- Chapter 24 - Zero Points
“Truth or Dare?” Fang Qingying responded curiously to System 888’s question.
This system actually knows how to play Truth or Dare? It’s quite up-to-date!
“But what does this have to do with your punishment tasks?” Fang Qingying asked, puzzled.
No matter how she thought about it, these two things seemed completely unrelated.
888 explained in a nostalgic tone: [Someone said my punishment tasks weren’t varied enough, so they recommended I look up Truth or Dare punishments to add more.]
Fang Qingying: “What about the ‘Truth’ part?”
A system shouldn’t play favorites! If you’re taking the ‘Dare,’ how can you leave out ‘Truth’?
888: [We don’t need ‘Truth.’ That person said the concept of ‘Truth’ has loopholes. As long as the speaker genuinely believes what they’re saying is true, then it counts as truth.]
“That actually sounds logically consistent?” Fang Qingying scratched her head, carefully considering this twisted logic and realizing there was no flaw to pick at.
She grew curious about who this mysterious person was. “Who is she?”
[You’ll find out eventually.]
“Is she connected to me?”
[Mm, there’s a significant connection.]
“Can’t you just tell me? Or at least give me a hint?”
As soon as Fang Qingying spoke these words, she clearly felt 888 disappear, just as suddenly as it had appeared earlier.
888’s message was clear: stop speculating and focus on completing the tasks.
Since she’d already promised 888 to attend the banquet, Fang Qingying decided to give it her all!
Though these two tasks from 888, tsk tsk were quite something.
Distracted by this new development, Fang Qingying once again forgot she had meant to message Gu Shengxiao.
Lying in bed, she glanced at her phone 10 PM. She plugged it in to charge on the nightstand and closed her eyes to sleep.
The next morning, Fang Qingying changed into a fresh, youthful dress and happily headed downstairs.
These work-free days were truly comfortable, she could do whatever she wanted. Recently, she’d even ordered her favorite drawing tablet and computer online.
Fang Qingying decided to return to her old profession. She planned to create a side account and start serializing comics on Weibo, ensuring she’d have an income stream after leaving the entertainment industry.
Of course, this plan would never come to fruition unless the Fang family went bankrupt.
The housekeeper approached her at the foot of the stairs, holding an envelope. “Miss, this letter arrived for you.”
“Huh? What kind of letter would I get now?” Fang Qingying eyed the plain white envelope suspiciously. It bore only her name, with no other details.
Holding the envelope by one corner, she turned to the elderly butler beside her. “Grandpa Bai, don’t you think it’s suspicious that there’s no information on this envelope?”
The butler adjusted his reading glasses and examined the envelope’s material. “Miss, this is from your university.”
Fang Qingying blinked, her dark eyes filled with confusion. The original host was indeed a 22-year-old student, but she’d started interning during her sophomore year.
Even if she hadn’t, the original host had never been keen on attending classes she was practically a ghost student, only showing up when absolutely necessary.
Her father had enrolled her in finance, a subject she despised, scraping by with barely passing grades each semester.
Why would the university send her a letter now?
A sense of foreboding washed over Fang Qingying. Clutching the letter, she headed back upstairs, if it contained something the original host wouldn’t want her parents to see, she needed to destroy the evidence!
But she’d only taken two steps when her parents descended the stairs arm-in-arm, spotting her immediately.
Her mother glanced at the plain white envelope. “Did your school send your grade report?”
The words “grade report” jolted Fang Qingying awake. She suddenly remembered on exam day, the original host had been in a terrible mood after being ignored by Yun Yifan, so she’d turned in a blank paper.
This, the report would be nothing but zeros!
Panicked, Fang Qingying forced an awkward laugh. “No, the grades aren’t out yet. Why would they send a report?”
Honestly, why did schools insist on mailing grade reports after every exam? Didn’t they realize some students didn’t need them? Like her, for instance.
No sooner had she spoken than her father’s phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID, then gave Fang Qingying a meaningful look.
