After Losing My Memory, I Suddenly Had A Fiancée - Chapter 15
That phrase, “your mom,” sounded a bit like an insult. Ji Fanghuai was flustered and hurriedly explained, “I’m sorry, you know I didn’t mean it that way.”
Lin Mianmian waved her hand. “It’s fine, it’s fine, I know what you mean.”
Ji Fanghuai thought, if you knew, you wouldn’t have said something like ‘your mom is a gynecologist.’
She and Lin Mianmian stood awkwardly, each holding a cup of milk tea, faces flushed, completely unsure what to talk about next to escape the recent topic.
Times Square was near the café, just across a traffic light. Jiang Zhi drove over and arrived in less than five minutes.
When she found them, she saw Ji Fanghuai and Lin Mianmian standing opposite each other, absentmindedly sucking on their straws, both looking shy.
Jiang Zhi’s eyes were shadowed and unclear. She steadied herself and walked towards them.
The sound of high heels approached abruptly.
“Miss Jiang.” Lin Mianmian finally felt Jiang Zhi’s death stare this time. She quickly told Ji Fanghuai, “I have to go, I have something to do. You two keep shopping.”
Jiang Zhi nodded politely; her eyes fixed on Ji Fanghuai.
Ji Fanghuai’s mind was still stuck on Lin Mianmian’s phrase: “her mom is a gynecologist.”
What does her mom being a gynecologist have to do with me?
I don’t even have a sex life.
The more Ji Fanghuai thought about it, the warmer her forehead became, until Jiang Zhi reached out and placed her hand on Ji Fanghuai’s forehead, frowning as she asked, “Fanghuai?”
“I’m fine.” Ji Fanghuai snapped back to attention. She was grateful that Jiang Zhi had arrived so quickly, otherwise Lin Mianmian’s unintentional comment could have left them awkward for another ten minutes.
Jiang Zhi took the shopping bag from her hand, saying, “You only bought these things while you were at the mall?”
“I bought a new set of pajamas. I’m not used to the ones at home.” Ji Fanghuai still preferred this style of animal-themed pajamas; the ones at home were too sensual.
“They look very cute.” Jiang Zhi glanced at Ji Fanghuai’s hand hanging by her side, took it without warning, and said as they walked, “What else do you want to buy? I’ll accompany you.”
Her left hand was suddenly enveloped by a slightly cool palm. Ji Fanghuai paused, and seeing Jiang Zhi acting as if nothing had happened, she didn’t know what to say, but she secretly glanced at their clasped hands.
She didn’t know how to place her fingers, so they just rested neatly in Jiang Zhi’s palm.
Ji Fanghuai said, “Actually, there’s nothing special I want to buy. I have everything at home. I just thought it was boring staying in the store so I came out to look around. Oh, right, I want to buy a pair of Bluetooth headphones.”
Jiang Zhi accompanied her to buy the headphones.
Ji Fanghuai thought, Sure enough, women love to shop. Although Jiang Zhi had slowed her pace, Ji Fanghuai still had to look up to talk to her. Ji Fanghuai asked, “How tall are you?”
She always knew Jiang Zhi was tall, but Jiang Zhi was specifically wearing high heels today. Her white cinched-waist shirt paired with lotus root-colored trousers looked very casual. Since Ji Fanghuai had left the house in flats, the comparison made her look much shorter than Jiang Zhi.
Jiang Zhi stopped, patted the top of her head, and smiled, “A bit taller than you.”
Jiang Zhi seemed to enjoy talking to her in riddles, just like when she discussed their ages, always comparing them.
Ji Fanghuai had no choice but to ask, “Then how much taller?”
Jiang Zhi’s eyes were smiling as she said gently, “Six or seven centimeters. You’re not short, and I’m not that tall, it’s just right.”
One meter seventy-two?
Jiang Zhi had excellent body proportions, and being slender, her presence and demeanor were distinct from others. Ji Fanghuai was quite envious.
She began to look forward to her hair growing out.
The two of them walked around the mall for a bit longer. When passing a bridal shop, Ji Fanghuai subconsciously sped up, urging, “Let’s go home.”
Jiang Zhi glanced at the pure white wedding dress on the mannequin, seemingly imagining Ji Fanghuai wearing it, and said, “Okay, but we won’t go home yet.”
“If not home, where are we going?” Ji Fanghuai was confused, but Jiang Zhi only smiled, intending to give her a surprise.
If curiosity could kill the cat, Ji Fanghuai was that cat. She couldn’t hold onto doubt, but luckily, her confusion was quickly resolved.
Because she soon saw the promotional banner at a phone store, which read: August 25th: Last Day of the Summer Carnival Event.
August 25th… isn’t that my birthday?
Ji Fanghuai looked up at Jiang Zhi’s still calm face, wanting to ask but refraining.
So, Jiang Zhi called me early because she wanted to celebrate my birthday?
Is Jiang Zhi trying to give me a surprise?
Ji Fanghuai’s mind spun with possibilities.
She guessed Jiang Zhi must have booked a restaurant or something, otherwise she wouldn’t be dressed so casually.
Just as they left the mall, thunder and lightning flashed, and a torrential downpour began. The accumulated water on the road instantly formed small rivers.
Ji Fanghuai said, “It’s a downpour.”
Jiang Zhi pursed her lips tightly, staring wordlessly at the car she had just washed.
Ji Fanghuai comforted her, “It’s fine.”
