- Chapter 6 - Friends
Fang Qingying knew exactly who Director Liu was referring to as “President Yun.” After all, the original owner of this body had only joined the drama because of his investment.
Otherwise, with the original owner’s temperament, why would she ever step into an unfamiliar field?
The original owner’s love-struck brain was truly invincible.
She had no talent for acting. In the entertainment industry, the original owner had been neither popular nor obscure just a few minor ads and a handful of fans who liked her looks, nothing more.
Director Liu seemed to sense Fang Qingying’s unease. He turned to her with a cheerful smile and asked, “Xiao Fang, are you excited?”
Having seen the tabloid gossip, he naturally understood the impact the name “Yun Yifan” had on Fang Qingying.
Originally, he had planned to keep her away to avoid any negative impressions on the investor. But now? Seeing how Fang Qingying seemed like a completely different person, Director Liu felt there was no need for such precautions.
Even if he didn’t trust Fang Qingying, he could at least trust Gu Shengxiao.
Unseen by the others, Gu Shengxiao’s expression darkened. Especially after Director Liu’s remark, her first instinct was to glance at Fang Qingying.
Fang Qingying merely shrugged and joked, “Director Liu, don’t tease me. Why would I be excited? Shouldn’t you be the happy one, now that the investor’s here?”
The female lead had just arrived on set, and the male lead appeared right on cue such a blatant coincidence it was almost outrageous.
Pitifully, her grand ambition as a cannon-fodder supporting character to stay far away from the male lead had died before it could even take its first step.
“Right, right, I should be the happy one,” Director Liu echoed, leading the group inside.
The crew members sat scattered in pairs under the scorching summer sun, the filming location radiating heat. It was break time, and everyone seemed lethargic.
Yu Lu took out her phone and made a call. Soon, seven or eight bodyguards arrived carrying boxes of supplies.
With the main cast, crew, and extras combined, the set had nearly three hundred people.
Yu Lu instructed the bodyguards to distribute the cooling watermelons and chilled drinks, smiling warmly as she said, “Please take good care of our Shengxiao.”
Bringing gifts for the crew on the first day was an unspoken tradition, one the original owner hadn’t known about.
Though Shen Lixie had prepared everything perfectly for her, it couldn’t outweigh the original owner’s self-sabotaging behavior that ruined her own reputation.
The crew members thanked them as they received the treats, then retreated to shady spots to rest.
“Xiao Dan! Come here and take Shengxiao to her dressing room. See if there’s anything that needs adjusting,” Director Liu called out to a young woman.
Xiao Dan was a vibrant girl with a high ponytail that swayed adorably as she walked.
Hearing Director Liu’s summons, she hurried over, nodding eagerly to show she understood.
But the moment she looked up at Gu Shengxiao, she froze like a bee mesmerized by a flower.
“G-Gu… Gu, the award-winning actress! Hello, I’m your fan!” Xiao Dan stammered before suddenly bowing at a perfect ninety-degree angle. “C-Can I have your autograph?”
Raising her head again, she stared at Gu Shengxiao with sparkling eyes, bright as stars in the night sky.
“Sure.” Gu Shengxiao gave a slight nod and extended her hand toward Xiao Dan. “Where should I sign?”
Xiao Dan, overwhelmed by this sudden stroke of luck, felt dizzy with excitement. She quickly pulled out a notebook and pen from her small backpack and handed them to Gu Shengxiao.
Director Liu, observing this, sternly reprimanded Xiao Dan, “You’re on work hours right now. How can you be handling personal matters?”
Xiao Dan shivered slightly, tucked away the autograph, and hurriedly said to Gu Shengxiao, “Ms. Gu, let me take you to the dressing room!”
Gu Shengxiao nodded. “Thank you.”
Xiao Dan playfully stuck out her tongue and strode off toward the dressing room.
Watching this unfold, Director Liu shook his head helplessly and said, “That girl has been spoiled by my wife. I apologize on her behalf.”
Gu Shengxiao smiled faintly. “Director Liu, you’re being too serious. Meeting a fan who likes me is an honor.”
“Ah, it’s just because you’re so good-natured, Shengxiao,” Director Liu replied, visibly relaxing.
Gu Shengxiao nodded at Director Liu before turning to Fang Qingying, who seemed lost in thought, and asked, “Xiao Ying, would you like to come to the dressing room with me?”
From the moment she entered the set, Fang Qingying had been listless, frequently glancing around as if searching for something.
Fang Qingying snapped out of her daze and feigned composure. “Sure.”
The male lead probably wouldn’t coincidentally appear on the way to the dressing room, right?
She stole a glance at Director Liu’s reaction. Seeing how unhurried he was, the investor likely hadn’t arrived yet.
After all, if the investor had come to the set while the crew was still on break, wouldn’t Director Liu, as the director, be accompanying them?
Gu Shengxiao took the initiative to grasp Fang Qingying’s hand and led her after Xiao Dan.
Her hand was slightly larger than Fang Qingying’s, just enough to envelop it comfortably.
