- Chapter 31 - Ye Mingxi? The Protagonist of This Book?
On Friday night, Sang Luo left with Huo Xun again. They ate out before returning to the villa. Upon their return, Huo Xun had a few drinks and was slightly tipsy. Sang Luo, however, remained perfectly sober; feeling the cool breeze, he found himself deep in thought.
After a moment, he began searching the room. After a long search, he found only their marriage certificate in the nightstand. In the photo, Huo Xun was expressionless, cold as an unfeeling machine, while the original host of this body had a flushed face and a shy smile. There was nothing inherently wrong with the photo, but Sang Luo instinctively felt that the person in the picture was not him. He did not know what the original host looked like, but he felt certain they would not look identical. The person in the photo seemed to be a blend between himself and the original host. He turned this over in his mind but had no way to prove it.
Rubbing his forehead, Sang Luo lay exhausted on the bed and soon drifted into sleep as drowsiness took hold.
Time passed as the moon set and the sun rose, bringing the clear light of a new day. It was another sunny day. When Sang Luo woke up, it was already past 8:00 AM. He looked around and found that Huo Xun was gone. Checking his phone, he found messages as expected.
Huo Xun: Tell me when you are awake. I will have a driver pick you up.
Huo Xun: Come to the company; we have things to discuss.
Sang Luo replied to the message and then went downstairs to heat up some breakfast. By the time he finished, the driver had arrived.
“Mr. Sang, please get in the car.”
“Thank you,” Sang Luo replied curtly, taking a seat in the back.
“Mr. Sang, I will be your driver from now on. My name is Zhang Hao.”
“Driver?” Sang Luo’s gaze shifted. “Huo Xun sent you?”
“It was arranged by CEO Huo. He will explain the details to you once we arrive.”
The driver wore sunglasses and had a stern, no-nonsense expression. His build was quite muscular. If he had not introduced himself as a driver, one might have mistaken him for a bodyguard or a debt collector.
“Okay.” Sang Luo did not refuse. The contract did state the company would handle such arrangements.
Upon arriving at Star Media, someone quickly led Sang Luo upstairs. In the office, both the manager, Qi Wang, and Huo Xun were present.
“You are here.” The moment Huo Xun saw the youth, a slight smile appeared on his face.
“Mm.” Sang Luo was cold as usual, appearing difficult to approach.
“You should have met the driver. He is quite skilled; he will be protecting you from now on.” Huo Xun then pulled out several resumes. “These are files for potential assistants. You will be interviewing them this afternoon.”
Qi Wang chimed in, “As a newcomer, being allowed by CEO Huo to hand-pick your own staff is truly exclusive treatment.”
Sang Luo glanced at Qi Wang, who felt a bit guilty. Since learning that Huo Xun and Sang Luo were married and facing a divorce crisis, Qi Wang had decided to help repair their relationship. He could see Sang Luo was impressive; though cold, his manners and conduct were impeccable, clearly the result of a good upbringing. Qi Wang had caught a glimpse of their marriage certificate; the youth in the photo looked gentle. He wondered what had happened to make him so distant.
Qi Wang’s mind was full of dramatic scenarios: fading passion, a third party, or perhaps a lack of physical harmony. Regardless, he felt it was not their fault; there had to be a misunderstanding! Having followed Huo Xun for so long, he felt he understood his boss. He was cold on the outside but warm on the inside. He could not let them drift apart. Though it was his first time playing matchmaker, the top-tier manager felt a bit nervous. Fortunately, Sang Luo did not press the matter, and Qi Wang breathed a sigh of relief.
“These are the scripts I have screened. See if any interest you.”
Sang Luo took them and flipped through carefully. This time, he focused on the roles and characterization rather than just the pay. He knew Huo Xun would handle the logistics. He looked up and caught a flash of tenderness in Huo Xun’s eyes. For a moment, Sang Luo’s throat tightened; that look was so familiar.
Focusing back on the scripts, Sang Luo became exceptionally serious. Today, his hair was not tied up high but was loosely gathered behind his head with a tie. He looked less sharp and a bit more approachable. He lowered his eyelids, his lashes casting shadows like the wings of a butterfly. The most striking detail, however, was the small, exquisite red mole at the end of his eyebrow.
After a while, Sang Luo pointed to one of the scripts. “Is this role cast yet?”
Qi Wang leaned in and was surprised. “No.”
He was surprised because the role was only considered average among the scripts provided. Moreover, it was only a third male lead role. However, the character was challenging: gentle on the surface, but actually bloodthirsty. It was a villainous role, but the director was very famous.
“Send me the relevant materials.” Sang Luo pondered the character, his fingers absentmindedly stroking the script’s paper.
“Interested in this one?” Huo Xun glanced at it. “Are you confident in your acting?”
Sang Luo thought for a moment. “It should be okay.”
“Sang Luo.” Huo Xun crossed his hands, appearing unusually serious. “I do not want ‘okay.’ I want absolute certainty. I know your acting style; you are an immersion actor who puts yourself into the role. But you must understand that with immersion, there is a risk of not being able to pull yourself back out.”
