- Chapter 7 - Could I crash here for the night?
Her fingertips hovered in the air, hesitant to enter the sensor range of the smart panel.
Wavering, second-guessing… Gu Lingyi rarely had moments like this.
Her faint, blurry reflection shimmered on the screen.
Her hair was neatly in place…no stray strands in sight. Despite a long, exhausting day, it remained soft, full, and gracefully draped over her shoulders. After a moment’s thought, she pulled a strand forward over her arm to give off a more effortless, relaxed vibe.
Her fox-like eyes had a naturally sharp, playful tilt that could easily come across as mischievous. She tried softening her expression, but that only made her look stern and intimidating, so she quickly gave up on that idea.
Her outfit was impeccably tailored…a formal suit that practically screamed “respectable professional.”
Behind her, the vintage elevator doors slowly slid shut. The narrow hallway was lit only by a single dim, yellow ceiling light. Outside the window, the city lights sparkled, and the nearby office buildings blazed with life.
The soft corner of the quilt had been pressed against her cheek for so long that its tender, gentle touch was beginning to make her drowsy.
Right. She was just… conveniently tired.
And she just happened to be passing by the home of someone she knew…Jiang Yanqing.
Completely reasonable.
Knock, knock, knock…
Bypassing the touch panel and taking a deep breath, she knocked directly on the door of Apartment 1801.
The door swung open…surprisingly fast.
A gentle breeze of cool air drifted out from inside, along with a familiar, refined presence.
Jiang Yanqing stood before her. Over her white magnolia cheongsam, she had draped a light teal silk shawl…the exact same shade as Gu Lingyi’s quilt. She was wearing retro wooden house slippers, revealing her delicate, well-kept toes.
A flicker of surprise flashed deep in her eyes when she saw who was standing outside.
She stood quietly at the threshold with her usual graceful composure, her fingers lightly gathering her shawl. Light poured from the apartment around her, making her look almost ethereal…like a deity stepping down into the mortal world. No matter how many times Gu Lingyi saw her, the sight never failed to take her breath away and send a sudden flutter through her heart.
All of Gu Lingyi’s hesitation and nervous second-guessing evaporated the moment she saw Jiang Yanqing.
Action took over before logic could catch up.
The tip of her shoe slid forward, subtly jamming the door open.
She leaned back against the doorframe with an effortlessly charming, magnetic pose. The warm light hit her face as a bright, captivating smile spread across her lips.
“Could I crash here for the night?”
In the middle of the night, completely hidden from the outside world, the striking “fox-eyed beauty” currently taking the internet by storm was standing at a cold, distant saint’s front door, clutching a massive quilt and asking for a place to stay.
Their eyes met in a long, silent gaze.
For a stretch of time after her words faded, neither of them moved, and neither could tell what the other was thinking.
Eventually, Gu Lingyi failed to catch even a sliver of yield in the other woman’s eyes.
Jiang Yanqing simply maintained her usual polite distance, saying nothing to drive her away. But Gu Lingyi was sharp; in that prolonged silence, she understood everything.
She offered Jiang Yanqing a small, polite nod, her expression full of quiet apology without losing her cool.
“My apologies for disturbing you so late. Get some rest.”
She turned to leave, her silhouette looking strangely solitary. The elevator was descending from the 24th floor, the numbers ticking down slowly as faint light flickered over her face.
Gu Lingyi and her oversized quilt stood quietly by the elevator doors, never once looking back.
When the floor indicator reached 18, the elevator doors slowly slid open. Just as Gu Lingyi stepped one foot inside, a soft, quiet voice sounded behind her.
“Director Gu… if you’re here to discuss business, please come in.”
It was the fifth time Jiang Yanqing had said “please” tonight.
