- Chapter 35 - The System Is Making Trouble Again
Lin Sui covered his mouth and shook his head.
Was the grand antagonist out of his mind? Why was he using spiritual energy to heal a wound like this? Healing a bruised knee was one thing, but for a tiny bit of broken skin on the tip of a tongue, the antagonist was still extravagantly wasting precious spiritual energy. Did he truly consider himself a medical cultivator?
“Be good, Junior Brother. Listen to me and open your mouth. Senior Brother will give you candy in a moment.”
Lin Sui’s eyes lit up. At any rate, it was not his own spiritual energy being wasted. He paused for a brief moment before saying, “Senior Brother Xiao, I want to eat noodles.”
“Alright. We will take you to get some as soon as we find Senior Brother Feng.”
Once Xiao Qingyan finished speaking, he grasped Lin Sui’s hand tightly. “Let us go. We should head back to the inn first. Junior Brother Zhu has likely been waiting for us for a very long time.”
Lin Sui stopped dead in his tracks, and panic began to crawl into his eyes. Just moments ago, his only thought had been to send Zhu Jiayu away safely. He had completely forgotten that a teleportation talisman would instantly deliver the holder to the exact person they were visualizing in their mind. Could his attempt to send Zhu Jiayu away have actually sent him straight into the jaws of death?
Although the plot had already shifted because of his influence, Feng Feibai had definitely not returned to the sect yet at this point in time. Instead, he was supposed to be meeting with another minor antagonist to plot misdeeds. By doing this, had he not effectively sent the antagonist’s White Moonlight straight to his doom?
“Senior Brother, I fear that Senior Brother Zhu was accidentally teleported straight to Senior Brother Feng’s location by my talisman. Let us not return to the inn. We must go search for Senior Brother Zhu immediately. What if Senior Brother Zhu runs into mortal danger? It will all be over!”
Zhu Jiayu absolutely could not die. If he died, the antagonist would hate Lin Sui for the rest of his life.
Thinking of this, Lin Sui immediately pulled out a fresh teleportation talisman, intending to rush to Zhu Jiayu’s side. However, Xiao Qingyan swiftly snatched it out of his hand.
Xiao Qingyan’s face darkened, and his tone became stiff and unyielding. “Junior Brother, you do not even know who the enemy is or how many of them there are. If you teleport directly over there like this, are you not just throwing your life away?”
“But Senior Brother Zhu was also sent straight over there by me! Furthermore, he is still completely unconscious!”
When Xiao Qingyan saw the expression on Lin Sui’s face, looking as though he were on the verge of tears out of sheer anxiety for Zhu Jiayu, his heart ached unbearably. Was the person his junior brother truly cared about Zhu Jiayu? If that was the case, why had Lin Sui stepped forward to shield him from a sword so many times?
The hand hanging at Xiao Qingyan’s side clenched into a tight fist, his fingernails digging so deeply into his palms that he could no longer feel the physical pain. He forcefully suppressed the burning jealousy in his chest and said, “Junior Brother, Senior Brother Zhu and the others are definitely fine for now. If they encounter a life-threatening danger, our disciple tokens will grow hot.”
As if validating Xiao Qingyan’s words, the disciple token hanging at Lin Sui’s waist suddenly began to vibrate violently and radiate a scorching heat.
Lin Sui reached for the disciple token, his voice trembling as he spoke with a sob, “Senior Brother Xiao, the disciple token, is it glowing? It is so incredibly hot.”
Damn it. Was the antagonist’s White Moonlight truly unable to escape his predetermined, tragic fate? Would that wretched system force him to act as a human shield for the White Moonlight again? It was one thing to take injuries for the antagonist, but now he had to do it for the White Moonlight as well. Did the system view him as nothing more than a walking blood bag?
“Junior Brother, Senior Brother Feng’s cultivation level is far above ours. If even he cannot handle the situation, our going there would merely be a suicide mission. Since you possess teleportation talismans, we should head back to the sect first to summon reinforcements.”
Lin Sui shook his head. “There is no time. I do not have that many teleportation talismans left. A single teleportation talisman can only carry two people at most, so we would never make it back in time.”
Besides, Feng Feibai was not a good person at all! He could essentially be described as a major piece of future cannon fodder. He was the type of person who would ruthlessly slaughter his own fellow disciples just for the sake of accumulating points. If Zhu Jiayu happened to stumble right into him, would Feng Feibai not run a sword straight through Zhu Jiayu’s heart?
The disciple token in his palm grew increasingly hot. Lin Sui clutched Xiao Qingyan’s sleeve tightly and said with stubborn determination, “I must go save Senior Brother Zhu! Senior Brother Xiao, you said yourself that a burning disciple token means someone is in mortal danger. I have a teleportation talisman, which gives us at least a fifty percent chance of rescuing Senior Brother Zhu. I cannot simply stand by and watch him die.”
