- Chapter 5 - Female Protagonist
“Huh? What’s your name, miss?” Fang Qingying was internally panicking, and it showed just as much on the surface.
Her luck was truly something, on her second day transmigrating into this novel, she had already run into the female lead, gotten into her car, and even added her on WeChat.
Thinking about how the original host had struggled for so long without even getting the male lead’s WeChat, it was honestly a bit tragic.
“Gu Shengxiao,” Gu Shengxiao repeated her name, noticing that Fang Qingying still looked utterly disbelieving. She lowered her head and murmured, “Xiao Ying, do you not like me?”
Fang Qingying instinctively took half a step back. Feeling the faintly accusatory gaze on her, she furrowed her delicate brows, a flicker of panic flashing in her eyes as she hurriedly explained, “No, no, it’s not that I don’t like you.”
She just hadn’t expected her luck to be this ridiculously good. Why did the girl she liked have to be the female lead?
Didn’t that mean she’d have to compete with the male lead for this beautiful girl?
In other words, her plan to stay away from the male lead was already doomed!
“Xiao Ying, can I call you that?” Gu Shengxiao tilted her head, flashing a sweet smile.
She could switch between cool and adorable effortlessly, and her voice had a particularly commanding charm. How could Fang Qingying possibly refuse?
She nodded eagerly. “Of course you can!”
Gu Shengxiao pressed her advantage. “Then, can you call me Xiao Xiao?”
Fang Qingying nodded again. “Okay.”
Beside them, Yu Lu watched Fang Qingying like she was looking at a little fool, unable to resist casting a pitying glance. How tragic, once this woman set her sights on someone, there was no escape.
As they neared their destination, Yu Lu turned around and interjected, “Miss Fang, where were you planning to go?”
“I was originally heading home. If it’s not too much trouble, could you drop me off?” Fang Qingying awkwardly twirled a lock of her long hair between her fingers, the contrast of her pale fingertips against the dark strands forming a picturesque scene, giving off an air of quiet elegance.
“If you’re not in a hurry, Xiao Ying, would you like to watch me film?” Gu Shengxiao cut in before Yu Lu could respond, as if afraid the other woman would ruin her plans.
“I guess it’s fine?” Fang Qingying hesitated, glancing at her phone. Shen Lixie hadn’t called her even once by now, so it should be okay, right?
Besides, she wanted to see how the female lead acted. Since she had a drama to film herself soon, it wouldn’t hurt to learn a thing or two.
“Then, is that alright?” Gu Shengxiao smiled at her, waiting for Fang Qingying’s answer.
Dazzled by that sudden smile, Fang Qingying grinned back without restraint and nodded. “Sure.”
The female lead smiled at her again, ugh, she was done for.
From what she’d read in the original novel, Fang Qingying had always thought the female lead was the aloof type, only showing her cute, girlish side around the male lead.
But now, here she was, receiving the same treatment meant for the male lead. It felt absolutely amazing. The female lead’s contrasting charm was something she totally adored.
Yu Lu shook her head and instructed the driver to pull up at the studio entrance to let them out.
Once the car stopped, Gu Shengxiao stepped out first and walked around to Fang Qingying’s side, opening the door for her.
Staring at the delicate hand extended toward her, Fang Qingying unconsciously swallowed, then gingerly placed her own hand in Gu Shengxiao’s.
The warmth beneath her palm made her fingers curl slightly. Just as she was about to pull away, Gu Shengxiao’s hand closed around hers.
Her hand exerted a slight force, and Fang Qingying felt her entire body lift lightly. Before she could gather her thoughts, she found herself standing outside, pressed unusually close to Gu Shengxiao.
Fang Qingying awkwardly averted her gaze downward, catching another glimpse of those delicate, alluring collarbones and the undulating curves beneath.
Unconsciously, she swallowed hard, the tips of her ears hidden beneath her dark hair burning crimson. This girl’s figure is absolutely perfect~
So enviable!
“Pfft, Xiao Ying seems to zone out a lot?” Gu Shengxiao lowered her eyes to look at the crown of her head, unable to resist covering her mouth with a light chuckle. “Am I not attractive enough to you? Is that why you keep spacing out?”
As she spoke, Gu Shengxiao leaned in closer to study her.
Faced with that magnified visage flawless, without a single visible pore, even the faintest hint of fine down on her cheeks discernible, Fang Qingying was so “startled” she could barely form coherent words.
She shook her head, stammering in response, “N-no, that’s not it.”
It was precisely because the attraction was too overwhelming that she was so flustered.
“Oh?” Gu Shengxiao raised a skeptical brow.
“Y-yes! I’m not lying, Xiao Xiao is just too beautiful, I was mesmerized!” Fang Qingying nodded vigorously, like a pestle pounding garlic, even emphasizing her point with three repetitions of “too.”
“Pfft, Xiao Ying is just too adorable.” Gu Shengxiao couldn’t hold back her laughter at Fang Qingying’s words, reaching out to affectionately ruffle her hair.
Just as cute as she was in childhood so much so that Gu Shengxiao wanted to hide her away, unwilling to let anyone else see her.
“Not at all.” Fang Qingying lowered her head bashfully, naturally leaning into Gu Shengxiao’s touch as if they were old friends who had known each other for years.
