- Chapter 24 - A Bad Premonition
The tail of that ferocious and aggressive jaguar drooped down as if it were greeting him in a friendly manner, showing an obvious sign of trying to please him.
Gu He walked over and touched the white fur on its head with his fingers. As if sensing something, the jaguar proactively rubbed its head against his palm, making soft noises from its nose, clearly currying favor with him.
At first glance, one might think Gu He was stroking a large kitten, though it was indeed a member of the feline family. However, he did not particularly care for such exquisite species; the texture of its fur felt no different from that of an ordinary stray cat.
Xie Jun caught his breath. “My goodness, please be careful.”
“Huh? Why is it so obedient now?” Xu Jijuan stared curiously while holding a bag of its rations. He marveled, “This young master is quite wild himself.”
Xie Jun watched the whiskers on the big cat’s mouth twitch and let out a mysterious hum. “Aura.”
“What aura?” Xu Jijuan tore open the packaging in his hand. Inside was dried meat that smelled quite fragrant; he wondered how it tasted.
“As if you do not understand?”
“Understand what?” Xu Jijuan looked completely dazed, wondering what he was supposed to know.
“Did your stepmother not teach you?” Xie Jun looked at him with an expression of disbelief.
Xu Jijuan pulled out a rectangular piece of jerky and poked it aggressively against Xie Jun’s chest. “Mention him again and I will kill you.”
“Oh, did you have a fight?” Xie Jun teased. “Are you coming to my place tonight?”
“I am far too noble for that.” The implication was: Are you even worthy?
Xu Jijuan rolled his eyes at him.
“If you are not going, then fine. Just do not come whimpering in the middle of the night asking me to open the door for you. By the way, give me back my card. I am going out for some nightlife tonight.” Xie Jun was tired of hearing his noble consort declarations.
Xu Jijuan muttered in disdain, “There is not much money left on your card; it is overdrawn.”
“Over? Overdrawn?” Xie Jun’s eyes widened. There should have been at least a few tens of thousands of dollars on that card. Knowing he had to compensate Xu Jijuan, he had intentionally left the remainder after transferring the rest of his funds. A few tens of thousands was not a small amount.
“Yes, I only had one meal.”
“What? One meal cost me over thirty thousand dollars? Xu Jijuan, did you eat platinum? Did you pass diamonds?” Xie Jun could not help but roar.
“Here, take it back. You are so stingy. It is not like I ate your wedding fund.”
“He actually thought about eating my wedding fund? I dare you to say that again!”
The two of them were like elementary schoolers fighting, determined to see who would win. It was incredibly childish. Their bickering was interrupted mid-way by an incoming call.
“Pause, pause. Let me take this.” Xie Jun hurriedly answered the phone, his attitude instantly doing a 180-degree turn.
“Seventh Master.”
“Where is he?” The air pressure on the other end was clearly terrifyingly low.
Xu Jijuan’s ear pressed against Xie Jun’s phone at some point. He took a bite of the jerky and cut in while chewing, “He is petting the jaguar.”
“Tell him to call me.”
The call ended with a series of beeps.
Xie Jun stood there speechless.
Xu Jijuan continued to chew the meat. Honestly, this jerky was quite chewy and delicious, though a bit bland.
When did their Seventh Master become so childish?
When He Yunqi’s words reached Gu He’s ears, he was also stunned. He had not received any calls.
He pulled out his phone only to realize it had automatically shut down because the battery died. See? These smartphones were not as useful as his old senior phone.
Xie Jun knew for certain that this time, it was not his fault.
“Seventh Master wants you to call him back.”
Gu He sighed silently. This was yet another annoying habit of the powerful and wealthy.
He lamented once again that his brick phone was better; this new thing drained its battery too quickly.
“Brother Xie, can I borrow your phone for a moment?”
Xie Jun immediately handed it over with both hands.
“Thank you,” Gu He said.
Once the call connected, the voice on the other end was irritable and impatient. “Do you not understand,”
“Seventh Master, it is me,” Gu He spoke up.
Xie Jun lifted his chin proudly, while Xu Jijuan tried his best to stifle a laugh beside him.
Hearing the voice, Gu He suddenly glanced over. The two men synchronized their movements, staring up at the sky at a forty-five-degree angle, mentally chanting, “You cannot see me, you cannot see me,” while their ears were practically stretching toward him.
“Mr. He, my phone died. I am sorry.”
There was a long silence on the other end before a voice said, “Baby, did you miss me?”
Without waiting for a reply, the man continued to himself, “I certainly missed you. I guess you missed me too; otherwise, why would you ask for my physical examination report?”
I asked for the report to see if you had any infectious diseases, man!
Earlier, Xie Jun had mentioned at some point that He Yunqi had brought up his medical report, which made Gu He’s heart skip a beat.
He took the opportunity to ask for the other man’s report. Xie Jun had been quite straightforward about it, smiling as he said the Seventh Master had already expected he would ask.
Gu He’s ears turned completely red. These phone calls were always full of explicit or mindless talk. He really wanted to hang up, provided it would not result in a pay cut.
“Do not hang up. I have some good news that might make you happy.” He Yunqi anticipated his next move.
Gu He’s fingers tightened around the phone. In the fading glow of the sunset, the blue veins on the back of his well-defined hand were tinged with a soft yellow. He heard some noise on the other end, the sound of waves and someone saying in broken Chinese to bring the person over and not to let the blood splatter on the floor.
“The man named Ding has been arrested by the Thai police.”
Gu He froze for a few seconds, though he quickly recovered his senses. It made sense. How could a man like He Yunqi not investigate the person staying by his side down to the very last detail? The warmth at his fingertips vanished inch by inch.
Gu He had never actually seen his father. It was said that his mother died due to a medical accident. According to relevant laws, when compensation for a dependent’s living expenses is paid due to a medical accident, if the dependent is under sixteen, they are supported until sixteen. Gu He was only eight years old that year.
But that unscrupulous doctor did not want to take responsibility and found someone to handle the matter. Gu He was mysteriously sold.
He was originally sold to the black market. Because he had congenital heart disease, he could not serve as a vessel to extend the lives of the wealthy, so he was decisively abandoned. Due to extreme malnutrition and organ failure, he could not pass a physical examination at all. He was then resold at a low price. After changing hands several times, he found himself adopted by a man called Uncle Ding.
Because of the frequent transactions and transfers, he never had the chance to seek help from the police. Everything stopped when he reached Thailand. He had initially thought he met a good person and could finally catch his breath. Uncle Ding was the head of a welfare organization that took in many homeless, abandoned, and stateless children.
But gradually, he noticed something was wrong. It seemed like something was being put into the food they ate every day. Gu He was naturally alert. Later, he discovered that they intended to train them as third gender entertainers to make money.
Uncle Ding thought Gu He was a good prospect and wanted to train him as an enforcer. After several years of training, Gu He managed to return on a ship during one of their private cargo transactions.
Later, relying on his faint memories, he found his old home, took the items that could prove his identity, and went to the police station to register a new identity. Only then did he escape those horrific and terrible memories.
