After Falling for the Handsome CEO - Chapter 37
Chapter 37: As If He Had Seen Him Long Ago
The call he placed was disconnected—
Shen Jin’s face turned ashen, as if his last remaining lifeline had been snatched away. The phone slipped powerlessly from his palm, hitting the floor with a dull thud. Immediately after, his vision went black, and his limp body collapsed onto the ground…
Time ticked away, second by second.
After Yan Yu finished feeding Xie Li his medicine, he tucked the quilt around him and said with a warm smile, “Now that you’ve taken your medicine, get some rest. That’s the only way to recover quickly. You have to keep yourself covered properly.”
“I’m not a child anymore, why are you treating me like one?” Xie Li gave a small laugh, nuzzling his head into the soft pillow. He pulled the quilt tighter, his eyes brimming with a smile. “Are you going back to your room to sleep now?”
He was slightly worried that once Yan Yu left the room, he wouldn’t be able to resist going to find Shen Jin…
“If there’s nothing particularly urgent, it’s better not to go out at night; it’s quite unsafe.” He stared at Yan Yu with wide, almond-shaped eyes and smiled nonchalantly. “Otherwise, I’ll just worry again…”
Yan Yu was stunned, feeling a sudden surge of warmth in his heart. He smiled and pinched Xie Li’s cheek, saying tenderly, “Don’t worry, I won’t go out tonight. How could I let you worry about me again? What if you fell ill a second time?”
Xie Li gave him a bright, innocent smile and snuggled back into the pillow.
Because Xie Li was sick, Yan Yu stayed by his side for a while after the medicine before returning to his own room. Upon leaving, Xie Li seemed a bit reluctant to see him go, which put Yan Yu in an excellent mood, feeling that their relationship had progressed another step.
Yet, for some reason, Shen Jin’s face and that disconnected phone call flashed through his mind…
Yan Yu dazed out for a moment, whispering to himself, “Nothing should be wrong…”
Given Shen Jin’s defiant attitude the night before, even if something were wrong, he shouldn’t be calling. So, what did that call earlier mean?
After thinking it over, his fingers rubbed against his phone. Driven by an inexplicable impulse, he dialed back—
A moment later, the phone rang, but no one answered.
Yan Yu let out a cold sneer and hung up immediately. He tossed the phone aside and lay back on his large, soft bed, saying mockingly, “He really thinks he’s someone important…”
This was the several times now that he had called Shen Jin and received no answer. Preposterous… in the past, among those he played around with, who would dare act like this?
Therefore, he had no intention of following up further.
…
At 8:30 PM, Bai Yujin was at home playing with his younger sister, Bai Mu. He was getting a bit puzzled because Shen Jin still hadn’t arrived.
He pinched his sister’s cheek and asked with a smile, “What time does your Brother Shen Jin usually get here?”
“Seven o’clock,” his sister replied. “He’s very punctual. Then he leaves around nine or shortly after. But today is so strange; he hasn’t shown up at all. Usually, if he’s busy, he calls.”
The hand Bai Yujin was using to play with a ball stiffened. He caught the ball, pulled his phone from his pocket, quickly found a familiar name, and smiled. “I’ll give him a call and ask. Maybe he really did run into something.”
When he called Shen Jin several times and no one picked up, Bai Yujin’s expression finally turned grim.
Seeing her brother hang up, grab a coat, and rush out the door without explanation, Bai Mu was stunned. “Brother, what are you doing? Didn’t you say you were staying home today and not going back to your villa!”
“I’ll be right back,” Bai Yujin replied briefly. He immediately drove off, speeding away toward the east end.
When he reached Shen Jin’s residence and saw it was pitch black inside, his heart sank. He rushed to the door and pounded on it. “Shen Jin? Are you home? If you are, answer me!”
After calling several times with no response, a sense of dread filled Bai Yujin. He hurriedly called the landlord, rushed to get the key from her, and burst inside—
When he used his phone light to find the switch and turned on the lights, he saw a person collapsed on the floor, drenched in sweat as if pulled from a river. He was shivering violently, his face ashen and his lips purple…
Bai Yujin’s face went pale instantly as he cried out, “Shen Jin!”
He rushed to Shen Jin’s side and knelt. Ignoring the cold sweat soaking the man’s clothes, he hurriedly wrapped a coat around him and lifted him up. “It’s okay, it’s okay. We’re going to the hospital right now!”
Frantic with worry, Bai Yujin carried the lifeless body toward his car. A chill ran through his own heart, and fearing Shen Jin was scared, he kept comforting him. “It’s okay, it’s okay. You’ll be fine in a moment, just a little longer!”
The unconscious man, of course, could not respond. He only felt his frozen, stiff body receive a touch of warmth—a warmth that made Shen Jin want to weep…
While putting him in the car, Bai Yujin called the hospital to register him in advance. He then sped toward the hospital without a second’s delay.
Once they arrived and Shen Jin was moved into a ward for an examination and an IV drip, the anxious Bai Yujin finally breathed a sigh of relief outside the room, stumbling into a nearby chair.
He covered his pale face with both hands and rubbed vigorously, exhaling softly. “That scared me to death…”
A doctor standing nearby smiled. “It’s a good thing you brought him in quickly, otherwise the consequences would be unthinkable. If he had remained unconscious much longer, it would have been life-threatening.”
The doctor then frowned slightly. “But if I may ask, did the patient suffer a serious injury as a child? Specifically to the head?”
Bai Yujin was taken aback. “Why do you ask?”
He knew nothing about this. Shen Jin had never mentioned it; he only knew Shen Jin grew up in an orphanage and relied on his sister. Everything else was a blank.
The doctor explained, “During the examination, we found evidence of past cranial trauma. It seems his past memories were suddenly cut off. This high fever stimulated the brain, creating a certain effect. There is hope for him to recover those memories in the future.”
Bai Yujin was completely confused and didn’t quite understand the medical implications. He simply nodded, thanked the doctor a few times, and hurried into Shen Jin’s ward to sit by his side.
He sighed softly. “Why are you so foolish?”
The person on the bed was pale and bloodless, sleeping peacefully. He had features as delicate as a painting—long eyelashes casting fan-shaped shadows on his eyelids, and a straight nose above thin lips pressed lightly together…
Bai Yujin dazed out slightly.
For a split second, he had a strange illusion—as if he had seen this person somewhere, a long, long time ago…
