After Losing My Memory, I Suddenly Had A Fiancée - Chapter 35
Ji Fanghuai was unprecedentedly nervous upon arriving home. Checking the time, it was already past six. She hadn’t told Jiang Zhi about her impromptu movie plan.
Jiang Zhi usually got off work at five, so she should be home by now.
Ji Fanghuai prepared herself mentally outside the door. After entering, she checked the living room and bedroom but found no trace of Jiang Zhi, feeling a subtle sense of disappointment.
Ji Fanghuai sat cross-legged on the sofa, holding the cat and spacing out.
Aunt Chu said, “Why hasn’t Miss Jiang returned yet?”
Ji Fanghuai echoed, “Yeah, why isn’t Jiang Zhi back yet? She’s usually home by now.”
She took out her phone, about to call, when the sound of the door lock turning was heard. Ji Fanghuai put Xixi down and went to the door in her slippers.
Jiang Zhi was changing her shoes in the entryway and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“You’re back a bit late today,” Ji Fanghuai said, feigning an air of indifference.
Jiang Zhi replied, “There was a car accident on Heping Road today, causing a traffic jam, so I got back a little late.”
Ji Fanghuai looked her up and down, asking with concern, “Are you alright?”
Jiang Zhi said, “It was someone else’s car accident, so of course I’m fine. Did you go out today?”
Ji Fanghuai asked, “Yes, how did you know?”
“You haven’t changed your clothes,” Jiang Zhi pointed to Ji Fanghuai’s sweater and fleece-lined trousers.
She dressed very casually at home, only paying attention to her appearance when going out. And since she was very sensitive to cold, she had to wear warm clothes when leaving the house. Following Jiang Zhi, Ji Fanghuai said, “I went to see Jin Lin’s new movie with Mianmian today.”
“You went to see her movie?” Jiang Zhi sounded somewhat subtle.
Ji Fanghuai recalled Lin Mianmian’s expression at the time being the same and began to wonder if she was abnormal. She explained, “I separate work from personal life; I judge by the matter, not the person.”
She couldn’t possibly stop watching a movie just because Jin Lin liked Jiang Zhi—it wasn’t some unacceptable scandal.
“Then I hope you judge by the person, not the matter,” Jiang Zhi said, looking down.
Ji Fanghuai was surprised, “You hope I dislike her?”
“She’s my friend, so of course I don’t want you to dislike her. But we are lovers. I hope you would be jealous, rather than acting so nonchalant,” Jiang Zhi said, unusually honest.
“But I wasn’t nonchalant. I thought of you even while watching the movie,” Ji Fanghuai blurted out, feeling a little embarrassed. “Anyway, I don’t care about you as little as you think. I’m already trying hard to have a good relationship.”
Jiang Zhi looked pleasantly surprised.
Ji Fanghuai’s tone suddenly shifted, leaving Jiang Zhi no room to speak: “How are you going to explain the fact that you lied to me?”
Jiang Zhi blinked unnaturally, her face calm, and she asked uncertainly, “I lied to you?”
“About you saying your company was small,” Ji Fanghuai repeated everything Lin Mianmian had told her.
Jiang Zhi said in a relaxed tone, “The profit from games is indeed very high, but developing a game takes a long time. Also, the company only achieved good results this year; there were many failed games before that didn’t become popular. Games rely on luck; they might blow up, or they might flop.”
Ji Fanghuai listened with a confused look, then said, “I understand.”
Jiang Zhi said, “In short, you don’t need to worry too much. You can do whatever you want with the coffee shop; I want you to be happy. I will always be your solid backup.”
Ji Fanghuai only nodded slightly.
She actually really wanted to run the coffee shop well, as it was her career, but she didn’t feel a sense of belonging there. She always felt that whether she managed it or not, the shop wouldn’t fail.
Because, just as Jiang Zhi said, with Jiang Zhi supporting it, perhaps the coffee shop was just for her amusement compared to Jiang Zhi’s game company.
“What are you spacing out about?” Jiang Zhi waved her fingers in front of Ji Fanghuai. Ji Fanghuai came back to her senses and said it was time to eat.
