After Losing My Memory, I Suddenly Had A Fiancée - Chapter 46
Ji Fanghuai sent a message to Xin Ling asking, “Address.”
“Xinyang Grand Hotel 608. Remember to bring your ID when you leave, or you might not be able to get in,” Xin Ling was very thoughtful.
Ji Fanghuai: “Understood.”
When Ji Fanghuai left, snow was already falling outside. To the naked eye, it looked almost like fine rain, but when it landed on her clothes, shining a flashlight on it revealed distinct six-sided snowflakes.
It was already 11:30 at night, a snowy, freezing night. Fortunately, the hotel wasn’t far from where she was.
Ji Fanghuai didn’t realize it had started snowing when she went downstairs, so she hadn’t brought an umbrella. She casually pulled the hood of her overcoat over her head. The wide brim shielded her from some of the cold, and she immediately felt much warmer.
There wasn’t a soul on the road. Ji Fanghuai used a ride-hailing app to call a car, and it took almost two minutes for someone to accept the order.
Ji Fanghuai stood waiting for the car in the cold night. She had never hailed a taxi this late before, and being naturally timid, coupled with the numerous news reports of ride-hailing incidents, she felt a wave of fear.
She waited for about ten minutes, her face frozen, when a white Changan slowly drove up. The driver was a middle-aged man who spoke Mandarin with a strong accent.
“Going to a hotel so late, miss?”
“Yes,” Ji Fanghuai replied very coldly, only wishing the driver would concentrate on the road and not cause an accident.
The driver turned and gave her a strange look, then said, “I’ll follow the navigation then?”
“Mhm,” Ji Fanghuai responded vaguely. The driver probably thought she was going to catch a cheating spouse, given that she was going to a hotel late at night.
She kept a close watch on the map. The journey was smooth, and as the destination grew nearer, Ji Fanghuai called Jiang Zhi. If Jiang Zhi was fine, she would immediately turn around and go home to sleep.
However, the call went unanswered.
The “unanswered” status was what worried Ji Fanghuai the most; being powered off would have been better.
If the phone was off, it could be due to a dead battery, but “unanswered” meant Jiang Zhi was either deliberately ignoring her call or had lost the ability to answer it.
The former was obviously unlikely, and the latter…
Ji Fanghuai, with her overactive imagination, already pictured Jiang Zhi collapsing in bed from a stomach ache, unable to answer the phone. She strode quickly into the hotel. The five-star hotel’s security was excellent, and the receptionist, upon learning she wasn’t checking in, adamantly refused her entry.
“Hello, for the privacy and safety of our guests, we must have Ms. Jiang’s consent before allowing you in. However, it is currently resting time, and it is inconvenient to disturb the guest. Please contact Ms. Jiang beforehand.”
“I am her friend, and I have an urgent matter,” Ji Fanghuai said, her heart burning with anxiety. Without waiting for the receptionist’s reply, she took out her ID and showed a photo of her and Jiang Zhi that they hadn’t gotten around to deleting, proving they were indeed acquainted. Only then was she allowed to enter.
Ji Fanghuai took the room card the receptionist gave her and held her breath as she swiped the door open, afraid of what state Jiang Zhi might be in.
Jiang Zhi was lying on the large hotel bed, her face flushed red. Beside the bed were half-eaten fever-reducing capsules and her laptop.
Ji Fanghuai hadn’t expected Jiang Zhi to have a fever. The moment she touched her, she felt Jiang Zhi’s body was scorching hot. She quickly took out a wet wipe and placed it on her forehead, pondering whether to call 911 or wait for Jiang Zhi to wake up and decide for herself.
“Fanghuai?” Jiang Zhi thought she was delirious from the fever; Ji Fanghuai was actually next to her. She immediately sat up.
But her body was weak, and she instantly collapsed back down after sitting up.
Ji Fanghuai reached out to support her. Jiang Zhi grasped her arm with her hot hand, and Ji Fanghuai felt the air she exhaled was burning. She had intended to speak gently, but when she opened her mouth, it was an explosion.
“You have such a high fever, why didn’t you go to the hospital? Can lying here cure you? It’s your own body; if you don’t care for it, no one else will!”
Ji Fanghuai’s voice was a bit loud out of distress. Jiang Zhi was instantly stunned. Perhaps not fully awake yet, she showed a look of grievance and said, “Not even you care?”
“Who are you to me? Why should I care!” Ji Fanghuai said as she moved to check the fever medicine nearby. However, Jiang Zhi thought she was leaving and desperately tried to reach out and hug her.
“I’m your fiancée, girlfriend, sister,” Jiang Zhi said incoherently.
Ji Fanghuai said coldly, “We’ve already broken up.”
Jiang Zhi whispered in her ear, “I didn’t agree.”
Ji Fanghuai acted somewhat unreasonably, saying, “Then you can date the Ji Fanghuai who didn’t agree to break up.”
“I only want you…” Jiang Zhi seemed only capable of repeating this single sentence, constantly whispering it in Ji Fanghuai’s ear, though her voice grew fainter and fainter.
Ji Fanghuai grew worried when Jiang Zhi lost energy again. She gently coaxed her to let go, then found a towel, wrung it out, and applied it for a cold compress to bring down her temperature.
She even suspected Jiang Zhi was deliberately avoiding the hospital, just so the situation would become severe enough for her to come.
