- After Returning from a Faked Death, My Crazed, Rebellious Disciple Forced His Love Upon Me
- Chapter 8 - Is This Not a Clear Sign That He Thinks He Is Incapable?
After being stared at for a while, Ji Chen felt quite uncomfortable, even though he did not sense any unusual desire in the other person’s eyes. He had no idea what Guitong was actually looking at. That gaze held no warmth; it was like a sharp blade piercing into Ji Chen’s body.
After a long time, Guitong finally withdrew his gaze. “I will give you one month.”
Ji Chen had expected him to say “three days.” Having an entire month was incredibly generous.
“However, before that, I will imprison you for half a month.”
“Why?”
“The outside world knows that you have married me. If I let you go out immediately to flaunt yourself, or worse, to seek out other men, it would result in a loss of face.”
Ji Chen thought about it and realized it made sense. This was a clear sign that Guitong thought he was incapable. If word reached those commoners who loved to gossip, there was no telling what kind of elaborate rumors they would concoct.
Still, Ji Chen was puzzled. “Then you could just keep me by your side. Why lock me up?”
“I never keep anyone by my side.”
Ji Chen was speechless. What on earth? If you do not keep anyone around, why do you care about your reputation? Why do you care if people think you are incapable? Since you are so determined not to have anyone stay, why not just castrate yourself and tell everyone you are a eunuch? That would solve everything.
The Demon Realm, Stillwater Prison.
The dungeon was dark and cramped, filled everywhere with the stench of decay. It smelled even worse than the blood in the blood pool. Rotting corpses lay behind iron bars covered in magic arrays. There were even poisonous insects and beasts feasting on the decaying remains. More eerily, a few of the corpses looked quite similar to Ji Chen’s appearance from his previous life.
This was Ji Chen’s first time in a dungeon, especially one in the Demon Realm. He had not expected such a wretched sight. The jailer leading the way walked at the front, guiding Ji Chen deep into the dungeon. He pointed to an empty cell and said, “Go in.”
Ji Chen obediently walked inside. Before the jailer left, however, Ji Chen did not forget to say, “Get me a few jugs of wine. I am the person who entered a political marriage with your Venerable. Even if he does not like me, my status remains. I am your Demon Consort.”
Normally, Ji Chen would never have been able to say such words. He had a sense of shame. However, being forbidden from drinking for a month was more painful than being shameless.
The jailer was somewhat dazed, likely having never seen a prisoner who dared to make demands here. Most people were just grateful to be alive. However, the jailer thought about it and felt that Ji Chen’s words were reasonable. He did not dare to make a decision on his own, so he took the transmission jade from his waist and lit it with spiritual power. “Lord Left Protector, are you there?”
In an instant, a voice came from the jade. “I am here. What is the matter?”
“My status is low, so I cannot contact the Venerable directly. Could you please ask him? The sword cultivator who entered a marriage with the Venerable says he wants a few jugs of wine. Is it allowed? I do not dare to act on my own, lest I be punished by the Venerable.”
The Left Protector understood the jailer’s meaning immediately. “Understood. Wait a moment.”
After that, there was no further response from the jade. After waiting for about the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, a voice finally came through again. “The Venerable says it is allowed.”
“Very well. I understand. Thank you, Lord Left Protector.”
The jailer put the transmission jade back, and his attitude toward Ji Chen suddenly became respectful. “Please wait. I will go get the wine for you right away.”
As expected, in the Demon Realm, having someone to back you up makes a difference. However, Ji Chen did not expect Guitong to protect him forever.
As soon as Ji Chen found a corner to sit down, the jailer returned quickly. He not only brought several jugs of wine but also carried in a small low table and a few wine cups. Ji Chen frowned at the size of the cups. “Can you not get a bowl?” These tiny cups were only fit for raising tadpoles.
The jailer set the items down and immediately hurried back to get a bowl. Ji Chen could not wait for the man to return. He picked up one of the jugs, tilted his head back, and began to chug. The transparent liquid flowed down the corners of his mouth to his chin, then dripped onto his chest and collarbone. When the jailer returned and saw that Ji Chen had already finished a jug, he was dumbfounded.
After finishing the jug, Ji Chen’s face was not red and his heart was not racing, though he felt a bit tipsy. He waved his hand grandly at the jailer. “Come, come. Enter and drink with me.”
The jailer did not dare to disobey and was forced to drink with Ji Chen. In his entire life, he would likely never encounter another prisoner who forced him to accompany them in drinking.
Ji Chen became more addicted as he drank. After all, free wine tastes best when you do not have to pay for it. It was a pity that his drinking companion was not a beautiful girl. As he drank, Ji Chen eventually slumped over the low table and fell asleep. He did not know how long he slept before a voice woke him from his dreams.
“Hey, little brother.” “Wake up, little brother.”
Ji Chen propped himself up, knocking over an empty wine jug, which made a soft clinking sound. The jailer was gone. Aside from the dim, cold light, there was nothing else around. So, who was speaking?
“Little brother, are you really the Demon Consort? I heard what you said earlier.”
Ji Chen then noticed that the voice was coming from the neighboring cell. He turned toward the source of the sound and saw a young man with neatly tied hair. The light was too dim and they were not close, so he could not see the man’s face clearly, but he looked neither old nor very young.
The man added, “Are you very powerful? Otherwise, how could you be the Demon Consort?”
Ji Chen propped up one leg, rested his hand on it, and leaned back lazily. “Sorry to disappoint you, but I am useless.”
“Useless?”
“I have no spiritual root. Naturally, the Demon Venerable looked down on me and tossed me here.”
“Then why did he marry you?”
“It does not really count as a marriage. I was just making up a reason to trick them into giving me wine.”
“Oh, I see.” The man’s tone sounded disappointed.
“So, big brother, why are you locked up here?” Ji Chen was not a social butterfly, but since he was trapped here with nothing to do, what else was there but to talk?
“Me? Haha.” The man let out a bitter laugh. After laughing, he said somewhat reluctantly, “I made a mistake. However, I am about to be executed soon.”
“Was it a very big mistake?”
“Not really. However, as you saw when you came in, this place is full of rotting corpses. People who enter here are either executed or imprisoned until they die. Even after you die, no one cares about you.”
Ji Chen did not know how to respond for a moment.
“As for you, being allowed to drink wine while imprisoned means the Venerable treats you well. Perhaps he will let you out in a few days.”
This was not a lie, as they had agreed on half a month. Ji Chen asked again, “Have you thought about escaping? You cannot just wait to die, right?”
