- Chapter 6 - Get the Hell Out of the Gu House!
Gu Lingyi hadn’t even made it home yet when her phone rang. It was her assistant.
“President Gu, Miss Jiang has arrived home safe and sound.”
“Great work. Doubling your bonus for this month.”
“Thank you, President Gu!”
This was hardly the first time Gu Lingyi had sent her assistant to drop someone off. Chiyin Group had countless suppliers, distributors, and VIP clients; whenever an evening event ran late, she’d personally assign her assistant to escort them home as a gesture of genuine hospitality.
In the past, her assistant would simply drop a text. But tonight, she called directly.
Now that was reading the room.
A faint smile curved Gu Lingyi’s lips, reflected in the car window.
The view on the drive back from the office tonight seemed… surprisingly nice. The trees were lush, the flowers were blooming; maybe she’d bump up the company’s year-end donation to the city landscaping fund…especially for the stretch of road her assistant had just driven down.
The silhouette of the family estate gradually took shape ahead. Perched outside the main gates stood the signature, massive boulder…imposing and majestic, engraved with the grand, sweeping calligraphy of the family name, Gu, passed down from their ancestors.
Yet for some reason, a suspicious crowd of people were sneaking around the rock right now, pointing a barrage of camera lenses straight at the estate.
As Gu Lingyi’s car passed by, it sparked a brief commotion. A flurry of camera flashes went off, but the intelligent smart-tint windows absorbed the glare, reducing it to nothing more than a soft glow in her eyes.
Her mom, her second mother, her two older sisters, and her two sisters-in-law hadn’t sent a single message or call all day. Had something happened at home?
Or did they hold off on calling because they saw her company’s ringing-the-bell ceremony and didn’t want to disturb her?
Her heart suddenly skipped a beat.
It was hard not to overthink. Gu Lingyi was hardly the type to prioritize work over family, and the Gu family knew her personality inside and out.
Which meant the only plausible reason they hadn’t reached out today was that things had spiraled so severely out of control that no one dared interrupt her.
Panicking now, Gu Lingyi quickened her pace under the moonlight, the heels of her leather shoes clicking sharply against the textured pavement.
Her tall silhouette swept through the long corridor, coming to a stop in the center of the ancient, towering inner doorway.
The automated doors didn’t slide open, and the butler seemed to be on leave, failing to greet her at the entrance as usual.
Vintage candlelight stretched her long shadow across the ground, while the distant flashes of media cameras never ceased.
Just as Gu Lingyi was contemplating how to pull open the heavy, outward-swinging doors, they slowly parted before her.
Light spilled through the widening gap, completely enveloping her.
Accustomed to the dim night outside, her eyes squinted against the bright interior illumination.
The moment she reopened them, a gargantuan trunk shot right past her head with a sharp whoosh, landing behind her with a deafening BANG!
Simultaneously, a thunderous voice boomed through the living room’s immersive surround-sound system:
“You rebellious girl! You’ve gone completely off the rails! Have you forgotten our ancestors’ teachings?! GET THE HELL OUT OF THE GU HOUSE!”
BANG—!
The heavy doors slammed shut.
Leaving Gu Lingyi standing all alone in place, thoroughly bewildered.
Out near the giant rock, the camera flashes grew wildly out of hand. Someone whipped out a megaphone and shouted at her:
“President Gu! Have you been kicked out of your family home?!”
“President Gu, have you been removed from the family genealogy?!”
“Do you regret founding Chiyin Group, President Gu?!”
“Say something, President Gu!”
“Is President Gu too heartbroken to accept media interviews right now?!”
The more Gu Lingyi remained silent, the more wildly the paparazzi indulged in their own wild theories. Some had already started posting breaking “scoops” to social media.
On this quiet night, fueled by the viral headline ‘Chiyin Group Founder Kicked Out of House’, the internet was rapidly coming to a boil.
Meanwhile, the main subject of the chaos knew nothing…and cared even less…about the online frenzy. She sat inside her car in a daze, cradling a massive, 50-inch trunk (the giant black box that had just been hurled at her).
