- Chapter 2 - An Unexpected Meeting
Upon returning to Linjiang Villa, Sang Luo rubbed his forehead, feeling truly exhausted after the day’s events.
Click.
He pushed the door open and was surprised to find the lights on the first floor already lit. Unexpectedly, the tall, imposing figure of a man came into view.
Huo Xun’s appearance was exceptionally striking. He was very tall, with deep, nearly perfect features and a sharp facial contour. Combined with his unapproachable aura, he looked like someone who was not to be trifled with.
Everything looked familiar. Sang Luo’s eyes darkened, and his own aura grew even more detached.
“You are back?” Huo Xun lifted his eyelids. His voice was flat, betraying no emotion.
“Yes,” Sang Luo replied briefly, standing still.
Huo Xun did not speak further. His hair was still wet, and water droplets slid down his rugged jawline, eventually falling onto his collarbone and disappearing into his collar. For a moment, this man’s silhouette overlapped with the Huo Xun from his past life dressed in combat gear. Sang Luo gave a sudden, mocking smile at this cursed twist of fate.
This was technically their first formal meeting, and Sang Luo found himself somewhat unaccustomed to it.
“In a fight?” Huo Xun’s gaze shifted, his long, sharp eyes hiding a faint glimmer.
Sang Luo was slightly surprised. This man was as sharp as ever. Even as a commoner in this life, his innate powers of observation were still startling.
However, Huo Xun did not pursue the topic. “I came back today to be interviewed for a variety show.” Speaking of this, Huo Xun scrutinized the youth before him, his dark eyes devoid of any affection. “I saw your name.”
Only then did Sang Luo remember that Huo Xun was incredibly wealthy, owning enterprises beyond the reach of most, while simultaneously being a renowned movie star. He was constantly busy, managing his companies and filming at the same time. It was only after becoming a top actor that he gradually shifted his focus toward management. Still, he never gave up acting and was considered a model professional in the industry.
Simply put, Huo Xun was the most powerful person in this circle and someone Sang Luo could not afford to offend.
“Yes,” Sang Luo said, hiding nothing. He already had a premonition of what Huo Xun would say next.
“You know exactly why we are married. I only recently learned that you are also an actor.” Huo Xun tapped his finger on the table. His tone shifted, carrying a subtle threat. “I do not want our relationship exposed to outsiders.”
It was not that Huo Xun feared the exposure itself, but rather that he did not want Sang Luo to use his influence. He could not tolerate any dishonesty and detested that kind of behavior.
Sang Luo naturally understood his meaning, his expression growing colder. “Nothing would please me more.”
Huo Xun raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
“If I truly had any ulterior motives, I would not have waited until now,” Sang Luo said. His voice was like a gentle, flowing stream, clear and clean. He showed no grievance at being wrongly accused, nor any sadness; he was simply stating a fact.
Huo Xun froze. It was true. Sang Luo had been in the industry for two years without making a name for himself. Huo Xun had not conducted a detailed investigation; he had only looked into it instinctively because they were to participate in the same variety show.
“I apologize. I was mistaken,” Huo Xun said. He was a man who separated public and private matters clearly, and his apology was as decisive as his business style. “Please do not take it to heart.”
Sang Luo nodded, showing he did not mind. “I will head up first.”
Huo Xun did not stop him but watched him with a searching gaze, seemingly lost in thought.
Back in his room, Sang Luo lay on the bed, feeling drowsy. However, he did not fall asleep. He began to reflect. Years ago, the parents of the original owner had saved Huo Xun’s parents, which led to their betrothal. After the parents of the original owner died in a fire upon his reaching adulthood, Huo Xun came to the door and married him. After the marriage, the original owner became increasingly insecure, never daring to speak to Huo Xun about any problems for fear of causing trouble. He had been a cowardly person, constantly accommodating others.
Sang Luo’s expression remained calm as he recalled these details, feeling nothing toward the actions of the original owner. He did not care about others; he only wanted to divorce Huo Xun and leave. However, all of that depended on having money. Sang Luo was no longer an emperor, and the original owner had very little money. He had to find a way.
At that moment, his phone rang. Sang Luo glanced at it; it was a message from a stranger.
“Mr. Sang, the pre-show interview for the variety show is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. Please be prepared in advance.”
This variety show was the dating show Huo Xun had mentioned. It was extremely popular, and Sang Luo did not understand how the black-hearted small agency of the original owner had managed to secure such a good resource. He pulled up the contract for the show; the compensation was not small. His thoughts shifted. Perhaps he could try this path. Since he had made a plan, he would not do things halfway. Sang Luo was always quick to act, so he decided to research information on this first.
Ding.
He received a message on his social media account. Sang Luo was puzzled; he did not recall the original owner having any friends.
“San Dian Shui: Are you out of the hospital?” “San Dian Shui: I heard you filmed a web drama. Keep up the good work.”
The tone of the person was familiar, but Sang Luo had no recollection of them.
“San Dian Shui: It has been a long time. Can we talk?” “San Dian Shui: I can introduce you to some seniors. Let us chat.”
Sang Luo looked over the chat history; this was their first conversation. There was another possibility: the original owner had deleted previous records. Sang Luo directly asked for the identity of the person, but the other party did not reply. After waiting a while longer, there was still no message.
Sang Luo’s expression darkened. It seemed this person was not going to reply. He speculated about the identity but had no leads. At that moment, another message arrived, this time from Huo Xun.
“Xun: What show did you take on a few days ago?”
Sang Luo was surprised but replied anyway.
“Luo Ye: The Three Realms Where You Shine Brightest.”
The fourth male lead Sang Luo played was an emperor. The role followed the old cliché: I love you, you do not love me, ultimately ending in unrequited love and a fallen kingdom.
Huo Xun replied after a while.
“Xun: Be careful of the second male lead in that show.” “Xun: He likes to use other people for marketing tie-ins.”
Sang Luo found it amusing. Who would want a tie-in with an obscure, low-tier actor like him? However, Huo Xun sent him a screenshot. It was a photo of him with the caption: A very hardworking newcomer. As for who sent it, it was self-evident.
“Xun: The one he is targeting is you.” “Xun: I have already handled it. He was not very famous to begin with, so not many people saw it.”
Sang Luo: [Silent]
“Luo Ye: Thank you.”
“Xun: No need. It was just a small matter.”
Sang Luo stared at that sentence. Was that really the case?
Then, the San Dian Shui who had messaged him earlier interrupted his thoughts.
“San Dian Shui: Have you forgotten? We debuted at the same time and supported each other. Did you not say I was your best friend?”
In a flash of realization, Sang Luo thought of someone: the protagonist of this book. His memory of those details was blurry, so he could not be certain of the identity or motives of the person. Sang Luo did not reply. He planned to give the person the cold shoulder and see what they would do.
