Chapter 34: I Don’t Like It. I Don’t Like Shi Li and Wen Yue Holding Hands.
Shi Li saw Zhu Yunqi and Lan Yang in the crowd.
Two outstanding people together would become the center of attention no matter where they were.
Wen Yue also saw them.
She knew that the blue-haired woman next to Zhu Yunqi was one of the people sent by the Silver Serpent Legion during the last interstellar pirate capture mission, code-named Siren. At the time of the weapon delivery, there were two people, in addition to Siren, there was also one with the code name Silver Ring.
But she had never met Silver Ring in person. In the follow-up investigation by the Combat Department, it was also mostly Siren who showed up.
Zhu Yunqi was also from the Silver Serpent Legion.
And now she was with Siren again.
What was the relationship between Zhu Yunqi and Silver Ring? Were they the same person?
If they were the same person, had Zhu Yunqi and Shi Li already met?
Wen Yue quietly looked at her girlfriend. Shi Li was fully absorbed in watching the projected three-dimensional promotional video. In the vast, purplish-black interstellar space, artillery fire flew towards the Zerg and pirates, meteors fell, explosions flashed constantly, and mechs and starships shuttled through it all. The effects were so realistic that the debris seemed to be flying towards the audience below the stage.
Wen Yue looked at Zhu Yunqi and Lan Yang in the distance. They were standing in the crowd, diagonally across from her. They hadn’t noticed her and Shi Li at all.
Wen Yue was no longer interested in listening to the promotional content. Her state of mind was different this time compared to the last time she ran into Zhu Yunqi at the public restroom. Zhu Yunqi was far away, so far that she could only see a tall, blurry figure. Zhu Yunqi was like a crane standing in the crowd. Her cold gray eyes were empty, and the hairpin in her hair shone with a cold, hard light. She was a typical idealistic dreamer.
Wen Yue no longer yearned to see Zhu Yunqi. The dinner party where she first met Zhu Yunqi was like a dream that she had already torn to shreds herself.
However, she still felt a slight bitterness in her heart for willingly giving up a potentially brilliant future.
Her palm was a little sweaty.
Shi Li noticed this and pulled herself away from the promotional video, asking Wen Yue with concern, “Wen Yue, your palm is sweating. Are you hot? I have some cooling spray here.”
As she spoke, she took a small, light orange spray bottle out of her bag. Wen Yue let her spray a few times on her.
Her body felt cool. But only Wen Yue knew it wasn’t because she was hot.
Her heart started to feel guilty again.
Shi Li was so good to her. She was so busy with work, yet she took time off to come to this event with her. She would notice when something was wrong with her right away… She had to give Shi Li her whole heart as well.
Hadn’t she already decided not to marry Zhu Yunqi? Then she shouldn’t regret it.
She leaned in close to Shi Li’s ear and whispered, “Baby, you’re so good. I love you.”
Shi Li pulled away a little and said playfully, “There are so many people here.”
Wen Yue insisted, “Baby, even though I’m not an Alpha and can’t give you a pheromone mark, I will do everything I can to be good to you. I want you to know that my love for you has nothing to do with pheromones. It’s a love that comes entirely from my heart and doesn’t need the bonds of pheromones.”
“Okay, okay, I know,” Shi Li said in a cooing tone.
Wen Yue quickly pecked her on the earlobe.
In the distance, Zhu Yunqi’s gaze fell on Shi Li and Wen Yue.
She saw them clearly, so close in the crowd. The summer in Z3291 was very hot, but they would rather use cooling spray than let go of each other’s hands.
The light in her eyes dimmed and dimmed again, finally solidifying into a thick, dark nebula.
I don’t like it. I don’t like Shi Li and Wen Yue holding hands. I don’t like Wen Yue’s lips being so close to Shi Li. I don’t like them whispering to each other. I don’t like Shi Li smiling at Wen Yue.
She didn’t like any of it.
But she could only dislike it secretly in her heart.
Lan Yang was completely unaware of her Captain Zhu’s inner turmoil. She pulled Zhu Yunqi to look at the instructional mechs on display. “Captain Zhu, the teacher from our school just said that to make it more interesting, there would be a mech test flight. They specifically mentioned you. But you were on a call with some beautiful woman—how many Omegas do you have? Just kidding. You’ll do it, right? Bring honor to our alma mater! You were the first student to graduate with a perfect score. Everyone is watching you.”
Zhu Yunqi had already seen those mechs. The models were old, and the permissions granted were pitifully few.
However, a test flight wouldn’t hurt.
Wasn’t Shi Li very interested in mechs?
Zhu Yunqi said, “If the teacher asks me to go, I’ll go.”
Lan Yang laughed. “As expected of an outstanding graduate. The teacher just said she was very impressed with you. It’s just a test flight. You should do some difficult, flashy moves to show off your perfect-score graduation skills.”
Zhu Yunqi continued to look in the direction she had been looking.
In the short time she had been talking to Lan Yang, only Shi Li was left in the crowd. Wen Yue was walking against the flow of people, stopping in a less crowded area, seemingly on a call.
And Shi Li was also looking in Wen Yue’s direction, with a focused expression.
Wen Yue arrived outside a less crowded cafe.
She answered the phone expressionlessly.
“Dad.”
Wen Lirong sounded a little angry: “Wen Yue, Lieutenant Colonel Li told me you took time off.”
