- Chapter 14 - Parents
“Are you going as a guest to someone else’s house?” Shen Lixie instinctively retorted. What kind of logic was it to buy a gift fruit basket when returning to one’s own home?
Fang Qingying lowered her head in grievance, fiddling with her fingers as she whispered, “I… I’m just scared, okay?”
She was terrified that if her supposed parents saw through her and realized she wasn’t their real daughter, they might drag her off to some research lab to be dissected and studied.
“So you do know how to write the word ‘scared.’ Think about all the mistakes you made before talking back to Uncle Fang, quarreling with Aunt Fang, throwing things around.” Shen Lixie began listing the original owner’s past misdeeds one by one. “If Qingyu were home, would you have even tried to hit him too?”
“I… What if I told you I might’ve been possessed back then? Would you believe me?” Fang Qingying ventured, stealing glances at Shen Lixie’s expression as she spoke.
It was as if the slightest hint of disapproval from him would send her shrinking back into her shell like a frightened turtle.
“I hope you were possessed before, and that you can change for the better now. None of us are asking for much, just that you learn to grow up.” Shen Lixie sighed, speaking to her with earnest patience.
After all, he had watched Fang Qingying grow from a tiny, sweet dumpling of a child into the graceful young woman she was now. It was hard for him to stay angry with her.
Even if he was truly upset, his anger was directed more at their collective failure to discipline her properly, which had led her to become the person she was today.
Despite all the outrageous things she had done, they still couldn’t bear to see her suffer. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be mentoring this troublesome girl now, long after he had stopped taking on new trainees.
Fang Qingying listened to Shen Lixie’s words in silence, her head bowed, her long lashes casting faint shadows over her cheeks.
She couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. The original owner had been so fortunate, doted on by her parents, protected by her elder brother yet she had managed to squander it all.
Was it really true that people never cherished what came too easily?
Back when she had been in the orphanage, she had spent countless nights praying for a miracle.
She had dreamed that one day, her parents would walk into the director’s office and say, “Our precious daughter, we’ve come to take you home.”
But alas, it had all been nothing but an empty dream.
Prospective adoptive parents had always found her too old, or had been put off by her less-than-stellar reputation at the orphanage.
So she had stayed until adulthood, forced to fend for herself and take responsibility for her own life.
After gaining fame as a comic artist, she had spent most of her earnings supporting the orphanage’s operations and funding an organization dedicated to reuniting lost children with their families.
Her thoughts wandered, drifting further and further away. By the time they reached the house, Fang Qingying was still sitting dazedly in the passenger seat, lost in her own world.
Shen Lixie got out of the car and spotted the middle-aged couple standing at the entrance. He tapped on the passenger window.
“We’re home. Aren’t you coming out?” he asked.
The sound of knuckles against glass snapped Fang Qingying back to reality. Flustered, she unbuckled her seatbelt, grabbed her phone, and pushed the car door open.
The moment she stepped out, her eyes met those of the couple standing by the door.
Neither side moved. They simply stood there, gazing at one another in silence.
Fang Qingying could see the tears welling up in the beautiful woman beside the middle-aged man, her expression torn between weeping and the fear of startling her, making Fang Qingying’s heart ache with each throb.
Though the middle-aged man was staring coldly at Fang Qingying, she could sense the pain hidden in his gaze.
The two sides locked eyes for a long time before the middle-aged man finally spoke first. “Weren’t you swearing you’d rather die than come back?”
Hearing his awkward words, Fang Qingying couldn’t help but shed tears. She didn’t know if it was the lingering emotions of the original owner or her own response to the warmth of family that made her cry.
The beautiful woman, upon hearing this, couldn’t resist slapping her husband’s shoulder and glaring at him fiercely. “What kind of nonsense are you spouting? Our daughter has finally come home, and you’re trying to drive her away again?”
The moment she had heard the news that her precious daughter had been rescued after a suicide attempt, she had wanted nothing more than to rush to her side and hold her tight.
She knew her husband was all tough talk but soft-hearted but their precious daughter didn’t.
Even before she had returned, he had been restless, pacing anxiously. Yet the moment he saw her, the first words out of his mouth were so hurtful.
“I…” The middle-aged man, scolded by his wife, fell silent.
He knew his own temperament seeing this stubborn girl standing there without saying a word made him unable to resist lecturing her.
But now, seeing his daughter cry, oh, how his heart ached.
“Ying’er, come here,” Mother Fang said, reaching out to Fang Qingying.
Hearing this, Fang Qingying wiped her tears and opened her mouth. “Dad, Mom… your daughter was wrong.”
These words weren’t just hers, they were also what the original owner had wanted to say.
Hearing their voices, Fang Qingying could clearly feel the regret in the original owner’s memories. After slitting her wrists, as she felt her life slipping away, she had been filled with deep remorse.
She regretted not speaking properly to her parents, regretted her own willfulness, regretted the pain her family would feel upon hearing of her death.
These emotions crashed over her like waves, drenching her from head to toe.
Hearing the usually stubborn Fang Qingying admit her mistakes, Mother Fang could hold back no longer.
She shook off Father Fang’s hand and pulled Fang Qingying into a tight embrace. “My daughter, you scared me to death! Do you know how much I trembled when I heard the news? I regret it so much and your father does too!”
By the end, Mother Fang was clearly trying to mend the rift between father and daughter.
But Father Fang, upon hearing this, immediately widened his eyes and stiffened his neck in protest. “Whoever regrets it can regret it, I certainly don’t!”
Mother Fang turned and glared at him again before leading Fang Qingying inside.
As they walked, she continued to expose Father Fang’s secrets. “Don’t listen to your father’s nonsense. You have no idea, he practically cradles the products you endorse and the ads you star in every day!”
“Not only that, he calls his business partners daily to promote your products, finding every possible way to praise you!”
Fang Qingying could tell Mother Fang was changing the subject, they no longer wanted to dwell on the painful past.
Meanwhile, Father Fang trailed behind them, his face turning as red as a monkey’s bottom as he listened to his wife airing all his secrets, barely resisting the urge to cover her mouth.
Fang Qingying raised an eyebrow and asked, “Dad, do you really think what I filmed is good?”
Fang’s father snorted coldly, “Of course.”
