Chapter 48.1: Dreams Come True in Fairy Tales, While Dashed Hopes Are Reality.
Wen Yue drove all the way to a deserted wasteland in the suburbs before stopping.
This used to be a villa district, but it was gradually abandoned because the surrounding facilities did not keep up during Star Capital’s second round of development.
The sky was getting dark. Shi Li looked at the villas outside the car window and was immediately reminded of the night she was hijacked by the space pirates, which was also in a suburban villa like this one.
Her chest felt tight, and her breathing became rapid.
“A Yue, what do you want to do by bringing me here?”
Shi Li asked with a pale face.
Wen Yue got out of the car, pulled open the passenger door, and roughly yanked Shi Li out of the car. Shi Li was afraid of the villas from the bottom of her heart. She pressed her back tightly against the car door, trying to find a sense of security.
“Shi Li, are you feeling guilty?” Every word Wen Yue said seemed to be squeezed out from between her teeth. Her delicate face had become a little sinister. She usually paid great attention to her attire, but she didn’t seem to care that one of the buttons on her collar had popped off. Her hair was a mess on top of her head, with obvious signs of being grabbed.
Wen Yue had a pair of round eyes. They usually looked very docile and innocent. But now, filled with rage, they were big and a little scary.
Her chest rose and fell with her rapid and violent breathing.
“Zhu Yunqi, she’s Silver Ring, isn’t she? You two already met, didn’t you?!”
Shi Li clenched the corner of her clothes.
How did Wen Yue suddenly find out? Did she accidentally run into them when she and Zhu Yunqi met?
Her fingers pinched the palm of her hand.
She calmly said, “I know who Zhu Yunqi is. You’ve mentioned her to me many times. But what is Silver Ring?”
“You’re still pretending.” Wen Yue was so angry that she laughed. “Hai Yao and Silver Ring were the two who saved you when you were kidnapped by the space pirates and anti-Federation elements. It’s a shame I never knew the real names behind their code names. And since Hai Yao was always the one who interfaced with the combat department, I never would have thought that Silver Ring was Zhu Yunqi’s code name… That’s when you met… Is it fun to keep me in the dark?”
So Zhu Yunqi and Lan Yang’s code names were Silver Ring and Hai Yao, respectively.
Shi Li felt a little more confident.
Wen Yue still didn’t know about the contract between her and Zhu Yunqi.
“Whether it’s Zhu Yunqi or whatever Silver Ring or Hai Yao you’re talking about, they saved me. They led that entire capture and they saved you, too. Wen Yue, if you’re upset because I knew Zhu Yunqi and didn’t tell you, then I apologize. I didn’t know how to tell you. Anyway, she’s leaving soon, so I just didn’t say anything. Is this really that important?”
Regardless of how Wen Yue found out she knew Zhu Yunqi, after forcing herself to calm down, Shi Li believed that if Wen Yue simply thought that she and Zhu Yunqi knew each other, it wouldn’t be too bad. Wen Yue and Zhu Yunqi had already talked openly, and both sides had agreed to cancel the engagement. So, it shouldn’t be something worth getting so angry about for Wen Yue that her “fiancée” and “girlfriend” knew each other.
So Zhu Yunqi thought that Wen Yue’s outburst should be because she hid the fact that she knew Zhu Yunqi from her. Wen Yue saw this as a betrayal.
Wen Yue suddenly grabbed her hair and screamed.
Then, she stepped forward, raised her hand, and grabbed Shi Li’s collar. Her lips were dry. “Just knowing each other?”
She lowered her head, and the hand that was grabbing Shi Li couldn’t stop trembling.
She seemed to be in unbearable pain. “You and Zhu Yunqi… did you sleep together?”
“What are you talking about!” Shi Li used all her strength to push Wen Yue away. She was filled with grievance and anger. “Wen Yue, do you not need evidence to spread rumors?”
“I heard everything!” Wen Yue lunged at her again. She was like a beast that had lost its mind, pressing Shi Li against the car door. One of her hands went into Shi Li’s collar, which was now wide open from being pulled, and grabbed the fragile skin on the back of the Omega’s neck. Shi Li’s gland, which had just been injected with Alpha repressor, was still slightly swollen. When Wen Yue squeezed it, she let out a short cry of pain.
