Chapter 47: Since You Were There, Why Didn’t You Go in and See Her?
“Of course, if you truly love her, I won’t stand in your way. I will also,” Zhu Yunqi paused for half a second, “bless you two.”
“What I mean is, I hope you’re marrying purely out of love. And that I have no part in the reason.”
Shi Li asked, “Is this what you said was so important?”
Zhu Yunqi nodded earnestly.
After a moment of thought, Shi Li said, “I see. Actually, you could have just told me on the optical computer.”
“No, I think it’s very important. It’s better to say it in person. Besides, Wen Yue really isn’t as good as you think. I’m worried you’ll get hurt.”
Zhu Yunqi regretted her decision to find Shi Li back then more than anything.
“Zhu Yunqi, do you see me as your friend?”
In Shi Li’s eyes, Zhu Yunqi at that moment was very much like someone who was worried about their friend’s marriage.
Zhu Yunqi found that she couldn’t say “Yes.”
She answered with difficulty, “I don’t want you to be unhappy. Actually, Shi Li, you are…”
The Alpha’s eyes were a mixture of sadness and longing, forming a suffocating web.
Shi Li’s heart skipped a beat.
At that moment, the light for Dr. Ji’s consultation room turned on.
Shi Li grabbed her bag and got up, saying to Zhu Yunqi in a flustered voice, “I’m going for my check-up now.”
Zhu Yunqi swallowed the rest of her words.
Actually, Shi Li, you’re very special to me.
Looking at the “Currently Consulting” sign that was lit up, Zhu Yunqi lowered her head dejectedly.
If the sign had lit up a little later, would she have been impulsive and said the rest of that ambiguous sentence?
She only needed to wait a few more seconds.
But even if the sign had been a minute later, could she have really said those words?
Zhu Yunqi knew deep down that she didn’t have the courage.
Most likely, she would have a last-minute change to some nonsense like “You have to take care of yourself.”
Many tragedies, rather than being tragedies of fate, are tragedies of character.
So no matter whether the sign lit up early or late, the result would have been the same. It wasn’t the timing that interrupted her; it was herself.
…
Inside the consultation room.
Dr. Ji used an instrument to do a comprehensive check of Shi Li’s gland.
She nodded with satisfaction. “The condition is very stable. It seems that the Alpha’s pheromone is a good medicine.”
After all, a pheromone with a compatibility of almost one hundred percent was rare in the entire Federation.
Dr. Ji looked toward the door. “Is that Alpha here again? I saw her when I came over.”
“Yeah, she came to see me about something.”
“She doesn’t have to come to the hospital to talk about something. I think she wanted to come to the hospital to accompany you,” Dr. Ji said jokingly.
Remembering Zhu Yunqi’s hesitant expression, Shi Li hoped she was overthinking it.
“No, Dr. Ji, because of my work hours, she had no choice but to come to the hospital to find me…”
“Shi Li, she came to see you at the hospital often during the days you were hospitalized. But many times, she just stopped at the door of your ward for a while and didn’t go in. I ran into her several times when I was doing rounds in the inpatient department. Because she looks like a model, the nurses in the inpatient department have also mentioned her to me many times.”
Shi Li was stunned.
Zhu Yunqi had never told her any of this.
Since you were there, why didn’t you go in and see her?
Seeing the confusion in Shi Li’s eyes, Dr. Ji stopped there. Shi Li had been doing treatments with her for almost ten years. She knew about Shi Li’s resistance to Alphas, but she could also tell that the good-looking Alpha in the waiting area was different to Shi Li.
She put away the examination instruments, wrote the report, and then injected Shi Li with the therapeutic Alpha repressor.
Unlike the coldness brought by the pheromone stabilizer injections before, when the Alpha’s pheromone slowly flowed into her gland, what Shi Li felt was warmth and a sense of security. The pheromone seemed to have a huge magical power that made the world temporarily brighter.
Shi Li thought of Zhu Yunqi again.
The feeling Zhu Yunqi gave her was the same.
