After My Death, I Became a Heartless Madman - Chapter 2
The dampness on her cheeks grew warmer as Song Shizhou bit her lip.
“…Wife, I’ve brought you dinner.”
Even though she had been repeatedly reminded and subtly pressured by Xiao Bai, calling Bai Ruowei such an intimate term as “wife” in front of so many people still made Song Shizhou unbearably shy.
A few soft chuckles reached her ears. Without even looking, she knew Miss Bai must be wearing a satisfied expression. Xiao Bai was like this relentless in making her display affection in public. And this was already a toned-down version. In the early days of their cohabitation, this person’s possessiveness had reached a terrifyingly childish level.
She demanded to hear “I love you” from Song Shizhou every day once in the morning, once at night and would pester her for phone calls if they were apart for even a few hours. The clinginess was extreme. The slightest refusal would trigger a tantrum.
Her tantrums were also ridiculously juvenile, deliberately skipping meals, refusing to cover herself while sleeping, pulling all sorts of laughably silly stunts. Back then, Song Shizhou had no idea of Bai Ruowei’s true identity, assuming she was just a spoiled Omega raised in luxury. After learning the truth, she couldn’t reconcile this clingy lover with the ruthless White Inspector who killed without blinking.
It was like adopting a cat, thinking it was a sweet, affectionate breed, only to discover it was actually a lion, one that devoured ten people a day.
At least Bai Ruowei hadn’t eaten anyone in front of her yet.
Song Shizhou’s face quickly flushed, and any semblance of composure vanished entirely. Mia watched the two with amusement, wondering if she should shoo everyone else out.
Bai Ruowei remained motionless, still focused on the case files, though the faintest hint of a smile curled at the corner of her lips.
“Mhm.”
She beckoned to Song Shizhou, like calling a puppy.
“Come here.”
Following Bai Ruowei’s silent cue, Mia ushered the rest of the Special Operations Team out.
The spacious meeting room was now empty except for the two of them. The famously icy Miss Bai lowered her gaze, waiting expectantly for Song Shizhou’s next move, her expression carrying a spoiled, haughty edge.
Song Shizhou opened the thermal container.
Inside was a steaming bowl of double-red soup with snow fungus and barley. Carefully, she poured it into a bowl, stirring gently with a spoon. The warmth and fragrance bloomed instantly, the sweet aroma tantalizing enough to whet anyone’s appetite.
Perhaps affected by the rising steam, a faint blush even appeared on Bai Ruowei’s cheeks, making her look unexpectedly adorable.
Song Shizhou pushed the porcelain bowl toward her.
“I simmered it for three whole hours, the grains are practically melted. Eat up.”
Bai Ruowei said nothing, picking up the spoon to take small, delicate sips.
Watching the quiet scene of her drinking the soup, warmth blossomed in Song Shizhou’s chest.
This was her, wife.
She thought it secretly in her heart.
Her past life had been so wretched that she’d resigned herself to a lonely end. Yet against all odds, heaven had granted her such a precious gift Bai Ruowei, the best Bai Ruowei, her sincere beloved, the angel and blessing sent to make up for all she had suffered.
She truly loved Bai Ruowei. At the welcome banquet held in Bai Ruowei’s honor, on that absurd yet beautiful night, she silently watched Bai Ruowei’s sleeping face and swore in her heart, no matter who this person was, as long as she was willing, as long as she agreed, she would take responsibility and love her for a lifetime.
“You’re late today.”
A cold voice interrupted Song Shizhou’s tender reminiscence. She glanced at Bai Ruowei’s expression, then recalled her own affectionate thoughts just moments ago, and found herself momentarily speechless.
The fastidious Miss Bai had never shown much interest in food. Even faced with this bowl of meticulously prepared porridge, she merely took a couple of casual bites.
Dabbing her lips with a handkerchief, her pale lips glistened moistly from the porridge, tempting one to kiss them.
Song Shizhou thought for a moment and decided to tell a small lie first. “It’s a workday today. The lobby was crowded, you know.”
She didn’t want to tell Bai Ruowei the real situation, partly to avoid putting her in an awkward position, partly to conceal her own embarrassment.
She wasn’t the type to rely on her lover for everything, nor had she ever used Bai Ruowei’s status to gain any advantage.
“I dislike being lied to,”
Bai Ruowei cut her off,
“Do you think just because you don’t say it, I won’t know what happened?”
In the high-speed operations of the Inner City, nothing escaped Bai Ruowei’s notice. She had Mia, she had eyes and ears planted everywhere. No matter what Song Shizhou did or whom she encountered, it would all be laid bare before her.
The feeling of losing control was unpleasant. Bai Ruowei’s expression darkened slightly. She was fully aware of this possessiveness, even finding it perfectly justified.
Song Shizhou was hers. Wasn’t it only natural for her to feel possessive?
Wouldn’t it be abnormal if she didn’t?