Xiao Qingyan also realized the absolute gravity of the situation. The disciple token at his own waist was now so hot that it felt as though it might crack apart. Once a disciple token shattered completely, it meant that at least one person among their group had definitively died.
He raised his hand and ignited the teleportation talisman in his grasp. The moment they arrived, the scene that met their eyes was a water dungeon, where two bloody figures, one dressed in dark robes and the other in light robes, hung suspended from above. It was glaringly obvious that Zhu Jiayu’s arrival had been poorly timed, and he had been caught red-handed.
Lin Sui made a move to step forward, but Xiao Qingyan grabbed his hand firmly and concealed their physical forms from view.
“Junior Brother, do not act rashly! Since they have captured Senior Brother Zhu, they will certainly anticipate that we might use the exact same method to attempt a rescue.”
Suddenly, the system’s voice echoed in Lin Sui’s mind. “Please expose yourself and the antagonist to the enemy, Host.”
“But Senior Brother Zhu!” Lin Sui accidentally blurted out loud, and his mouth was instantly covered by the antagonist’s hand.
A wave of realization washed over Lin Sui’s eyes. He hurriedly sent a telepathic transmission to Xiao Qingyan, saying, “Senior Brother, I am so sorry. I was simply too worried about Senior Brother Zhu.”
“It is fine. Let us leave first!”
“Since you have already arrived, why bother leaving? It is much better for all you fellow disciples to gather together here!”
The voice belonged to He Changsheng. He strode into the water dungeon, a thick swirl of ghostly energy gathering in his palm before he launched it directly toward the exact spot where Lin Sui and Xiao Qingyan were hiding.
Xiao Qingyan pulled Lin Sui out of harm’s way and drew his sword to deflect the ghostly energy, but the action completely exposed their positions.
“My, my! I truly did not expect that we would meet again so soon. I originally intended to let you both go, but since the two of you rushed all this way just to seek death, there is nothing I can do. You will simply have to die!”
He Changsheng felt a surge of delight in his heart. He had originally planned to wait until his wounds were fully healed before seeking out this master and disciple duo to exact his revenge. He could not comprehend what a hypocritical person like Lin Sui was thinking, choosing to masquerade as a mere outer sect disciple. Furthermore, it appeared that the disciple, who clearly detested Lin Sui’s true identity, was fiercely protective of the shell Lin Sui was currently inhabiting.
He began to grow deeply curious about how Xiao Qingyan would react if he discovered that the master he so desperately wished dead was actually the very junior brother he currently cherished and protected so deeply. Would they slaughter each other? The thought made him laugh out loud.
“In your dreams!” Xiao Qingyan yelled, swinging his sword forward, but He Busheng casually deflected the strike with ease.
“You should take a good look at whose territory you are standing on. Your fellow disciples are still entirely in my hands! If you do not want them to die right now, you had best surrender quietly!”
With a subtle flick of He Busheng’s fingers, the iron chains suspending the two captives tightened significantly, and a surge of ghostly energy began to weave agonizingly through their bodies.
“Aaaaaah!”
Zhu Jiayu woke up from the sheer intensity of the pain. He shrieked in absolute agony, his hands twisting frantically in a desperate bid to break free from the iron chains, leaving his wrists entirely bloodied and mangled.
Hearing Zhu Jiayu’s agonizing screams, Lin Sui knew without a doubt that Zhu Jiayu was severely injured. He was terrified that the antagonist would eventually lay the blame for this entire disaster squarely on his shoulders, so he bellowed at He Busheng.
“He Busheng! What on earth do you want?!”
He Busheng burst into a cruel chuckle and countered, “Oh dear. Are you not the one who knows best what I want? Naturally, I intend to extract their souls so they can serve as my ghost servants!”
“In truth, I really ought to thank your senior brother’s master first. If it had not been for him, I would never have been able to accomplish this task!”
As he reached the end of his sentence, he did not miss the opportunity to drag Lin Sui into the mud. His narrow, upturned eyes gleamed with a mocking smile as he stared directly at Lin Sui, who was currently gripping Xiao Qingyan’s arm with a death grip. He continued, “I wonder when Immortal Venerable Lin will finally grace us with his presence to pluck out his disciple’s demon core.”
Lin Sui’s eyes blazed with a fury so intense that he wished he could shoot daggers from his gaze to pierce He Busheng to death. However, because the lives of both Zhu Jiayu and Feng Feibai were held firmly in the enemy’s grasp, he was left with nothing but futile anger.
He blamed it entirely on the system for forcing him to expose both the antagonist and himself. Otherwise, he and the antagonist could have easily slipped in undetected and carried the two captives away without anyone being the wiser.
From the chains above, Feng Feibai weakly opened his eyes. “Junior Brother Xiao, Junior Brother Lin, why did you come here? Run away quickly!”