Five minutes later, Dr. Ji checked Shi Li’s pheromone and gland condition again. There were no abnormalities. She gave Shi Li two packaged pheromone injections. “The first two times, I had you come to the hospital because I was worried about an unexpected reaction. Now it seems like there are no problems. If you don’t have time to come next time, you can inject it yourself at home. Just push it into the gland.”
Shi Li took the pheromone. They were two transparent, shatter-proof glass tubes, each containing two milliliters of clear liquid.
She thanked Dr. Ji and left the consultation room. There were fewer people in the hospital on a weekday than on a weekend. She quickly found Zhu Yunqi in the crowd.
An indescribable emotion surfaced in her heart.
Zhu Yunqi was truly different to her.
A special relationship outside of being friends, colleagues, family, or lovers.
Shi Li stood still, quietly watching Zhu Yunqi, trying to find the answer that was on the tip of her tongue.
Until Zhu Yunqi noticed her gaze and also looked over quietly.
Their eyes met in the air.
They walked toward each other at the same time.
When she came to Shi Li’s side, Zhu Yunqi saw that the bag Shi Li was carrying seemed to be full of things, bulging. She offered to help Shi Li carry the bag.
It was an off-white handbag. The design was simple and elegant, and it was convenient to carry. Shi Li used it most often when she went to work.
Shi Li switched hands, holding the bag with the hand that was farther away from Zhu Yunqi.
“It’s not heavy. I can carry it myself.”
Zhu Yunqi awkwardly pulled her hand back.
She wanted to offer to drive Shi Li back to the Star Style headquarters again, but Shi Li also refused. The bus station nearby showed that the bus would arrive in two minutes.
Zhu Yunqi had no choice but to watch her get on the bus from outside the station.
The feeling with Shi Li seemed to be closer, and yet also farther away.
Not long after the bus left, Zhu Yunqi’s optical computer vibrated.
When she opened it, Shi Li had sent her a new message.
Shi Li: Zhu Yunqi, I also hope you can always be happy. If there’s anything you want to tell me, you should say it directly. You can tell me anything.
Shi Li: Actually, I lied yesterday.
Zhu Yunqi turned her head sharply, looking at the direction where the bus had disappeared.
Something in her heart seemed to leap lightly.
She looked up at the distant sky. The summer sun was bright and clear.
…
Tang Yingchi’s company had partnered with the Star Style Group for another advertisement.
Tang Yingchi volunteered to go out and deliver the contract herself. The person in charge of her department was especially lenient, knowing that she had friends at the Star Style Group, and told her she could get off work as soon as she delivered the contract.
The details had already been discussed by both sides, and signing the contract was just a necessary formality. Tang Yingchi quickly completed her task and went to find Shi Li to hang out. The pantry at the Star Style headquarters was famous for being good. It had everything from cola, coffee, and tea. You could even make milk tea to your own taste. The snacks were also from a dessert shop that replaced them on time every day.
As a team leader, Shi Li had her own separate workstation. Tang Yingchi sat next to her, watching her work on a robot modeling on her computer.
Tang Yingchi put a piece of mango mille-feuille into her mouth and felt that the model in Shi Li’s hand looked a bit familiar.
“Li Bao, this really has a Zhu Yunqi vibe. It doesn’t look like her, but the aura is the same.”
A mix of coldness and gentleness. Like a cold-blooded killer who would kill anyone in their way, but when they were with a certain person, they would be gentler than water and would wear an apron to wake the other person up for breakfast.
Shi Li stared at the screen. “Yeah, I used her as my inspiration.”
“Wow, that’s so romantic. Does she know?”
“I haven’t told her yet. I’ll ask for her opinion when I’m done. If she agrees, I’m going to enter it into a competition.” Shi Li didn’t take her eyes off the screen, continuously typing on the keyboard to improve the model. “What’s so romantic about it? Many designers’ inspiration comes from the people around them.”
“I don’t understand you designers. Anyway, I think it’s a very romantic thing to incorporate the other person into your work.” With that, Tang Yingchi rolled her eyes in frustration. “It’s a shame she’s a fan of you and Wen Yue. Seriously, I still can’t understand why she would ship you and Wen Yue. Lan Yang kept telling me that Zhu Yunqi has a crush on you…”
Shi Li suddenly thought of something. Her best friend was here, and she could verify it.
