- Chapter 6 - The Disciple Curses Him in His Heart
Xiao Qingyan looked up, a smile curling the corners of his lips as a bloodthirsty redness crept into the depths of his eyes. He waited with great anticipation for the demonic energy to enter Lin Sui’s body and cause him to die a sudden, violent death.
However, after waiting for nearly fifteen minutes, he saw no reaction from Lin Sui. Instead, the wind chimes hanging above the bed flashed briefly.
“Damn it! As expected, the villain is black-hearted!” Lin Sui thought to himself. Even after such a show of goodwill, the boy still wanted to kill him. This path to redemption was being strangled in its cradle! Why on earth was he trying to redeem someone who wanted to kill him at every waking moment?
“What is wrong, Master?” Xiao Qingyan asked. He withdrew the disappointment from his eyes, his face once again appearing completely harmless.
Lin Sui did not believe for a second that this person was as innocent as he appeared. Just a moment ago, the boy had tried to use demonic energy to kill him surreptitiously, intending to frame his death as a backlash from succumbing to inner demons. The execution was flawless, making it difficult for anyone to suspect him.
Fortunately, Lin Sui could hear the inner thoughts of the male protagonist. Otherwise, his mission would have ended in death before it even truly began. Lin Sui stood firm, though he was still shaken. His heart beat rapidly, likely reaching a rate of one hundred and twenty beats per minute.
“It is… it is nothing,” he said. He had not yet recovered from his severe injuries, and his voice sounded weak, like thin ice on a river in early winter that would crack at the slightest touch.
“That truly is a pity,” came Xiao Qingyan’s inner thought, filled with disappointment.
Lin Sui did not show any outward reaction. He quietly moved back toward the bed, one small step at a time.
“Junior Brother? Why are you up? And why are you so close to Xiao Qingyan!”
Mo Bai flew in through the window carrying a bundle of spiritual herbs, some of which fell along the way. He did not bother to pick them up. Although he usually could not bear to see a single leaf wasted, his Junior Brother was his priority now. He placed the herbs on the table, walked over to Lin Sui in three quick steps, and picked him up by the waist. He placed Lin Sui on the bed, checking him from top to bottom and left to right. Once he confirmed Lin Sui was unharmed, he pressed him back down, tucked him in, and covered him with a blanket. The entire sequence was fluid and practiced.
It took Lin Sui a moment to recover from being handled so abruptly. “Senior Brother, I am not a child anymore,” he said helplessly.
Mo Bai’s physique was not thin like other medical cultivators. Instead, he had broad shoulders and a narrow waist. If he did not identify as a medical cultivator, others would assume he was a saber cultivator. His sturdy arms and chest muscles were prominent even under several layers of clothing. The only difference was that his skin was unnaturally pale. Standing by the bed, he blocked out most of the light.
Mo Bai turned to retrieve the fallen herbs and spoke with doting affection, “In the eyes of your Senior Brother, you will always be a child.”
Lin Sui felt somewhat overwhelmed by this favor. Although his true soul was indeed not yet an adult, the owner of this body was a three-hundred-year-old man! Could it be that Mo Bai was hundreds of years older than him?
Mo Bai seemed to read his thoughts. He held up two fingers. “I am only two years older than you! Two years! Not two hundred years as you imagine! How many times must I tell you before you remember it!”
Age had always been a sensitive subject for Mo Bai. As a child, he looked so fierce and mature that he chose to become a medical healer, yet he still could not change the fact that people thought he was much older than he actually was.
Startled by the shouting, Lin Sui pulled the blanket over his head. Mo Bai would not have it. He pulled the blanket back and leaned close to Lin Sui’s face. His high nose was only a fraction of a millimeter away from Lin Sui’s lips, and the surrounding air was replaced by a light scent of medicine. Mo Bai’s rugged face seemed infinitely large. Lin Sui could only see Mo Bai’s coarse, upward-sweeping eyebrows and his forehead furrowed into the shape of the character for river.
