- Chapter 58.1 - Is the Mating Season Coming?
The two exchanged a glance, then awkwardly lowered their heads in unison.
Seeing their reaction, Ye Wenjin slowly raised a questioning eyebrow. After a brief hesitation, she asked, “Is it… inconvenient to say?”
Chu Yunsheng gave an embarrassed chuckle. “It’s not exactly inconvenient, just… well, I don’t really know why myself…”
Her gaze began to wander.
This reaction only piqued Ye Wenjin’s curiosity further. She instinctively leaned closer to Chu Yunsheng, wanting to hear more clearly.
But out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the others were also staring in their direction.
Apparently, everyone was curious.
Chu Yunsheng: “…”
She looked everywhere but at them.
The group: Staring intently—
Under their relentless gaze, Chu Yunsheng finally caved after futile resistance. “Alright, alright! It’s really nothing special. At the time, Zhou Wuhua and I went shopping and accidentally ran into that group. At first, we all minded our own business peacefully, but then we bumped into them again while picking out items.”
She paused, then continued in a peculiar tone, “You know that feeling?”
Ye Wenjin glanced around before playing along, “What feeling?”
“That sense of incompatible auras! At one point, I suddenly locked eyes with their leader, and for some inexplicable reason, we started sizing each other up. It began with just glaring at each other, but after enough exchanges, neither of us could stand the sight of the other, and suddenly we were hurling insults…”
Chu Yunsheng found the memory utterly ridiculous. “Honestly, the conflict started over something completely trivial. Haha, pretty weird, right?”
The group: “…”
That was indeed rather bizarre.
Ye Wenjin exhaled slowly. “That’s… certainly an unexpected reason.”
Chu Yunsheng hung her head in shame.
Zhou Wuhua closed her eyes briefly.
But soon she reopened them and quietly explained, “We didn’t mean for it to escalate at first. But there were so many of them, and their insults were so vile, so…”
She couldn’t hold back either.
A few exchanged barbs would have been one thing, but when the other party started hurling particularly nasty insults at Chu Yunsheng, Zhou Wuhua couldn’t take it and immediately fired back.
Now that rationality had returned, the thought of having publicly engaged in a shouting match with a whole group made Zhou Wuhua want to bury herself in the sand.
The way she had cursed at them…
Although they’d caught a glimpse of that side of her before, it had only been a hint. Today, however, she’d held nothing back.
In the heat of the moment, Zhou Wuhua hadn’t considered the consequences. But now, with clarity restored, she couldn’t help worrying—especially since Chu Yunsheng had witnessed everything.
Would Chu Yunsheng… think she was too crude?
After all, she was nothing like Chu Yunsheng, who had been raised with impeccable manners. Zhou Wuhua had grown up surrounded by foul language, absorbing all sorts of vulgar insults.
Fully aware of her true nature, Zhou Wuhua knew this side of her wasn’t appealing.
So now, with rationality regained, a deep fear welled up inside her—the fear of seeing disgust in Chu Yunsheng’s eyes.
With these thoughts weighing on her, Zhou Wuhua’s expression grew visibly downcast.
But the next second, she heard Chu Yunsheng’s indignant voice, “Exactly! It’s totally not our fault—they were the ones who started with the nasty insults! If it weren’t for Zhou Wuhua, we would’ve lost that argument. Since we were already in it, of course we couldn’t afford to lose!”
Zhou Wuhua paused, instinctively glancing at Chu Yunsheng, only to find her brimming with pride, as if winning the argument was some grand victory.
The dark clouds in Zhou Wuhua’s heart gradually dispersed. The corners of her lips curled upward, and a hint of amusement flickered in her eyes.
Ye Wenjin, who had been quietly observing the two of them, couldn’t help but chuckle as well.
“Well, it’s a good thing Zhou Wuhua was there, or else we might’ve lost that fight.”
Chu Yunsheng immediately lifted her chin, triumphant. “Right? I make perfect sense!”
Rong Yunshu shook her head, choosing not to engage to avoid another argument, and simply closed her eyes to rest.
Now that she knew it wasn’t anything serious, Ye Wenjin finally relaxed.
But as she lay down, she suddenly realized something was off.
Jian Mo—she was being way too quiet.
Alarmed, Ye Wenjin quickly turned to look at her and found her lying still, only her eyelashes fluttering faintly.
Relieved, Ye Wenjin got up and crouched beside her, whispering softly, “Jiejie? Are you asleep?”
Jian Mo opened her eyes instantly. “No, what’s wrong, Xiao Jin?”
Ye Wenjin had thought she was asleep and was surprised to find her awake. Still, she shook her head. “Nothing, I just thought you were sleeping. Jiejie, are you tired? Should we head back?”