“Wen Yue, you’re hurting me!”
“Did you two go to a hotel last night? Did Zhu Yunqi bite you?! You don’t remember what happened before you were bitten… Did you do it? Did she mark you? If not, why are you afraid to show me your gland?”
Wen Yue was stronger than Shi Li. Her judgment clouded by anger, she didn’t know her own strength. Ignoring Shi Li’s painful cries and attempts to stop her, Wen Yue forcibly twisted Shi Li around so that she was facing away from her. Then, she ruthlessly tore open Shi Li’s collar.
A large patch of fair skin came into view. On her smooth and clean back and neck, there were a few red marks that had just been pinched. The surface of the gland was also smooth, with no signs of being bitten or marked, except for a barely visible needle hole.
Wen Yue stared blankly for a few seconds.
Zhu Yunqi didn’t mark Shi Li?
Her hand loosened, and Shi Li immediately struggled to turn back and raised her hand to slap Wen Yue.
The force wasn’t heavy. It landed on Wen Yue’s face, like a slightly heavier caress.
Shi Li immediately squatted down, clutching her collar.
Wen Yue’s rough actions once again reminded her of the dark night during high school. That night, that Alpha also mercilessly tore open her clothes and pressed her against the cold wall. The nauseating smell of the Alpha’s pheromone surrounded her. The big raindrops numbed her body, and she only remembered the pain that made her almost faint when her gland was bitten…
Shi Li was squatting on the ground, trembling. She closed her eyes in pain, put one hand on the back of her neck, and hugged herself with the other, constantly telling herself: It’s okay. It’s all in the past. She’s twenty-six now, not sixteen…
Just like how she comforted herself a month ago when she had a stress-induced episode in the hospital bed.
A trace of pain flashed across Wen Yue’s face, which was a frenzy of jealousy.
But Shi Li’s betrayal made it so she couldn’t walk over and comfort Shi Li in her arms like before.
She had to make Shi Li understand that no one else would love an Omega with a damaged gland. Even Zhu Yunqi was just playing around.
When she first heard Zhu Yunqi’s voice from the bug, Wen Yue didn’t recognize who the owner of the voice was. She just felt that the cold, slightly hoarse voice seemed familiar. She had secretly placed a bug in Shi Li’s bag out of anxiety, as if it was the only way she could hold Shi Li securely in her hand.
She wanted to know where she went, who she talked to, and whether her suspicion that Shi Li’s love for her had changed was just her overthinking or if it had really changed…
Wen Yue had also hesitated and reflected on whether her actions were too extreme and if they would disappoint Shi Li. But the panic brought by anxiety made her find a reason for herself soon after: it was all because she loved Shi Li too much. It was all because of her great love that she wanted to know every single detail about her.
If Shi Li loved her as deeply as she did, she wouldn’t even be angry if she found out about the bug.
However, Shi Li hadn’t carried that pink bag these past few days. Until this morning.
Another woman’s voice suddenly appeared next to Shi Li.
To Wen Yue, the things they were saying had already crossed the line of ambiguity. Especially when the woman said “bitten you” and “last night,” and even tried to persuade Shi Li not to marry her.
Wen Yue almost went crazy on the spot.
Shi Li cheated.
This thought lingered in Wen Yue’s mind. She couldn’t wait to find Shi Li’s affair partner and see what kind of person they were, to dare to steal her person. Shi Li was what she had gained after so much effort and giving up Zhu Yunqi. How could she hand her over to someone else?
The moment she stepped out of the combat department, Wen Yue suddenly remembered who that somewhat familiar voice belonged to.
Zhu Yunqi.
Zhu Yunqi’s voice was cold and unique, and it took her this long to remember. Zhu Yunqi was an Alpha, Shi Li was an Omega, and the two of them were together last night… The purpose of an Alpha biting an Omega was only one: to mark them.
Her girlfriend cheated on her with her fiancée and got marked.
The only two women with whom she could possibly have a marital relationship had both cheated on her.
Wen Yue was almost going crazy on the way here.
She coldly looked at the trembling Omega in front of her, using the cruelest words she could think of to sting her. “It’s because your gland is damaged that Zhu Yunqi couldn’t mark you, right? No wonder Auntie doesn’t want you to be with an Alpha and prefers me because I’m a Beta.”
