- Chapter 6 - What Does a Date Start With?
“It’s Burning Up”
When she reached the ground floor, Ji Songshu glanced around but didn’t see the black sedan that had dropped her off last time.
Her attention was quickly stolen by something else.
When a fiery red convertible supercar is parked there in all its majesty, it is truly difficult not to notice it—especially when an “alpha-style” woman in a black trench coat and black tie, wearing sunglasses, is sitting in the driver’s seat.
The sunglasses obscured most of the person’s face, but the exquisite bridge of the nose and the upturned corners of the mouth looked somewhat familiar.
Is that Shang Keyu? Ji Songshu wondered.
But looking again, the person’s hairstyle was curlier than the large waves she remembered Shang Keyu having, and the tips were dyed red. Surely she couldn’t have rushed to get a makeover overnight… besides, the car was different.
Ji Songshu convinced herself and calmly turned her head away to continue waiting.
The sunlight was exceptionally good that day, warm and cozy against her skin, making her feel like a quilt that was slowly becoming fluffy. However, as the minutes ticked by, she began to feel a bit dizzy from the sun and quickly ducked into the shade of a tree.
Ji Songshu shook her head, the cool shade clearing her mind as she began to worry: Did something happen to Shang Keyu on the road? Why isn’t she here yet?
The phone in her bag vibrated. Ji Songshu answered it, only to hear an impatient voice from the other side:
“Just how long are you going to make me admire your back?”
“Are you already here? I didn’t see you.” Ji Songshu looked around in all directions.
“You saw me, and you looked more than once.” Shang Keyu’s tone left no room for doubt. “You, now, immediately—turn around.”
Ji Songshu turned around and locked eyes with the “suspect” she had just ruled out as her date.
She gave an awkward laugh and hurried over. Standing there under Shang Keyu’s scrutinizing gaze, she forced herself to explain:
“I’m sorry. You look very different today compared to before; I didn’t recognize you.”
Shang Keyu’s expression froze for a moment.
(Favorability decrease warning! Favorability decrease warning!)
The alarm from DeepLove rang in her ears. Ji Songshu marveled inwardly, thinking how intelligent it was to actually detect favorability—she wondered what it used to measure that.
While she was dazed, Shang Keyu pulled her sunglasses down, revealing sharp, upturned ink-black eyes that stared straight at her.
“Miss Pei truly has a short memory for someone of high status. Only yesterday you were so determined to win me over, and today you can’t even remember what I look like?”
“You changed cars today. I’ve never seen this one before, so I wasn’t sure. Plus, I didn’t see your driver…” Ji Songshu explained slowly.
Shang Keyu’s face darkened further.
“I drove this car because I felt I didn’t need a driver, nor did I want anyone else disturbing us.”
“Miss Pei, I hope you understand that you are the one trying to please me, not me who is here to accommodate you.”
Under Shang Keyu’s piercing gaze, Ji Songshu felt like needles were pricking her back; she felt herself shrinking smaller and smaller.
Cautiously, she glanced at Shang Keyu’s expression and asked weakly, “I’m sorry. Can I still get in the car?”
“Since I’ve already come, I won’t make it a wasted trip,” Shang Keyu said coldly.
Having received the order, Ji Songshu obediently walked around to the passenger side. She reached out to open the door but froze.
The car’s body was perfectly smooth; she had no idea where the door handle was.
“How do you open this door?”
Shang Keyu leaned over to help her open it. As soon as she looked down, she saw Ji Songshu’s long, fair fingers resting on the car door, the sapphire ring shimmering brightly. She unconsciously curled the corners of her mouth, though she quickly pursed her lips tight again.
Ji Songshu settled into the passenger seat.
This was her first time sitting in such a luxurious car. Pei Jiyue also owned a car worth eight figures, but she never let Ji Songshu touch it; she would only purposely drive past her on rainy days to splash mud all over her.
She pressed her palms against her knees, sitting upright, then slowly leaned back into the comfortable seat, unable to resist feeling the texture of the genuine leather cushion with her hands.
