- Chapter 9 - Taking the Main Entrance? You Really Aren’t Afraid of Getting Caught.
“Jail break?”
“Impossible,” the man said decisively. “Don’t be fooled by the fact that these cells aren’t locked. The sealing array on the cell doors is fueled by the Sovereign’s own spiritual power. No one can break it except for him.”
The cell doors here were indeed unlocked. However, every closed door bore a red, circular sealing array.
Ji Chen, however, did not mean for him to break the array.
“I am saying, the surrounding walls are all made of stone and have no seals. Can we not just smash them to escape?”
“It is useless. The array does not just trap the door; the entire space is sealed. It cannot be broken.”
Ji Chen refused to give up. “Even if the array’s effectiveness covers the entire space, the spiritual power should be much weaker in areas away from the visible seal on the door.”
“I know that too. But even if you want to break the array where the spiritual power is weaker, you would have to use spiritual power to draw a counter-array.”
That hit the nail on the head.
Ji Chen suddenly had a wonderful idea for extending his lifespan. Was living another full lifetime not much better than just surviving for a few more months?
Ji Chen stopped responding and leaned against the wall, closing his eyes to concentrate. Sensing that Ji Chen had no further desire to talk, the other man tactfully remained silent and did not disturb him.
After an unknown amount of time, the jailer who had originally brought Ji Chen there reappeared. He was there to deliver wine to Ji Chen. However, the jailer did not open the cell; instead, he handed the wine flask directly through the gaps in the bars.
“Hey,” Ji Chen called out to him.
The jailer looked up in surprise. “Do you have any other orders, sir?”
“I want to be in the same room as the person next door so he can drink with me. Is that alright?”
“This,” the jailer looked troubled. “I am just a lowly jailer; I cannot make that decision.”
“Then ask your Sovereign.”
Not daring to offend Ji Chen, the jailer had no choice but to follow protocol and ask through the Left Protector. But this time, the Left Protector’s reply was: “The Sovereign is in secluded meditation, and even I cannot contact him.”
The jailer helplessly informed Ji Chen, “You cannot blame me this time. Even if I wanted to move you to a different cell on my own authority, I could not break the sealing array set by the Sovereign.”
Ji Chen had no choice but to let the jailer leave.
Once the jailer was far away, Ji Chen whispered to the person in the next room, “Big brother, are you awake?”
“I am awake. And you do not have to keep calling me big brother. My name is Yuan Yi.”
“Alright, I am Ji Chen.” After introducing himself, Ji Chen got straight to the point. “Can you stretch your hand toward me through the gap in the side bars?”
Yuan Yi was puzzled. “What for?”
“Naturally, it is to,” Ji Chen leaned mysteriously toward the side bars, already waiting for Yuan Yi to reach out, “get us both out of here.”
Hearing this, Yuan Yi’s spirits lifted, and he moved closer to the bars. Without a word, he tried to reach toward Ji Chen’s side. However, before he could touch the bars, he was stung by a sharp flash of blood-red light, forcing him to recoil.
Ji Chen encouraged him from the side: “Do not give up, Brother Yuan.”
Yuan Yi had no choice but to endure the pain and try a second time. It still ended in failure.
Ji Chen continued to entice him: “As long as you reach over, I have a way for us to escape this hellhole. You do not want to die, do you?”
Yuan Yi bought into the promise. He gritted his teeth and reached into the gap for a third time. This time, no matter how violently the blood-red light surged, he endured the pain, even though the agony made him groan and break into a cold sweat.
But despite his best efforts, he only managed to extend a single fingertip toward Ji Chen’s side.
Even if it was just a fingertip, it was enough for Ji Chen. He touched his own fingertip to Yuan Yi’s.
“Give me spiritual power, all of it!”
Yuan Yi did not know why, but even though the other person appeared to be an ordinary youth, his voice carried an extraordinary authority. It was convincing, leaving Yuan Yi with no choice but to comply.
In an instant, Ji Chen felt a steady stream of power flow from his fingertip into his wrist, then through his meridians, spreading to every part of his body. That old, familiar feeling finally returned, if only a fraction of it.
He had not expected this plain-looking neighbor of his to possess such strong spiritual power.
Having taken Yuan Yi’s spiritual power, Ji Chen immediately went to the spot furthest from the sealing array. Using his fingertip, he began to sketch and draw on the stone wall.
He was drawing a counter-array.
Yuan Yi realized his intention and was beyond shocked. “How do you know how to draw a counter-array? You would need a complete understanding of the original array’s structure and its distribution of spiritual power!”
Ji Chen did not have time to explain. Moreover, he could not tell him that this sealing array used by Gui Tong was exactly what he himself had taught Gui Tong.
Ji Chen drew rapidly. Although a counter-array was much harder to draw than the original, roughly ten times the difficulty, it was no challenge for Ji Chen. Furthermore, he was currently brimming with spiritual power.
As the new formation materialized on the wall, the original array on the cell door instantly dimmed, slowly turning into glowing dust and dissipating.
Yuan Yi mouthed to Ji Chen in pleasant surprise, “We can go!” As he spoke, his body was already moving impatiently toward the cell door.
Seeing that he was actually going to leave that way, Ji Chen called out to him, exasperated: “Taking the main entrance? You really are not afraid of getting caught.”
“Then?” Yuan Yi paused.
Ji Chen pointed to the wall in front of him. The meaning was clear: break through the wall.
But Yuan Yi was a bit worried. “Will that not make too much noise?”
“It is fine. Just carve a hole big enough for a person to crawl through.”
Ji Chen set to work immediately. After finishing his hole, he returned the spiritual power to Yuan Yi. It was not that he was too embarrassed to keep it; it was primarily because if he did not return it, Yuan Yi would not have the spiritual power to carve his own way out. He could not exactly dig with his bare hands.
Thus, the two of them actually carved two different holes. Ji Chen did not have time to wait for Yuan Yi to finish before fleeing; he did not want to stay in this godforsaken place for a single moment longer.
He said to Yuan Yi, “I am leaving first, Brother Yuan. Take your time carving.”
“Alright. Thank you so much, Brother Ji.”
Before leaving, Ji Chen did not forget to grab the wine the jailer had handed him. Thinking about bringing his belongings while breaking out of prison, belongings given to him by his captor, Ji Chen might be the first person in history to do so.