During dinner, Ji Fanghuai kept looking at Jiang Zhi from time to time. She wasn’t sure why; perhaps it was related to thinking about Jiang Zhi in the cinema.
She never had the habit of staring at Jiang Zhi before. Had one kiss changed that? And she didn’t even reject sticking out her tongue.
Holding this slightly scandalous thought, Ji Fanghuai became restless when they lay down on the same bed. Being drunk and blacking out was truly annoying.
She had done a naughty thing, but didn’t even remember the experience.
Jiang Zhi turned to the side, looking at Ji Fanghuai’s long, flowing hair, and said, “You are a bit different today.”
Ji Fanghuai asked, “How am I different?”
Jiang Zhi: “You’re very restless today.”
Ji Fanghuai said, “You can even tell that?”
“Mhm, because I’m restless too,” Jiang Zhi said flatly, staring at Ji Fanghuai’s small ear half-hidden by her hair.
Ji Fanghuai sensed her gaze, and her ears felt hot. She shifted uncomfortably to a different sleeping position, yet didn’t want to directly turn her back on Jiang Zhi. She felt Jiang Zhi’s breathing getting closer.
Ji Fanghuai’s first reaction was to close her eyes. Her eyes were faster than her thoughts; they were tightly shut when Jiang Zhi got close, her long eyelashes slightly trembling. However, Jiang Zhi only kissed her forehead.
A cool touch, a brief contact.
Ji Fanghuai had been kissed like this by Jiang Zhi before, but today it felt completely different. That difference became more pronounced when Jiang Zhi held her.
Ji Fanghuai’s mind was filled with random thoughts.
Jiang Zhi said, “Sleep.”
Ji Fanghuai: “Oh.”
“Didn’t you just finish watching Jin Lin’s movie?” Jiang Zhi suggested on Saturday when she was off. “If you are really obsessed with that character, you can come to the gathering with me.”
Ji Fanghuai didn’t have an ‘obsessed’ feeling; the character was simply beautiful, strong, and tragic. Since there was no CP accompaniment, it was just a character suitable for fans’ imagination.
She said, “You intentionally bringing me along, won’t that be cruel to Jin Lin?”
“This kind of thing just has to be cruel. She needs to face reality. We’ve been friends for so many years that we can’t cut ties completely, but I still need to state my position,” Jiang Zhi said somewhat mercilessly.
Ji Fanghuai couldn’t refute that.
The venue for this gathering was a bit different: it was at Jin Lin’s house, a detached villa with very strict security.
When they arrived, Xin Ling was already lying on the sofa, having taken a nap. She immediately said, “I’ve been waiting for you until the flowers withered.”
Jin Lin was not at all surprised that Ji Fanghuai had come.
To ease the awkwardness, Ji Fanghuai mentioned she had watched her movie, thought it was great, and was planning to go for a second viewing when she had time.
Jin Lin thought it was flattery and said, “There’s no need to go to such expense; it’s just a movie, treat it as entertainment.”
Ji Fanghuai asked, “Does Chen Cheng’s death have a deeper meaning?”
“Don’t over-interpret it. That question should be directed to the screenwriter and director. I’m just a minor role acting according to the director’s instructions,” Jin Lin couldn’t help but say a few more words. “Besides, some TV shows or movies deliberately use an open ending just to spark discussion. Maybe even the screenwriter and director don’t know what it means.”
“…” Ji Fanghuai fell silent and looked at Jiang Zhi.
Jiang Zhi agreed, saying, “It really is to generate discussion.”
Jin Lin quieted down. Xin Ling asked, “How is the company’s overseas market expansion going? Is it profitable?”
Jiang Zhi: “We’re expanding. This is a private gathering, no business talk.”
Xin Ling mumbled a couple of lines about good intentions going unrewarded, and then said, “Fanghuai, have you thought about franchising your coffee shop? I can join you, but you need to talk to Lin Mianmian.”
Ji Fanghuai was confused, “Talk about what?”
“To ask her to draw a character design for me again,” Xin Ling said dramatically. “Do you know why I don’t date? I’m almost thirty, but I’ve never been in a relationship.”
