Chapter 33: She Realized That She Didn’t Care At All.
On Friday afternoon, Shi Li and Wen Yue arrived at the event venue.
The location was a huge plaza in the Third Ring of the main city of the capital. It wasn’t the weekend, but surprisingly, there were a lot of people.
The top ten military academies in the Federation were all gathered here. The giant screen in the center of the plaza was scrolling with the slogan for the event:
The stars and the sea await your conquest!
Have you ever gazed at the boundless starry sky, with a desire to explore the unknown burning in your heart?
Have you ever dreamed of piloting a starship, traveling between the stars?
Have you ever dreamed of operating a mech, guarding the glory of the Federation?
Join the Federal Military Academies and become a guardian of the future stars!
In the open space, there was even a ten-meter-tall model of a starship and several mechs that were only used for educational demonstrations. At the entrance, there was a shelf with many special single-lens holographic glasses for the event. When you put them on, you could experience the military system’s light brain mode.
Shi Li and Wen Yue each took one. After putting them on, the system panel that appeared was indeed different from the light brain system they normally used. It was more concise and had a special “emergency command” section. Of course, these large-scale promotional events did not give visitors the right to use them; it was just to experience the system.
There were also many instructional videos and simulated combat scenarios in the Lower Star Region/Black Star Belt for a hands-on experience.
Wen Yue quickly found her alma mater, the Federal Interstellar Defense Military Academy. Diagonally across from it was Zhu Yunqi’s alma mater, the Federal Deep Space Strategic Command University.
Wen Yue couldn’t help but feel a little jealous. The Federal Deep Space Strategic Command University’s position as the number one military academy in the Federation was unshakeable. The second place was often rotated among several military academies, including her alma mater. She was just one step away from getting into the Federal Deep Space Strategic Command University. She had wanted to use Wen Lirong’s connections to pull some strings, but who would have known that the honorary president of the Federal Deep Space Strategic Command University was the Federation’s only Supreme General and the commander of the Silver Serpent Legion? Wen Lirong had no say in front of him, so she could only settle for the Interstellar Defense Military Academy, which was ranked second at the time.
Seeing her deep in thought, Shi Li proactively asked, “Wen Yue, what are you thinking about?”
Wen Yue panicked and said casually, “I was thinking about how I received the Outstanding Graduate award when I graduated.”
Shi Li agreed, “I remember that, too. Only two outstanding graduates were chosen for each major, and you were one of them for the Reconnaissance and Communications major. The principal personally presented you with your diploma. I even gave you flowers. You’re amazing, Yueyue.”
“Yeah, so many years have passed in a flash,” Wen Yue said with emotion.
However, with Shi Li’s praise, Wen Yue’s slight disappointment and jealousy were washed away by her girlfriend’s compliments. She suddenly remembered that Shi Li was also an outstanding graduate, and her comprehensive university was even more competitive, only choosing one per college.
Such an outstanding person, one in a million, was now by her side, her girlfriend.
Wen Yue quietly held Shi Li’s hand.
The event venue was very large. After walking around, they returned to the area of Wen Yue’s alma mater.
Wen Yue chatted with a few teachers who had come from her alma mater. There were also seven or eight other outstanding graduates from previous years. The teachers asked them to speak freely and introduce the advantages of their alma mater. The students all had good jobs. Some were in the Combat Department, some were in the Military Department, and some were in military industry companies, and so on. They could all serve as living advertisements.
While they were talking, Shi Li quietly fiddled with the holographic glasses on the side.
She found a team matching and coordination function. This function key was not grayed out; it was a normal green color. Shi Li clicked on it and found a series of codes. In the top right corner of the interface was a string of small text: “Number of people available for coordination in the current combat zone.”
The number was thirty-eight.
Shi Li opened the blank avatar field and created a temporary nickname according to the format: SL30250327-Z3291.
Her newly created nickname immediately appeared in the interface, and the number of people available for coordination in the current combat zone became thirty-nine. She tried again and found that only the chat and location functions were enabled. The other secondary functions were still in a state of permission denial.
Shi Li understood. This was a specific function set up for this event. Anyone participating in the event could join. The codes were the people who had come to the event. She could send a coordination request to the person who was best suited for her based on location. Because the public-facing functions were limited, Shi Li felt it was more like a StarNet community.
She opened the location function. Suddenly, many blue dots appeared in front of her. Some were moving slowly, and some were stationary.
A person with the code “YQ30270818-Z3291” sent her a “request for coordination.”
Shi Li glanced at it and clicked the X. She didn’t know what the coordination function was for.
A few seconds later, her light brain received a message from Zhu Yunqi.
Zhu Yunqi: Is SL30250317-Z3291 you?
