- After Mistaking My Stepsister’s First Love
- Chapter 92 - The End of the Main Story
With the two individuals apprehended, the heavy weight in Jian Mo’s heart finally lifted.
Although the matter had come to a temporary close, the interrogation of those two and the subsequent series of investigations would take some time to conclude.
Due to the unexpected incident, and since Ye Wenjin was somewhat involved as a party, she took two days off with Mei Yan’s permission. She wanted to ensure Jian Mo was truly alright before returning.
Mei Yan was also shocked when she learned what had happened. After hearing from Ye Wenjin that Jian Mo was out of danger, she sighed in relief and approved the leave, though she made it clear that Ye Wenjin would have to make up for the missed training sessions upon her return.
Ye Wenjin naturally agreed. She was well aware of the fierce competition within the dance troupe, any slack on her part would only widen the gap between her and the others.
However, just as they had settled in for a day of rest, the police suddenly called, requesting their presence. Jian Li had demanded to see Jian Mo before she would cooperate.
Ye Wenjin instinctively didn’t want Jian Mo to go, but the police assured them it would only be a brief meeting, with both parties in separate rooms and no risk of danger.
After some thought, Jian Mo decided to go and see what Jian Li wanted.
Ye Wenjin, of course, accompanied her to the police station, though she didn’t go inside, choosing instead to wait outside for Jian Mo.
She was still somewhat worried, afraid that Jian Li’s words might hurt Jian Mo again. Her gaze kept drifting toward the interior, hoping Jian Mo would come out soon.
But to her surprise, before Jian Mo emerged, she spotted two people she hadn’t seen in a long time.
She had never imagined their reunion would take place in a police station. When Ye Wenjin turned at the sound of movement and recognized the familiar faces, she paused briefly before regaining her composure.
The woman had changed drastically. Once someone who always kept herself neat and tidy no matter how difficult life got, she now wore wrinkled clothes, her face etched with exhaustion, as if life had wrung her dry.
Ye Wenjin didn’t speak.
Yet the moment the woman met her gaze, she froze, her first instinct being to flee.
She didn’t want Ye Wenjin to see her like this.
But before she could move, a voice abruptly shattered the silence.
“Ye Wenjin? Is that you?”
Ye Wenjin followed the voice and saw Yin Feifei. However, compared to the radiant, almost arrogantly confident woman she remembered, the Yin Feifei before her now seemed utterly ordinary.
Even though she had forced Ye Shuyao to shoulder most of the debts and daily expenses, life was still a struggle, far from the carefree days of being a wealthy heiress.
Moreover, the debt collectors didn’t care whether Yin Feifei had pushed the burden onto Ye Shuyao.
As Yin Yu’s daughter, they naturally didn’t let her off the hook. Harassment was one thing, but when she couldn’t pay, they sometimes beat her up.
Unable to endure such humiliation, Yin Feifei would take out her anger on Ye Shuyao whenever she was assaulted, ensuring she had a punching bag.
Thus, Ye Shuyao’s life grew increasingly miserable. Several times, she had tried to run away, but she never succeeded.
Yin Feifei was younger and an Alpha controlling her was effortless.
Unable to escape or resist, Ye Shuyao grew more and more desperate. Occasionally, while being beaten by Yin Feifei, a thought would flicker through her mind:
If Ye Wenjin were still by her side, even if they had left Yin Yu, she would never have been treated like this.
Her Ah Jin was the most filial and obedient to her. Even if times were tough, she would never hit or scold her like Yin Feifei did.
If Ye Wenjin were here, she wouldn’t be reduced to this state, stripped of even the most basic human dignity.
Only now did Ye Shuyao realize how terribly wrong she had been. She had pushed her own daughter away with her own hands, and regret surged over her like a tidal wave, threatening to drown her.
In her daze, she began to wonder when exactly had her attitude toward Ye Wenjin started to change?
When Ah Jin was first born, she had adored her. Just the sight of that tiny bundle in her arms had filled her heart with joy.
Ah Jin was her first and only child. She had watched her grow from a little baby who couldn’t even speak into the person she was today.
Her first word had been “Mama.” If anyone asked Ah Jin who she loved most, she would always say it was her, much to Guan You’s chagrin.
So why… why had their once-happy life come to this?
Ye Shuyao’s face was blank with shock, but the memory of that little child in her arms slowly faded, replaced by the cold, indifferent woman standing not far away.
For a moment, Ye Shuyao couldn’t bear the stark contrast.
Yet no matter how she felt, Ye Wenjin had already withdrawn her gaze the moment she recognized who had arrived, treating them as if they were strangers.
But while she wanted nothing to do with them, someone else refused to let it go.
Yin Feifei had always held herself in high regard, but after enduring days of humiliation, her pride had been utterly shattered.
What she never expected was to see Ye Wenjin again under such circumstances with their positions completely reversed from the past.
Back then, when Ye Shuyao had brought Ye Wenjin to her home, Yin Feifei had been the high-and-mighty young miss, while Ye Wenjin was nothing but an unwanted burden, inferior to her in every way.
But now, she was the one who had fallen into the dirt, while Ye Wenjin had gained the power to look down on her.
Yin Feifei gritted her teeth in hatred. Seeing Ye Wenjin ignore her, fury and jealousy burned through her, consuming her reason.
She couldn’t accept this outcome.
It was all because of Ye Wenjin. Because of her, their family had gone bankrupt. Because of her, she had been reduced to this miserable state!
