- Chapter 24.2 - Flirtatious Interest
Finally back home, she stopped in the hallway and stared at the person in the mirror for a while. Then she turned around to observe the back of her neck.
There was a clear tooth mark.
Her heart was a mess, like a cat playing with a ball of yarn.
Suddenly, a thought rushed into her mind at high speed.
Marking… Shang Keyu marked her…
Would she get pregnant!?
Ji Songshu was terrified by her own thought. She immediately placed a long-distance call across the ocean to Ye Qingyu.
“Qingqing, what should I do? I might be pregnant.”
“WHAT!!!!!!”
Ye Qingyu’s scream, from her vacation in Bali, echoed through the room. She sat bolt upright in bed. “Niannian, speak clearly! What happened!”
“She marked me… she bit the back of my neck…” Ji Songshu stammered through an explanation.
“Aaaah!” Ye Qingyu let out a marmot-like scream. “Don’t tell me about your kinks! I don’t want to be part of your ‘play’!”
Ji Songshu was stunned: “What do you mean?”
After listening to Ye Qingyu’s explanation, Ji Songshu felt both embarrassed and humiliated, wishing she could dig a hole and bury herself. But she couldn’t help but wonder: if that were the case, why did Shang Keyu “mark” her?
Was it to get revenge for her biting Shang Keyu’s chin?
Or perhaps, had Shang Keyu traveled here from an ABO world?
Ji Songshu shook her head to toss away the absurd thought.
She couldn’t figure it out; she could never fathom what Shang Keyu was thinking. And when she asked directly, Shang Keyu wouldn’t give her an answer.
After thinking it over, she decided to give up on thinking.
She cleaned herself up briefly. The maid dress, the source of the trouble, was washed. She sewed a button back onto it and called a flash delivery service to send it back to the shop.
With everything finished, Ji Songshu curled up in her blankets and fell into a hazy sleep. When she woke up, it felt as if she hadn’t slept at all. She instinctively touched the back of her neck; the tooth mark was still clear and deep.
The room was quiet. Moonlight flooded in from the window, submerging the floor like a sea.
Ji Songshu couldn’t sleep. She walked out of the room quietly, and after confirming that Pei Jiyue hadn’t returned yet, she went to the piano and pulled out a new piece of sheet music.
In the past, whenever Pei Jiyue went through a breakup, she loved practicing the piano in the middle of the night. She would play songs from “Happy Breakup” to “Love Business,” singing loudly as she played: “Selling my love~ forcing me to leave~ finally knowing the truth, my tears fall down~”. She had driven away the neighbors above and below, so Ji Songshu didn’t have to worry about disturbing anyone.
Immersing her mind in the score, the piano music flowed like a stream, splashing against her unsettled heart. To calm herself down, Ji Songshu began doing transposition exercises.
Once she was immersed, she couldn’t even feel the pain in her fingertips or the passage of time. Unknowingly, the light outside the window began to brighten.
The sound of the door opening pulled her back to reality.
At six or seven in the morning, Pei Jiyue returned home. Her hair was messy and her facial features were in disarray; she looked like a piece of paper that had been crumpled up and then flattened out.
“What’s wrong with you?” Ji Songshu asked.
“I got dumped. Are you satisfied now?” As soon as Pei Jiyue spoke, she sounded like gunpowder.
Ji Songshu was shocked. They had only officially announced it yesterday—how could she be dumped already? The yogurt in the fridge had a longer shelf life than that. One day… this might even set a record for Pei Jiyue’s shortest relationship.
“Xiangxiang-Baby had other appointments today. It turns out I was just a customer to her. Because I paid a high price, she came out on a date with me.”
Pei Jiyue took off her coat, sat on the sofa, and said dejectedly, “It never even started between us.”
“But she called me ‘Yue Yue Bao,’ she would feed me, hold my hand and say she missed me… she even took Polaroids for me, wore the clothes I gave her, and remembered our exclusive gestures and secret signals…”
She spoke like she was reciting a tragic poem. Ji Songshu listened with her head propped on her hand for a while, feeling that something was missing.
After a moment’s thought, she pressed her hands onto the piano keys, accompanying Pei Jiyue with a sad, melodious, and heartbreaking background music.
“Xiangxiang-Baby, my Xiangxiang-Baby… she is so cute and so kind. She must like me, but she’s forced by the pressure of the shop to go on dates with other customers!”
“Why! Why must everything I like be snatched away by others?”
Ji Songshu thought to herself: How can you say “everything”? Since childhood, whatever Pei Jiyue wanted, her aunt would buy for her without a second thought. For example, this piano—very few parents would be willing to buy the most top-tier and famous piano for a beginner.
Suddenly, Pei Jiyue turned her face toward Ji Songshu, her sadness turning into anger.
“What are you doing?”
“Playing background music for you.”
“When did I ever give you permission to touch my piano?”
“I asked you before, and you said I could use it as I pleased,” Ji Songshu explained.