For the very first time, this effortlessly relaxed, sultry beauty had her brows deeply furrowed in absolute confusion.
Wait a second… did she accidentally enter the Jiang family’s front door?
Where on earth did these ridiculous lines come from…?
How on earth did she just get kicked out of the house???
Completely unable to make heads or tails of the situation, Gu Lingyi decided to unlatch the trunk first.
The moment it popped open, a huge bulk of fabric burst out.
A water-green velvet comforter.
She was notoriously picky about her bedding; if a blanket didn’t carry her familiar home scent, she couldn’t fall asleep.
Kicking me out, yet thoughtfully packing up everything I actually use… The confusion on Gu Lingyi’s face melted into helpless amusement.
Inside the trunk were all her basic daily essentials. Whoever packed this knew her lifestyle down to the smallest detail…they knew which perfume she was using lately and which pajamas she wore.
The bottom layer felt thick, almost like documents.
When she opened it up, dozens of bright red booklets tumbled out, clattering right into her hands.
Taking a closer look… every single one was a real estate deed.
Gu Lingyi: “…”
This one was the small apartment in the 2nd Ring Road she bought for her mothers after earning her first ten million.
This one was the luxury condo near Chiyin HQ she bought for her older sisters after hitting her first major business milestone.
This one was the traditional courtyard house passed down from the ancestors.
Gu Lingyi counted them one by one. It wasn’t until she reached forty-nine that she finally sorted through the entire stack.
Some were dual-certified properties with land rights…sprawling, independent Siheyuan courtyards…and there were even large flat-floor luxury apartments inside for her two sisters-in-law.
Aside from the main ancestral estate, practically every piece of property owned by the family was sitting right here in this trunk.
Yet, not a single family member had replied to her messages.
The car windows were fully privacy-tinted, blocking out the paparazzi outside who were still desperately trying to catch a glimpse of her. Gu Lingyi was about to randomly select an address from the stack of deeds to crash at for the night, when a line of text suddenly popped up on her digital screen:
Sync navigation history from the nanny van?
Her fingertips paused mid-air. Driven by a strange stroke of impulse, she tapped…
Yes
Xiujie Neighborhood.
According to the property records, this residential complex was built eight years ago and was mostly inhabited by average white-collar workers commuting nearby.
Whether judged by the wealth of the Jiang family or Jiang Yanqing’s lucrative salary and annual bonuses at Zhugao High School, there was no reason she should be living in a place like this.
Not only were the surroundings fairly mediocre, but it was also a full hour’s drive away from the school.
It was late at night. A young white-collar worker was dragging her exhausted body home after working overtime, her eyes half-closed, navigating her way to her apartment door purely on autopilot.
Suddenly, a strange hush fell over the noisy surroundings.
Driven by basic human curiosity, she forced her sleepy eyelids open.
The moment she did, a tall, striking woman strode right past her. Light brown wavy hair swayed in gorgeous, effortless arcs, and a subtle, sophisticated hint of sweet perfume drifted into her nose.
Everyone nearby involuntarily stopped dead in their tracks to stare.
Her stride was captivating, her posture refined yet effortlessly glamorous. She was impossibly gorgeous.
Her breathtaking looks and aura were part of the reason people froze, but the other reason was…
This stunning beauty was carrying a massive, folded duvet in her arms.
The fabric was exquisite, glowing with a soft, lustrous sheen under the streetlights.
The weary worker ended up riding the exact same elevator in the exact same building with the beauty. The enormous duvet took up more than half the space inside the cab.
Fearing she might somehow soil a silk-velvet comforter that probably cost more than her entire lifetime’s salary combined, the worker squeezed herself tightly into the furthest corner.
The elevator glided smoothly to a stop on the 18th floor.
Holding her giant comforter, the gorgeous woman stepped out and stood right before Door 1801.
Her slender, elegant fingertip hovered gently over the digital doorbell icon on the smart screen.
Gu: Wifey, I’m here~ [starry-eyes]