Yu Lu couldn’t bear to watch their interaction any longer and feigned a cough. “Ahem, Shengxiao, Director Liu is waiting.”
Before Gu Shengxiao could respond, Fang Qingying piped up first, “Sister Lulu, if your throat’s bothering you, I recommend Jin Kanzhi lozenges!”
Compared to Yu Lu’s initial reserve, Fang Qingying’s ease was far more practiced.
Just look at her without even formally introducing herself, she addressed Yu Lu with the sweetest “Sister Lulu,” paired with an expression of pure innocence. Who could bear to be angry at such a little sweetheart?
Under Fang Qingying’s concerned gaze, Yu Lu swallowed whatever she had been about to say, leaving only a meek, “I’m fine.”
“Sister Lulu is perfectly healthy, no need to worry, Xiao Ying.” Gu Shengxiao curved her eyes into crescents as she glanced at Yu Lu, even mimicking her tone as she echoed the address.
The sheer acidity in her voice made Yu Lu shudder, the sourness so potent it was almost tear-inducing.
“Yeah, I’m in great health,” Yu Lu played along with Gu Shengxiao’s implication while subtly tugging at her sleeve and whispering, “Shengxiao, Director Liu is here.”
The man Yu Lu referred to as “Director Liu” was a middle-aged man with black-framed glasses, resembling an intellectual straight out of the last century.
But that wasn’t what caught Fang Qingying’s attention. This Director Liu happened to be the director of the only TV series she was currently working on.
The original owner of her body had played a minor role akin to the third female lead, but her acting was notoriously terrible. During filming, Director Liu had roared like an angry lion every single day.
As a result, Fang Qingying now reflexively wanted to apologize the moment she saw him.
“Direct”, Fang Qingying had barely opened her mouth when Director Liu spotted her.
“Xiao Fang? Feeling better now? Do you still need more rest?” Director Liu asked Fang Qingying with concern, as if she were his own child.
In reality, Director Liu knew that Fang Qingying had been looking for trouble with the female lead ever since joining the crew. That’s why he thought it best not to let Fang Qingying know that Gu Shengxiao was the female lead this time.
Ideally, he could convince Fang Qingying to go back and “rest” again, sparing himself the urge to yell at her every time he saw her.
Fang Qingying: “???”
Had Director Liu taken the wrong medicine? Why was he suddenly so concerned about her?
She didn’t immediately grasp the meaning behind his words, so Director Liu spoke again, calmly, “Xiao Fang? Li Xie mentioned you just got out of the hospital and need rest. How many days off do you think would be appropriate?”
At this point, Director Liu might as well have outright said he wanted Fang Qingying to take a permanent vacation. As for whether it would delay filming?
Of course not they could just cut her scenes. Fang Qingying had already shot most of her parts anyway. The rest of the production could proceed smoothly without her.
“Director Liu, I get the feeling you really want to kick me out?” Fang Qingying raised an eyebrow, testing the waters.
The original owner’s reputation must have been truly awful if even the director couldn’t stand the sight of her. If this kept up, the original owner might be “forced” out of the entertainment industry.
Though Fang Qingying wasn’t particularly fond of acting, she preferred drawing manga, there was a big difference between leaving the industry voluntarily and being pushed out due to circumstances.
“Of course not, you’re overthinking it,” Director Liu denied outright, wiping sweat from his forehead. “I’m just worried about you.”
He wasn’t blatantly trying to drive Fang Qingying away, he just wanted to give her a break. After all, not everyone got such special treatment.
“Director Liu, Xiao Ying came with me today, so could you let her stay?” Gu Shengxiao stepped slightly to the side, subtly shielding Fang Qingying behind her as if standing up for her.
Fang Qingying was deeply moved. Sniffle~ How kind of this big sister! No wonder she was the female lead in the original novel. Even a cannon-fodder antagonist like her was starting to fall for her.
The thought of snatching the female lead from the male protagonist snowballed in her mind, growing bigger and bigger.
“O-of course,” Director Liu stammered awkwardly, wiping his sweat as he agreed to Gu Shengxiao’s request.
Watching the two of them interact, they didn’t seem like enemies at all. Could someone in the crew have been slandering Fang Qingying?
At this realization, Director Liu felt a pang of guilt for misjudging Fang Qingying. He looked at her remorsefully and said, “Xiao Fang, come over here later and watch how Shengxiao performs. You can learn from her.”
The monitor in front of the director was something every actor wanted to peek at, it showed all their performances, allowing them to spot their flaws more clearly.
Director Liu, feeling guilty for misjudging the young actress for so long, decided to make it up to her by giving her some guidance. Fang Qingying still had a few scenes left, and every bit of improvement counted. He couldn’t let one bad apple spoil the whole production.
“Thank you, Director Liu.”
Fang Qingying bowed deeply at a 90-degree angle, startling Director Liu into taking a step back.
“You’re too earnest, kid,” Director Liu said, rubbing his nose to change the subject. “Let’s head into the set. There’s an investor visiting today.”
“Who’s the investor Director Liu mentioned?” she asked casually.
“Who else could it be but President Yun?”
Fang Qingying froze, thinking to herself, this is bad.
