After My Flash Marriage with the Sick Beauty, I Reached the Pinnacle of My Life - Chapter 7
Xia Shishi slept for a long time.
Clutching Wen Jiao’s skirt, all the exhaustion from her rebirth finally eased at this moment, allowing her to sleep soundly and peacefully.
Wen Jiao’s leg was pressed down by Xia Shishi’s head. Her leg wouldn’t go numb, but she worried the little girl might catch a chill.
She desperately wanted to move Xia Shishi to the bed, but she couldn’t do it.
Wen Jiao’s hand, which had been gently stroking Xia Shishi’s hair, paused. She instead gripped the armrest of her wheelchair tightly, looking distressed, trying to vent all the emotions deep within her heart.
The atmosphere was heavy and cold. Wen Jiao gazed at the little girl she yearned to protect, only to find herself utterly helpless.
Let alone picking Xia Shishi up, even helping her sit up was a struggle.
She was essentially useless; things ordinary people could accomplish, she could not. If she couldn’t even manage this small task, what could she possibly offer Xia Shishi?
Wen Jiao turned her head toward the window, trying to hide the bitterness in the corner of her eye. It was only natural that Xia Shishi didn’t want to marry her, yet the more Xia Shishi objected, the more a greedy desire made her want to hold onto the girl. She worried that once the little girl left, she would never see her again.
Shouldn’t she be satisfied now? Wen Jiao leaned her head back and covered her eyes with her hand.
Xia Shishi’s behavior today had genuinely surprised her. First, she wore the custom-made little dress she’d had made to the engagement banquet, speaking well of her in front of everyone. Then, only a short time after they parted, she rushed over to find her.
Xia Shishi must have some feelings for her, even if it wasn’t much—even just a tiny bit. A tiny bit should be enough, Wen Jiao thought, a faint self-mockery coloring her lips as she told herself not to be greedy anymore.
The door to the room was knocked. It was Xia Shishi’s parents.
The couple’s faces were filled with constraint, especially when they saw Xia Shishi using Wen Jiao’s lap as a pillow. Mrs. Xia’s expression changed, and she cautiously asked, “Shishi… she didn’t upset you, did she?”
“No,” Wen Jiao looked at her, her voice gentle, “Shishi is very obedient.”
“…” Mrs. Xia was speechless.
Even with a parent’s bias, Mrs. Xia didn’t feel her daughter was particularly obedient.
Mrs. Xia looked a little worried and hesitantly said, “About the engagement… maybe we should…”
Wen Jiao said, “Let’s call it off.”
Although neither of them knew why Xia Shishi had changed so dramatically, they still remembered her reaction from before yesterday. Xia Shishi had said she would die before marrying Wen Jiao.
Wen Jiao stroked Xia Shishi’s hair one last time and sighed. She had to leave her own engagement banquet due to her physical condition; she might truly not be able to give Xia Shishi what she wanted. If that was the case, it was better to give Xia Shishi her freedom.
Mrs. Xia also sighed in relief: “I was just worried the child wouldn’t express herself properly. Jiao Jiao, the Xia family owes you an apology for this matter.” The marriage had been arranged by her and her husband too presumptuously, which was why the relationship between the two families had become so strained. This was now a relatively respectable end.
“Mhm.” Wen Jiao reluctantly withdrew her hand, watching as Mr. Xia picked up his daughter and left the room.
She sat in her wheelchair as the twilight filtered in from the window. The person in her heart was moving further and further away, and she remained rooted to the spot, lacking even the courage to chase after her.
Xia Shishi woke up just as the car pulled up to the front of their house.
She stared blankly at the Xia family villa for a moment, then frantically asked Mrs. Xia beside her, “Where is Jiao Jiao?”
Jiao Jiao? Mrs. Xia’s heart skipped a beat. Hearing her daughter use such an intimate term so naturally made her feel completely uneasy.
“That’s rude, call her ‘Jie Jie’ (Older Sister).”
