever since Shen Wensi knew that she was afraid of ghosts, Jiang Huaiyi didn’t feel like hiding her true nature anymore.
Before, she had to pretend, but as soon as a new person found out, her emotions poured out like a flood.
After her nap in the afternoon, Jiang Huaiyi felt that her condition was much better, and she could remember some simple spells.
She set up a “hidden array” around the wooden bed. She held a willow branch from the “Zhiyang” side that she had taken before she came, broke half of it, and placed it in the southwest corner. She walked the “Yu” (a magical gait) from “Ming Tang” to “Taiyin” (specific points in an array), circling the bed three times, muttering incantations.
Shen Wensi watched her do all of this, a little confused. She put the cat in her hands and asked, “What are you doing?”
Jiang Huaiyi inserted the willow branch next to the bed and said, “I just set up an array. This way, when the ghost comes, we won’t be seen in this part of the bed.”
Shen Wensi looked at the willow branch and felt that it looked familiar, but she couldn’t remember where she had seen it. “Didn’t your master leave you any magic tools? Is this going to work?”
Jiang Huaiyi put her hands on her hips proudly. “Of course. Don’t underestimate my array. As long as the array is not broken, it’s more than enough to block a small ghost.”
Shen Wensi nodded. “There’s only one bed here. Where are you going to sleep tonight?”
Jiang Huaiyi’s body stiffened. She hadn’t thought about this question. The bed was so small that it would be very cramped for two people.
She turned her gaze to the dark space under the bed, thinking about the possibility of asking the other person to sleep under the bed.
She turned her head and saw Shen Wensi’s questioning gaze. She immediately gave up the idea. The other person was so nice to her. How could she ask her to sleep under the bed?
It seemed that she would have to make do. She resigned herself to laying a layer of oil paper under the bed. She leaned in and tested the height under the bed. It was just right.
The wooden board above blocked her view. After she went in, she could only see a very small view. She could see the door frame if she looked straight ahead, but she couldn’t see anything higher up. If she wasn’t careful, her feet might be exposed outside.
Jiang Huaiyi crawled out from under the bed again and suggested that they go get some incense ash and sprinkle it on the ground. This way, they could see if the ghost had come in and find traces of the ghost.
Of course, her “Tianyan” (Heavenly Eye) was open now. Although she could see him without the incense ash, ghosts were cunning. It would be bad if he used an illusion.
The large incense burner of Sanguan Temple had not been moved. The two of them shoveled two buckets of incense ash and carried them back to the room, sprinkling them carefully on the floor.
Jiang Huaiyi said in her heart, “Sorry, cleaning lady. I will definitely clean it up when I leave tomorrow.”
After sprinkling the entire small room, Jiang Huaiyi crawled under the bed. Shen Wensi exchanged contact information with her.
Then came the long wait. There was no cell phone signal here, so she started playing Snake.
Xiao Die squatted beside her, hiding under the bed with her. But it was completely silent behind her.
Jiang Huaiyi was a little curious. Shouldn’t cats make a purring sound when they nap?
Why was Xiao Die so quiet? She had rubbed her head against her affectionately when she saw her just now.
She took her eyes off the small screen in her hand and turned over with some difficulty. The fluffy Xiao Die behind her was gone.
She stuck her head out and saw a yellow cat’s tail hanging down from above, the tip of the tail slightly hooked.
Jiang Huaiyi immediately understood that this cowardly cat had “defected.” It had actually gone up to the bed.
Leaving her alone under the bed, Jiang Huaiyi tugged at Xiao Die’s tail: “Xiao Die, if you leave, what will I do under the bed by myself?”
The cat ignored her and mercilessly flicked its tail up.
Jiang Huaiyi shrank back under the bed in frustration, using her bag as a pillow and looking outside.
In a daze, she thought she heard a “tap, tap” sound coming from outside, getting closer.
With a grating “creak,” Jiang Huaiyi quickly covered her mouth. The door to the room was opened.
The cold moonlight from outside poured in, illuminating the ground in a ghostly green and blue. Jiang Huaiyi quickly looked at her phone and found that it was midnight.
Nothing good ever happens when a person is awake in the middle of the night. She wished she was asleep right now and couldn’t see these things.
She was even more afraid when she was awake. She stared at the door without blinking, afraid of missing any detail.
A thin layer of sweat seeped out of her back. What was more terrifying than seeing a ghost was a ghost disappearing in the room.
The wooden door slammed hard against the wall next to it, kicking up a huge cloud of dust.
In the swirling smoke, Jiang Huaiyi saw a pair of swollen feet walking in on tiptoes, almost perpendicular to the ground.
The pale, swollen feet had already developed “Giants’ View,” looking like a blown-up white plastic balloon. Every inch of skin was stretched.
She didn’t know how many days the person had been dead. He no longer looked like a human.
Jiang Huaiyi slowed her breathing. Although she knew that the other person couldn’t possibly find her, her heart still couldn’t help but beat faster.
The pair of feet walked around the room, leaving a few messy little round dots on the floor with their round toes.
As if he were looking for something, the ghost slowly approached the bed. From Jiang Huaiyi’s perspective, she could only see a pair of swollen feet getting closer and closer to her.
A foul stench seeped into her nostrils through the cracks of the wooden boards. It made her instinctively want to vomit, but she didn’t dare to make a sound.
She frowned and quietly shrank back. It was too disgusting. Why was she always the one getting hurt?
Logically, Shen Wensi was facing the fear directly and should be in a worse state than her.
But Shen Wensi was not afraid of ghosts at all, so this assumption was not valid.
Fortunately, that pair of feet only stayed in front of the bed for a moment before turning around and walking outside.
She let out a sigh of relief. As long as she made it through tonight, she would go back and get rid of the handprint on her hand, and the thing in the pond would not be able to find her.
The pair of pale, dead feet didn’t go far. They stopped not far away.
Jiang Huaiyi’s relaxed nerves tensed up again. She subconsciously wanted to reach for the willow branch.
But it was empty in front of her. Her heart sank. In the next second, she heard a “tap” sound, and a terrifying face appeared in front of her.
The person’s head was swollen into a ball. His face was covered in dark green fluid from decay, which was firmly stuck to his bloodless skin.
His eyeballs were bulging, almost bursting out. His lips looked as if they had been cut by a sharp tool, revealing his white teeth, which opened and closed as he said, “I finally found you. So, there you are.”