Lin Sui’s small face was tense, and his hands were stiff under the covers. He truly disliked such physical intimacy. “Senior Brother, perhaps you should… trim your eyebrows?” Lin Sui suggested tentatively.
“Junior Brother, why do you have such a problem with my eyebrows?” Mo Bai murmured, touching them. “I think they look quite good.”
“Let us not discuss this further. You should stay away from your disciple. You saved him from the Sect Leader, but not only is he ungrateful, he also claimed that sooner or later, he will grind your bones to dust and scatter your ashes.”
Lin Sui thought, “Thank you. I actually think being turned to ash is better than having my heart gouged out and being forced to eat it while alive. At least scattering ashes happens after I am dead.”
He comforted himself with the thought that if he had to choose, he would prefer the ashes.
The System suddenly came online to add, [He means the kind of ash that is scattered so thoroughly you cannot even be picked up again.]
Lin Sui’s expression darkened. He ignored the System and began to tell a lie against his conscience, putting on a face that suggested his disciple was the best and most obedient boy.
“Senior Brother, Yan’er would never say such things. I understand him. Perhaps I have been too strict with him lately.”
Mo Bai knew his Junior Brother viewed this boy through a thick filter, but he did not expect it to be this extreme. To someone who wanted to kill him, Lin Sui could still maintain that the boy was good, obedient, and simply young and ignorant.
Sure enough, a second later, Lin Sui added, “Besides, Senior Brother, Yan’er is still just a child.”
Lin Sui felt disgusted with his own acting. He had never imagined he could be so affected.
“Hmph. He really knows how to put on an act!”
Lin Sui noted the villain’s “recognition” of his acting skills. He always felt his acting was good enough for the entertainment industry, so he wondered why instructors always said he was not good enough during auditions. He was clearly very capable!
“How can such clumsy acting be convincing?” Xiao Qingyan frowned with loathing and turned his head away, unwilling to look at the hypocritical person any longer.
The System’s cold voice rang out, [Please, Host, prevent the villain from going to the outer sect, otherwise punishment will be administered.]
Lin Sui’s heart skipped a beat. Remembering the misery of being electrocuted into a coma, he immediately spoke up. “Senior Brother, can I have Yan’er stay with me during my secluded meditation?”
Mo Bai looked at his Junior Brother as if he were beyond saving. Even with a Heart Protection Charm guarding his life, one should not gamble with fate like this. “No!” he refused with a dark expression.
Lin Sui’s face fell. He lowered his head and held the blanket with a crying tone in his voice. “No, I will die if I am separated from Yan’er.”
“Junior Brother, the Sect Leader’s word is final.” Mo Bai stood up and looked at the sulking Lin Sui with his arms crossed, completely disagreeing with his statement. Keeping Xiao Qingyan by his side would only lead to a faster death!
Lin Sui truly did not want to be electrocuted again, as the pain was simply too much. “Senior Brother, think of something! Do you not know how to make a body double? Make one of Yan’er and leave it in the outer sect. The Sect Leader will not go there every day to check on him. He is too busy with the affairs of the inner sect!”
Lin Sui reached out from under the blanket and tugged on Mo Bai’s green sleeve, his eyes sparkling with anticipation.
“Junior Brother, since that is an option, why do I not just make a double of Yan’er to stay with you instead?”
Lin Sui found himself unable to refute the logic.
“Hypocrite!” Xiao Qingyan thought. Even with only half a life left, Lin Sui did not forget to find ways to torture him.
The youth’s face held a ferocity that did not belong to his age. His black eyes were filled with rolling hatred and, if one looked closely, a hidden trace of fear. However, if he entered secluded meditation with his master, his chances of killing him would be much higher. He could not pass up such a perfect opportunity.
“Martial Uncle, this disciple, this disciple is willing to enter secluded meditation with Master.” Xiao Qingyan knocked his forehead against the floor with a loud thud.