That single glance nearly made her cry she just knew this call spelled trouble.
“Hello? This is Fang Qingying’s father. What can I do for you, Professor?”
“I see. Thank you for letting me know.”
“Fang Qingying. You’ve got some nerve.”
The moment he hung up, Fang Qingying’s father glared at her through gritted teeth.
“Dad, I can explain! There’s a reason!”
In the spacious living room, Fang Qingying’s mother sat cross-legged, a feather duster in hand, her sharp gaze sweeping over the man and woman seated on the floor.
“Care to explain these straight zeros?” She held up the opened envelope containing nothing but a grade report, filled with zeros.
It was enough to make her faint on the spot. Who was it that had insisted their precious daughter study finance? And now she’d brought home a goose egg?
“Darling, I think I can explain this, so ” Fang Qingying’s father, also seated on the floor, looked up pleadingly at his wife’s stormy expression.
“You dare speak? You’re the one who made her study finance, and look how that turned out!” His words only stoked her fury, and she began berating him instead.
Naturally, she couldn’t bring herself to scold her precious daughter, so her husband would have to do.
Fang Qingying kept her head down, terrified of incurring her mother’s wrath. But she forgot one crucial detail you can run, but you can’t hide.
After thoroughly chastising her husband, Fang Qingying’s mother turned her ire toward her daydreaming daughter.
“Did you hear a single word I just said?” She slammed the feather duster onto the table, glaring coldly.
“Ah! I heard everything. I promise I’ll study hard and improve!” Fang Qingying snapped to attention, nodding earnestly.
Her sincerity was palpable except she failed to notice her father’s despairing expression as he silently facepalmed.
Well, there goes my ally, he thought.
“You’re sure you understood?” Her mother’s doting demeanor vanished, replaced by stern seriousness.
“Absolutely.” Fang Qingying swore confidently though in truth, she hadn’t caught a single word.
“Then I’ll expect full marks next time.” Her mother’s face lit up, and she pulled Fang Qingying up to pat her head affectionately. “That’s my good girl.”
Fang Qingying froze. “…”
What had she just agreed to? Full marks?!
Her father could only shrug helplessly. If his daughter wanted to dig her own grave, who was he to stop her?
Fang Qingying laughed awkwardly, shooting her father a pleading look but he showed no intention of helping.
At this rate, she might no longer be Daddy’s favorite.
“You don’t want to?” Her mother’s face fell, and she sniffled dramatically. “If people find out about these grades, I’ll be the laughingstock of our social circle! They’ll say I failed as a mother!”
Fang Qingying knew it was an act, but she still panicked. Her father, however, remained unfazed.
A true master at work.
Sweeping his wife into his arms, he comforted her before turning to Fang Qingying with a smile. “Starting tomorrow, I’m hiring a tutor to teach you the basics. If you don’t score full marks, you’re quitting the entertainment industry.”
“Dad! That’s, that’s not fair!” Fang Qingying’s eyes widened. Full marks? She’d be lucky to pass! The original host hated finance, and so did she! Besides, she’d studied animation design in college, how else could she become a manga artist?
She wasn’t some prodigy, what made him think a tutor could magically grant her perfect scores?
“Life isn’t fair. Look how you’ve upset your mother. How could you possibly get zeros? You usually barely pass!” Her father shot her a disappointed look before carrying her mother upstairs.
His unspoken message was clear: even her usual terrible grades were better than straight zeros.
Staring at the grade report, Fang Qingying wished she could drag the original host out and throttle her. Why should she suffer for someone else’s mistakes?
Just then, her phone rang.
Without checking the caller ID, she answered irritably. “Hello? Who is this?”
“Ying, did I call at a bad time?”
Gu Shengxiao’s voice instantly softened her tone.
“No, I’m just not in a good mood.”
“Want to talk about it? Maybe I can help.”
“Well! I turned in a blank exam last time, and my mom found out. Now she wants me to score full marks, or I have to quit the entertainment industry.”
“Finance?”
