After I Married the Comatose CEO - Chapter 9
“Second Young Master, are there any other questions?” Xie Qiu began to politely ask him to leave. “If not, I’m going to continue reading bedtime stories to my husband.”
He Jingchen snapped out of it and used his usual argument: “Your marriage has no legal effect and didn’t have my brother’s consent. It doesn’t count at all.”
“How do you know your brother doesn’t agree?” Xie Qiu held the man’s hand and shook it gently. “You aren’t a mind reader for your brother.”
He Jingchen said coldly, “I just know.”
“Fine. Even if my husband didn’t like me that much before, have you thought about what he’ll do when he wakes up and finds out I married him while he was a vegetable?” Xie Qiu trailed off. “With your brother’s personality, what do you think he’ll do?”
He Jingchen’s face changed. “Xie Qiu, what exactly do you want?”
“I’ve already told you, but you won’t listen.” Xie Qiu sighed. “I just want to take good care of your brother and wait for him to wake up.”
He Jingchen didn’t speak, but his face clearly said, “I don’t believe you.”
Xie Qiu suddenly changed his tone: “If you do this again, I’ll tell my husband you bullied me when he wakes up.”
He Jingchen was stunned. “When did I bully you?”
Xie Qiu: “Always sneaking up and scaring me.”
He Jingchen: “…”
That counts as bullying?
“Believe it or not, I’m telling the truth.” Xie Qiu turned back and gazed down at the sleeping face, never letting go of the hand he was holding. “I have always admired Siyan-ge. I just felt I wasn’t good enough for him before, so I had to hide that love deep in my heart. But things are different now. No matter what my husband becomes, I am satisfied as long as I can stay by his side.”
His long, thick eyelashes lowered. Just his beautiful side profile alone made people feel a sense of deep sadness.
He Jingchen opened his mouth. Some things he had believed for a long time were starting to shake.
Could it be that the person in front of him really married a man in a coma because of love?
Thinking about it carefully, except for a few times they met recently where Xie Qiu said some confusing things, since marrying into the family, he really hadn’t done anything wrong.
Not only did he not try to get close to him, but he also spent a lot of time in the room accompanying his older brother every day.
Maybe he really had misunderstood?
“Xiao Qiu!” At that moment, Su Wanrong, who was standing in the hallway, couldn’t help but speak up. “You really are deeply in love with Siyan. I am so moved!”
He Jingchen called out, “Mother.”
Xie Qiu noticed the fingers in his palm started moving again, so he held on with both hands. “Mom, you heard everything…”
“Good child, why didn’t you tell me sooner?” Su Wanrong entered the room and walked quickly to his side. “If I had known, I would have arranged the marriage long ago. Siyan wouldn’t have…”
“Mom, I wasn’t brave enough before.” Xie Qiu’s expression was firm. “But starting today, I will never let go of Siyan-ge’s hand.”
As he said this, he noticed the large hand he was holding suddenly stopped struggling.
It was as if… the man had heard what he said.
Even though he knew it was likely a coincidence, Xie Qiu felt a bit guilty.
It should be fine. When He Siyan wakes up, he will surely divorce him immediately. At that time, even if he doesn’t want to let go, he’ll have to.
So, those words weren’t exactly a lie.
“Good, good…” Tears flowed from Su Wanrong’s eyes. She leaned over and tightly held both of their hands, her voice trembling with emotion. “He Siyan must have earned incredible blessings in his past life to have such a good wife like you. When he wakes up, I will make sure he cherishes you dearly.”
Xie Qiu replied softly, “Being able to marry Siyan-ge is also a blessing I earned in my past life.”
“But Xiao Qiu, did I just hear you call Siyan ‘husband’?” Su Wanrong withdrew her hand and wiped the corners of her eyes, suddenly asking a completely different question.
Xie Qiu: “Uh…”
“I’m so happy you’re finally willing to change how you address him.” Su Wanrong immediately took off the jade bracelet she was wearing on her wrist. “To celebrate you calling him husband, I’m giving this bracelet to you.”
