- Chapter 72 - The Fiend Ying Reveals Its True Form
Just as the two sides were in a tense standoff, a wolf howl suddenly echoed from a distance.
Then, countless howls followed in response.
Shengyan exclaimed, his expression excited. “The wolves are here! Sect Leader Qiu, this time you’ll see with your own eyes that I’m definitely better than Chuanze !”
Jiufang Cangze shot him a look. In the past, an idiot like him wouldn’t have survived for three days under his command.
The sudden wolf attack had been predicted by Qiu Fuxue but he hadn’t expected it so soon.
He lowered his eyes in thought, and a black gold spear he had prepared long ago appeared in his palm. He threw it to Jiufang Cangze.
“Be careful.”
Both the spear and the words filled Jiufang Cangze with warmth.
However, before he could express his gratitude, Shengyan exploded. “Sect Leader Qiu! You’re playing favorites! Why did you give it to him and not me!”
Qiu Fuxue used his old trick. “I didn’t say it’s his. If you want it, go and take it.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Jiufang Cangze disappeared from the courtyard. By the time Shengyan reacted and went to chase him, he was already two miles away.
Cai’er (采兒) stood in the courtyard, covered in snow, her voice slowly turning sinister. “It’s all because of you… you brought the wolves here…”
Qiu Fuxue scoffed, completely dropping the pretense. “You know very well who brought the wolves here.”
Cai’er’s body trembled almost imperceptibly. She looked up, her expression unchanging.
She brushed the snow off her shoulders. “Just stay in the courtyard, and the wolves won’t come in. My master is waiting for me to take care of him. Do as you please.”
The Righteous Heart sword was drawn and blocked her path. Qiu Fuxue was not going to give her a chance to leave.
“The life-and-death contract won’t save you, Ying .”
A small lump of black cloud slowly emerged from the blade. It hopped on the sword’s edge, as if greeting its former kin.
Originally, there was no demonic energy around Cai’er. Qiu Fuxue had tested her countless times and had even thought he might be wrong, but the occasional appearance of his sword spirit made him have a new thought.
The sword spirit had submitted to him. Its demonic energy was gone, and it was no longer a fiend. Its aura had turned into that of an immortal spirit.
According to the information provided by Lanzhi , when the Xue family was massacred, Xue Linwu was escorted out of the city by an old servant. Somehow, his legs became crippled. Now, twenty years later, the old servant had likely reached the end of his lifespan, and Cai’er had become the only one who could take care of him.
Whether they had developed feelings for each other or were simply bound by a contract for mutual benefit, signing a master-servant life-and-death contract was not a bad thing.
Now that her identity was exposed, Cai’er continued to play dumb. “Get out of the way! I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
The commotion outside grew more and more intense, and the sounds of wolf howls grew closer. Xue Linwu (薛林梧) finally couldn’t contain his worry. He turned his wheelchair and came out of the house.
“Gentleman, I have already given you the painting. Why must you be so aggressive?”
Cai’er turned her head when she heard his voice, but that gave Qiu Fuxue an opportunity.
He withdrew the blade from in front of Cai’er. Just as she was about to let down her guard, he turned and thrust the sword toward the immobile Xue Linwu.
“Ah—!!”
In that instant, Cai’er shrieked, and her body transformed into a ball of light that shielded Xue Linwu.
Qiu Fuxue, however, had stopped his blade in time and did not harm anyone.
A triumphant smile flashed in his eyes. “You always bet that I wouldn’t harm an innocent person, but I truly didn’t harm him.”
The exposed Ying was furious. The ball of light suddenly swelled up several times its size and transformed into a twisted humanoid shape.
Its appearance was no different from the fiend cloud’s.
Qiu Fuxue patted the little sword spirit. “I don’t agree with the aesthetics of you fiends.”
Although Ying was huge, it didn’t destroy anything in the courtyard. She forced Qiu Fuxue out of the courtyard and then used an invisible barrier to protect the entire place.
“I have never harmed any living creature since I came here. Why must you stir up trouble?!”
The angry roar exploded in his ears. Qiu Fuxue dodged her attack, and in the distance, he could vaguely see Jiufang Cangze and Shengyan fighting the wolves.
The snow hadn’t stopped falling. The world was a blanket of white. For a moment, Ying seemed to merge with the white snow.
While trying not to damage any other buildings, Qiu Fuxue swung his sword. “Fiends should not get close to mortals! Since you were willing to use your body as a pigment for him, why couldn’t you just leave?”
Compared to the other nine fiends, this Ying was much easier to deal with. This was mostly due to her having merged a part of her body into the pigment, which was not only used for paintings but also hung on the doors of every house.
Qiu Fuxue drew his sword to form a barrier. Just then, something in his sleeve moved. Little Sootball was shaking, but it had to poke its head out to watch the commotion.
He was holding a sword in one hand and forming a barrier with the other. He could only shake his sleeve to get the little guy to go back in.
“Ying, you say you never harmed anyone, so why were there so many snow wolf corpses in the forest a few days ago!”
That was why Little Sootball had fallen on hard times and had to hide everywhere. If it hadn’t run into him, it would probably be dead now.
Ying’s momentum didn’t falter. “They are a bunch of beasts without sentience! They were the ones who hurt Linwu first! If it weren’t for me, how many people in this town would have been eaten by wolves!”
“Then have you ever considered that the wolves are only attacking Ruibai Town because of you?”
Although the snow wolves were not sentient, they were very sensitive to certain auras. There was a large forest outside Ruibai Town, and it was normal for wild beasts to roam there, but they would never actively enter the town to harm people.
The wolf problem had started three years ago, around the same time Cai’er came to town.
Ying’s attack paused for a moment, and then she suddenly became enraged and launched a full-power attack.
“All I want is to stay by his side! What’s wrong with that—?!”
Qiu Fuxue nimbly dodged it. With a loud bang, a house behind him that no one lived in was reduced to dust.
At the same time, a series of urgent wolf howls came rushing toward them.
“A-Xue—!”
Just before a ferocious snow wolf could pounce, a sharp, long spear created a streak of red in the air. The snow wolf was gutted, twitched twice on the snowy ground, and then stopped breathing.
Jiufang Cangze stood behind him, panting. His condition didn’t look good.
“The wolves have gone crazy. They’ve all come in. Shengyan and I can’t hold them off.”
Shengyan took down two snow wolves and ran over to Jiufang Cangze. His voice was full of resentment, as if he had been betrayed by his own brother. “Chuanze, what did you just call Sect Leader Qiu?! You’ve only known each other for a few days! How far have you two gone?!”
Jiufang Cangze scoffed. “You talk too much.”
Seeing that Ying was losing control, Qiu Fuxue had no choice but to interrupt their argument. “You two get to safety. I’ll handle the rest!”
“Alright.” Jiufang Cangze nodded obediently. Shengyan wanted to be a hero and help, but he was dragged by the back of his neck and pulled behind a low wall to hide.
That wasn’t all. Jiufang Cangze curved his lips and continued to provoke him. “Shengyan, I’ll tell you a secret. A-Xue and I have already done everything.”
“WHAT—?!”
Shengyan’s eyes widened. That’s Qiu Fuxue! The being who is like a god in his heart!
