- Chapter 11 - Receiving People
Fang Qingying pulled Gu Shengxiao’s hand as she hurried downstairs, afraid that if she were a step too late, there would be no porridge left to drink.
Gu Shengxiao sighed helplessly, letting herself be dragged along. “Slow down. What if you fall?”
How could someone who had just woken up from a drunken stupor be so full of energy?
“I won’t! I’m very nimble,” Fang Qingying stopped in her tracks, standing on the step below and looking up with a smile. “When I was little, I used to run up and down stairs all the time, never once did I fall.”
She spoke with absolute confidence, completely unaware of the strange look that had appeared in Gu Shengxiao’s eyes.
Gu Shengxiao’s kitchen was an open-concept bar-style setup, connected to the dining table where two servings of food were laid out.
The porridge was a simple millet congee, perfect for soothing the stomach, though Fang Qingying wasn’t particularly fond of its texture.
“Do you prefer sweetened millet porridge or plain?” Gu Shengxiao asked leisurely after finishing a bowl, dabbing at the traces on her lips.
“…Plain, I guess?” Fang Qingying hesitated for three seconds before answering. Could you even put sugar in millet porridge? Wasn’t that some kind of culinary abomination?
“Would you like another bowl?” Gu Shengxiao asked, watching her.
Fang Qingying shook her head quickly. “N-no, I’m good.” One bowl was already the limit of what she could stomach, another would be impossible.
“Alright.” Gu Shengxiao withdrew her hand, observing as Fang Qingying turned her attention to the steamed buns and fried dough sticks. “Who called you earlier? You seemed a bit preoccupied.”
Munching on a bun without looking up, Fang Qingying replied, “Brother Shen came to pick me up. He’s waiting downstairs right now.”
She was mimicking the original owner’s way of addressing Shen Lixie, knowing that a tough battle lay ahead.
As the cannon-fodder supporting character, she had managed to avoid the awkwardness of meeting the male lead, but she couldn’t escape dealing with the original owner’s family. So, for now, she had to adopt some of the original owner’s habits even if she couldn’t fool others, at least she could fool herself.
Fang Qingying thought about it with a Zen-like calm.
“It’s so hot in the summer, why didn’t you invite him up?”
“I don’t know why Brother Shen didn’t come up.”
“How about we ask Shen Lixie to come up now?” Gu Shengxiao suggested.
Fang Qingying shook her head. “I’m done eating. I’ll head down now.”
As she stood up from the chair, clearly unwilling to linger for even a moment, Gu Shengxiao instinctively reached out and grasped Fang Qingying’s slender wrist.
The delicate skin felt slightly cool to the touch, like the temperature of fine mutton-fat jade.
“Your wrist is a bit cold, Xiao Ying. Are you feeling unwell?” Gu Shengxiao asked worriedly, her limpid eyes reflecting only Fang Qingying’s face.
Fang Qingying shook her head. The only thing she felt was the lingering headache from the hangover as for anything else, honestly, she didn’t notice.
“I’ve always had a cold constitution, prone to illnesses big and small. I’m used to it by now,” Fang Qingying said, seeing the concern in Gu Shengxiao’s eyes. She offered a reassuring smile. “Look at me, aren’t I perfectly lively right now?”
She had no memories of the original owner’s illnesses, but she could faintly sense the original’s aversion to hospitals, a weariness born from too many visits.
And then there were the notes in the original owner’s phone, which made it clear that she had been sickly since childhood.
Although it was unclear how the original host had eventually recovered, those experiences still left her with an aversion to hospitals.
“Mhm.” Gu Shengxiao lowered her eyes and responded softly.
Fang Qingying looked down at the wrist being held and revealed her adorable little canine teeth. “Xiaoxiao, is there anything else you wanted to tell me?”
Her underlying meaning was clear, if there was nothing else, she was about to go find Shen Lixie now.
“There is.” Gu Shengxiao pressed her lips together and said quietly, “The clothes you changed out of, I only soaked them in water but haven’t washed them yet. Do you want to wait for me to finish washing and hanging them before giving them to you?”
After speaking, Gu Shengxiao tightly pursed her lips. She knew these weren’t the words she truly wanted to say. But when the words she longed to voice rose to her throat, they came out differently.
She wanted to ask Fang Qingying if she could stay, but she knew, Fang Qingying would never stay.
“Sure! Then I’ll trouble you, Xiaoxiao,” Fang Qingying turned around, reversed their grip, and clasped Gu Shengxiao’s hand tightly with a smile.
Originally, she had intended to ask Gu Shengxiao to throw the clothes away after all, she wasn’t short on a few outfits. But then again? What she lacked was a legitimate reason to get close to Gu Shengxiao.
Just being friends, how could that be enough?
Don’t forget, she had promised System 888 to cuckold the male lead. Though her personal desires were the real driving force behind this plan, so what?
She had fallen for Gu Shengxiao at first sight. When you like someone, you should chase them boldly!
So without hesitation, she chose to trouble Gu Shengxiao with washing those clothes, it was the perfect excuse to see her again.
“Okay.” Gu Shengxiao nodded.
She had no idea that her own thoughts just now had almost perfectly mirrored Fang Qingying’s.
Using these clothes as a medium, a reasonable excuse for the two of them to seek each other out.
The clothes: I really have it tough these days, having to moonlight as a matchmaker.
“Then I’ll go find Brother Shen now?” Fang Qingying tentatively tried to pull her wrist free.
Gu Shengxiao’s eyes dimmed as she allowed her to withdraw her hand. The next second, she forced a smile. “Be careful. Call or message me when you get home.”
“Okay.” Fang Qingying nodded obediently.
Under Gu Shengxiao’s reluctant gaze, she inched her way toward the entryway.
Then, Fang Qingying heard her phone ring again. She quickly pulled it out, it was indeed Shen Lixie calling.
“Hello? Brother Shen.”
“Still not done eating?”
Shen Lixie’s tone sounded rather gruff, clearly growing impatient from waiting.
“Ah? We’re done, I’m coming out now!” Only then did Fang Qingying realize why Shen Lixie was upset and hurriedly slipped on her sneakers before dashing out.
“Slow down.” Gu Shengxiao sighed softly, unsure if Fang Qingying had even registered her earlier words. The girl was always so impulsive not a good habit.
After Fang Qingying left, a few minutes later, Gu Shengxiao’s phone vibrated. She checked it to find a message from Fang Qingying on WeChat, a photo.
In the picture, the woman gazed at the camera, suddenly breaking into a sweet, radiant smile for reasons unknown. The sight stirred something deep in Gu Shengxiao’s heart.
That face, meticulously crafted by the Creator, was enough to captivate countless hearts. Coupled with such a soft, endearing smile, it was impossible not to melt instantly.
Behind the image was also an accompanying voice message.