Xie Qiu quickly refused, “This is too expensive, Mom. I can’t accept it.”
Although he didn’t know the exact price, just looking at the clear, watery color of the jade, he knew it was worth a fortune. He had already received many things from the He family; a person shouldn’t be greedy.
“It’s fine. I have a whole box of bracelets like this.” Su Wanrong pulled one of his hands toward her, insisting on sliding the bracelet onto his wrist.
Xie Qiu’s wrist was slender, and his skin looked even fairer against the green of the jade bracelet.
Su Wanrong smiled. “It looks beautiful.”
Xie Qiu had no choice but to accept it. “Thank you, Mom.”
“Xiao Qiu, I won’t disturb you and Siyan while you build your feelings for each other.” Su Wanrong turned around and looked at her younger son standing at the door. “Jingchen, you should go back and rest, too.”
As the two left the room, Xie Qiu couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief.
He let go of He Siyan’s hand, only to realize he had been gripping it too tightly. The pale hand had been squeezed red again. He instinctively apologized, “Sorry, husband, I used too much force.”
The moment the words left his mouth, he realized he had called him “husband” very naturally. Xie Qiu bit his lip, his cheeks feeling slightly warm.
It turned out that calling him husband wasn’t as embarrassing as he had imagined. Perhaps it was because the person involved was in a coma and couldn’t hear him shouting nonsense.
Xie Qiu cleared his throat, his tone a bit shy. “Husband, if you don’t mind, I’ll call you that from now on.”
He had already accepted the “change of address” gift. If he didn’t call him husband later, Su Wanrong would probably be unhappy. As expected, the man lying on the bed did not react at all.
Xie Qiu placed the man’s hand back on the bed. “Then, husband, I’ll finish reading The Princess and the Pea to you.”
He opened the book to the page they were on and continued reading, “Now everyone could see that she was a real princess…”
“That’s all for today.” After finishing, Xie Qiu closed the book. “Tomorrow is Saturday. I don’t have to go to school, so I can stay with you all day.”
He got up from the chair and straightened the blanket on the bed. “Goodnight, husband. I hope you have a beautiful dream tonight, too.”
The next day, Xie Qiu slept until he woke up naturally. He stepped onto the carpet with bare feet, walked to the window, and pulled back the curtains.
It was a sunny day, perfect for going outside to enjoy the sun. After washing up, Xie Qiu walked through the door of his room directly into the sickroom next door.
The caregiver had raised the head of the bed and was preparing to brush He Siyan’s teeth with a cotton swab. Hearing him enter, the caregiver called out, “Good morning, Eldest Young Madam.”
“Good morning.” Xie Qiu walked over. “Do you have to brush Mr. He’s teeth every day?”
“Yes,” the caregiver replied. “Even though the Eldest Young Master doesn’t eat through his mouth, we still need to clean it twice a day to keep his teeth and mouth healthy.”
“I see.” Xie Qiu nodded. “Go ahead with your work. I’ll come back in a bit.”
Xie Qiu went downstairs to have breakfast with Su Wanrong. He didn’t know where the Second Young Master had run off to so early in the morning, but that wasn’t his concern.
After breakfast, Xie Qiu asked, “Mom, the weather is great today. I’d like to take Siyan-ge out for some sun. Is that okay?”
“Of course, you can.” Su Wanrong agreed immediately, then smiled. “Xiao Qiu, why aren’t you calling him ‘husband’?”
Xie Qiu gave a small smile and naturally changed his words. “Then I’ll go take my husband downstairs.”
Su Wanrong replied with a beaming smile, “Good child, go ahead.”
Xie Qiu went back upstairs and asked the caregiver, “Where is Mr. He’s wheelchair kept?”
“It’s in the storage room inside.” The caregiver stood up. “Are you planning to…?”
Xie Qiu replied, “I want to push Mr. He downstairs to get some sun.”