Wen Lirong especially disliked Wen Yue taking time off during work hours. He wanted Wen Yue to be an excellent employee that no one could find fault with. Since she started working, Wen Yue had never taken time off, not even when she was sick. She even went to work as usual the day after she was kidnapped.
But she had actually taken time off for a private matter this afternoon. Lieutenant Colonel Li was Wen Yue’s direct superior in the Combat Department and also one of Wen Lirong’s subordinates. Any mistake Wen Yue made at work would be reported to Wen Lirong immediately.
Wen Yue quietly looked at the bustling crowd in the distance.
“Dad, I’m at the Aurora Plaza, participating in a promotional event organized by my alma mater. I only took half a day off.”
“What kind of event is so important that you have to go?” Wen Lirong clearly didn’t accept this reason. “Is graduating from the Interstellar Defense Military Academy something to be proud of? Don’t go back to the Combat Department. Come back home now.”
Wen Yue closed her eyes, holding back her emotions like she was holding down a fluttering bird.
“Dad, is there something urgent at home?”
“I hope you’ll stay at home obediently in your free time and not let anything else happen to affect your engagement with the Zhu family. I didn’t blame you too much for your sudden idea to postpone the engagement last time, but that doesn’t mean I will continue to condone your actions. That was the first and last time I will forgive you.”
“Now, I need you to go home and reflect on your actions.”
Wen Yue took a deep breath, her voice trembling slightly: “Dad…”
Wen Lirong had already ended the call.
Wen Yue opened her mouth, taking deep, heavy breaths. Her vision blurred. She raised her hand to wipe her eyes, leaving two tear streaks on the back of her hand.
She didn’t want to follow Wen Lirong’s instructions.
She didn’t want to go back to that damn job, go back to that cold home where even breathing loudly felt like a mistake, and face her suffocating father.
Before she had a clear memory, her mother had gotten seriously ill and had been recuperating on a distant planet. In all these years, Wen Yue had only been allowed to see her three times. She had never experienced the bond between a mother and daughter, and even when she saw her, she couldn’t muster any emotion. Facing a strange woman who could only lie in a wheelchair and express herself by blinking, Wen Yue couldn’t even bring herself to say “Mom.”
Wen Lirong was the only person in her life. She thought that everything Wen Lirong did was out of love for her, so she was used to accepting it.
Later, she met Shi Li and learned another way of loving, but she still didn’t think there was anything wrong with Wen Lirong. It wasn’t until Zhu Yunqi appeared and the engagement fell from the sky that she realized that Wen Lirong and Shi Li were a single-choice question.
The cold air from the cafe gave Wen Yue goosebumps.
Wen Yue stared at the call history with Wen Lirong and walked back into the crowd with determination.
…
Squeezing back into the crowd, Shi Li asked, “Is it your dad again?”
Wen Yue was sensitive to the word “again.”
Shi Li said as if it were a common occurrence: “Your dad often calls you to come back suddenly. Are you going back again now?”
Wen Yue’s tone suddenly became firm: “No. I’m not going back. Baby, do you think I’m a good-for-nothing who only listens to my dad’s arrangements?”
“Of course not,” Shi Li quickly denied. “Wen Yue, you’re amazing. Wen Yue, your dad doesn’t know that I’m with you, right?”
Wen Yue shook her head. She wouldn’t dare tell Wen Lirong.
Shi Li looked relieved: “Actually, I’m quite afraid of your dad. If he knew that I’m still with you and messing up your engagement with Zhu Yunqi, he’d probably kill me.”
Wen Yue let out a dry laugh and said he wouldn’t.
But she knew in her heart that Wen Lirong might really kill Shi Li. If she wanted to ensure Shi Li’s safety, she should first keep her distance from Shi Li, then find a way to completely ruin the engagement, and then, after some time, when everything was back to normal, get back together with Shi Li.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t help herself. Every day, she was on the verge of an emotional breakdown. It felt as if someone was constantly pointing a gun at her heart, and only by seeing Shi Li, talking to Shi Li, and confirming that there was a person in the world who truly belonged to her—that she wasn’t left with nothing—could she tell herself over and over again that choosing Shi Li was the right choice and that there was nothing wrong with it, and her symptoms would slightly ease.
Shi Li took out a tissue and wiped the sweat from Wen Yue’s forehead and palm.
The sweat was cold, icy, and sticky.
Not long after, the teacher hosting the promotional event announced that to give everyone a more intuitive look at the learning outcomes of the military academies and a closer look at the most common and important combat units in the interstellar space—mechs—and also to increase the visual appeal and fun of the promotional event, the outstanding graduates would personally operate the display mechs for a test flight.
The host teacher was inviting the graduates in attendance.
But in reality, many of them had only learned how to operate them in school. Their current jobs had nothing to do with mech operation, and they had almost forgotten how to pilot them.
Wen Yue’s light brain vibrated.
Wen Lirong had sent her another warning message.
Wen Lirong: Wen Yue, if you don’t start moving, do you want me to come and get you?
Wen Yue chose to read the message but not reply.
She looked back at the stage. A mech had already flown up at a low altitude. Shi Li’s gaze was burning, full of admiration and longing.
Wen Yue also wanted to be looked at by Shi Li in that way.
She remembered that she had also taken mech piloting classes and had even gotten an A.
So, on a whim, she said to Shi Li, “Do you like it? I can operate one for you to see, too.”
