- Chapter 27 - Touching Lightly (Dragonfly Skimming the Water)
Jiang Zhi explained in a popularized manner: “The reasons why people faint at the sight of blood are different. The doctor said that I faint because subconsciously I feel blood is dangerous; I know that blood will put me in danger. But this (referring to menstruation) doesn’t count; it happens once a month, and I’ve gradually gotten used to it.”
“Have you been afraid of blood since childhood?” Ji Fanghuai asked curiously.
“No. I told you before that my mother died of depression, but she actually committed suicide. The bathtub was full of her blood at the time, and I…” As Jiang Zhi spoke, her face became paler and paler.
“Are you okay?” Ji Fanghuai supported her.
In fact, most people who die from depression commit suicide.
Jiang Zhi took the opportunity to hug Ji Fanghuai and said: “I was 10 years old then. She had long given up on this world. The only reason she held on was for me. I knew all this. I resented her for leaving me all alone, but then I felt that I was the one dragging her down.”
“That’s all in the past. Your mother must have wanted you to live well, and you are living well now, so she must be very happy.” Ji Fanghuai wasn’t good at comforting people and could only offer these useless platitudes.
But she had a feeling of being needed.
Jiang Zhi just held her without saying a word. Ji Fanghuai tried to change the subject and asked, “Do you have period pain?”
She felt truly guilty. She didn’t even know when Jiang Zhi’s period was, or if she suffered from pain.
“What would you do if I did?” Jiang Zhi asked somewhat weakly.
Ji Fanghuai thought for a moment and asked, “What did I use to do?”
“I don’t have pain, just an uncomfortable feeling of a sore back and a bloated abdomen. You used to be my human hot water bottle and let me hold you obediently,” Jiang Zhi whispered into Ji Fanghuai’s ear.
Ji Fanghuai shivered and said, “You should just drink more hot water.”
Jiang Zhi lowered her eyes. Ji Fanghuai felt a pang of sympathy for her.
Perhaps her amnesia wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, but forgetting the good memories along with the bad seemed absurd.
After that, Jiang Zhi went abroad for a week for business.
Unlike the last time Jiang Zhi went to her grandmother’s house, Ji Fanghuai was listless and couldn’t find interest in anything.
Lin Mianmian was still drawing at Xin Ling’s place. She didn’t have to manage the coffee shop, which was doing just fine, and Aunt Chu was at home.
She felt superfluous, like she didn’t belong anywhere.
It was as if she had returned to the time when she first came to this family.
Ji Fanghuai indulged herself, staying in bed every day.
She now had only one goal: to recover her memory; otherwise, everything else felt futile. But she didn’t know where to start, so she could only hope that her memory would return on its own.
Jiang Zhi called and said that if she was really bored, she could go out with Xin Ling. Ji Fanghuai thought it was just a casual remark, but then Xin Ling actually came and asked, “Want to go out?”
“With you?” Ji Fanghuai looked at Xin Ling with some uncertainty. She remembered the assistant saying that Xin Ling liked extreme sports, and she was afraid her old injury would flare up before she even started having fun.
Xin Ling said, “I don’t go courting death every day. There’s a comic convention at Xinfang Plaza tomorrow, and the great Lin Lin (Lin Mianmian) is going too. You two know each other, right? You can keep each other company.”
Ji Fanghuai agreed after hearing that Lin Mianmian would also be there.
The next day, Ji Fanghuai was picked up by Xin Ling. Lin Mianmian was indeed there and looked much livelier. After they greeted each other, Lin Mianmian asked why she decided to go to the comic convention.
Ji Fanghuai said, “I came because I heard you were coming. It’s so boring at home anyway.”
Lin Mianmian said, “I also only came because I heard you were coming. Otherwise, I’d want to stay in bed.”
Ji Fanghuai: “…”
Were they both tricked by Xin Ling?
“Do you want to put on makeup? Do you want to dress up? Do you have any favorite anime characters?” Xin Ling was completely unashamed. “I have outfits here—Hanfu, Lolita—whatever you like.”
Ji Fanghuai quickly waved her hand: “I just want to wear a wig.”
She wanted to see what she looked like with long hair.
Lin Mianmian said, “I’m fine just as I am.”
Xin Ling said helplessly, “Fine.”
Xin Ling had a dedicated makeup artist. After being dressed and made up, Ji Fanghuai barely recognized herself. Xin Ling was snapping photos of her nearby.
“What are you doing?” Ji Fanghuai felt a bit uncomfortable.