Ji Fanghuai saw Jiang Zhi was expressionless and Jin Lin was stifling a laugh, and she asked, “Were you hurt?”
Xin Ling said, “How could I be hurt if I’ve never dated?”
Jiang Zhi retorted, “Just say what you mean, stop beating around the bush.”
Xin Ling slowly said, “I don’t date because I have someone I like. I’ve liked her for ten whole years, and she has no idea about my feelings.”
Ji Fanghuai looked at Jiang Zhi in surprise. Jin Lin silently looked at Jiang Zhi. Jiang Zhi sat there nonchalantly.
Xin Ling dropped a bomb, saying, “I like paper characters. Only the two-dimensional world can comfort my heart. No one in this world is perfect except for paper characters. So, please ask Great Little Lin to draw another character design for me.”
“…” Ji Fanghuai really couldn’t imagine such deep affection for a paper character and said, “I’ll tell her.”
The gathering was actually very simple: a group of friends gathering to eat hotpot, which was warm and good for bonding. It was completely different from the tense atmosphere Ji Fanghuai had imagined.
When Jiang Zhi went to the restroom, Xin Ling suddenly leaned in and asked, “How are you two spending Christmas?”
Ji Fanghuai hadn’t even realized it was nearly Christmas. She thought for a moment and said, “Lying at home, or going out if it snows.”
Xin Ling: “No romance at all.”
“Why bother with romance in the cold weather?” Ji Fanghuai mumbled softly. Jin Lin suddenly said, “Jiang Zhi has another property. If it snows, that place has the best view.”
Ji Fanghuai said, “I know she does.”
Jin Lin said, as if provoking her, “But have you ever been there?”
Ji Fanghuai suddenly sounded weak, “No.”
Jin Lin said, “Dating Jiang Zhi is like opening a blind box; you never know what the next one will be.”
Xin Ling poked her arm, saying, “What nonsense are you talking about?”
Jin Lin said carelessly, “Just speaking the truth.”
Ji Fanghuai found it inexplicable. It wasn’t like online dating and opening a blind box. With Jiang Zhi’s face, figure, character, and wealth, she couldn’t possibly be at a disadvantage.
However, her curiosity was piqued.
When leaving Jin Lin’s house, Ji Fanghuai said, “I want to see your old house.”
Jiang Zhi was a little surprised, “It’s a bit far.”
Ji Fanghuai promised, “My motion sickness technique is quite good now. I just want to take a look.”
Jiang Zhi drove with her to the villa area.
This property was a detached villa. The outdoor design was mainly green plants, while the interior style was completely different from their current home—it was typical Nordic minimalist, commonly known as ‘sex-neutral’ style.
After looking around, Ji Fanghuai had only one thought and said, “I think the layout here is very comfortable. This place feels more like your style. The style of the place we live in is strange; I always feel like you’re catering to my preferences.”
She hadn’t felt this way before, but now, comparing the two styles of decor, the feeling was getting stronger.
Jiang Zhi frowned and asked, “You don’t like it?”
Ji Fanghuai said, “I like it, but I prefer a style that includes mutual accommodation, not just one-sided deference.”
Jiang Zhi lowered her eyes, lost in thought.
The area was large but spotless, as if someone had been living there all along. Jiang Zhi said, “Someone cleans it regularly.”
Ji Fanghuai thought to herself that having so much property meant a lot of management fees. The profit of her coffee shop was simply negligible compared to Jiang Zhi’s wealth.
With Jiang Zhi’s permission, Ji Fanghuai entered her bedroom. With a huge floor-to-ceiling window and ‘sex-neutral’ style bedding, Ji Fanghuai and Jiang Zhi lay down on the large bed together, feeling completely soft and wanting to doze off.
Then she noticed Jiang Zhi staring intensely at her.
Ji Fanghuai’s sleepiness instantly vanished. She still preferred Jiang Zhi when she was lying weakly in bed and said, “You… your stomach isn’t good, don’t mess around.”
Jiang Zhi said seriously, “But my kidneys are very good.”