Huo Xun’s narrow eyes were deep, as if he could see through everything. His slight frown carried a natural sense of pressure. “A dangerous role like this, if you immerse yourself without absolute control, the harm outweighs the benefit. When you are deep in it, the character can seep back into you, occupying part of your consciousness and guiding your actions. Even if it is not that severe, it remains a lingering presence in your mind.”
Huo Xun looked directly at Sang Luo. “It is not that I do not trust you. I am worried about you.”
That single sentence seemed to diffuse the tension in the room. Sang Luo listened; he was not someone who ignored advice, but he had his own ideas. “I do not want to miss this role.”
A smile touched Huo Xun’s lips, his dark eyes sparkling in the sunlight. His voice was low and magnetic. “I will help you.”
For a moment, it felt like the past. Sang Luo was momentarily dazed. It was not until Huo Xun spoke again that he snapped out of it. Under that worried gaze, the ripples in Sang Luo’s heart smoothed over, and those tiny emotions were hidden away.
“I will arrange a teacher for you. We will spend the next few days honing your skills. We can discuss the script later.”
“Okay.”
Thinking of the contract terms, Sang Luo said calmly, “Aside from the assistant I interview this afternoon, there is no need to hire anyone else.”
The S2-tier contract offered excellent benefits, including two or three assistants and several luxury vans. Sang Luo did not need those; one assistant was enough.
“I know.” Huo Xun understood him well. “You call the shots.”
Qi Wang, who had not been able to get a word in, was nearly swooning. Is this the peak romance between a boss and his lady? Even if their feelings were not what they once were, they remained the people who understood each other best. Gosh, why does this feel so sweet?
“Qi Wang.”
“Qi Wang?”
The man gasped as Huo Xun looked at him with a half-smile. A cold sweat broke out. “Ye—yes?”
Huo Xun did not make things difficult for him. “Go prepare for the afternoon interviews.”
“Understood.”
Only the two of them remained in the office. Huo Xun did not speak, and Sang Luo was lost in thought. Huo Xun was actually feeling a bit nervous. After a few minutes, a look of anticipation flashed in Huo Xun’s eyes. “Are you staying for lunch? What do you want to eat?”
Sang Luo’s expression was cold, his eyes clear. “Anything is fine.”
“I will handle the arrangements.” Huo Xun went back to work, while Sang Luo studied the script.
Near noon, Qi Wang sent him the materials for the script and the production crew. When Sang Luo saw the actor playing the lead role, a terrifying sharpness erupted in his eyes.
Ye Mingxi? The protagonist of this book? Or just someone with the same name?
Sang Luo leaned toward the former. In the book, the original host was just cannon fodder who debuted at the same time as the protagonist but had almost no interaction with him. The original host existed only to serve as a foil to the lead. Although the original host was not as stunning as Sang Luo, he was still outstanding in an industry full of beauties. Yet, he was relegated to bit parts, a true cannon fodder character.
Sang Luo remembered the contact San Dian Shui who had messaged him before. The character Xi in Ye Mingxi contains the water radical. So, was San Dian Shui actually Ye Mingxi? Sang Luo thoroughly checked the account again but found nothing. He was curious: if the original host and the protagonist had no interaction, why were they friends? And why, after all this time, had the original host not deleted him? What had happened? What role did the protagonist play in the original host’s life?
There were many questions and no answers yet. As for the other actors in the cast, Sang Luo did not recognize a single one. His attention returned to the character itself.
“Ready for lunch?” Huo Xun tidied his files. “Finished with your work?”
“Let’s go.” Sang Luo saved the files. “My treat this time?”
Huo Xun let out a low laugh of unmasked pleasure. “No need. Next time.”
“Mm.”
They went downstairs, and Huo Xun drove. About five minutes later, they arrived at a restaurant.
“I was not sure what you liked, so I found a place with a good reputation.” Huo Xun parked the car and gallantly opened the door for Sang Luo. “Let’s get out.”
“Wait.” Huo Xun stopped him. Looking at the youth’s striking appearance and then at the gazes of people on the street, he reached for a mask. “You are quite famous now. It is best to be careful and not get recognized.”
Sang Luo genuinely had not considered that. “Thank you.”
Huo Xun led the way, pushing open the door. “Come in.” They went straight to a private room on the third floor. Once seated, Huo Xun looked at the menu. “What would you like?”
“You order.” Sang Luo did not care much for food; he preferred wine. However, he had not touched a drop since coming to this world.
“Okay.”
Huo Xun was not fond of drinking himself, so he did not even consider it, ordering fresh fruit juice instead. While waiting for the food, Huo Xun kept the conversation going, wanting to learn more about Sang Luo. He felt the fan was right; he needed to understand him better for there to be any further possibility. However, Sang Luo was a man of few words. Sometimes Huo Xun would talk for a while, and Sang Luo would only offer a brief acknowledgment.
Huo Xun was not discouraged. He had decided to try his best; perhaps Sang Luo would come to like him. No matter how long it took, he could wait. Even if Sang Luo never fell for him, Huo Xun would not have many regrets. Is that not what loving someone is about? It is intense, beautiful, and pure. It was the most sincere thing Huo Xun could give to Sang Luo.
