- Chapter 7 - Affection Rising
“Affection Rising Affection Rising Affection Rising Affection Rising Affection Rising “
Getting into the car, Shang Keyu glanced at the time. “Sit tight. We’re already a bit late.”
Ji Songshu had just buckled her seatbelt and before she could react, she was pinned firmly against the seat by the acceleration. The engine roared like a sonic boom, and the giant billboards at the end of the road seemed to be hurtling toward her recklessly.
“Your current speed is 100km/h… 110km/h… 120km/h…”
“Ahhhhhhh—Shang Keyu, can you drive a little slower?!”
Ji Songshu’s voice was torn to pieces by the wind.
Only after Shang Keyu eased off the accelerator did she manage to hear her.
As the car slowed down, Ji Songshu remained in a state of shock. She touched her face and breathed a sigh of relief when she felt her prominent nose. Thank goodness, it was still there; she had thought her facial features had been flung right off her face.
“Do you have a driver’s license?” Shang Keyu suddenly asked.
“I do.”
“Good. If you think I’m driving too fast, you take over. I happen to have some urgent matters to handle.”
Ji Songshu rubbed her ears, thinking she had misheard.
The last time she had driven was at the driving test site for her Level 3 license, exactly one year ago.
Furthermore, she had secretly checked her phone; this was a limited-edition Ferrari. If she crashed it, she wouldn’t be able to pay for it even if she worked 9-to-9, six days a week, starting from the Qin Dynasty!
“I’ll pass,” she laughed strainedly.
But Shang Keyu wasn’t joking. She was the type of person who acted immediately once she had an idea. She pulled the car over to the side, walked around to the passenger side, opened the door, and smiled at Ji Songshu.
Ji Songshu felt that it was simply the smile of a devil.
“My driving skills aren’t very good, so maybe not,” Ji Songshu said with a long face.
Despite her verbal refusal, her backside was already firmly planted in the driver’s seat.
This was because Shang Keyu had occupied the passenger seat and even pulled a laptop out from the front trunk. She put on her glasses and began to work, the lenses reflecting scrolling spreadsheets and numbers.
Ji Songshu gripped the steering wheel, swallowing nervously.
“Do you really want me to drive your car? If it gets scratched or bumped…”
“I’m not lacking this one car.” Shang Keyu’s voice sounded as calm as a light breeze.
“But I don’t even know where we’re going.”
“Just follow the navigation.”
Shang Keyu tapped the car’s screen with her finger. Ji Songshu noticed she had removed her nail art.
Then, Ji Songshu saw the destination on the GPS, and her eyes widened instantly.
She never expected the destination to be here, and even less expected that Shang Keyu was the kind of person who would bring a date to such a place.
Beletopia Land.
This was a theme park based on the animation Toast Cat and Bagel Rabbit.
The animation told the story of Toast Cat and its partner Bagel Rabbit traveling across the Carbohydrate Continent to find their mother.
Ji Songshu had loved this cartoon most as a child, waiting punctually in front of the TV at six o’clock every day, clicking the remote to tune into the children’s channel.
When her parents were still alive, they would bring her here every year for her birthday.
“Have you watched Toast Cat and Bagel Rabbit too?” Ji Songshu looked at Shang Keyu with anticipation.
Shang Keyu nodded faintly. “Yes.”
“So the TV stations in Italy show Toast Cat and Bagel Rabbit too? They have great taste,” Ji Songshu said, giving a thumbs-up.
“I lived domestically until I was nine.”
Ji Songshu blinked. “Oh, I see. Then who do you like? I like Toast Cat the best. He’s a kind, brave, and strong little cat—the best kitty in the whole world! His toast is a flying carpet that can go anywhere… As for Bagel Rabbit, she’s an evil fat rabbit!”
Shang Keyu tilted her head, watching Ji Songshu ramble on with amusement. She raised her eyebrows slightly. “We should head out, otherwise we won’t have much time to play once we get there.”
“Oh, right.” Ji Songshu nodded, but when she turned back to the steering wheel, her mood instantly plummeted.
How was she supposed to reach her “paradise”? She pondered, casting a quiet glance at Shang Keyu, who was already immersed in work again. She covered her mouth and whispered to DeepLove:
“Great Artificial Intelligence, can you help me drive?”
A cold female voice replied: “I am only an earphone; I have no hands or feet. However, I can plan the optimal driving route and strategy for you.”
