After My Death, I Became a Heartless Madman - Chapter 31.2
“If you won’t say, I’ll just assume you’re from the Song family.”
Every family had secrets they’d rather keep hidden, and wealthy families in the Inner City had even more. Bai Ruoruo wasn’t in the mood to dig into why Song Shizhou refused to acknowledge her background, she had other things to worry about.
“You say you have nothing to do with my sister? How is that possible? She made so many trips between the Thirteenth District and the Inner City, wasted so much time just to drag you back, how could you have nothing to do with her?”
She’d even risked angering Mr. Bai…
The thought sent a chill down Bai Ruoruo’s spine.
Song Shizhou grasped Bai Ruoruo’s hand.
“Miss Bai, let me be honest with you. I did have a past with your sister, but that’s all it is, the past. Now, she’s keeping me here under unclear circumstances… If word gets out, it won’t reflect well on her.”
Bai Ruoruo agreed wholeheartedly.
Though Bai Ruowei held immense power, that didn’t mean she could just imprison people at will. Mr. Bai hadn’t said anything, but he was already displeased upon finding out… And what’s more?
Song Feng Yu had been harassing her sister these past few days. Though Mia and the others had managed to fend her off, if things escalated.
“I don’t want to make a scene either. Besides, I have nothing to my name, I’m completely unworthy of Miss Bai. Bringing me into Snow Pavilion and letting me stay here is just her indulging a passing whim. She doesn’t actually care for me…”
“If a fleeting fancy ends up interfering with Miss Bai’s greater plans, that would be unfortunate.”
Bai Ruoruo listened in stunned silence, her expression uneasy.
“Why are you telling me all this?”
Song Shizhou smiled faintly.
“No particular reason.”
“Right now, I’m stuck in Ink Residence, no phone, no one to talk to. Every day, all I can do is let my thoughts run wild.”
“Really? My sister won’t even let you speak to others.”
She suddenly felt a pang of pity for Song Shizhou.
“That woman Qingluan must be a handful.”
Song Shizhou poured Bai Ruoruo a cup of tea.
“Since you managed to slip past Qingluan and the others to see me, I believe Miss Bai must have some intentions of her own.”
“Why don’t we cooperate?”
Bai Ruoruo raised an eyebrow.
“Cooperate?”
“What did you have in mind?”
Song Shizhou leaned close to her ear,
“Of course…”
“You help me gain freedom, and I’ll return Miss Bai a peaceful life.”
“I’ve been swamped with Surveillance Institute affairs these past few days, no time to return to Snow Pavilion, let alone visit her at Ink Residence.”
Bai Ruowei sat in the reception hall,
“How has she been these days?”
Qingluan quickly replied,
“Miss Song’s mood has stabilized considerably. She smashed many things on the first day, but hasn’t done so since.”
Qingluan whispered a tally of the damaged items’ costs into her ear, a single small jade ornament alone would consume half a year’s living expenses for an ordinary family. The financial pain made Song Shizhou stop her destruction.
Bai Ruowei smiled faintly after hearing this,
“It’s good that she stopped.”
“Miss Bai, although Miss Song’s temper has improved recently, she still desires freedom of movement. She doesn’t want to be confined to Snow Pavilion, nor to be cut off from outside contact.”
“If you have time, I think you should have a proper talk with her.”
Bai Ruowei glanced at Qingluan,
“Alright, I understand.”
With rare free time today, she had intended to visit Song Shizhou at Ink Residence, but Bai Ruoruo suddenly insisted on giving her a gift, deliberately drawing her away from the residence.
Bai Ruowei suspected nothing.
Beyond being Miss Bai’s private residence, Snow Pavilion also served as an exceptional defensive stronghold. Its winding paths twisted unpredictably, with scenery shifting seasonally every tree’s position, every bamboo grove was impermanent. Even frequent visitors couldn’t memorize the layout, let alone first-timers.
This was precisely why Bai Ruowei disliked returning.
Guarded year-round by Miss Bai’s private security team, every entry and exit underwent rigorous inspection though protocols relaxed considerably when accompanied by high-ranking personnel like Qingluan or Li Ningzhi.
Bai Ruoruo naturally faced no restrictions.
Following Bai Ruoruo to Snow Pavilion’s rear gate, a seldom-used entrance normally kept locked Bai Ruoruo knocked on her sister’s car window after opening her own door.
“Sis, switch to my car.”
Bai Ruowei complied.
“Ruoruo, what exactly are you planning?”
Bai Ruoruo smiled sweetly,
“Nothing much. Just want to give you a gift to make up for upsetting you.”
She continued,
“The back gate’s wall has deteriorated from years of neglect. Amazing the housekeeper never noticed.”
The breach was minor enough to escape notice hardly the housekeeper’s fault in such an enormous estate where perfection was impossible. Especially since without Bai Ruoruo deliberately leading them here, who would ever find this spot? Only someone intimately familiar with Snow Pavilion would know about this vulnerable section of wall.
“I’ve arranged with Sister Shi Zhou, she’ll emerge here in half an hour. My people will be waiting outside to receive her.”
Bai Ruowei chuckled,
“How affectionate you’ve become with her.”
Bai Ruoruo gazed at her sweetly,
“She’s your chosen beloved, of course I should be close and call her sister.”
“Weren’t you always pushing me toward Zhao Yiqing? What happened to your precious Second Miss Zhao?”
“With you having found your person, how could I interfere? Besides, what’s Second Miss Zhao compared to my sister’s happiness?”
Bai Ruoruo moved closer,
“Whoever my sister likes is her blessing. Whoever she needs or wants by her side is none of others’ business. My only duty is to help facilitate her happy marriage, not hinder it.”
She affectionately wrapped her arm around Bai Ruowei’s.
“Sister, if anyone dares gossip about this again, I’ll help you.”
Bai Ruowei stopped her.
“Ruoruo, this isn’t the Third District.”
“I know you mean well, but you’re still young. My affairs don’t require your intervention.”
Bai Ruoruo quietly returned to her seat.
Half an hour passed quickly.
Sounds came from the iron gate as expected, the waist-high grass rustling slightly. Bai Ruoruo’s eyes flickered.
A dog came running out.
With yellow and white patterned fur, large ears flopping by its sides, bouncing with each joyful step.
The cold wind made Xiao Bao shiver, and the ungrateful creature immediately started barking “werwerwer” loudly on the road.
Bai Ruowei massaged her temples helplessly and personally got out of the car to pick Xiao Bao up.
Bai Ruoruo turned deathly pale, staring in disbelief.
“How could this happen? It was supposed to be foolproof.”
“Sis, I didn’t mean to, I never expected such a mistake. Just give me a little more time, I can immediately.”
“Ruoruo.”
Bai Ruowei smiled.
Xiao Bao squirmed uncomfortably in her arms, trampling her several-thousand-dollar scarf into a ragged mess.
“You’re not wrong. You did well.”
“It’s just, why did you think she would be so naive?”