Otherwise, how could Xin Ling have known so precisely?
Ji Fanghuai saw a thermometer gun nearby and scanned Jiang Zhi’s forehead.
38.6.
Only knowing that below 37.3 was a normal temperature, Ji Fanghuai immediately searched online what happens when an adult’s fever reaches 38.6. The answer suggested a possibility of brain damage.
Ji Fanghuai: “…”
She pulled Jiang Zhi, insisting on taking her to the hospital.
Jiang Zhi was much more lucid now and said, “Take the medicine to bring the fever down first. If it’s really necessary, we’ll go tomorrow. It’s so late now, let’s not make a fuss.”
Ji Fanghuai said sternly, “It might cause brain damage.”
Jiang Zhi clearly knew more than she did and said, “Only prolonged high fever might cause brain damage. I haven’t been feverish for long, and I feel like the temperature has dropped a little now.”
Ji Fanghuai casually picked up the thermometer gun and checked again.
38.5.
Perhaps the external cooling was working. Ji Fanghuai stopped insisting on taking her to the hospital and began to take out the fever medicine, only to discover that the medicine had also been delivered by a delivery service.
She pictured Jiang Zhi alone in the hotel, with no one to call upon, having to rely on the delivery person to bring the fever medicine.
Where was the assistant?
Why didn’t she call her?
Ji Fanghuai actually had a vague answer in her mind. Jiang Zhi had been somewhat afraid of her since their last cold exchange and dared not contact her, but she wasn’t that unreasonable.
She had come now, hadn’t she?
Ji Fanghuai put the medicine to her mouth and said, “Take the medicine.”
Jiang Zhi obediently took the medicine and said, “I thought it was just a minor cold yesterday, and I ignored it because I was busy with work and didn’t even visit your shop. Then, when I woke up today, I felt weak all over and have been lying here ever since. I didn’t even want to reach for my ringing phone. Maybe I’m getting old, and my body isn’t as healthy as before.”
“What does your visiting the shop have to do with me? Xin Ling asked me to come,” Ji Fanghuai said dryly.
Jiang Zhi had been very happy that she came, showing she still cared about her. But hearing that it was at Xin Ling’s request made her feel a little disappointed, though she then thought that without Xin Ling’s request, Ji Fanghuai wouldn’t have known where she was staying.
She smiled and said, “It’s enough that you’re willing to come. I’m very happy.”
Perhaps because of the fever medicine, her eyelids felt heavy and ready to close at any moment, but she still refused to sleep, afraid that Ji Fanghuai would be gone when she woke up.
Ji Fanghuai had always seen Jiang Zhi full of energy and had never witnessed her fighting off sleep. Seeing the current scene, she felt a pang of sympathy.
She said, “I won’t leave. You can sleep assuredly.”
Jiang Zhi’s sleepiness immediately vanished. She moved over to the side of the bed and said, “It’s late. You should come up and sleep too.”
Ji Fanghuai rejected her without hesitation, saying, “No need.”
She could rest another day tomorrow if need be.
“I’m afraid I’ll still have a high fever tonight and genuinely get a brain injury,” Jiang Zhi pleaded softly, “Will you sleep on the bed? If you feel I’m still too hot, just call 911.”
Seeing Jiang Zhi’s sincere eyes, humble tone, and flushed face, Ji Fanghuai seemed unable to refuse. She reluctantly nodded. She only took off her coat before getting onto the bed, keeping her trousers on, and maintaining a considerable distance between them.
Jiang Zhi truly fell asleep this time.
Ji Fanghuai was constantly worried that Jiang Zhi might genuinely suffer brain damage from the fever. She couldn’t fall asleep at all, constantly waking up to check her temperature. Fortunately, Jiang Zhi’s fever broke completely in the latter half of the night, and Ji Fanghuai finally got a peaceful sleep.
When Ji Fanghuai woke up, Jiang Zhi was still sound asleep on her side. She casually picked up the thermometer gun and checked her temperature again: 37.7, almost within the normal range, though her lips were still a bit dry.
Ji Fanghuai never thought there would be a day when she would be taking care of Jiang Zhi.
She picked up her phone and ordered a bowl of shiitake mushroom and shrimp congee.
The snow outside the window was blindingly white. It must have snowed heavily last night. Ji Fanghuai quietly closed the window.
Since the hotel did not allow external personnel to enter easily, the delivery could only be dropped off in the hotel lobby. Ji Fanghuai had to go downstairs to fetch it.
She didn’t know how many days Jiang Zhi had stayed here, but from the exorbitant cost and the luggage, it was evident that staying here was less comfortable than staying at her place.
Ji Fanghuai only thought this to herself. When she returned to the room, Jiang Zhi was already awake, her face looking forlorn, probably thinking Ji Fanghuai had left.
“Fanghuai,” Jiang Zhi said with surprise upon seeing her.
“Have some congee,” Ji Fanghuai opened the takeaway container. The congee was quite good, well-prepared, and still warm.
Jiang Zhi sat quietly, waiting for Ji Fanghuai to feed her.
Ji Fanghuai started spoon-feeding her the congee. Midway through, she suddenly remembered that Jiang Zhi’s fever had broken and her limbs were fine. She shoved the bowl into Jiang Zhi’s hands, telling her to eat by herself.
Jiang Zhi: …