Xin Ling said, “Reporting in to Jiang Zhi.”
Ji Fanghuai felt a little nervous. After all, she was different now than before. The wig was of good quality and didn’t look fake at all, though it felt a bit tight on her head.
Ji Fanghuai reminded her, “Show me before you send it.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll add ten levels of beauty filters to make sure you look beautiful and all-natural. Actually, it would be better if you sent it to her yourself.” Xin Ling started selecting photos. “This one, all-natural and no additives.”
Ji Fanghuai looked at the photo of herself with long hair, which resembled the woman in the bedroom photo, and was very satisfied.
Ji Fanghuai saw Lin Mianmian wearing a coat, but Xin Ling was in a short skirt, stockings, and high heels. She couldn’t help but ask with concern, “You’re wearing so little? It’s less than ten degrees Celsius today.”
“When going out to have fun, you naturally have to look good. Who goes out in a down jacket like you? By the way, it’s only November, why are you already wearing a down jacket?” Xin Ling asked with surprise.
Ji Fanghuai tightened her black down jacket and said, “I’m cold.”
She didn’t care much about what she wore.
The three of them rushed to the comic convention.
Lin Mianmian was more reserved, while Xin Ling was the most proactive, dragging Lin Mianmian along to take pictures. Xin Ling was very attractive, and many passersby wanted to take pictures with her.
Seeing that they were busy, Ji Fanghuai went outside to look at the merchandise.
She had watched quite a few anime shows, but in the end, she only bought a pair of keychains with anime characters because they were from the anime she had watched with Jiang Zhi.
Because it was genuinely too cold and the temperature difference was significant, Ji Fanghuai was so frozen that she kept sneezing (“A-choo”) while talking.
“You should have worn more,” Xin Ling felt bored after taking a few photos. “Otherwise, I won’t dare to take you out next time. Jiang Zhi will probably scold me.”
“It’s fine, I’ll just warm up when I get home.” Ji Fanghuai asked curiously, “Does Jiang Zhi often scold you?”
Xin Ling said fiercely, “She wouldn’t dare.”
Halfway through, Lin Mianmian had a family matter and went home first.
Ji Fanghuai also felt it wasn’t fun. On the way home, she chatted with Xin Ling and asked, “You’ve been good friends with Jiang Zhi for so many years, you must know how we used to get along. Can you tell me?”
Xin Ling raised an eyebrow: “Do you want to please her?”
Ji Fanghuai denied it: “Not exactly, I just want to quickly get my memories back.”
Xin Ling pondered thoughtfully: “Well, your former relationship pattern was quite simple. You liked to call her Jiejie (older sister), saying ‘Jiejie’ this and ‘Jiejie’ that, which gave me goosebumps. And you loved to act spoiled. Jiang Zhi was most afraid of you acting spoiled. Anyway, you were very clingy, like a plaster.”
“…” Ji Fanghuai didn’t know how much of that was true and how much was false, but she felt that liking to call Jiang Zhi Jiejie was probably true.
Because she subconsciously liked to call Jiang Zhi Jiejie even now, although Jiang Zhi didn’t seem to like it.
She settled for the next best thing and asked, “Do you know about Jiang Zhi’s family situation?”
“Didn’t I tell you before? After her father passed away, her mother remarried and took her along. Then her mother passed away too, and she lived with her stepfather and stepmother. Ugh, just ask Jiang Zhi about it yourself; I don’t know much.” Xin Ling closed her eyes and leaned back. “I’m sleepy. I’m going to sleep.”
How could Ji Fanghuai dare to ask Jiang Zhi? That would be rubbing salt in the wound. However, she didn’t dwell on not getting an answer.
When Ji Fanghuai got home, her sneezing became even more ridiculous; she practically couldn’t let go of the tissues.
Aunt Chu said, “It’s easy to catch a cold in this weather. We have medicine at home.”
Ji Fanghuai always avoided taking medicine if possible, and besides, Jiang Zhi wasn’t here, so no one would nag her.
She said, “It’s fine. I’ll be better after a good sleep.”
Ji Fanghuai took a shower and lay in bed scrolling on her phone, only to see news that an international flight returning from Country M had an accident and made an emergency landing.
Ji Fanghuai was frightened and quickly went to check on Jiang Zhi’s flight.
“Fanghuai.” Jiang Zhi’s pleasant voice came through.
Ji Fanghuai rubbed her nose, briefly mentioned the news she saw, and said, “I’m relieved you’re okay. I was just asking casually.”