At that moment, she heard a notification:
(Favorability increased.)
Ji Songshu was bewildered. She had just gotten into a car—how did favorability increase?
Did Shang Keyu usually encounter “backbone” types who said things like, “I won’t accept your filthy money” or “I disdain riding in your car, I’ll walk instead”?
Curious, she asked:
“How many girls have sat in your passenger seat?”
Shang Keyu seemed surprised by the question. She raised an eyebrow slightly and said, “Four, I suppose. Yueyue, Shasha, Qiqi, and Mama.”
“That many?” Ji Songshu exclaimed.
“Qiqi even sits on my lap sometimes.”
“Huh?” Ji Songshu’s mouth formed an ‘O’ shape. She truly couldn’t imagine Shang Keyu driving while holding a girl; that would be a traffic violation!
“Qiqi also chases after the car.”
Ji Songshu’s pupils shook. She asked in a trembling voice, “Is that when you break up?”
“It’s after giving birth to puppies.”
Ji Songshu almost wanted to jump out of the car. On second thought, Shang Keyu’s family was involved in the medical industry; maybe they had quietly developed that kind of technology…
Watching Ji Songshu’s ever-changing expressions, Shang Keyu’s mood improved significantly. She tapped her knuckles rhythmically on the steering wheel.
Only after Ji Songshu finished a round of mental gymnastics did she leisurely explain:
“They are the dogs I raise.”
“Yueyue, Shasha, Qiqi, Mama… where do the dogs start?” Ji Songshu asked with great precision.
“Starting from Shasha,” Shang Keyu said seriously. “As for Yueyue, she’s a big idiot.”
“You have so many pets.” Ji Songshu was surprised and felt a faint pang of envy, only to see Shang Keyu looking at her like she was a fool.
She suddenly realized—right now, she was Pei Ji-“Yue.”
She leaned toward Shang Keyu. “Go ahead and laugh at me all you want.” She then bared her teeth in a mock-fierce look at Shang Keyu.
Shang Keyu suddenly paused. She picked up her sunglasses and put them back on with an unnatural movement, a flush of red creeping onto the tips of her ears.
“Let’s go.”
Ji Songshu was stunned for a moment before sitting back to fasten her seatbelt. “Where are we going?”
Shang Keyu looked straight ahead. “First, to get you a change of clothes.”
“What’s wrong with my clothes? Are they not pretty?”
Ji Songshu looked down and finally noticed the problem.
In her previous movement, the neckline had slipped down, becoming quite daring. She whimpered inwardly and quickly pulled the collar up.
Shang Keyu wouldn’t think I did that on purpose, would she? This is like a tipped-over candlestick—it only caught fire by accident.
“What you’re wearing is barely presentable, but it’s not suitable for where we are going today,” Shang Keyu said.
“Where are we going today?”
“You’ll know when we get there.”
The kind of date spot a young miss would choose that requires a change of clothes… it was probably a high-end restaurant or a concert—the kind of upper-class venue. To be honest, Ji Songshu would rather go somewhere like an amusement park that offered pure joy.
She leaned against the car window, her long hair fluttering in the wind. Shang Keyu glanced at her silently through the rearview mirror, her gaze deep.
They soon arrived at their destination.
The car stopped in front of a shop. The store name was a string of foreign words she couldn’t understand. The European-style luxury decor was the kind that would definitely make Ji Songshu hesitate to enter if she saw it at a mall.
Before they could even get out of the car, someone came out from the shop to greet them, leading them inside with a smiling face.
Ji Songshu followed behind Shang Keyu. Not wanting to show any cowardice, she silently straightened her back.
They were led to a VIP area on the second floor.
In the center of the room was a red velvet sofa, surrounded by mannequins and racks displaying gowns. Soft lighting flowed over the silk fabrics, and dresses of various colors and styles shimmered with expensive light.