“Good, good, good.” Ji Songshu was overjoyed, focusing on the instructions in her ear while carefully placing her foot on the pedal—the one on the right should be the gas, she thought.
“Please turn the steering wheel 30 degrees to the left and hold for 5 seconds, then return to center and hold for 10 seconds, then turn 5 degrees to the right and hold for 20 seconds…”
“Huh?” Ji Songshu was shocked by this nano-level guidance, her expression freezing. “You should just shut up.”
“What did you say?” Shang Keyu looked up.
“Nothing.” Ji Songshu laughed awkwardly.
She plucked up the courage and drove slowly. Fortunately, the road was wide and there was little traffic. Shang Keyu didn’t rush her, and she gradually got the hang of it.
Most importantly, the car she was driving was expensive—very expensive, incredibly expensive. Any passing cars would automatically stay ten meters away, fearing they might even slightly scuff it or chip the paint.
In the distance, the destination came into view.
The words “Beletopia Land” were carved onto the archway, flanked by a chubby pink rabbit and an orange cat snuggled together. There weren’t many people at the entrance, just small groups, mostly adults holding children’s hands.
“We’re here,” Ji Songshu said.
Shang Keyu acted as if she hadn’t heard, still frowning at the screen, her fingers flying across the keyboard.
Ji Songshu didn’t disturb her and sat quietly. After waiting for nearly ten more minutes, Shang Keyu finally breathed a long sigh of relief, closed the laptop, took off her glasses, and pinched the bridge of her nose.
Ji Songshu reached out her hand, and Shang Keyu reflexively placed her glasses into her palm, saying “Thank you.”
“If you’re this busy, we didn’t have to come out today,” Ji Songshu said softly.
“As it happens, I’m this busy every day.” Shang Keyu tilted her head back. “You drive quite steadily. Let’s go.”
Ji Songshu followed her out of the car. Seeing the ticket window, her childhood memories were instantly revived.
She said excitedly, “I heard that if you mimic the incantations from the animation, you can get free Ferris wheel vouchers. Let’s go try it.”
Shang Keyu’s expression stiffened slightly before she was pulled to the ticket window.
The queue wasn’t long. Those in front were all parents holding their children’s hands; the two tall young women looked quite out of place in the line.
Finally, it was their turn. The staff member asked, “Would you like to buy tickets?”
“I want to perform the incantation.” Ji Songshu raised her hand. She looked at Shang Keyu. “Do you want to join me?”
Shang Keyu shook her head.
Staff member: “Please begin your performance.”
Ji Songshu took two steps back and stood firm. She raised her hands, assuming a pose, and began to recite with intense conviction: “Sleeping dough, heed my command! The fluffy magic has gathered here! Reveal your true form!”
“Hahahahahaha—” A burst of laughter rang out.
Ji Songshu turned her head, only to find countless eyes staring at her. One child was rolling on the ground laughing.
Her face flushed crimson instantly.
Shang Keyu made a gesture toward the child’s parent, who immediately scooped the child up and covered their mouth.
Ji Songshu tugged at Shang Keyu’s sleeve and whispered, “Do I look really terrible?”
She looked up, her cheeks covered in a faint pink powder from embarrassment. Her lips were ruby red, her thick dark eyelashes fluttered, and her eyes were misty.
Shang Keyu stared blankly for a long moment before squeezing out a few words: “It is… a bit childish.”
“Oh…” Ji Songshu muttered.
As she turned around, she heard a rapid-fire chant from her earphone, sounding like a skipping record:
“Affection rising Affection rising Affection rising Affection rising Affection rising Affection rising…”
Ji Songshu was startled. She covered her mouth and whispered, “DeepLove, what’s wrong with you? Are you lagging?”
“Value being read normally…”
“Really?” She didn’t believe it.
“The fluctuation in affection is calculated based on the other party’s heart rate, pupil changes, breathing frequency, and other indicators. The margin of error is within 0.1‰.”
Ji Songshu bit her lip and stole a glance at Shang Keyu. Her face looked as if it were frozen in ice—there was no reaction at all. The moment their eyes met, Shang Keyu quickly looked away, as if she were embarrassed by her.
The detection must be wrong, Ji Songshu thought. “Let’s just turn off the affection detection function.”
She began to reflect on herself. Did Shang Keyu prefer a more mature type? Should she have acted more sophisticated? But out of all the amusement parks in the city, Shang Keyu had chosen this one for their date, so she couldn’t hate the animation that much.
She understood her less and less.
