After Rebirth, I Became My Ex's "White Moonlight" - Chapter 50
“What?” Cheng Siyu turned her head, meeting Ji Yun’s gaze.
“Am I not welcome? Qi Yan invited me.”
Having said this, Ji Yun had already climbed onto the bed.
“No, it’s just—never mind.” Cheng Siyu decided to stop thinking about it. She simply felt that with Ji Yun going as well, the already-troublemaking production team would be even more desperate to find gimmicks.
“Go to sleep. You used to coax me to sleep; now it’s my turn to coax you.” Ji Yun cautiously drew closer to Cheng Siyu, softly singing a lullaby by her ear.
Her singing voice was very beautiful—so beautiful that she eventually fell asleep. Cheng Siyu, however, remained staring at the ceiling lamp late into the night, unable to sleep, listening to the steady sound of Ji Yun’s breathing.
At this moment, she suddenly found herself unable to understand Ji Yun, and equally unable to understand herself.
Since when had the two of them grown accustomed to this way of interacting? Even she herself hadn’t noticed the shift.
The next morning, Cheng Siyu was awakened by her phone alarm. When she groggily sat up from the bed, she realized Ji Yun was already dressed.
“Morning. See you on the show later.”
With that, Ji Yun lifted a lock of Cheng Siyu’s hair and gently placed a kiss on her forehead.
“Okay.” At this moment, Cheng Siyu was still in her “standby mode” before fully waking up. Her usually clever and cold eyes held a trace of dullness. Ji Yun took the opportunity to take out her phone and snap a photo of this rare sight.
It wasn’t until she heard the sound of the door closing as Ji Yun left that she woke up a beat late and began to wash up.
“Morning, Sister Siyu.”
“Morning.” Cheng Siyu sat down in the car and closed the door.
The next second, a warm meat bun was handed to her.
“Eat something to line your stomach first,” Zhao Xixi’s voice came.
“Okay.”
“Be a little careful when you’re recording the show today. Yesterday, Qi Yan trashed the set while filming an advertisement.”
Cheng Siyu took small bites of the bun. Hearing Zhao Xixi’s words, she frowned; in her memory, Qi Yan was never the type of person who couldn’t control her emotions.
She had seen her at the banquet just last night, and she didn’t seem irrational then.
“Why?”
“I’m not entirely sure about the details. Apparently, she had been drinking, and during the advertisement, a minor celebrity intentionally brought up her mother to provoke her, so she lost her temper.”
“I see. But Ji Yun is going today too, and they seem to have a good relationship, so there shouldn’t be any accidents,” Cheng Siyu replied, recalling what Ji Yun had told her yesterday.
“So, when He Wuyou said in the last episode that you were a friend of her godmother, Ji Yun is that legendary godmother?” Li Yexing’s high-pitched voice chimed in.
“So you guys were already together back then!” Lin Zhizhi slapped her thigh in a sudden realization, but immediately let out a cry of pain from the force.
“Something like that,” Cheng Siyu replied, though her mind was pondering what kind of topics the production team would cook up using this episode.
“Have you thought about that script for the variety show ‘Let’s Solve the Case Together’ that I sent you yesterday?”
Cheng Siyu paused. It took her a few minutes to remember the variety show Ji Yun had mentioned yesterday.
“We’ll see. I don’t think I’m very suited for variety shows.”
She was naturally a person of few words; her effect on a variety show was basically just sitting there as eye candy.
“How are you not suited? Since you joined ‘The Little Ones,’ the ratings have already doubled several times,” Li Yexing’s indignant voice came.
Wasn’t that because the production team knows how to stir up drama? Cheng Siyu thought, but she didn’t say it aloud. She only said, “Even if I weren’t there, the show would still have many viewers.”
“Then you definitely deserve a share of the credit. I see many viewers come just to hear you sing.” Li Yexing reached out and patted Cheng Siyu’s shoulder encouragingly. “Besides, even if you do nothing but sit there, you’re still beautiful to look at.”
Cheng Siyu didn’t speak again and continued to eat her bun in silence.
After arriving at the recording site, Cheng Siyu had only been sitting in the dressing room for a short while when she saw Qi Yan walk out of her private dressing room.
After their eyes met for a second or two, Qi Yan walked quickly to her side.
“Have you seen Jiang Shizi? Help me say sorry to her; I was impulsive that day.”
Guilt and despondency flashed in Qi Yan’s eyes; the recent events had dealt her too great a blow. She had thought for all these years that Jiang Shizi was the one who had wronged her, so she frantically pushed all the blame onto her to keep herself free of any burden.
It wasn’t until recently that she discovered she was actually the culprit who had disrupted and shattered Jiang Shizi’s stable world—yet despite this, Jiang Shizi had endured everything without a word.
“She will be very happy to hear that,” Cheng Siyu comforted. Qi Yan, with her head lowered, looked up at Cheng Siyu upon hearing this. Her eyes instantly filled with tears, but her stubbornness prevented them from falling.
“Thank you.”
At this moment, the sound of children laughing came from not far away. Cheng Siyu looked toward the source of the sound; it was Ji Yun walking over, holding He Wuyou’s hand.
Hearing He Wuyou’s voice, Qi Yan hurriedly pulled back her emotions and put on an air of nonchalance.
Once Qi Yan had led He Wuyou away, Ji Yun sat down in the seat next to Cheng Siyu.