She paused what she was doing, turned her chair, and faced Tang Yingchi. Then she held out her finger and said to Tang Yingchi, “Can you bite my hand?”
When Tang Yingchi heard that, her mouth twitched. “Li Bao, are you crazy?”
Shi Li: “I’ll treat you to dinner.”
Tang Yingchi: “I will not be bribed by money.”
Shi Li: “Three dinners. Plus milk tea.”
Tang Yingchi looked at her for three seconds, then opened her mouth and bit her hand.
A dull pain came from her fingertips, and Shi Li quickly pulled her hand back. “You actually bit me!”
After she said that, she immediately used a tissue to wipe her fingers. Tang Yingchi spat and said, “Didn’t you tell me to bite you? Three dinners. I can take cash too.”
Shi Li looked at her hand with worry.
When Tang Yingchi bit her just now, she didn’t feel her heart skip a beat at all. And Tang Yingchi’s first reaction after biting was to spit it out.
It was completely different from when Zhu Yunqi bit her last night.
Maybe Tang Yingchi bit too hard?
“Can you try licking it?”
Tang Yingchi looked at Shi Li like she was a pervert. “You don’t have feelings for me, do you? I treat you like my bestie, but you want me to lick you?”
Shi Li also imagined Tang Yingchi holding her finger in her mouth and immediately felt a chill run down her spine.
She shook her head. “You must think I’m crazy. I’m going back to work.”
Tang Yingchi warily pulled her chair back and sat farther away.
When it was almost time to get off work, Lin Xiaonan took her team back to the design department. She brought over a pink rose, gave Shi Li her bag back, and patted Tang Yingchi on the head.
“Xiaochi came over again.”
She said to Shi Li, “Thanks to you for lending me your bag today. Everyone said my bag was nice when I went out and asked me where I bought it. I told them my bag got wet when I was eating lunch and that a super pretty young lady from our design department lent me hers. They were all so envious of me, hahaha.”
Shi Li smiled. “That’s because you have a good sense of style, Sister Xiaonan.”
“I didn’t lend you the bag for nothing. Here’s a rose. You’ve been looking so well lately. The pink rose suits you.”
Tang Yingchi also said, “Oh yeah, Li Bao, you look better than before. Your face is all rosy.”
Shi Li touched her face. “Really?”
She felt her skin was a little smoother and more delicate when she put on makeup recently.
Lin Xiaonan said, “Is it because you’re in a good mood? Especially in the last half month, you seem so happy every day. Even when you’re not smiling, your eyes are sparkling. Ah, it’s good to be young.”
With that, she went back to her seat.
Tang Yingchi stayed for a while longer. As soon as it hit five, she took off. She had an appointment with Lan Yang to get their nails done. Tang Yingchi was confident and had already bragged to Lan Yang that she would take her to all the hidden gems in Star Capital before she went back to the Black Star Belt to fix her mecha.
Shi Li stayed behind to work a little overtime. The Federation’s biennial robot design competition was about to begin its preliminary selection, and she was going to participate as usual. She won the gold medal in the last competition and was considered well-known in the industry.
To prepare for the competition, she had produced some designs over the past two years and would also pay attention to any flashes of inspiration in her daily life. However, after she met Zhu Yunqi, all of that became lackluster.
Zhu Yunqi was too radiant and stunning. By the time Shi Li realized it, her designs were already filled with her shadow.
At six-thirty, Shi Li turned off her screen and got off work.
Downstairs, she saw Wen Yue’s car parked by the side of the road. She couldn’t help but frown. She hadn’t arranged to meet Wen Yue tonight.
She walked up and bent down to knock on the car window.
“A Yue, why did you come without telling me?”
The car door opened. Shi Li got in and found that Wen Yue’s face was as dark as a beach before a rainstorm.
Shi Li had a bad feeling. “A Yue, what’s wrong?”
Wen Yue didn’t answer. The car sped away.