“From now on, if you can’t handle something, tell me. Don’t make me have to remind you every time. If you’re not embarrassed, I’m disgusted.”
Angry at Song Shizhou’s lie, Bai Ruowei’s tone was harsh.
Embarrassed. Disgusted. Song Shizhou felt dizzy. She believed Bai Ruowei was standing up for her, but the deliberate emphasis in her tone and the disdain in her expression still chilled Song Shizhou’s heart.
It didn’t feel like a lover’s concern. More like…
Genuine contempt.
Song Shizhou nodded, not daring to dwell on the thought.
“Yes, I understand.”
“Your porridge today was too sweet.”
Miss Bai set the spoon back in place.
“Don’t make it this sweet next time. I don’t like it.”
She had cooked it with the exact same measurements as before not a trace of difference. Miss Bai was meticulous about food, clothing, and daily life, so she was confident there couldn’t have been a mistake.
Therefore, Bai Ruowei was clearly finding fault.
Because things hadn’t gone her way, because Song Shizhou hadn’t been completely honest, Miss Bai had to nitpick, had to throw a tantrum.
Song Shizhou nodded.
“I’m sorry. It won’t happen again.”
The atmosphere grew silent once more. Only after Song Shizhou coaxed her for a while did Bai Ruowei’s mood improve slightly. Amused by Song Shizhou’s submissive demeanor, Bai Ruowei crossed her arms, feeling somewhat satisfied.
The sweet taste of the double-red soup lingered on her lips as she recalled the scene of Song Shizhou calling her “wife” in front of everyone.
The feeling of being loved filled her with pride and confidence, the power of love made her invincible. Mia warned her not to push Song Shizhou too hard, but what did that matter? Bai Ruowei thought. She didn’t just want to love Song Shizhou, she wanted to forcefully wedge herself into her life, to become her everything, to occupy every corner of her mind until there was room for nothing else.
Bai Ruowei lifted her chin arrogantly, a surge of warmth flooding her heart.
Her body grew hot along with it.
The faint scent of Omega pheromones permeated the air, signaling Bai Ruowei’s arousal. Song Shizhou was surprised, unable to comprehend why Bai Ruowei would suddenly be overcome with desire in such a situation.
She glanced around the conference room was hardly an appropriate place to relieve such urges. Gripping Miss Bai’s arm, she pressed it firmly between the other woman’s thighs.
Bai Ruowei stiffened. With her strength, resisting Song Shizhou wouldn’t have been an issue.
Song Shizhou quickly changed the subject.
“I just heard from Mia that you, will soon be going on a business trip to the Thirteenth District.”
Bai Ruowei nodded.
“We have a wedding scheduled for the thirteenth of next month. Will you be available? Will you make it in time?”
She had finally brought it up.
As Bai Ruowei’s wife, she was completely unaware of her schedule. Song Shizhou lowered her eyes. This didn’t just reflect her own inadequacy, it showed how little importance she held in Bai Ruowei’s heart.
Chief Inspector Bai was indeed the busiest person in the Inner City, but counting today, this was already the third time she had proposed marriage.
Song Shizhou pressed her lips together.
She wasn’t obtuse or slow-witted. She knew what such repeated rejections meant.
Bai Ruowei didn’t want to.
Mia had stationed the team members in the neighboring office while she and Li Ningzhi stood guard at the door.
If Mia was Bai Ruowei’s mentor, then Li Ningzhi was her study companion. In any case, both of them shared an intimate, deeply familiar bond with Bai Ruowei.
The voices inside the conference room weren’t loud, and even straining to listen wouldn’t reveal much. But Mia, as a mutant with enhanced vision and hearing, could faintly make out their conversation.
So could Li Ningzhi.
“Including this time, this is Miss Song’s third proposal, isn’t it?”
Li Ningzhi’s tone carried a hint of envy.
“The first was in a sea of flowers such a grand scene. The second was a public confession. This third one is more subdued. The Chief Inspector really ought to agree this time.”
Mia’s pupils shifted slightly.
“She won’t.”
Li Ningzhi pondered for a moment. “Teacher Mia is right. Miss Song isn’t worthy of the Chief Inspector. It’s understandable that she would refuse.”
“Then why doesn’t Miss Bai just reject her outright? Keeping someone she doesn’t like around must be tiresome.”
“Probably because…” Thinking of Song Shizhou’s background and the rumors surrounding her, Mia couldn’t help but chuckle lightly.
“The Chief Inspector likes Miss Song, but what she wants more is for Miss Song to love her forever.”
A fleeting love is still love. A momentary love is still love. Love expressed in a word, a glance, a tone all of it counts as love.
But none of that was what Bai Ruowei wanted.
Love made her proud, made her invincible. She always wanted to remain effortlessly in control. She wanted to artificially impose an expiration date on Song Shizhou’s love for her.
And she wanted that expiration date to be ten thousand years.