“Oh! I understand!” The caregiver immediately walked inside. “I’ll get it for you right now.”
Xie Qiu couldn’t help but ask, “Do you usually push Mr. He downstairs?”
“We haven’t,” the caregiver replied honestly. “The Eldest Young Master’s injuries were very serious. It was only in the last two months that his stats stabilized. The Madam was worried, so she usually didn’t let us push him outside.”
Xie Qiu became worried. “Then is it okay for me to take him out for sun now?”
“It’s fine now. The morning sun is mild; you just need to keep track of the time,” the caregiver replied. “And getting sunlight is very good for coma patients. You don’t have to worry.”
“That’s good then.” Xie Qiu felt relieved.
“Eldest Young Madam, the Madam really likes you,” the caregiver remarked while setting up the wheelchair. “The moment you asked, she agreed.”
Xie Qiu gave a small smile. “She’s just being kind to me because of her son.”
He didn’t think he was that likable; Su Wanrong was only nice to him because of He Siyan.
The caregiver leaned over and carefully lifted the man from the bed, placing him in the wheelchair. Xie Qiu quickly stepped forward to help steady him. Indeed, being a caregiver required physical strength; it wasn’t a job just anyone could do.
The caregiver explained carefully, “This wheelchair is electric. The buttons are here to control the direction.”
Xie Qiu gripped the handles on the back of the wheelchair with both hands. “Okay, I understand.”
“I’ll press the elevator button for you.” The caregiver stepped out of the room first and headed toward the elevator.
This was the first time Xie Qiu had used the elevator since coming to the He family home. Soon, he pushed the wheelchair to the first floor.
Su Wanrong was sitting on the sofa. When she saw them, she came over to meet them. “Xiao Qiu, did the caregiver say anything?”
Xie Qiu answered obediently, “The caregiver said it’s fine as long as we keep track of the time in the sun.”
“Good, go ahead then,” Su Wanrong said. “I have to go to the company today as well.”
Xie Qiu said goodbye to her and pushed the wheelchair toward the garden.
It was currently the transition between spring and summer. Plants were growing most thicky, and it was the time of year when nature’s life force was most abundant.
The He estate had several gardens managed by professional gardeners. Right now, the entire yard was filled with the scent of flowers.
Xie Qiu pushed the wheelchair under a swing, squatted down, and tilted his face up to feel the temperature of the sun.
“It’s just right, not too hot.” He squatted in front of the wheelchair and straightened the blanket covering the man’s legs.
He Siyan sat in the wheelchair with the sunlight glowing on his pale, handsome face. He looked as if he had simply drifted off to sleep while enjoying the sun.
Xie Qiu stood up, looked around, and walked over to a patch of bright flowers.
“Those are called Corn Poppies,” an old man wearing a straw hat shouted from a distance. “If you like them, you can pick a few to take back.”
“Corn Poppies, what a lovely name.” Xie Qiu raised his voice as well. “Thank you! I’ll just take one.”
With that, he leaned down and picked a single flower.
Xie Qiu walked back to the wheelchair with the flower and tucked it behind the man’s ear. With the bright poppy as a contrast, the man’s face looked a bit fuller of life.
Xie Qiu clapped his hands in satisfaction. “This looks much better.”
He pulled his phone out of his pocket and took two photos of He Siyan’s face with a “click-click.”
Just as Xie Qiu was about to look down at the photos, he accidentally noticed that the large hand resting on the wheelchair armrest had suddenly tightened.
His heart jumped. He quickly tried to soothe him: “Husband, I think you look especially handsome wearing a flower.”
The man’s hand was still using force, and the veins on the back of his hand were popping out.
Xie Qiu hesitated. He leaned in, took the poppy off, and tucked it behind his own ear instead. He coaxed softly, “Fine, fine, I’ll wear it myself, okay?”
As soon as he said that, the hand relaxed.
Xie Qiu: “?”
Wait, could his husband in a coma actually hear him?