Jiang Zhi seemed a little unhappy.
Ji Fanghuai guessed that perhaps the restaurant was special and said, “This month is prone to heavy rain. Staying home is just as good.”
Jiang Zhi was surprised. “You knew?”
Ji Fanghuai nodded. “Mhm, today is my birthday. Did you book a restaurant?”
“Yes.” Jiang Zhi had originally wanted to give Ji Fanghuai a surprise, and being exposed now made her a bit dejected, especially since the restaurant she booked was outdoors.
When they got home, Aunt Chu was packing up, preparing to leave. Seeing them, she asked, “Didn’t you say you weren’t eating at home today? Oh, I’m confused. It’s pouring rain outside. It only just stopped.”
Jiang Zhi said, “Today is Fanghuai’s birthday.”
“Happy birthday,” Aunt Chu said with a beaming smile.
Ji Fanghuai replied, “Thank you, Aunt Chu.”
Aunt Chu prepared a lavish meal again. After dinner, Jiang Zhi brought out a cake she had bought, but felt unhappy because it wasn’t custom-made.
After lighting the candles, Jiang Zhi regained her good mood and smiled, saying, “Fanghuai, happy birthday.”
“Happy birthday.” Ji Fanghuai sat formally across from Jiang Zhi, solemnly blew out the candles, and closed her eyes to make a wish.
“What did you wish for?” Jiang Zhi watched Ji Fanghuai the whole time, never taking her eyes off her.
“To regain my memory soon.” This was Ji Fanghuai’s greatest wish, otherwise she always felt guilty facing Jiang Zhi.
Jiang Zhi was slightly disappointed but smiled softly, lowering her eyes. “It will definitely come true.”
Ji Fanghuai was in a good mood. While cutting the cake, she asked, “When is your birthday?”
She wanted to prepare a gift, as a return favor.
“Next June.” Jiang Zhi’s expression was indifferent, seemingly not very interested in her own birthday.
“June? That was not long ago.” Ji Fanghuai remembered she was hit around June.
“It wasn’t long ago.” Jiang Zhi did not want to dwell on her birthday, she just sat and waited for the cake.
She didn’t like cream, but she ate every bit of the cake Ji Fanghuai handed her.
Ji Fanghuai was surprised. “Why are you eating so fast? This cake has too much cream. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to force yourself.”
“It’s only once a year,” Jiang Zhi said dismissively, then watched Ji Fanghuai eat in small bites, like a little hamster.
Birthday cake is just for a taste.
Ji Fanghuai had just eaten dinner and couldn’t finish the cake, so she played with the fruit on the cream.
It was different from the lively birthday she had imagined, yet she liked this moment of tranquility.
After cleaning up the cake, Jiang Zhi took out an exquisitely crafted box. Inside lay a pair of white gold rings.
“Since you’ve forgotten, let’s consider this a birthday gift. Should I put it back on you?”
Ji Fanghuai stared blankly at the rings—the engagement rings she had found in the bedroom.
She hesitated for a moment, then said, “Mhm.”
Ji Fanghuai extended her left hand, feeling a bit uneasy, as if wearing it would change something. Just then, the phone in her pocket vibrated suddenly.
It was Lin Mianmian’s call.
“My phone died while I was hiding from the rain near the mall earlier. Have you two gone back?”
“Yes, we’re back. Sorry, I have something going on right now, talk later.” After Ji Fanghuai hung up, she found Jiang Zhi still holding the ring, her eyes misty, making it hard to tell if she was happy or not.
She held out her left hand again and said, “Sorry, Mianmian was worried we hadn’t made it home yet.”
“It’s fine.” Jiang Zhi gently put the ring on her finger.
The size was just right.
The ring on her middle finger felt cold, and Ji Fanghuai shivered.
She felt like this ring was a warning, signaling that she and Jiang Zhi were now bound, and the next step would be marriage.
Although she had told Jiang Zhi they shouldn’t rush into marriage, it didn’t mean they would never marry.
Ji Fanghuai suddenly felt nervous, a tension that spread from her heart to her limbs.
Jiang Zhi explained, “This is our engagement ring.”
Ji Fanghuai said, “Mhm, I know.”
Jiang Zhi didn’t press her on how she knew, only staring at Ji Fanghuai, then saying, “Are you nervous?”
“No.” Ji Fanghuai shook her head repeatedly, unwilling to admit she was nervous.
Jiang Zhi took in her reaction, leaned over, and approached her ear, chuckling softly, “Don’t be nervous, I won’t eat you.”
Ji Fanghuai was very sure Jiang Zhi was lying. From the moment the ring slipped onto her finger, Jiang Zhi’s gaze was like fire, as if it wanted to burn her.
As Ji Fanghuai felt uneasy, Jiang Zhi’s breath was swirling around her ear, slowly moving to her eyes.
She knew what was about to happen and was so tense she wished she could twist herself into a pretzel.
A shadow slowly covered her view. Jiang Zhi’s face was very close, and Ji Fanghuai’s body froze in place.
“Fanghuai.” Jiang Zhi’s voice was slightly husky at this moment, the playful lilt at the end was extremely seductive, as if she couldn’t wait any longer.
“Mhm…” Ji Fanghuai didn’t have time to say another word before her lips were gently enclosed, and Jiang Zhi’s unique scent completely wrapped around her, making her unable to move.
Ji Fanghuai could even feel the lingering strawberry cake flavor on Jiang Zhi’s lips.