Shi Li was startled. Since the photo incident last time, she and Zhu Yunqi had not seen each other.
Zhu Yunqi: I see you and Wen Yue.
Shi Li immediately asked Zhu Yunqi where she was.
Zhu Yunqi told her to agree to the coordination request.
Shi Li put on the holographic lens again and found that the same code had sent her a new coordination request. After clicking “agree,” one of the many blue dots in front of her turned red. The location showed that it was one hundred and fifty meters away from Shi Li at a height of three.
Looking in the indicated direction, Shi Li spotted a figure on a stage who might have been Zhu Yunqi. But at a distance of one hundred and fifty meters, she couldn’t really tell who it was.
Zhu Yunqi said, “We usually use this. Do you want to know what its functions are?”
The sound was transmitted to her ear through the audio connection on the holographic glasses. It sounded a little different from the sound during a regular light brain communication.
Shi Li couldn’t talk, so she silently replied with a “yes.”
Zhu Yunqi said, “Plan a rendezvous route.” She said it to the system.
But it startled Shi Li. She thought Zhu Yunqi wanted to meet up with her.
Fortunately, the red dot representing Zhu Yunqi on the projection didn’t move. A new route map appeared on the location interface, guiding both of them to their respective optimal rendezvous points.
Zhu Yunqi explained, “In a real battle, the system will take into account various factors such as speed, combat inertia, combat quality, and on-site danger to plan a route, and it will change at any time. When you need a teammate to coordinate with you, it will also recommend a teammate whose current combat position is slightly weaker and who can quickly come to your aid. If you have a teammate with good chemistry who you must partner with, you can also send a request directly to them.”
“Just like I just sent you a coordination request. Requesting a rendezvous is one of the most basic commands.”
Shi Li roughly understood. She had taken several elective courses related to mech unit language commands in college and had an impression of some of the terms, but because it wasn’t her major, she didn’t delve deeper into them.
“Can only two people coordinate?” she asked. She found that a third person was prohibited from joining her and Zhu Yunqi’s two-person coordination channel.
“No, it can be multiple people. Two-person and three-person teams are the most common, and four-person coordination also exists. With more people than that, it’s just direct squad action, and there’s a special in-squad channel.” Zhu Yunqi didn’t go into more detail.
Shi Li nodded slightly. She immediately realized that Zhu Yunqi couldn’t see her nodding and quickly said, “Mmm, I understand. So do you have a regular teammate?”
Zhu Yunqi and Lan Yang seemed to have a very close relationship. If Zhu Yunqi had a regular partner, she guessed it would be Lan Yang.
“I usually repair mechs by myself, as a lone soldier,” Zhu Yunqi said with dry humor.
Zhu Yunqi’s voice was calm and steady. She wasn’t amused by her own dry humor.
But for some reason, “repair mechs” struck Shi Li as funny. Her lips couldn’t help but curl up. “What about Lan Yang?”
“She has her own partner. Her partner is a Beta Alpha-type woman. Lan Yang would have to say ten things before she gets a single reply.”
As Shi Li listened, she thought that Zhu Yunqi’s life in the Black Star Belt seemed very interesting. No wonder she didn’t often return to the Upper Star Region.
They chatted for a little while longer.
Wen Yue’s conversation with the teachers came to an end. She turned to the side and, out of the corner of her eye, saw Shi Li staring at the empty space in front of her, smiling, as if she were looking at something very interesting.
Was there something fun about those holographic glasses? She had also put them on, and to be honest, they were very ordinary. She used similar panels every day at the Combat Department. Just seeing the single-lens holographic glasses gave her a strong sense of being at work.
“Shi Li.”
Shi Li answered, exited the coordination channel with Zhu Yunqi, and walked toward Wen Yue.
The teachers from the school saw that she was an Omega and thought she was a relative of Wen Yue’s who had come to watch the fun. The Omega looked exceptionally beautiful but was hard to guess her age. She could be eighteen or twenty-eight, so they assumed she was a high school graduate who wanted to apply.
The teacher advised tactfully, “This student, our school is only recruiting thirty outstanding Omega students this year, and the training is quite tough. You must be Wen Yue’s relative or friend. You can ask her about the course content first before making a decision…”
The Omega in front of them looked gentle and fragile and was not the type of person they wanted to recruit.
Wen Yue said, “Teacher, she’s my age. She already works. She’s my…”
Before she could finish, a promotional video suddenly started playing on the large screen in the center of the plaza, and the afternoon’s promotional event officially began.
The sound was so loud that everyone looked at the stage at the same time.
It drowned out Wen Yue’s words.
Shi Li didn’t hear how Wen Yue had introduced her to others.
Whether she introduced her as a friend, a colleague, or a lover. She realized that she didn’t care at all.