It was as if this was the only way to make Shi Li feel the same pain as she did.
Shi Li was breathing heavily, adjusting her breath.
She had been hearing about her damaged gland for ten years. Shi Yu had gone crazy about her oversensitivity to Alphas countless times. She was already immune.
Wen Yue’s words did not hit her where it hurt.
Even hugging herself to comfort herself, she had done the same thing countless times in the darkness of the night.
She was a pro at this.
The only thing that surprised her was that the person using such unbearable words to describe her was Wen Yue.
But it was only a tiny bit of a surprise. Everything between her and Wen Yue had long since changed. Their feelings had changed, and the people themselves had changed.
“First, Zhu Yunqi and I are just friends. I was just taking her back to her hotel. She wasn’t lucid after drinking and accidentally bit my finger once. Second, Wen Yue, if I really did fall for Zhu Yunqi as you said, then I should have married her by now. You and I both know that, for me, her conditions are better than yours. The Federation has legal protection for Omega marriages. If I married her, could your engagement still continue?”
Shi Li spoke slowly, word by word.
After being together for so long, Shi Li naturally knew what would provoke Wen Yue. Wen Yue hated it when a competitor had better conditions than her. When it came to those topics, she would easily break down.
The person she once loved the most also knew where to stab to cause the most pain.
As expected, Wen Yue punched the car door, and it immediately drew blood.
Shi Li swallowed the metallic taste that surged into her mouth.
She continued, “Lastly, Wen Yue, it was wrong of me not to tell you that I knew Zhu Yunqi. You can criticize me for that. But to suspect me, to follow me, or to bug me—you’re the one who is disappointing.”
“It’s because I love you! Otherwise, why would I bug anyone else?” Wen Yue said in a broken voice.
Although she didn’t want to, she had to admit that Shi Li was right. Objectively, Zhu Yunqi’s conditions were much better than hers, both in terms of family background and as an individual. Just as she had a brief moment of attraction to Zhu Yunqi when they first met, it was very easy to admire Zhu Yunqi.
If Shi Li and Zhu Yunqi were truly in love, they could have just gotten married. Zhu Yunqi also wanted to cancel the engagement, and the Federation prohibited bigamy. If she married Shi Li, the Wen-Zhu family alliance would have to be canceled.
Perhaps Shi Li wasn’t lying.
She squatted down in front of Shi Li, her hands fiercely gripping Shi Li’s shoulders, with so much force that it seemed as if she wanted to crush her bones.
“Do you like Zhu Yunqi?”
Shi Li looked up, her gaze not wavering at all. Her painful and cold gaze made Wen Yue panic.
Shi Li’s lips were bleeding from her own biting.
“I don’t like Zhu Yunqi.”
As she said it, a strange pain gripped her heart. Shi Li couldn’t figure out where this pain came from.
Wen Yue trembled all over, with a bit of relief as if she had just survived a disaster, and nodded several times in a row. Her legs went limp, and she fell to the ground.
Shi Li doesn’t like Zhu Yunqi.
But… does Zhu Yunqi like Shi Li?
Those words, every single one of them, clearly contained an extreme, suppressed love that was barely held in check before her sanity fell apart.
The two of them sat on the ground facing each other. Shi Li bent her knees and hugged her legs, turning her face to the side. Wen Yue’s hands, which were on her shoulders, slowly slid down. She looked at Shi Li, who had curled herself into a tiny ball, and then at the sky where dusk was setting.
The clouds were especially thick today, and the sunset was unusually vibrant, a deep red like a bucket of venous blood had been spilled across the horizon.
It would most likely rain tomorrow.
Wen Yue slowly looked away and at Shi Li again. A thought suddenly popped into her head: The loser in this mess between the three of them could only be Zhu Yunqi.
She had to make Zhu Yunqi lose completely. Zhu Yunqi liked Shi Li, so she would make Zhu Yunqi hear Shi Li say with her own ears that they were impossible.
Her voice turned cold.
“I believe you. But Shi Li, you can’t see Zhu Yunqi anymore. If she looks for you again, you have to make it clear to her that you only have me in your heart. Otherwise, I’ll expose this recording—the daughter of Zhu Holdings coveting someone else’s girlfriend. It could ruin her for life.”
Wen Yue threw a small recording tape in front of Shi Li.