In a corner sat a black-and-white contrasting dress, elegant and harmonious like piano keys, with a ruffled hem like ripples on water. Ji Songshu was stunned by it at first sight and couldn’t help casting several glances in that direction.
They sat on the sofa, and tea and snacks were soon served. Only then did Ji Songshu remember she hadn’t eaten breakfast. She picked up a few small cakes and savored them.
The texture was silky the moment it hit her tongue. Ji Songshu’s heart fluttered slightly; she really wanted to pack some for Xiaoxi, but clearly, she couldn’t do that right now.
The store manager arrived like a gust of wind, her smile preceding her. She said to Shang Keyu, “Miss Shang, the new season’s collection will be delivered to your home tomorrow. Is there something you’d like to see today?”
“I’m here to change her clothes.”
Ji Songshu finished the food in her hand in a couple of bites and stood up to smile at the manager.
“And this is?” the manager asked.
“My younger sister,” Shang Keyu said.
Ji Songshu was astonished. “Since when did I become your sister? Am I that embarrassing to present?”
“I wonder who it was that didn’t recognize me just because I changed my clothes and my car,” Shang Keyu mocked.
Ji Songshu looked at her and said sincerely, “Then in a moment when I come out in my new clothes, you can pretend not to recognize me too.”
The manager’s gaze shifted between the two, though she maintained her smile throughout.
Shang Keyu turned to the manager and said, “Find her a few sets of sportswear. Something casual.”
Ji Songshu froze. Sportswear? Where on earth were they going?
The manager led her to pick out clothes. Shang Keyu didn’t follow; she just took out her phone and began taking calls.
Ji Songshu listened quietly for a moment. It was all words like “shares” and “mergers”—things she didn’t quite understand. She just silently marveled at how impressive it was to be a big boss.
The manager stayed by her side, introducing things incessantly. Ji Songshu had never been served so diligently while buying clothes; she felt quite awkward.
“I can look by myself.”
Taking advantage of a moment when the manager looked away, she tried to flip over a clothing tag. She searched and searched but couldn’t find that little piece of paper with the price on it. Her hurried hands were caught by the manager, making her so embarrassed she wanted to bury herself.
The manager simply smiled and said, “Second Miss Shang, President Shang is a major shareholder of our brand. Please just take whatever you like.”
“Oh… oh, I see…” Ji Songshu withdrew her hand sheepishly. She hesitated before saying, “Actually, I’m really not her sister. My surname is Ji… oh wait, no, my surname is Pei. ‘Pei’ as in ‘losing money’ (Peiqian).”
“Understood, Miss Pei.”
When Ji Songshu emerged from the fitting room, Shang Keyu was sitting on the sofa, staring intently at her phone screen, not paying her any attention.
It wasn’t until she coughed pointedly several times that Shang Keyu looked up. Her furrowed brows smoothed out as she squinted and looked Ji Songshu up and down.
“Who is this? I don’t recognize her now that she’s changed clothes.”
Ji Songshu huffed. “Now we’re even.”
She was wearing a deep blue tracksuit, covered from neck to ankle. Her original knit dress, held in her hand, looked as small as a compressed towel.
“Much better,” Shang Keyu nodded with satisfaction.
Ji Songshu looked down at her clothes. She truly didn’t understand—wasn’t a date supposed to be something else? Two people who like each other wearing beautiful clothes to show their best sides while spending a wonderful time together.
Why was she wearing a tracksuit on a date?
This tracksuit, which looked like a high school uniform, paired with Shang Keyu’s stylish black trench coat, really did make them look like an older sister picking up her younger sister from school!
If she were to say, she still preferred that black-and-white dress.
Her eyes couldn’t help but drift toward the dress, only to find that it had disappeared at some point.
Shang Keyu was whispering something to the manager. After a moment, she tilted her chin toward Ji Songshu. “Just this set. Let’s go.”
She grasped Ji Songshu’s wrist through the sleeve of the tracksuit. Ji Songshu was slightly startled as she was led away.