“No, you are not allowed to touch my piano.” Pei Jiyue suddenly changed her mind. “It must be because you touched my piano and stole my luck that I was dumped by Xiangxiang-Baby.”
“I’m going to ask Xiangxiang-Baby out again. You go to the shop and cover her shift for another day tomorrow.”
“I’m not going.” Ji Songshu refused categorically. “I went today and ran into Shang Keyu.”
“What?” Pei Jiyue’s eyes widened in fury. “Could it be that the person who outbid me and snatched Xiangxiang-Baby away was Shang Keyu?”
“Of course not!” Ji Songshu was speechless.
“But she was very angry to see me there, even threatening to break the engagement. You should understand the impact that would have on the Pei family. So I can’t go again. Also, the piano—she was the one who hoped I would play it. I hope you can at least cooperate with me.”
Pei Jiyue said coldly: “Breaking the engagement would be for the best. Do you really want to steal my name for the rest of your life?”
Ji Songshu was confused for a moment. Had her aunt not told Pei Jiyue that she was only filling in for a while and wouldn’t actually marry Shang Keyu?
This momentary lapse was interpreted by Pei Jiyue as a provocation, and she instantly flew into a rage.
“Shang Keyu, Shang Keyu, Shang Keyu! Your mouth is full of Shang Keyu. What is your relationship with her? You stole my name and my identity just so you could hook up with her, and now you dare use her name to pressure me?”
“I’m going to ruin your engagement. I’ll make sure no one wants you, and then I’ll have my parents kick you and that short-lived ghost sister of yours out!”
“With a shameless daughter like you, your parents deserved to die early! Go have a family reunion with them!”
Slap! A palm struck Pei Jiyue’s face.
“I will not allow you to speak of my family that way,” Ji Songshu said, panting. Her chest rose and fell violently, and her palm tingled from the force.
After that slap, both of them were stunned.
Ji Songshu looked at her hand in surprise. She hadn’t expected herself to actually hit her, but a sense of indescribable satisfaction welled up in her heart.
Since those two times in high school, she hadn’t fought with Pei Jiyue again. The one-win, one-loss war from the past had allowed their relationship to reach a delicate balance, barely managing to live under the same roof—you order me around, I feign compliance but act in opposition; a back-and-forth.
Now, that balance was broken. A fingerprint gradually appeared on Pei Jiyue’s face.
This blow seemed to shatter all of her fake persona. She suddenly became enraged, her hair messy and her eyes ferocious, like a bared-teeth lion that had been hungry for three days and nights. She lunged at Ji Songshu.
Ji Songshu tried to dodge backward, but she forgot that behind her was the heavy, immovable grand piano. Her back slammed hard against the corner of the piano and the keys, and a burst of chaotic, violent noise erupted in the room.
Ji Songshu fell onto the piano. Pain climbed densely up her spine. She struggled to prop herself up with the piano bench to stand, but Pei Jiyue gave her no chance, grabbing her hair and dragging her toward the floor.
There was a tearing pain on her scalp. Ji Songshu fell to the ground. Pei Jiyue took the opportunity to straddle her, looking down with a successful smirk, and began to tear at her clothes.
“What are you doing!” Ji Songshu struggled and screamed.
“Naturally, I’m going to let Shang Keyu see your true face! Don’t think I didn’t see—there’s a mark on the back of your neck! You must have gone out messing around with some woman!”
While restraining Ji Songshu, Pei Jiyue pulled out her phone, intending to take a photo of her in such a disheveled state.
Seeing the dark camera lens, Ji Songshu’s heart constricted. Her whole body resisted, and she instinctively swung her hand with all her might. Pei Jiyue’s phone was knocked flying, hitting the wall before bouncing onto the floor.
“My phone!” Pei Jiyue shrieked, but her expression quickly turned sinister. “How unfortunate—I just dialed Shang Keyu’s number. It should be connected by now.”
She shouted toward the phone by the wall: “Hey, Shang Keyu! I’m telling you, the person you fancy is just a piece of trash! She’s out dating you while being entangled with other women.”
“She loves stealing other people’s girlfriends the most. She won’t even let her sister’s doctor go.”
Hearing Shen Weiyi’s name mentioned by Pei Jiyue, Ji Songshu’s breathing suddenly became rapid. Chaotic and frantic thoughts raced through her mind. No… no… I can’t let Pei Jiyue keep talking like this. If this continues, everything will be ruined.
She desperately wanted to call for help, but Pei Jiyue’s eyes turned red, and she used her arm to smother Ji Songshu’s mouth and nose, pressing down with force.
She couldn’t catch her breath. Suffocation filled her brain, the color drained from her lips, and her wildly kicking legs stopped moving. Her face quickly turned a greyish-pale.
Just as she was about to lose consciousness, suddenly, the clear sound of a lock turning came from the door.
Pei Jiyue’s body stiffened. She mechanically turned her gaze toward the door. Ji Songshu took the chance to gasp for air, gulping oxygen into her lungs. Her vision was blurred and filled with tears as she also looked toward the door out of the corner of her eye.