Jian Mo simply gazed at Ye Wenjin, watching as she crouched beside her, looking up with concern. Her heart softened inexplicably.
“I am a little tired, Xiao Jin…”
“Then let’s go back first. Jiejie, let’s go rest.”
Jian Mo hesitated. “You can stay and keep playing.”
Ye Wenjin shook her head. “We can play another time. If you’re tired, I’ll go back with you to rest. Even if we miss out on anything, we can always come back. Your health is the most important.”
Jian Mo smiled faintly and reached out to touch her, but before her hand could fully extend, Ye Wenjin instinctively leaned in, tilting her head to nuzzle against Jian Mo’s palm.
It all felt so natural that Ye Wenjin didn’t even notice the others around them—until she caught Chu Yunsheng’s overly enthusiastic gaze.
Her face immediately flushed red, and she averted her eyes in embarrassment.
Chu Yunsheng looked like she was savoring the moment. “You can totally pretend we’re not here, seriously. Look, we’re not even saying anything.”
Ah, watching other people in love is truly the sweetest thing!
Oh wait—no, this is a real married couple.
Hiss—somehow that makes it even sweeter.
Noticing Ye Wenjin’s deepening blush, Chu Yunsheng reluctantly reined in her excitement, though her teasing gaze remained.
Ye Wenjin’s shyness was just instinctive—she wasn’t used to being affectionate in front of so many people.
But the embarrassment faded quickly, as her concern for Jian Mo’s well-being took precedence.
After saying their goodbyes, Ye Wenjin and Jian Mo returned to the villa together.
Fortunately, Jian Mo seemed much better once they were back.
Perhaps the discomfort had indeed been caused by the crowd overstimulating her glands.
Only when she confirmed that Jian Mo’s condition had stabilized did Ye Wenjin finally let out a sigh of relief.
“Sis, you haven’t seemed quite yourself these past couple of days. Is there an issue with your glands? Or is the suppressant patch not working?”
Jian Mo shook her head, her expression clearly hesitant, but when she met Ye Wenjin’s concerned gaze, her resistance suddenly softened.
She exhaled slowly. “Actually… if I’m not mistaken, I think my heat cycle is coming soon.”
It took Ye Wenjin two full seconds to process what Jian Mo was saying, her pupils dilating abruptly.
“Wh-what? H-heat cycle?”
Ye Wenjin gulped audibly, the sound conspicuously loud in the quiet room.
Jian Mo suddenly laughed. “It’s my heat cycle, why are you the one getting nervous?”
Ye Wenjin: “…”
She didn’t want to be nervous, but she couldn’t help it!
Just the thought of what an Omega’s heat cycle entailed made Ye Wenjin’s anxiety spike uncontrollably—though she probably shouldn’t be this anxious.
But a heat cycle was incredibly taxing for Omegas, lasting around five days with no breaks. During this time, their bodies underwent significant changes—weakness, feverishness, among other symptoms. And then there was… the heightened desire.
Animals suffered during their mating seasons, and humans were no different.
Ye Wenjin had only witnessed it once before—when her mother, Ye Shuyao, had gone into heat. The sight had terrified her because she’d never seen Ye Shuyao like that before. Even though her mother had quickly sought out Yin Yu, the memory had seared itself into Ye Wenjin’s mind.
Ye Shuyao’s expression had been one of torment and agony.
As a result, in Ye Wenjin’s mind, an Omega’s heat cycle was synonymous with suffering. The mere thought of Jian Mo enduring that made her anxiety flare uncontrollably.
Generally, Omegas had two ways to cope with their heat: either tough it out with suppressants or spend it with their Alpha.
The former always took some toll on the body, while the latter…
The moment that thought surfaced, Ye Wenjin’s face burned crimson, and she immediately forced herself to stop.
But the harder she tried not to think about it, the clearer the images became in her mind. Within moments, her entire body was radiating heat.
Jian Mo watched the transformation with fascination before chuckling softly. Her voice was teasing as she drawled, “Xiao Jin, what’s on your mind? Your expression is so—” She studied Ye Wenjin for a beat, then parted her red lips to murmur two words.
“Indulgent.”
The moment she heard it, Ye Wenjin’s face burned even hotter.
Jian Mo’s bluntness sent her shame skyrocketing. Her eyes widened. “Wh-what? N-no, I wasn’t—I didn’t—”
She waved her hands frantically, desperate to prove she hadn’t been imagining anything inappropriate, but every twitch of her expression and movement betrayed her.
Jian Mo didn’t say anything else, merely watching Ye Wenjin with an amused smirk.
After a long silence, Ye Wenjin finally hung her head, guiltily admitting, “I… I’m sorry. I couldn’t control myself. I disrespected you, sis.”