“Then where is Jie Jie?” Xia Shishi didn’t dwell on the title for too long; calling her darling, wife, Jiao Jiao, or Jie Jie was fine—that person belonged to her anyway.
She remembered falling asleep on Wen Jiao’s lap earlier. How had she returned home in the blink of an eye? Xia Shishi felt an unspeakable panic, a feeling that something unexpected might have happened.
Mrs. Xia got out of the car: “She still had to undergo an examination and needed to rest early tonight, so the engagement banquet ended ahead of schedule.”
Xia Shishi: “…Is that so?” That was good, then.
Wen Jiao had indeed been ill for many years, and it wasn’t the first or second time the Wen family had ended a banquet early for her sake. Only then did Xia Shishi relax.
After sleeping, her energy had greatly improved. Xia Shishi followed Mrs. Xia out of the car, and when she saw Qi Xue standing at the villa entrance to greet her, she remembered another important matter.
She needed to fire Qi Xue. She could no longer keep someone like that by her side.
Xia Shishi stopped, looked at the figure with a blank expression, and said once again, “Mom, I want to fire her.”
Mrs. Xia frowned slightly in disapproval: “Stop being absurd. Qi Xue has been with you, taking care of you for so long, and knows all your little habits. If you fire her, it’ll be hard to find someone else to look after you.”
Xia Shishi took a deep breath: “I have Sister Jiao, though.”
Mrs. Xia: “…”
Mrs. Xia currently didn’t want to bring up the canceled engagement, planning to wait a couple of days until the storm subsided before slowly mentioning it. But hearing Xia Shishi’s crisp voice calling her “Jiao Jiao” and “Jie Jie” caused Mrs. Xia to feel both odd and awkward. What exactly had happened?
Mr. Xia, however, didn’t think it was a big deal: “It’s just a servant; fire her if you want. Just go with whatever Shishi wishes. As for who will take care of her later, we can just spend more money to make sure they learn Shishi’s temperament.”
The Xia family was not short on money; the housekeepers and servants they could hire were top-notch in the industry. Firing a mere Qi Xue was nothing.
As Mr. Xia spoke while walking, his words reached Qi Xue’s ears, and she truly panicked: “Miss, I’ve been with you for so long; you won’t be used to a new person.”
Hearing Mr. Xia’s words, Xia Shishi walked toward the doorway. She stopped in front of Qi Xue and said in a cold voice, “I will get used to it.”
Just like in her previous life, when Qi Xue betrayed her and immediately went to work for Zhou Xiaojiang. Hadn’t Xia Shishi gotten used to that?
Facing the anxious Qi Xue, Xia Shishi restrained herself: “Don’t worry, you’ll be properly compensated with severance pay.” Xia Shishi felt intense disgust, but she had no evidence right now and didn’t want to see Qi Xue for another second. If she could, she wouldn’t even want to pay the salary. But comparing forcing herself to endure the sight of her to solving the problem with a bit of money, Xia Shishi chose the latter.
Normally, she wouldn’t need to consult her parents to fire a single person, but Qi Xue had truly been with her for a long time, practically since she started high school. Just as Mrs. Xia said, Qi Xue knew many of her little habits. That’s why later, she was so terribly tricked by Zhou Xiaojiang.
Looking at Qi Xue, who had already been bribed by Zhou Xiaojiang, a trace of hatred flashed in Xia Shishi’s eyes. Her lips curved slightly: “I will follow the rules, and I hope you know what those rules are. Take your compensation and be a decent person. Just make absolutely sure you never appear in my sight again.”
Qi Xue was so flustered she didn’t know what to do with her hands and feet. Was she really fired? She didn’t even know what she had done wrong. Thinking back carefully, she could only confirm that she had worked as usual today and hadn’t done anything specific to offend Xia Shishi. What would she do if she was really fired? Where would she find such a good job, with a salary of fifty or sixty thousand a month!
No, Xia Shishi was probably just having a momentary tantrum. Qi Xue clenched her fists, preparing to apologize to Xia Shishi tomorrow morning. She was so easy to coax; she would surely be won over easily.