Jiang Zhi’s voice was a bit low: “I originally planned to come back today, but the flight back home was delayed, so I’ll be back tomorrow.”
“Okay, be safe. I’m going to sleep now.” Ji Fanghuai didn’t want Jiang Zhi to find out she had a cold; she always felt unreliable when she was sick.
“Alright, good night.” Jiang Zhi hung up the phone and contemplated the message Xin Ling had sent her a few hours earlier.
“Ji Fanghuai asked me about your family again today. I didn’t say anything, so don’t blame me if something goes wrong. Remember to clean up the mess you made yourself.”
When Ji Fanghuai woke up the next day, her cold symptoms were much lighter, and she put even less thought into taking medicine.
Xixi, the fat cat, especially liked to jump around on her chest. Ji Fanghuai tried to shoo it away at first, but later simply ignored it.
Jiang Zhi returned to see a harmonious scene of a person and a cat coexisting. Hearing the movement, Ji Fanghuai picked Xixi up and put him down.
After only a week apart, she actually missed Jiang Zhi, but Ji Fanghuai’s attention was quickly drawn to something red on Jiang Zhi’s shoulder.
Ji Fanghuai said, “There’s a lipstick stain here…”
Jiang Zhi’s coat was white, making the stain very noticeable.
The smile on Jiang Zhi’s face instantly vanished. She looked down and said, “I came back with Jin Lin. She might have accidentally brushed against me.”
“You know she likes you, so why did you still come back with her?” Ji Fanghuai felt an inexplicable surge of anger.
She immediately regretted it, not having expected herself to say something like that. However, as Jiang Zhi’s fiancée, she felt she had the right to speak up.
Jiang Zhi explained: “Ever since I found out she had feelings for me, I’ve rarely met her alone; we usually meet as a trio. But this time, she was spotted by paparazzi right after leaving the airport and didn’t have time to get into her own car, so she rode back in mine. She twisted her ankle getting in, and I helped her, so it might have rubbed off then. I’ll definitely be careful next time.”
“Oh, you don’t need to explain so much to me. I was just asking, and a lipstick stain doesn’t look very good anyway.” Ji Fanghuai rambled, trying to cover her tracks.
She wanted to say she didn’t care, but if Jiang Zhi hadn’t explained, she probably would have stewed in silence.
Jiang Zhi seemed to understand her thoughts perfectly, then frowned and asked, “Do you have a cold?”
“Yeah.” Ji Fanghuai then realized her voice was muffled.
Jiang Zhi asked with concern, “Did you take any medicine?”
Ji Fanghuai shook her head: “No.”
Jiang Zhi asked again, “Did you take your temperature?”
Ji Fanghuai said, “37.8 [°C], that’s normal. Don’t worry.”
Jiang Zhi said seriously, “37.3 [°C] is normal. Drink some cold remedy powder first. If you’re not better, we’ll go to the hospital tomorrow.”
“It’s just a cold.” Before Ji Fanghuai could object, Jiang Zhi had already prepared the cold remedy.
Although the powder was sweet, it was oddly sweet. Ji Fanghuai drank it with a pained expression and felt utterly miserable.
Ji Fanghuai was sent to bed early. She woke up before midnight, and Jiang Zhi was still in the study.
Ji Fanghuai went to the bathroom, and her sleepiness was completely gone. She decided to go to the study to keep Jiang Zhi company and poured her a glass of water.
“Did you often work this late before?”
Jiang Zhi kept her eyes on the laptop and said, “Not often, but there’s been something else going on recently.”
Ji Fanghuai asked, “Not work-related?”
Jiang Zhi pursed her lips: “No.”
Ji Fanghuai stopped disturbing Jiang Zhi and sat opposite her, looking for a book to read. Suddenly, something flashed in her mind.
She excitedly walked around to Jiang Zhi’s side and said, “I feel like that scene just now was familiar. After this, I tell you to take care of yourself and rest early, and then you’ll pat my head. Is that right?”
Jiang Zhi’s eyes deepened: “Yes.”
“Does this count as me remembering something?”
Ji Fanghuai was incredibly excited, feeling that her efforts over the past few days were finally paying off, even if she had only recalled a small fragment.
“It counts, but the next step should be a kiss.”
As Jiang Zhi spoke, she gave Ji Fanghuai a light, fleeting kiss on the lips. Ji Fanghuai’s mind immediately went blank.
The tiny bit of memory she had just managed to recall vanished completely, all because Jiang Zhi had suddenly kissed her.
