- Chapter 52 - Who Said So? The Experts Said So
At this moment, in Lin Zhizhi’s eyes, Cheng Siyu seemed to be draped in a layer of holy light.
Cheng Siyu said nothing more and turned her gaze back to the scenery outside the window. Just then, her phone buzzed with a message from Zhao Xixi.
Currently, Cheng Siyu had many engagements, and Zhao Xixi had other matters to attend to, so she only had Lin Zhizhi, Li Yexing, and a driver by her side. At this very moment, Li Yexing was dozing off in the passenger seat.
Opening WeChat, the content sent by Zhao Xixi read: “Siyu, the Xi Corporation has offered you a leading role in a TV drama. The script is here; you can choose a character.”
Attached was a script. Cheng Siyu was somewhat surprised because, although her current popularity was high, she was far from having the status to choose her own roles.
Despite her doubts, she clicked on the file.
The script was for a crime investigation series titled The Tower of Mystery, which followed the story of a diverse four-person team at a police station solving cases. The female lead, Chen Yiyun, was a calm and methodical criminal investigator. The male lead, Ye Weisheng, was an armed police officer transferred there due to an injury; he was steady and a man of few words.
The second female lead, Xue Ao, was an outspoken and playful intern police officer, while the second male lead, Ye Xiao, was a more introverted type.
Cheng Siyu stared at the script for a long time, feeling that the lead roles didn’t quite suit her.
However, a character in one of the cases caught her eye. It was a high-profile supporting role named Wen Shu. Her main story arc involved her being a teacher who was frequently harassed because of her beauty—starting with the principal, then colleagues, and finally a student. That student even drugged her water with an aphrodisiac to defile her.
Knowing that because of the student’s young age, even with gathered evidence, the sentence wouldn’t be long—he might be released shortly after entering—she thought it through. Ultimately, she chose a cruel and decisive method to kill and dismember the student.
After her crime was exposed, she did not argue but surrendered obediently. During the police interrogation, she admitted to all her crimes and then asked in return:
“I know everything I did was wrong, but what measures could I have taken to protect myself?”
Seeing this line, Cheng Siyu froze and finally decided on this role.
When she saw the list of invited candidates, her brow furrowed. The first choice for the female lead, Chen Yiyun, was Qin Xiangqing.
She wasn’t sure if this should be considered a good thing or a bad thing.
In the afternoon, after Cheng Siyu finished filming an advertisement, Xi You specifically drove a low-profile ink-colored car to the filming site to pick her up.
After a brief explanation to Lin Zhizhi and Li Yexing, she opened the door and got into the car.
“Are you still in a cold war with your little girlfriend?”
Just as Cheng Siyu buckled her seatbelt, she turned her head and met Xi You’s eyes.
“Yes,” she responded softly.
“Ah, to be young,” Xi You sighed.
“Hmm?” Cheng Siyu didn’t quite catch the meaning behind her words.
“If it were me, and I encountered someone as good as you, I would definitely hold on tight, fearing you’d belong to someone else the next second. How could I throw tantrums all the time?”
Xi You looked at Cheng Siyu, her voice flowing steadily, like a radio broadcaster with a unique magnetic quality.
Hearing her words, Cheng Siyu gave a faint smile. All worry stems from the fear of loss, yet Ji Yun had never worried about losing her.
“So now that I’m in your car, where are we going?”
“You’ll know when we get there.”
The car started slowly. Cheng Siyu stopped talking and gazed at the street scenery for a while before suddenly remembering something. She spoke up:
“That resource… thank you.”
Cheng Siyu originally wanted to say there was no need to give her such a good opportunity, but she felt that might sound like she was being ungrateful while benefiting, so she used the simplest words to express her gratitude.
“No need.” Hearing her, Xi You, who was driving, paused for a moment, the corners of her mouth turning up slightly. “The filming location is at the Xi Corporation’s film studio. It’s because I wanted to see you.”
Cheng Siyu hesitated for a few seconds and said nothing more, her feet under the seat swinging gently.
“If you must repay me, then recover well from your injuries. I’m still looking forward to our second time.”
After she said that, the atmosphere in the car suddenly became ambiguous.
A moment later, Cheng Siyu’s phone rang, breaking the solidified atmosphere.
“Hello?”
“Siyu, Siyu! We can film together again!”
As soon as the call connected, Shen Moxu’s surprised and happy voice came through.
“What?”
“I mean, did you just receive a crime drama?”
“Yes.”
“It’s like a pie falling from the sky! When I accompanied my goddess to the set for her audition, the screenwriter said I looked familiar and asked me to try out a scene. Then I was selected! And then I saw your name on the list!”
Shen Moxu’s jubilant voice came from the other end. Cheng Siyu could almost see her face crinkling with laughter through the screen. She smiled in cooperation and then spoke with feigned sorrow:
“Then I’ll have to watch you two show off your affection every day.”
“How mean! Isn’t the point that we can meet again? As for showing affection, I’ll try to be moderate. After all, my goddess is still maintaining a single persona.”
“Yeah, it’s been a while since I saw you.” Cheng Siyu recalled; she couldn’t remember the last time she had met Shen Moxu.
“Right! Our relationship needs some maintenance too! Cheng Xiaoyu!”
“I know, Shen Dahe.” Cheng Siyu was infected by her laughter, and her tone became lighthearted.
The two chatted about various random things before reluctantly hanging up.