Fang Qingying felt a bit awkward and tried to pull her hand back, but after a few attempts, she realized Gu Shengxiao’s grip was firm, steady without being painful.
Upon arriving at the dressing room, Fang Qingying couldn’t help but notice how well the female lead was treated. Compared to the shared dressing rooms she had been in before, where three or four people squeezed in with communal makeup artists, Gu Shengxiao had a private space all to herself, complete with her own dedicated makeup and styling team. The luxury was undeniable.
After Xiao Dan finished introducing the dressing room to Gu Shengxiao, her gaze inadvertently fell on their still-clasped hands.
Curious, she asked, “Ms. Gu and Qingying-jie, are you two good friends?”
Before Fang Qingying could respond, Gu Shengxiao answered first, “Yes, we’re good friends.”
As she said this, she looked directly at Fang Qingying, as if waiting for her confirmation.
“Right, Xiao Xiao and I are good friends.” Good friends who’ve only known each other for a few hours.
Fang Qingying silently added in her heart.
“Wow! It’s true that beautiful people befriend other beautiful people!” Xiao Dan propped her chin on her hands, her voice brimming with admiration. “I saw Qingying-jie’s commercials before you’re seriously, seriously stunning~”
“Thank you for the compliment,” Fang Qingying replied politely.
“Qingying-jie! May I have your autograph too?” Xiao Dan swiftly pulled out her notebook and pen again, flipping to the page where Gu Shengxiao had just signed.
Gu Shengxiao’s signature was elegant, bold and fluid, full of personality.
It occupied only a third of the page, leaving ample space for another signature.
Xiao Dan looked at the page she had flipped to and awkwardly stuck out her tongue, saying, “Qingying-jie, can you sign here?”
“Why?” Fang Qingying asked, holding a pen with a puzzled expression.
“I want… Gu Yinghou’s and Qingying-jie’s signatures to be together,” Xiao Dan replied softly, her head lowered.
Generally, many celebrities dislike having their signatures next to others’, as they might feel it shows disrespect.
But Xiao Dan couldn’t help but feel thrilled seeing the way Fang Qingying and Gu Shengxiao held hands, and how Gu Shengxiao’s eyes subtly brightened whenever she spoke while looking at Fang Qingying.
Beautiful people standing together made the sight even more pleasing.
“Sure,” Fang Qingying didn’t particularly care where her name was signed. She took the notebook and began writing.
When Gu Shengxiao saw her name appear on the same page as Fang Qingying’s, her eyes darkened like the night, and her breathing grew slightly uneven.
“Thank you, Qingying-jie and Gu Yinghou!” Xiao Dan bowed gratefully after seeing the signatures in her notebook.
Then she skipped away happily, like a child who had just won the lottery.
Fang Qingying didn’t quite understand what Xiao Dan was so happy about, but being asked for a signature out of the blue wasn’t a bad feeling, it reminded her of the joy she felt when her manga was published and she held signing events.
If possible, Fang Qingying would rather return to her old profession and be a proper mangaka.
In the blink of an eye, the break was over. Gu Shengxiao had to prepare for makeup and filming, while Fang Qingying happily went to find Director Liu.
Hehe, Director Liu had promised she could sit and observe the acting up close. That’s what Fang Qingying was thinking.
“Xiao Fang, come here, come here. Take a good look at Gu Yinghou’s acting, it’ll definitely blow you away,” Director Liu spotted Fang Qingying immediately and waved her over.
Fang Qingying nodded obediently, pulling up a small stool to sit and watch Gu Shengxiao’s performance on the monitor without blinking.
The female lead truly lived up to her title. Fang Qingying felt so immersed that it was as if the character was no longer just a fictional figure but a living, breathing person.
“Xiao Fang, what did you learn?” Director Liu suddenly asked.
Fang Qingying scratched her head awkwardly. “I just felt like I could empathize…”
As for anything else, she didn’t really pick up on much.
Especially when she imagined herself wearing a costume and acting alongside them, it made her a little shy.
Director Liu fell silent for a moment before patting Fang Qingying’s shoulder approvingly. “You’ve improved.”
At least she wasn’t calling their performance nonsense anymore.
Fang Qingying: “???”
Why was Director Liu so pleased? What kind of impression had the original owner left on him?
“Kid, do you have a lot of questions?”
That pretty much summed up Fang Qingying’s current state.
Ignoring her dazed expression, Director Liu continued filming the next scenes.
Gu Shengxiao’s acting skills were widely recognized, and she excelled at guiding her scene partners, so most takes were done in one go.
By 6 p.m., Director Liu suddenly stood up and announced, “Tonight at 7, there’s a dinner at the Grand Feast Hotel, everyone’s invited!”
“Who’s hosting?”
“The investors.”
Fang Qingying: “…” She’d been so engrossed in watching that she’d forgotten about the investors.
“Can I skip it?”
She was just tagging along today, so it shouldn’t be a big deal if she didn’t go, right?
But before Liu Dao could speak, she heard a tender child’s voice ring out beside her ear.
