- Chapter 37 - The Ethereal Specter (10) Viral Heat
After posting the edited video, Yan Yi ignored it, allowing it to ferment naturally within the digital landscape.
The footage he shared was of his ghost wedding with Lu Yinshen. Fearing they might slight the Ghost Immortal, the villagers had added a chaotic array of rituals they deemed solemn, including hiring a photographer to document the event to prove their sincerity.
The ceremony itself was a bizarre hybrid, neither fully capturing the classical beauty of a traditional Chinese wedding nor replicating the elegant romance of a Western one. However, for the villagers, it represented a significant effort, the collective brainstorm of the village’s elementary school graduates.
The photographer had used a mobile phone rather than a professional camera. The resolution was low, and his technical skill was nonexistent. Combined with his sheer terror, his hands had shaken so violently that the resulting footage was objectively poor.
Paradoxically, this enhanced the eerie, horrifying atmosphere necessary for a ghost wedding. With Yan Yi’s natural good looks as the centerpiece, the video was far from a failure.
The original photographer had deleted the footage out of fear immediately after filming, consigning it to the phone’s trash bin. Since it was still within the thirty-day recovery window, Yan Yi was able to hack into the device, export the data to his own phone, and permanently wipe the source file.
Yan Yi felt the video was interesting enough to capture the curiosity of netizens and generate significant traffic. However, he did not have the time to monitor the view count. Once the upload was confirmed, he slipped his phone back into his pocket.
After paying the neighbor, Auntie Zhang, to look after his mother again, he grabbed an umbrella and led Lu Yinshen out the door.
The self-defense tools he ordered for his sister had arrived at the pickup point. He also needed to buy groceries. Their house was located in an area with complex roads where grocery apps refused to deliver, so it was easier to visit the nearby wet market.
While he was out running errands, the video began to heat up rapidly. It went viral in a remarkably short time, surpassing a million views with likes to match, and the comment section exploded.
[I Am a Bad Person]: “Wait, what is this? A handsome guy! Mwah. Wait, what is this? A handsome guy! Mwah.”
[Soft Cute Bunny]: “Holy crap, OP, if you do not clarify soon, I am going to start shipping them. The boy in the wedding dress x The Air.”
[Ice Cream Wholesale CEO]: “Hiss, this scene, this atmosphere, it is a wedding, right? But why does it feel so bone-chilling? What is actually going on here?”
[Munch Munch]: “The person filming is so unprofessional; the camera is shaking like a sieve. Is this for a movie? If so, emmm, I am already tired of domestic horror, but I have to say, the lead is genuinely handsome. With that face, he could probably carry the box office alone.”
[Truth Emperor]: “But the video does not have a movie tag. It does not look like a real promotion for a new drama.”
[Fool]: “Fine, fine! Another beautiful CP to ship. Secretary, I want his full profile in ten seconds.”
[Flowing Water]: “So who exactly is he kissing? It could not really be the air, right?”
Most netizens did not consider the possibility of a real ghost. They assumed it was a promotion for a low-budget horror film, edited by a struggling production assistant. It was a bit odd, though; if it were a professional promotion, why was the quality so poor and the storytelling nonexistent?
From a technical standpoint, the cinematography was lacking, relying entirely on the lead’s appearance. Yet, many people downloaded and saved the video just for that face. In that sense, the promotion was a massive success.
A handsome youth in a wedding dress, his red veil fluttering in the wind, eyes full of longing as he stood on his tiptoes to kiss empty air. The image was beautiful and atmospheric.
However, a few people saw through the facade.
[Taoist Master Xuanqing]: “This old man has calculated with his fingers; there is a ghost in this video.”
This comment was quickly buried under a mountain of new messages. Few saw it, and even fewer believed it.
As the heat rose and marketing accounts began sharing the video, Yan Yi finished at the market. He picked up a cleaned fish and some side dishes, preparing to head home with Lu Yinshen.
Under the scorching sun, he held a black umbrella in one hand to shield Lu Yinshen. His other hand carried the groceries, the weight defining the lean lines of his muscles and the faint blue veins beneath his skin. Though his frame looked somewhat slender, he was tall and striking, his face undeniably handsome.
Many passersby stopped to stare, their eyes filled with admiration. When did such a handsome boy move in nearby? But why was he using an umbrella under the bright sun when it was not raining? How strange.
Facing these gazes, Yan Yi’s expression remained unchanged, though a hint of weariness touched his eyes. He disliked being the center of attention; it was enough as long as he was the only thing in Lu Yinshen’s eyes.
Lu Yinshen’s lips curved downward. He floated to Yan Yi’s other side and tried to pull his sleeve down. But Yan Yi was wearing a short-sleeved shirt; no matter how much he pulled, he could not hide his powerful, exposed arms.
A corner of Lu Yinshen’s red robes flickered into view, momentarily veiling Yan Yi’s arm. In the distraction, the black umbrella accidentally slipped.
A thump sounded as several grocery bags hit the ground. A tomato rolled into the street and was crushed by a bicycle, leaving a long red streak. The owner did not even notice. The people who had been staring at Yan Yi were now frozen in shock, their faces pale with terror.
