- Chapter 95 - The Demon-Subduing Vow Formation Opens
In the Azure Sea Palace of the demon realm.
The ground was covered in a shocking crimson. The person lying there was only breathing weakly.
This scene felt strangely familiar.
Ye Chu sat on the throne, his cold eyes watching Jiufang Cangze’s reaction. “I should have thought of it earlier. The simplest way to unseal the Moon Shadow Wall is to destroy the wall itself.”
Jiufang Cangze’s once-intact clothes were now in tatters from the whipping. He had his eyes half-closed, and blood constantly flowed from his slightly parted lips.
“Flaying, tendon-snapping, bone-crushing. Jiufang Cangze, which would you like to start with?”
At that, Jiufang Cangze finally showed a reaction. He coughed up a mouthful of blood and slanted his eyes toward the figure on the throne. He said, with a broken voice, “…Cough… Ye Chu, to destroy the entire demon realm for one person… is it worth it?”
A flicker of emotion appeared on Ye Chu’s face. “If it were you, you would do the same.”
Jiufang Cangze let out a long breath and closed his eyes.
The world called him ruthless and cruel, but after witnessing Ye Chu’s devotion, he could only sigh and admit he fell short.
A blood-red moon hung in the sky. Its dark light shone on the endlessly flowing Flowing Light River and on the highest point of the demon realm, the Azure Sea Palace.
The trade went smoothly. Neither Qiu Fuxue nor Ye Chu were present. It was Li Yun ( who, with a group of disciples, used the Skeleton to exchange for Lan Shiyi and Prince Ning.
With the exception of a few who had already died, the rest of the Nine Fiends were now in Ye Chu’s hands.
“Brother!” After hearing the news, Lan Zhi had been waiting at the Qianshan Sect. Seeing that his brother was back, safe and sound, he could finally put his heart at ease.
Though Lan Shiyi was a mortal, he was well-traveled and hadn’t been too shaken. But there was one scene he couldn’t forget.
He looked at Qiu Fuxue. The other man’s face seemed normal. “Sect Leader Qiu, that person… he wasn’t held with us. Ye Chu took him. I’m afraid things don’t look good for him.”
“I figured.” Qiu Fuxue’s tone was so calm, it was as if he were talking about a stranger.
Qiu Fuxue looked up at the sky. A strange phenomenon was already visible. Behind the layers of clouds, a faint, dark crimson disk had appeared.
The Red Moon had descended upon the world. The Nine Fiends were wreaking havoc.
“City Lord Lan, you and your people should return now. Be sure to prepare. A great disaster is about to descend upon the mortal realm.”
Lan Zhi had also noticed the outline in the sky. He gave Qiu Fuxue a look. “Sunset City is willing to do its part.”
“No need.” Qiu Fuxue shook his head, an endless sorrow appearing in his eyes. His voice held a hint of desolation. “I have a way to handle it.”
After seeing them off, Qiu Fuxue returned to his study and found Lun Ling waiting at the door.
Qiu Fuxue pretended to be fine. “I’ve lost your lord again. As for whether you stay or leave, it’s up to you.”
Lun Ling took out the Demon Order. Just like last time, he handed it to Qiu Fuxue. “My lord already told me. This is what he left for you.”
Unlike last time, there was no hostility between them. Qiu Fuxue’s hands trembled as he took the Demon Order. The cold, hard token clinked against the red beads on his wrist, making a soft sound.
His voice was choked with sobs. “You knew all along?”
Lun Ling turned his head, trying to hide his red eyes. “My lord was always looking for a way to save himself and kill the Nine Fiends. You made him change all of his plans.”
“My lord said… he was willing to give everything to you.”
Qiu Fuxue squeezed the token. “He shouldn’t have done this…”
If only he had fallen in love with him a little later, maybe he wouldn’t be in so much pain.
That firm heart had suddenly become so wavering.
He locked himself in his study again, placing a barrier outside so no one could hear the noises from inside.
Qiu Fuxue lay on his desk, clutching Jiufang Cangze’s heart-blood beads, and wept uncontrollably.
Black Ball (小煤球) stuck out its tongue and licked its master’s hand, but the only response it got were the echoes of muffled sobs.
He cried until his throat was hoarse. He finally got up, startling Black Ball, who had fallen asleep curled up by his hand.
Qiu Fuxue picked it up, his eyes bloodshot. “We’re going to the demon realm now to save Cangze… I don’t care about anyone else’s life or death anymore.”
Sacrifice? Responsibility? He was tired of it all!
Black Ball still didn’t understand what he was saying, but it sensed its owner needed someone to agree with him. So it nodded without a second thought.
The little guy’s adorable action made Qiu Fuxue laugh through his tears.
He had spoken big words, but he remained in his spot. What he had just said was just for catharsis. He couldn’t actually abandon the common people.
“Loving someone… is truly a weakness…”
The Red Moon’s anomaly became more and more obvious. Just as Qiu Fuxue had said, a torrential downpour fell on the mortal world for several days. Many places suffered from floods, and even the imperial capital experienced earthquakes.
For a time, the people were miserable, asking the immortal sects to come forward and resolve the phenomenon.
After the major sects held a discussion, they decided to go to the head of the immortal sects, the Qianshan Sect, for guidance.
Qiu Fuxue was not seeing anyone, so Li Yun had to act as Sect Leader. He simply told the arriving sect representatives to be patient and led them to the guest rooms.
“Senior Brother.” For an unknown number of times, Li Yun knocked on the study door.
Finally, there was a response. Qiu Fuxue took down the barrier and opened the door himself.
Li Yun noticed his senior brother’s red eyes. It was clear he had just been crying.
“A-Yun.” The two sat facing each other. Qiu Fuxue told him the unvarnished truth. “Cangze is the Moon Shadow Wall itself. He is also one of the Nine Fiends. This disaster in the mortal world is happening because Ye Chu is trying to unseal the Moon Shadow Wall, and the Red Moon spirit’s (赤月元神) return is causing an increase in power.”
“To protect the peace of the mortal world, we must destroy the Nine Fiends and damage the Moon Shadow Wall, which means… his soul will be utterly extinguished.”
“Then…” Li Yun was shocked. His gaze fell on the string of beads his senior brother was clutching tightly. He had been there when the Primordial God gave him the beads and knew what they were.
No wonder his senior brother had been so obsessed with this thing for the past few days.
He already had a guess about the method to utterly extinguish a soul.
The immortal sects had a Demon-Subduing Formation that required eighty-one powerful cultivators to activate together. Then, the demon’s heart-blood would be placed in the formation.
They could manage to gather enough cultivators, but Qiu Fuxue couldn’t bring himself to personally kill the man he loved.
“Senior Brother,” Li Yun called out. He looked up and saw a smile in the other man’s eyes. “If you can’t bear to do it, I’ll go with you to the demon realm to rescue that guy. You’ve sacrificed enough for this mortal world. No one will blame you.”
“At least A-Yun won’t.”
“A-Yun…” Qiu Fuxue got up and hugged Li Yun. His tears, which had just stopped, began to flow again. He cried on his junior brother’s shoulder for a long time.
The two of them walked out of the study and stood on the highest point of the Qianshan Sect, where they could clearly see Sunset City below.
A barrier kept the heavy rain from entering the Qianshan Sect, but Sunset City was already in the throes of a flood. The sounds of suffering mortals filled the air.
Lan Zhi had made preparations after being warned, but the situation in the other cities was likely even more tragic.
A breeze blew the hair at his temples. Qiu Fuxue’s fingers rubbed the heart-blood beads again and again.
“A-Yun, gather the immortal sects…”
“—Open the formation.”