It was then that Cheng Siyu realized the car had stopped in a private garage, and Xi You was leaning against the steering wheel, watching her.
“You look really beautiful when you smile. Why don’t you like to smile?”
Seeing her put down the phone, Xi You spoke, then leaned over to unbuckle Cheng Siyu’s seatbelt.
“Where is… this?” Cheng Siyu looked out the window, and as she turned back, her lips accidentally brushed against Xi You’s cheek.
“My house.”
Xi You took the opportunity to move her face even closer. “I don’t mind if you kiss me directly.”
Cheng Siyu simply turned her head away. It wasn’t until Xi You sat back that she turned back.
“Wasn’t it a date?”
She completely ignored Xi You’s previous comment and asked instead.
“Can’t we have a date at my house?” Xi You frowned slightly, then opened the car door and got out.
Cheng Siyu reacted a beat late. Just as she was about to open her door, Xi You was a step ahead and opened it for her.
After following Xi You inside for a while, Cheng Siyu realized this was a villa district in the suburbs, and Xi You’s home was one of the high-end villas.
As soon as Xi You opened the door, two meows came from inside the room. Then, a cream-colored short-legged cat ran over with heavy steps and rubbed against her shoes.
“This is Caloi, a little ‘eunuch’ who just turned one.”
Seeing this, Cheng Siyu couldn’t help but squat down to pet its fluffy body.
In her previous life, because Ji Yun was a germaphobe and had no interest in any animals, Cheng Siyu never dared to suggest raising a pet. It wasn’t until the little Golden Retriever sent by Ji Yan appeared that a spark of color was added to her dull and tasteless life.
However, the parting was also exceptionally heartbreaking.
“Let’s go in first.” Xi You casually scooped up the chubby cat from the floor, letting its four short legs kick discontentedly in her arms.
“Okay.”
Once they both sat on the sofa, Xi You said, “I saw you were very restrained outside. I thought you might be more relaxed at my house.”
“Th-thank you.”
Indeed, Cheng Siyu tended to feel lost in unfamiliar environments, wanting to find a place to bury herself. She just hadn’t expected Xi You to notice these things.
“No need for thanks. You play with the cat for a bit; I’m going to make dinner for you.” Xi You stood up and rolled up her sleeves, looking ready to go all out. Cheng Siyu froze.
“Dinner?”
“Last time I saw you really liked the pasta from that restaurant, so I tried to consult the chef.”
As she spoke, Xi You walked into the open-plan kitchen. Cheng Siyu sat there for a long time, feeling it was surreal, yet it was happening.
However, remembering that Xi You had over a dozen former lovers, every one of whom was obsessed with her, she felt this might just be her way of pursuing someone. She shouldn’t get ahead of herself.
It was best to stay within the bounds of a resource-exchange relationship; any bit of heartbeat would be crossing the line.
At that moment, the little fat cat ran to Cheng Siyu’s feet and hugged them. She snapped out of it and reached out to playfully stroke the little fat legs.
Her phone chimed—a message from Shen Moxu.
“What’s going on with you and Little Ji? Did you fight?”
Just as Cheng Siyu was marveling at how well-informed she was, Shen Moxu sent a screenshot of a song Ji Yun had shared on her Moments: “Finally, I Became Someone Else’s Third Party.”
…After three seconds of silence, Cheng Siyu didn’t know what to say. she could only briefly explain the situation: “The bracelet I wore was the same as the director’s. She thought I was cheating with the director, so she ripped the bracelet off my wrist. We are currently in a cold war.”
“I see. Old Cheng, I’m reminded of a book,” Shen Moxu’s message came through again.
“What book?” Cheng Siyu sent back a questioning emoji.
Then Shen Moxu sent a shared link. The title was: Married into Love: The Difficult Life of a Wealthy Daughter-in-law.
This time Cheng Siyu was silent for several seconds before sending back a question mark.
“Just kidding. Do you two have some unresolved conflict? She doesn’t seem like such an irrational person.”
Looking at Shen Moxu’s words, Cheng Siyu’s fingers paused on the screen for a few seconds before she typed:
“People have flaws; she isn’t as good as you imagine.”
In the previous life, Shen Moxu was the type who would sneer and mock if Cheng Siyu even mentioned Ji Yun. In this life, it was probably just because Ji Yun hadn’t started spreading all kinds of scandals yet.
“It’s fine. My goddess and I fight sometimes too, but we make up quickly. You and Little Ji should be the same.”
Would they? Remembering how in her previous life she was always the one groveling to Ji Yun before Ji Yun would “reluctantly” deign to notice her.
Cheng Siyu didn’t reply further. Instead, she picked up the cat and took a “sniff.” The scent on the cat was very similar to Xi You’s perfume—a faint rose and coconut fragrance.
“You look like you’re in a bad mood.”
At the dining table, Xi You lit candles, her gaze burning as she looked at Cheng Siyu, filling half of her tall glass.
“Maybe it’s because I was tired from filming the advertisement.” Cheng Siyu no longer resisted the alcohol and took a small sip.
It still didn’t taste bitter; instead, it had a refreshing white grape aroma, as sweet as fruit juice.
“Drinking something sweet helps relieve fatigue.”
“Who said so?”
“The experts said so.”
The candlelight reflected in Xi You’s eyes like a cluster of dancing shadows of fire.
Cheng Siyu looked into her eyes. Perhaps with the boost from the alcohol, she spoke:
“I really envy your future partner.”
