After My Flash Marriage with the Sick Beauty, I Reached the Pinnacle of My Life - Chapter 14
“Mom, what’s wrong?” Xia Shishi giggled, her voice sweet, as her mother had been silent for quite a while.
“If you don’t want me to go to the company, you can just say it. I won’t get mad at you, Mom. Everyone knows you treat me the best.”
Xia Shishi clung to her mother, whining affectionately. She had already made up her mind.
Even if the family company wouldn’t let her intern, she could still find another company. Even if it wasn’t as good as Wen Jiao’s, her starting point was still better than most people’s.
She would work hard to learn everything she could and do her best so she wouldn’t disappoint Jiao Jiao.
“My daughter.” Xia Mom had spoiled Xia Shishi since she was little, afraid of her getting even slightly hurt.
No matter what Xia Shishi wanted, she would satisfy it. Even when she and her husband strongly wanted Xia Shishi to marry Wen Jiao, when their daughter cried, threw tantrums, and even threatened to go on a hunger strike, Xia Mom regretted their decision.
Xia Mom had even called Wen Jiao about it—asking if they should just cancel the engagement banquet.
She and her husband originally thought Shishi would be happy to hear this news.
But seeing Shi Shi’s reaction now, they were unsure.
Waking up early to ask Xia Mom for Wen Jiao’s phone number, Xia Mom thought Xia Shishi was going to talk to Wen Jiao about breaking off the engagement.
She figured it would be easier for Xia Shishi if Wen Jiao was the one to suggest it.
Yet, when Xia Shishi returned home, she was the same as yesterday, constantly muttering about how great Jiao Jiao was and how much she liked her.
She even bought a bunch of clothes that weren’t her usual style, and Xia Mom only found out when she returned that they were intended for Wen Jiao.
She had thought her daughter had finally matured and was buying her gifts…
“What exactly are your feelings toward Wen Jiao now?”
Xia Mom’s eyes were filled with worry.
At this moment, she actually hoped Xia Shishi would just say she didn’t like her.
“I like her,” Xia Shishi answered immediately. Knowing that Xia Mom still had many questions, she decided to get everything out now. “Just treat everything I said before as nonsense. I was too ignorant back then. Jiao Jiao is such a wonderful partner; I must have cultivated blessings for eight lifetimes to meet her.”
Xia Mom: “You’re not just saying this deliberately to make us angry?”
Xia Shishi looked hurt: “How could I intentionally upset you, Mom…”
Xia Mom: “…You’ve upset me plenty.”
Running around, jumping up and down, and even suspecting that the Xia family company was going bankrupt, which was why they were pushing her to marry—she had nearly driven Xia Mom to illness.
But she loved her precious daughter, so Xia Mom couldn’t bear to stay angry.
She was worried, extremely worried.
Just when she thought she could finally relax, she became even more worried.
“How exactly did you come to this realization?”
Xia Shishi shrank her neck, afraid to speak.
To be honest, she didn’t dare. This world was a novel, and she was the contrasting figure to the heroine’s happy marriage, destined for a miserable ending. If she told her mother that, how heartbroken would Xia Mom be?
But Xia Shishi didn’t want to lie either; her good education forbade her from lying, especially to her family.
“I just suddenly understood.” Xia Shishi lowered her head, the image of her heartbroken parents flashing in her mind, and her eyes welled up again. “And I already know everything Wen Jiao has done for me. Mom, how can I not be moved when someone treats me so well?”
Xia Mom couldn’t help but reach out to wipe the corner of her daughter’s eye: “My little crybaby.”
Xia Shishi: “That’s only because I know Mom will comfort me.”
“Mom, you look like you still have something to say.”
“…Ahem.”
Xia Mom finally believed that her daughter had genuinely changed her mind and fallen for Wen Jiao, but… she said with difficulty, “Wen Jiao has already told us that she wants to call off the engagement.”
It was a bolt from the blue.
Late at night, Xia Shi Shi’s face instantly went pale, completely devoid of color upon hearing this, causing Xia Mom to panic.
Xia Mom hadn’t expected her daughter to like Wen Jiao this much now, reacting so strongly just from hearing those words.
What should she do now?
Xia Mom hurriedly called someone over and then comforted Xia Shi Shi: “It’s okay, it’s okay. I’ll swallow my pride and go talk to the Wen family about the marriage again.”
Xia Shi Shi’s tears fell in huge drops: “Mom, did Wen Jiao suggest it?”
Xia Mom didn’t dare to say anything more, afraid her daughter would cry even harder.
Xia Shishi knew; if it had been Xia Mom’s suggestion, she would have answered right away.
So, Wen Jiao had taken the initiative to cancel the engagement.
To Xia Shishi, those words were like a death sentence.
What was her biggest fear?
That Wen Jiao had also been reborn. She was afraid that Wen Jiao knew everything that had happened, was disappointed in her, and no longer liked her.
Xia Shishi was so scared. On one hand, she felt she deserved it for all the heartbreaking things she had done to Wen Jiao, but on the other hand, she desperately wanted Wen Jiao to be by her side again.
If Wen Jiao had also been reborn, then her suggestion to break off the engagement was completely reasonable.
That’s what Xia Shishi thought.
But without Wen Jiao, what was the meaning of her rebirth? She might as well have been left to rot in hell, where she could at least continue to watch over Wen Jiao as a ghost.
How could she possibly face Wen Jiao now?
Call Wen Jiao her wife.
Imagine their life after marriage.
It was ironic, a tremendous irony!
“Mom, my heart feels like it’s being ripped out.” It didn’t just hurt; she felt cold all over.
The conviction that had been sustaining her instantly vanished.
“How could this happen?” Xia Mom muttered.
She actually preferred the temperamental Xia Shishi, at least then she knew why she was unhappy and how to fix it.
Instead of being so heartbroken that tears poured down uncontrollably, leaving her speechless.
Did she suddenly fall in love to this extent?
Xia Mom was stunned.
“Don’t worry, I’ll call now.” Xia Mom frantically pulled out her phone, wanting to beg Wen Jiao to comfort Xia Shishi.
Xia Shishi looked even more shocked than her mother: “No!”
She couldn’t call. Xia Shi Shi’s pupils were trembling. She looked at Xia Mom, deceiving herself, thinking that even if Wen Jiao was also reborn, she at least hadn’t kicked her out today, right?
Although the engagement was broken, Wen Jiao still couldn’t bear to see her upset, right?
It had to be this way.
But Wen Jiao still proposed breaking off the engagement. What would Wen Jiao say if she called now?
Would it make her even more determined to call off the engagement?
Xia Shishi bit her lip hard. She couldn’t think of a solution and didn’t want to face Wen Jiao in this state.
How unsightly she looked. Wen Jiao would surely dislike her even more if she saw her like this.
Xia Shishi sniffled.
Then she burst into tears again, realizing she still couldn’t convince herself. She could only clutch Xia Mom’s clothes, crying over and over, “It’s all my fault. I wish I had sobered up sooner. Why was I so stupid?”
Xia Mom held Xia Shi Shi’s shoulders: “Shishi isn’t stupid. Didn’t you already realize it?”
“Don’t worry about your mom’s pride. As long as you can be happy, your dad and I will do anything.”