If she had been the one to win Jian Mo’s favor back then, the Yin family would never have fallen this far. Her mother wouldn’t be in prison, and she wouldn’t have gone from a privileged heiress to a worthless commoner.
Reason burned away, and malice rose in its place. Slowly, Yin Feifei reached into her pocket and pulled out a small knife.
She had started carrying it after being constantly harassed by debt collectors, fearing they might beat her to death.
It had been an impulsive purchase, but she had kept it on her ever since. Now, blinded by rage and envy, she lunged at Ye Wenjin with the blade.
It happened too fast. No one expected Yin Feifei to dare attack someone right in the police station.
Jian Mo, who had just stepped out, saw it all. Her pupils constricted in horror as she tried to rush forward, but the officers held her back. All she could do was shout a warning.
Ye Wenjin heard Jian Mo’s voice and sensed something was wrong with Yin Feifei but she never imagined Yin Feifei would pull out a knife and try to kill her.
In the blink of an eye, the scene before her seemed to slow down countless times.
She saw the police rushing out, and she also saw Ye Shuyao suddenly lunge forward, chasing after Yin Feifei, grabbing her and wrestling her to the ground…
By the time everything settled, Ye Wenjin slowly blinked, still not fully recovered from the crisis. Yet, out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of Ye Shuyao lying in a pool of blood just two steps away, her face deathly pale, while Yin Feifei stood frozen in shock.
In an instant, screams, the frantic footsteps of the police, and Jian Mo’s anxious cries erupted all at once, plunging everything back into chaos.
Ye Wenjin stared fixedly at Ye Shuyao in the bloodstained scene, her face filled with bewilderment.
After rushing Ye Shuyao to the hospital and learning that, though injured, she hadn’t sustained any life-threatening wounds, Ye Wenjin sat on a bench in the hallway, staring blankly at the floor.
In truth, after the incident, Yin Feifei had been swiftly restrained, while Ye Shuyao was urgently taken to the hospital.
Now that she knew the other woman was out of danger, the tension in Ye Wenjin’s body gradually eased.
She truly hadn’t planned to have any further involvement with Ye Shuyao, but she also hadn’t wished for her death, let alone for her to die saving her.
If Ye Shuyao had really died that way… what would that even mean?
Ye Wenjin’s thoughts were in turmoil. She didn’t go to see Ye Shuyao, simply sitting there in a daze, lost in thought.
Jian Mo had stayed by her side the entire time. Seeing her like this, she couldn’t help but sigh softly.
“A-Jin, what are you thinking about?”
Ye Wenjin snapped out of her trance, her gaze slowly focusing on Jian Mo after a long moment.
“Sister…” Then she lowered her eyes, as though the floor held some inexplicable fascination.
Jian Mo didn’t press further, simply staying quietly by her side. After a long silence, a very soft voice finally spoke up.
“I don’t even know what I’m thinking…” Ye Wenjin paused briefly before suddenly adding, “Sister, what do you think was going through her mind when she rushed forward?”
Jian Mo stroked her head, gently guiding her to lean against her shoulder, and said calmly, “I don’t know either. Maybe it was a mother’s instinct, or maybe something else.”
“But she did save me, didn’t she?”
Jian Mo neither confirmed nor denied it.
It was true that Ye Shuyao had saved Ye Wenjin, but it was also true that she had hurt her in the past.
Sometimes, things were just that complicated not simply black or white, but a tangled mix of good and bad that one had to discern for themselves.
Ye Wenjin fell silent for a long time before letting out a deep sigh.
“I think… I want to find a place to settle her.”
Jian Mo nodded. “Alright, I’ll help you look.”
Ye Wenjin looked at her. “Aren’t you going to try to talk me out of it?”
Jian Mo smiled instead. “I trust A-Jin to make her own judgments. And I know my A-Jin is very kind.”
Ye Wenjin sounded a little dejected, her voice muffled. “But I don’t want to do more than this. I won’t accept her back into my life because of this. No matter what her reasons were for saving me, the fact remains that she did. But this is all I can do.”
Yin Feifei’s deliberate act of violence had been witnessed clearly by the police, leaving no need for further investigation her fate was imprisonment.
And once Yin Feifei was behind bars, Ye Shuyao’s life would only become harder.
You reap what you sow that was what Ye Wenjin had always believed.
But Ye Shuyao had saved her once. Regardless of her motives, that was the truth.
So, she would find a safe and quiet place for her, a shelter to protect her from debt collectors but nothing more. It would be up to Ye Shuyao herself to decide how to live.
When Ye Shuyao woke up and learned of Ye Wenjin’s plans, she was surprisingly calm. She didn’t make a fuss or demand more benefits for herself, merely nodding lightly in response.
On the day Ye Shuyao was discharged from the hospital, Ye Wenjin still went, though she didn’t show herself. She watched as Ye Shuyao packed her things and left with the person Jian Mo had sent.
At that moment, she felt a long-lost sense of relief, as if the world around her had brightened considerably.
Whatever grudges had existed in the past, in this moment, they turned to dust and returned to the earth.
Ye Wenjin was considering whether to go to the company to find Jian Mo when, in the blink of an eye, she spotted Jian Mo standing not far away. Instantly, a wide smile bloomed across her face.
She ran over in delight. “Sister? What are you doing here?”
Jian Mo smiled faintly. “I knew you’d come.”
Ye Wenjin grinned ingratiatingly, watching as Jian Mo shook her head helplessly.
“Let’s go. It’s time to go home.”
Ye Wenjin smiled, interlacing her fingers with Jian Mo’s. “Mm, let’s go home.”