Were their eyes playing tricks on them? Why did a layer of vivid, brilliant red skin suddenly grow over his arm? It looked utterly unnatural.
Yan Yi remained calm. He glanced at the sun and made a show of calling his sister, Yan Jue. “Sister, my UV allergy flared up again. Can you bring me some allergy medicine?”
It appeared it was just an allergy.
Sure enough, as he picked up the umbrella, the red skin on his hand gradually receded. The onlookers remained suspicious, but none considered a ghost. While many locals were not strictly scientific, they knew ghosts could not appear in broad daylight.
Yan Yi glanced sideways at Lu Yinshen. Knowing he had caused trouble and made people look at Yan Yi strangely, Lu Yinshen appeared confused, yet he pressed himself even closer to Yan Yi’s side.
Yan Yi checked him for injuries. When Lu Yinshen had suddenly manifested his clothes to cover him, Yan Yi had been caught off guard, letting the umbrella slip and exposing Lu Yinshen to the sun for a moment. Even though he had covered him again quickly, Yan Yi was worried.
Once they reached the stairwell of the old building, shielded from the sun and prying eyes, Yan Yi set the bags and umbrella on the steps. He stood on his tiptoes, carefully checking Lu Yinshen’s hair and skin for any marks.
He squeezed Lu Yinshen’s fingers with concern. “Does it hurt?”
Lu Yinshen shook his head. He had only been exposed for a few seconds. In such a short time, he had not even registered the heat of the sun.
Yan Yi breathed a sigh of relief, his eyes crinkling. “I will wear long sleeves next time I go out. But then I will have to ask you to stay even closer to me.”
Long sleeves would be hot in this weather, but Lu Yinshen’s body was ice-cold; holding him was as comfortable as air conditioning.
Lu Yinshen floated into his arms, wrapping his hands around Yan Yi’s waist. His brows curved with a smile as he pressed his face against Yan Yi’s and nodded.
Yan Yi picked up the bags with one hand and the umbrella with the other. With a ghost wrapped around his front, he walked toward the door.
Yan Jue was not back yet. Auntie Zhang’s loud voice could be heard before they even entered.
“Oh, Old Zhang, you have no idea how lazy my old man is! He comes home and just drops his clothes on the floor. Hmph, and he gets upset if I say anything!”
“Oh, right, does your girl have a boyfriend yet? Let me tell you, your girl is beautiful and has a great figure; plenty of guys must like her. You have to keep a close eye on her. Do not let her marry just anyone. Men are so good at faking it these days, one way before marriage, another after.”
“And your boy, oh, he is such a sensible kid. You will be living a blessed life with him later.”
Zhang Xiu did not care if she understood everything; she made sounds of agreement and nodded occasionally. This only encouraged Auntie Zhang to keep talking.
Yan Yi did not interrupt their conversation. He put the groceries away and entered his room. It was still early; Yan Jue would not be back for a few hours, so there was no need to start dinner yet.
He locked his door tightly to avoid being seen.
As soon as they were in the bedroom, Lu Yinshen could not wait to pin him to the bed. If Yan Yi had not been firm about his boundaries, they might have actually engaged in daytime debauchery.
Lu Yinshen had not used his ghostly energy to erase the hickeys on his body. Those red marks were clearly visible, flashing before Yan Yi’s eyes. They acted like a potent wine rather than oxygen in his lungs.
Yan Yi gripped his wrists, his breath hitching as he gasped near Lu Yinshen’s ear. Lu Yinshen pressed lower, kissing Yan Yi without any technique, clumsily nuzzling his cheek and jaw.
He instinctively began to suck on Yan Yi’s philtrum and lower lip, licking the poor skin until it was bright red. Sensing he might be hurting him, he then clumsily licked the spot with the tip of his tongue.
The wine became even stronger. Yan Yi’s eyes were filled with nothing but the figure before him. His breathing quickened.
The bedframe began to creak and sway.
Auntie Zhang’s non-stop chatter stopped. She let out a confused sound. Where was that noise coming from? If she listened closely, it almost sounded like gasping.
She stood up and looked around in confusion, but she could not see anything through the walls. Curiosity tugged at her, but since she had been asked by Yan Yi to look after his mother, she sat back down, harboring her intense curiosity while continuing to gesture at Zhang Xiu.
Zhang Xiu squinted happily, watching her new friend’s gestures and mouth movements. She could understand a little bit of lip-reading, but since she had never studied it, she understood very little and could not communicate back.
Inside the room, Yan Yi was burning up from Lu Yinshen’s kisses. Finally unable to hold back, he flipped Lu Yinshen over, pinning him down and fiercely entering his mouth. Their tongues tangled in the cool, damp territory.
The air became thick and hot, so heavy it seemed to pull a mist of moisture into the corners of Lu Yinshen’s eyes, sparkling like a spring pond.
Yan Yi thought to himself that some supplies needed to be bought soon. He also needed to quickly buy a house with better soundproofing.