Her expression was full of self-reproach, as if scolding herself for failing to rein in her thoughts.
Heart pounding nervously, Ye Wenjin kept her head lowered, not daring to look at Jian Mo’s reaction as she braced for reprimand.
But what she received wasn’t scolding—instead, a warm hand gently settled atop her head.
Ye Wenjin suddenly looked up and found herself staring directly into Jian Mo’s smiling eyes.
“Xiao Jin, I don’t feel offended at all. In fact, I find it rather… amusing. You’re just too easy to tease.”
Ye Wenjin gazed at her with puppy-dog eyes, her voice pitiful. “Really? You’re not angry with me, sister?”
Jian Mo shook her head, the corners of her lips curling upward. “Of course not. I was just teasing you because your expressions were so entertaining.”
Ye Wenjin scrutinized her face carefully, only relaxing after triple-checking her sincerity.
“As long as you’re not angry. I thought I’d upset you.”
Jian Mo patted her head with an inexplicable tone. “Why are you so naive, Xiao Jin?”
A flicker passed through Ye Wenjin’s eyes as she thought of her hidden intentions. She nuzzled against Jian Mo’s palm and murmured, “Actually, I’m not that naive, sister.”
Jian Mo dismissed it casually. “Is that so? But I still think you’re overly innocent.”
Ye Wenjin mumbled something under her breath.
Jian Mo arched an eyebrow. “What was that?”
Ye Wenjin quickly shook her head. “Nothing!”
Jian Mo kept looking at her, and under that gaze, Ye Wenjin’s body stiffened. Fortunately, Jian Mo soon averted her eyes, allowing Ye Wenjin to exhale in relief.
“But sister, wouldn’t it be better for you to rest at home these next few days?”
Ye Wenjin pondered, feeling that Jian Mo’s current condition was somewhat precarious. If her heat suddenly struck while they were out, and her pheromones leaked, it would undoubtedly attract danger.
Just the thought of it made Ye Wenjin’s brows furrow with worry.
Jian Mo considered for a moment before replying, “Don’t worry. I’ve calculated the timing—my heat is still three days away. We’ll be back from the trip in time. I might just feel a bit more fatigued these days, but it’s not a big issue.”
Ye Wenjin wanted to say more, but Jian Mo fixed her with a serious gaze and spoke slowly, “Xiao Jin, once we return, you’ll start preparing to join Teacher Mei’s dance troupe, right? You won’t have much free time after that. So… don’t you want to spend more time with me? Don’t worry, I know my own body.”
Ye Wenjin froze. Though she still didn’t want Jian Mo to take the risk, hearing those words made her lips part hesitantly—yet she couldn’t bring herself to voice any objections.
With a sigh, Ye Wenjin finally relented. “Alright, I understand. Then let’s adjust our plans a little—skip the more physically demanding activities, okay?”
This time, Jian Mo didn’t refuse. She simply nodded with a smile.
Ye Wenjin breathed a sigh of relief, though she knew the original itinerary had been something everyone had looked forward to. Any changes would need to be discussed with the group.
It felt a bit like dampening the mood, so she considered an alternative: perhaps Rong Yunshu and the others could stick to the original plan, while she and Jian Mo could join them for less strenuous activities and rearrange their own schedule for the rest of the time.
That way, no one would feel disappointed.
Still, Ye Wenjin couldn’t help but feel a twinge of regret. Yet she understood clearly that the most important thing wasn’t the trip itself—it was being with Jian Mo.
So during dinner that evening, Ye Wenjin brought it up, though she omitted any mention of Jian Mo’s heat, simply explaining that she wasn’t feeling well and might not be able to continue with the original travel plans.
“Oh, I thought it was something serious. But Sister Jian’s health comes first. I don’t mind adjusting the plans—participating in some light, leisurely activities sounds fun too.”
Chu Yunsheng was the first to voice her opinion. After all, she had arranged all the travel expenses and logistics for this trip, so it wouldn’t be fair for the others to take advantage and still complain.
“Travel plans are trivial. Should we go to the hospital for a check-up first? If you’re really not feeling well, we can head back early.”
Rong Yunjuan was more considerate, her eyes filled with concern as she spoke.
Even if Jian Mo wasn’t an Omega, health issues should always be taken seriously.
Zhou Wuhua also nodded in agreement with Rong Yunjuan’s suggestion.
Rong Yunshu pondered for a moment before saying, “Let’s first confirm how her health is. We can discuss the travel plans later.”
Hearing their discussion, Ye Wenjin felt a warmth in her heart.
Even though the trip was suddenly interrupted, no one expressed dissatisfaction. Instead, they were all trying to come up with solutions. She knew it was disappointing, but she didn’t say much—after all, Jian Mo’s health was the priority.
