- Chapter 4 - Dating Reality Show 9403
Sang Luo did not give Huo Xun an answer until the day the variety show began filming. He needed to think carefully about why Huo Xun wanted to sign him. If it was because Huo Xun saw potential in him, Sang Luo would have sneered at the thought as he simply did not believe it. If he truly signed with Starry Heavens, he would be completely under Huo Xun’s thumb from then on. That was not a situation Sang Luo wanted to see.
He took a taxi to the filming location himself, as Huo Xun had already left. Upon arrival, Sang Luo was invited into the makeup room. He was somewhat confused and wondered what was happening. While chatting idly, he considered the mechanics of the variety show.
Overall, the show would last three weeks. In the first week, the system would randomly pair guests into duos. The second week involved a blind selection of partners, and the third week consisted of mutual choices. For those who successfully paired up at the end, the production team would even provide a prize. The biggest draw was that most of the guests were non celebrities. Since major stars rarely publicize their relationships easily, any celebrity appearing on this show would certainly have significant status.
It was not long before the makeup artist entered. The moment he saw Sang Luo, his eyes lit up like a hungry lion spotting prey. Sang Luo could not help but frown slightly, though he said nothing.
“Oh my God, it looks like this little beauty was truly not destined to be just background noise,” the artist remarked.
Sang Luo keenly sensed something was off and asked, “What do you mean?”
Realizing he had misspoken, the makeup artist quickly changed the subject. “Here, take a look at your mask.”
Sang Luo’s dark eyes were full of inquiry, and his gaze was sharp enough to see through anyone. The makeup artist stiffened and forced himself to act natural. “Put on the mask before you go out. Do not take it off until the host tells you to.”
Sang Luo nodded, knowing he would not get any more information. “Thank you for your trouble.”
The makeup artist seemed somewhat flattered. “It is no trouble at all. Come, let us change your clothes.”
Fifteen minutes later, Sang Luo’s black hair was gathered and held by a wooden hairpin. He wore a traditional style outfit that was streamlined and simple. Fastening the mask, Sang Luo followed the staff to the main hall.
When he entered, the others had already arrived. Sang Luo instantly drew everyone’s attention. Under the studio lights, he looked even more striking. Even without seeing his face, he left much to the imagination.
“Hello,” a boy greeted him. “You must be number eight. Come here, quickly!”
Sang Luo scanned the room and saw Huo Xun. The man also wore a mask and possessed an aura of calm composure. When his narrow, deep eyes swept over, they carried a heavy sense of pressure.
Sang Luo paused for a moment before replying, “Alright.”
They sat at a large, oval white table, with Sang Luo at the very end.
The overhead lights suddenly flared to life, and the host appeared. “Welcome to 9403. I am your host for this season, and I will be accompanying you throughout the journey.” The host blinked playfully. “If there are any boys that nobody wants, feel free to come chat with me!”
The guests laughed and made joking remarks.
“Now, please introduce yourselves in order. Remember, you cannot say your names. You can only mention hobbies and things like that.”
Starting from number one, Sang Luo felt somewhat uninterested. Huo Xun was number five, and it was soon his turn.
“Participating in this variety show was a company decision. I personally have no intention of dating,” Huo Xun said bluntly. In short, he was telling everyone to stay away from him. He did not say anything else and gestured for the next person to continue. His voice was steady, and every movement reflected his excellent upbringing, making people curious about his true identity.
The guests involved in the entertainment industry quickly guessed Huo Xun’s identity, and their expressions became intrigued. Sang Luo watched all of this and instinctively tapped his mask as if he were lost in thought. He did not snap back to reality until it was his turn.
Sensing the gaze of others, Sang Luo was not nervous. He said calmly, “I do not have many strong preferences, but I detest malicious deception.”
Unlike Huo Xun, Sang Luo did not have a powerful background, so he could not directly refuse the interest of others. Therefore, he said nothing of his likes. As for his dislikes, he was reminding the others not to cross his boundaries. Sang Luo was number eight and the last guest to introduce himself.
“Everyone now has a basic understanding of each other. Please write down the name of the guest who has caught your heart. Guests who successfully choose each other will become the fixed couple for this week.”
In this dating show, being part of a fixed couple came with both benefits and drawbacks. If a mutual selection was successful, the pair could not be dissolved even if they later found they were incompatible. Therefore, everyone was cautious because one mistake could turn them into a laughingstock in the live broadcast room.
Sang Luo did not write down a name, and the production team did not force the issue. The host looked over the slips of paper and expressed some regret. “There are no fixed couples this time.”
Fixed couples were usually a highlight, but there were none today. “Please remove your masks.”
Hearing this, Sang Luo immediately took off his mask. As the light flooded in, he squinted slightly. A faint mist gathered in his beautiful peach blossom eyes, and the red mole at the end of his eyebrow made his pale skin appear even more translucent. Once his eyes adjusted, he realized that most people were looking at him.
Sang Luo did not care, but when he looked at number three, a flash of surprise crossed his eyes. Huo Xun, who had been observing Sang Luo, immediately noticed number three, Bai Chen. That guy was like a smiling tiger, and Huo Xun did not think much of him. Bai Chen and Huo Xun had debuted at the same time, and Bai Chen was now also a top actor. Huo Xun knew Bai Chen because the smiling tiger was a good friend of his younger brother. However, he did not care about that now. He only wanted to know if Sang Luo had taken a liking to Bai Chen. At that thought, Huo Xun’s expression darkened, and his aura became even colder.
“Now, let us introduce ourselves,” the host said, enjoying the drama. “To the guests who chose someone, will you still stand by your choice after seeing them without their masks?”
As the words fell, the faces of two male guests darkened significantly as they were clearly dissatisfied.
After the introductions, Sang Luo had a general understanding of the group. Number one was a wealthy socialite who had recently returned from abroad. Number two was a clean cut, somewhat shy boy. Number three was Bai Chen, whose sexual orientation was unknown. Number four was an A list celebrity whose target was Huo Xun. Number five was Huo Xun. Number six was a superstar diva. Number seven was the boy who had greeted Sang Luo earlier. His goal was unclear, but anyone could see he was interested in Sang Luo.
“For the first round of pairings, we will use random assignment.”
The big screen began to roll, and the final result put Sang Luo and Huo Xun in a group. Both parties were surprised, and Sang Luo had reason to suspect the production team had done this on purpose. The remaining pairs were one and six, two and seven, and three and four.
The others were clearly dissatisfied with the results as well. Then the host spoke up. “Pairings successful! Today’s task is for the couples to cook lunch for each other. Finally, the other groups will rate the meals. Based on the rankings, you can win the rewards you have been waiting for!”
“Is everyone excited?”
No, they were not. Most people had that exact thought, and some even intentionally made pained expressions, making the others laugh. After all, nobody wanted to taste a disastrous meal.