“I’m about to stop seeing her; I really can’t bear it, watching her grow up from a tiny bean.”
Ji Yun gazed at the receding backs of the two, suddenly sighing with emotion.
“Why?” Cheng Siyu didn’t understand the meaning behind her words. What did she mean… about to stop seeing her?
“Custody was awarded to her father. Once Qi Yan finishes recording this show, she has to send the child back.”
“Hmm…” Cheng Siyu frowned, not knowing what to say. According to the laws of this country, custody is usually prioritized for the mother. Could it be that Qi Yan didn’t want her?
“Wuyou wasn’t born to Qi Yan,” Ji Yun said, answering Cheng Siyu’s confusion.
“What?”
“Wuyou was fathered by He Jinnian with another woman he was fooling around with. That woman brought the child to demand money, so Qi Yan made an agreement with her, gave her the money, and brought Wuyou home to raise herself.”
It took Cheng Siyu a moment to process this.
“Even my aunt doesn’t know about this, because Qi Yan went abroad for advanced studies for a year to cover it up, telling the outside world that she gave birth during that year.”
“Shouldn’t this matter be kept secret?”
Cheng Siyu’s brain resumed functioning. She met Ji Yun’s gaze, feeling it was somewhat inappropriate for her to blurt this out so casually.
“Keep it secret from outsiders, which you are not,” Ji Yun replied.
True, Cheng Siyu thought. It wasn’t a big deal if she knew. If she were to spread it, it would only be dismissed as a rumor created to smear a rival. Cheng Siyu wouldn’t do something that brought a hundred harms and not a single benefit to herself.
So she simply said softly, “Mhm.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t become like Jiang Shizi,” Ji Yun said with deep feeling. Looking at Cheng Siyu’s pensive profile, she spoke with absolute certainty.
Cheng Siyu met her gaze, recalling a sentence Jiang Shizi had once said: “Back then, we were all too young and feared nothing.” She herself had been too young back then, believing whatever Ji Yun said.
Although internally she let Ji Yun’s promises go in one ear and out the other, she still replied in a firm tone:
“Mhm, I believe you.” Cheng Siyu then turned her head, looking toward Qi Yan’s dressing room. “Wuyou doesn’t know she’s being sent back yet, does she?”
Since the divorce from Qi Yan, He Jinnian’s tabloid news had never ceased. Furthermore, the He family parents had two other sons who had married socialites from various circles and had “true” grandsons and granddaughters. Life probably wouldn’t be very easy for He Wuyou after she went back.
Having experienced a somewhat similar situation, Cheng Siyu sighed. However, the He family was wealthy; she would likely live much better than Cheng Siyu had.
“Mhm, I don’t know if I’ll be able to see her in the future,” Ji Yun’s voice came.
Once the recording began, since it was the final episode, the production team arranged for all the children to be on-site.
Compared to the last time Cheng Siyu had seen her at the filming location, Li Enyu seemed to have grown taller and more mature, but a child is a child after all, and she was having the time of her life playing with the other kids.
As clear, pleasant laughter rang out continuously, the content of the program began to get on track.
Cheng Siyu’s seat was arranged to the left of Qi Yan. The production team perhaps wanted to use this to attract one last wave of traffic, but the two of them had long since moved past any grudges, and their interaction was quite harmonious.
After the show started, He Wuyou ran over and sat next to Ji Yun, calling her “Godmother” over and over in a sweet voice.
Hearing this, the host finally had a realization and said, “So, the godmother Wuyou called out to when Siyu first joined the show was actually Ji Yun.”
“Yes, haha,” Cheng Siyu gave an awkward but polite smile.
“I’ve heard the song you two sang together; I wonder if I might be fortunate enough to hear a live version?” The one speaking was another host.
“Of course,” Ji Yun answered a step ahead of Cheng Siyu.
The next moment, the large screen began playing a video. Today’s content was about families traveling together and taking family photos.
This was a scene that had never existed in Cheng Siyu’s memory. Looking at the smiling faces of the children on the screen, a hint of envy flickered in her eyes.
The follow-up question was: Does a child bring you more happiness, sadness, or some other emotion?
This question was primarily intended for the permanent guests who had children; Cheng Siyu and Ji Yun were perfectly hidden from this topic.
However, after asking the guests, the host threw another question to the unmarried and childless guests: “Do you hope your children grow up to be people just like yourselves?”
Hearing this question, Cheng Siyu pondered for a few seconds but reached no conclusion.
Was she a qualified daughter? Probably not—otherwise, how could she have let her mother lose hope and commit suicide, leaving her behind? This was the one-point Cheng Siyu was most unwilling to mention.
Fortunately, this question wasn’t directed at Cheng Siyu, but at Ji Yun.
“I suppose so, though I still hope they can be a bit more impressive than me.” After saying this, Ji Yun looked toward the screen—or perhaps toward Cheng Siyu—and added, “Of course, it’s still too early for that. It won’t be too late to decide later.”
After recording the first half, during the intermission, the usually quirky and clever He Wuyou unexpectedly sat in a chair and began to cry.
“Mom… does Mama not want me anymore?”
Faced with this sudden scene, Ji Yun could only comfort her softly while ordering the staff on-site to go find Qi Yan.
“I… I know. Mama is going to give me to Papa. She doesn’t want Wuyou anymore.”
