- After Mistaking My Stepsister’s First Love
- Chapter 9 - Sister’s Hand, So Warm, So Fair.
Although they were supposed to go for the premarital checkup, Ye Wenjin realized they might not have enough time because she still had an extracurricular practical session in the afternoon.
Gradually, her mind cooled down as she thought it through carefully.
The premarital checkup involved quite a few items, each requiring a significant amount of time. Calculating it all, she feared they wouldn’t be able to accomplish anything today.
At this thought, Ye Wenjin felt a pang of disappointment again. After hesitating for a couple of seconds, she still spoke up, “Sister, I have a mandatory practical class at two in the afternoon. As for the checkup… we might not have enough time.”
Jian Mo didn’t respond immediately, seemingly deep in thought. Ye Wenjin didn’t disturb her and quietly waited for her answer.
“We’ll make it. Don’t worry.”
The voice carried a soothing tone, inexplicably reassuring.
Ye Wenjin didn’t quite understand, but she trusted Jian Mo.
It wasn’t until they arrived at the hospital and saw the director personally coming to greet Jian Mo that everything clicked into place.
They really would make it.
This hospital seemed to have Jian Mo’s investment, no wonder she said they had enough time.
There was no need for an appointment; just a word from her, and they could proceed with the checkup.
Ye Wenjin was momentarily stunned, finally realizing how limited her own experience was.
Perhaps Jian Mo was the very embodiment of privilege.
So, dazed, she followed behind Jian Mo as they went through each examination.
Watching her back, for a fleeting moment, Ye Wenjin seemed to catch a glimpse of a motherly figure in her.
But she knew very well Ye Shuyao had never treated her that well.
When she was little, it had been somewhat better. Though Ye Shuyao found it troublesome, she would still take her along those were the rare moments of maternal love she had received.
But as she grew older, her mother’s concern dwindled. Ye Shuyao had too many of her own matters to attend to, leaving no time to care for her. Thus, Ye Wenjin was forced to learn how to take care of herself.
Being sick wasn’t a big deal. Going to the hospital alone wasn’t a big deal either.
After all, practice makes perfect. If she wasn’t familiar with it at first, a few more visits would make it routine.
Yet at this moment, she actually felt, warmth from Jian Mo.
It suddenly dawned on Ye Wenjin, what she sensed from Jian Mo was likely the same feeling she had during those rare moments when Ye Shuyao still showed her love.
Back then, Ye Shuyao had given her warmth too. It was just that it had disappeared over time.
Unconsciously, Ye Wenjin slowed her steps, her gaze fixed on Jian Mo walking ahead.
She vaguely remembered a time when she had a fever as a child. But Ye Shuyao had just married into the Yin family and was wholly focused on pleasing Yin Yu. The timing of her fever couldn’t have been worse.
Yin Yu was attending a banquet, and Ye Shuyao was supposed to accompany her. After all, at such events, she could mingle with wealthy socialites, befriend them, and integrate into their circles as if that could mask her less-than-ideal background.
But then, Ye Wenjin suddenly fell ill.
Yin Yu, heading to the banquet, couldn’t be bothered with her stepdaughter. In her eyes, since Ye Shuyao had brought her along, she was responsible for her.
So Ye Shuyao stayed behind but reluctantly. Even when Ye Wenjin, delirious with fever, instinctively sought comfort from her, all she got was an impatient, dismissive remark.
‘Be good, Xiao Jin. Just endure it a little longer.’
Lying on the hospital bed, Ye Wenjin saw the impatience and irritation in Ye Shuyao’s eyes.
She was blaming her for falling ill so suddenly, costing her the chance to attend the banquet.
Even if she hadn’t meant to get sick on purpose.
Ye Wenjin was still young at the time. She was afraid that Ye Shuyao would stop loving her, so she endured the discomfort without saying a word.
It wasn’t until the doctor arrived and examined her that they realized her fever hadn’t gone down, she was practically burning up.
Ye Shuyao was scolded by the frustrated doctor, which only made her even more displeased.
Ye Wenjin could sense it Ye Shuyao was starting to see her as a burden.
After that, though her fever eventually subsided, Ye Shuyao’s attitude remained a thorn in her heart.
Ye Wenjin learned to stop relying on others, afraid of being seen as a nuisance or facing impatient looks.
But with Jian Mo, she hadn’t even noticed those thoughts never surfaced.
Maybe it was because Jian Mo’s attitude was so natural that she didn’t even realize it.
Yet, when it came down to it, they were practically strangers. But…
Somewhere deep inside, she felt warm, the heat spreading through her body until she was completely enveloped in it.
Ye Wenjin was dazed, lagging a few steps behind, not even noticing when Jian Mo stopped and walked back to her.
“How can you space out while walking?”
Ye Wenjin snapped back to reality, opening her mouth to apologize, but before she could, Jian Mo reached out a hand to her.
Her gaze was calm, earnest as she asked, “Want to hold hands?”
Ye Wenjin froze.
Could… could they?
She gulped, hesitating for a long time before finally trembling as she extended her hand wanting to but not daring to.
Seeing her hesitation, Jian Mo sighed softly and took her hand first. “Stop spacing out. Don’t you have things to do this afternoon? Let’s go.”
Her brain short-circuited.
Ye Wenjin stared blankly at their joined hands, and after a moment, she secretly tightened her grip just a little.
Only the tips of her ears, hidden beneath her hair, quietly turned red.
Jiejie’s hand was so warm, so fair, so slender.
The most beautiful hand!
And jiejie was the gentlest person too!
