- Chapter 2 - The Unreliable Childhood Friend
When Ning Ke opened her eyes again and saw the snow-white ceiling, she once believed for a moment that she had truly arrived in heaven.
Immediately after, she heard the system’s unromantic notification. “Target character Fan Qingyin’s favorability has increased by 10. Successfully exchanged for 20 hours of lifespan. Please keep up the good work, Host.”
Reacting half a beat late, Ning Ke finally processed the words: “What? I actually didn’t die?! But… where did this favorability come from?”
Immense joy and bewilderment enveloped Ning Ke at the same time. Seeing her dazed expression, the system proactively and considerately chimed in: “Respected Host, you were indeed on the brink of death earlier…”
Ning Ke: “…You don’t need to emphasize that.”
Bringing up the exact thing she didn’t want to hear, this system definitely had some sort of personal grievance against her!
The system smoothly corrected itself. “Understood, Host. After you fainted, the target Fan Qingyin’s favorability increased by 10, so the system automatically exchanged it for 20 hours of lifespan for you.”
The bizarre twist in the system’s words made Ning Ke freeze, taking quite a while to fully wrap her head around it.
So, it turned out Fan Qingyin’s favorability only increased because she wanted to see Ning Ke suffer?
Ning Ke felt as though she had discovered something extraordinary.
However, before she could delve deeper into her thoughts, the hospital room door was suddenly pushed open. A tall woman was directing several people to bring things inside. They moved in and out, quickly filling up the room, leaving Ning Ke completely dumbfounded.
As the final large container was brought forward, even though the lid hadn’t been opened yet, the rich aroma of food filled the entire ward.
Having sorted everything out, the woman turned around and glanced at Ning Ke, who was still in a daze. She frowned instantly, “What are you staring for? Aren’t you hungry? Or did Fan Qingyin actually beat you stupid?”
The familiarity in the woman’s tone was unmistakable. Ning Ke quickly searched her memory for relevant keywords, paused for a moment, and tentatively called out. “Yang Xu?”
“What a miracle.” Yang Xu walked over as if she were looking at a rare animal, clicking her tongue in wonder, “Could it be that you really were beaten stupid by Fan Qingyin?”
Yang Xu was the original owner’s childhood friend. Her personality was cut from the exact same cloth, frivolous, unrestrained, and equally scum like. Otherwise, how could the two of them have become childhood friends?
With the spoiled and ruined nature of the original owner, to put it bluntly, she was universally detested. Anyone whose brain didn’t operate on the same wavelength simply couldn’t understand her malicious sense of amusement.
Yet, the Ning family held immense power in the Imperial Capital, with connections spanning both political and business sectors, so no one could really do anything to her. As the youngest child of the Ning family, Ning Ke had three older brothers. She had been pampered since childhood, and whenever she caused trouble, someone was always there to clean up her mess. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have grown into such a scum Alpha.
After running through the relevant information in her mind, Ning Ke felt a bit more grounded. Looking up, she realized Yang Xu was still staring at her.
Ning Ke paused, an inexplicable wave of guilt washing over her. Forcing herself to look calm, she spoke up. “Why are you staring at me? Where is Fan Qingyin? Why am I in the hospital?”
Although she remembered fainting, it shouldn’t have been serious enough to warrant being sent to the hospital, right? Speaking of being hospitalized, given Fan Qingyin’s condition, she was the one who should be staying here. Induced heat causes immense damage to an Omega’s body.
To her surprise, upon hearing this, Yang Xu burst out laughing. “You still have the nerve to bring up Fan Qingyin? Do you know your lifelong reputation has been completely ruined?”
“An Alpha beaten unconscious into the hospital by an Omega, honestly, Ning Ke, you’re the absolute only one in our social circle.”
Yang Xu shook her head and sighed as she spoke, not forgetting to comment on the root cause of the incident. “But honestly, forcing an Omega into heat is indeed a pretty underhanded move on your part. It wasn’t human behavior.”
Only then did Ning Ke realize that things had blown completely out of proportion. Even Yang Xu knew about it, which meant Fan Qingyin must have laid her cards on the table directly with the Ning family.
Otherwise, it wouldn’t have escalated to Yang Xu’s ears.
Thinking of this, Ning Ke couldn’t help but sigh. Seeing her looking so dejected, Yang Xu shut her mouth and proactively called out to her again: “Forget it, forget it. You just woke up, why bother thinking about this?”
“Come, come, come, take a look at the food I brought you. How does it look? …Here, look, does it tempt you?”
Yang Xu took a step back and waved her hand grandly toward the thermal containers stacked behind her. Her sweeping gesture carried the majestic aura of “behold the empire I have conquered,” which immediately gave Ning Ke a headache.
Who brings food like this? As expected, she was just as much of a spendthrift as the original owner.
Unaware of Ning Ke’s internal criticism and seeing that her complexion hadn’t improved at all, Yang Xu scratched her head in annoyance, asking with sincere concern. “Your brain didn’t really get broken, did it?”
Ning Ke rolled her eyes and snapped at her. “No one will think you’re a mute if you keep your mouth shut.”
Hearing this, Yang Xu actually looked relieved instead. “Good, it seems you’re fine. At least you still know how to snap at people.”
Ning Ke didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. After a moment of thought, she decided not to keep Yang Xu in the dark anymore. After all, an extra person meant an extra pair of hands. What if Yang Xu could actually think of a way to coax someone?
“Ah Xu, tell me, how should I coax Fan Qingyin to change her mind and live a proper life with me?”
“Coax her? Why do you need to coax her?” Hearing this, Yang Xu was shocked and spoke instinctively. “Isn’t Fan Qingyin just in the next ward? Just tie her back directly and force her into submission, wouldn’t that fix it?”
What a textbook, scummy Alpha statement.
Ning Ke covered her face, unable to look. Holding onto a final shred of hope, she raised her head. “But didn’t you just say that forcing an Omega into heat isn’t human behavior?”
Yang Xu’s expression was utterly matter of fact. “So what if it’s not human behavior? It’s not like it’s our first day failing to act like decent humans.”
…So you weren’t actually standing up for Fan Qingyin earlier?!
And why on earth do you sound so proud when talking about this kind of thing! You lack morals, do you know that!
Speechless, the veins on Ning Ke’s forehead throbbed with pain. She could only take a deep breath. “Forget it, get lost.”
Finding herself suddenly yelled at without warning, Yang Xu looked completely baffled. “Why are you suddenly kicking me out?”
“I get annoyed looking at you.” Ning Ke lifted a pillow toward her, “Are you leaving or what?”
“Fine, fine, fine, I’m going, I’m going.”
Ning Ke lowered the pillow and took a deep breath. However, before she could fully relax, Yang Xu’s head suddenly popped back out from the corner. “Then I’ll just assume you’re keeping all this food?”
Ning Ke silently picked up the pillow again.
“I’m gone, I’m gone, for real this time!”
Ning Ke breathed a sigh of relief. Without Yang Xu messing around beside her, it was indeed much quieter.
At the same time, she pondered over things, feeling that she hadn’t made any unpardonable mistakes yesterday, so there should still be a chance to make amends… right?
Ning Ke paused, inexplicably remembering the two punches Fan Qingyin had delivered. Although rationally she should be fine by now, for some reason, her heart still throbbed with a faint, lingering pain.
Rubbing her chest a couple of times, Ning Ke glanced at the IV drip beside her.
During the brief moment of solitary contemplation after Yang Xu left, a nurse had come in midway to change her IV bottle.
Ning Ke found it a bit strange. Upon asking, she found out that her eldest brother felt that her being knocked unconscious by an Omega as an Alpha was due to her body being too weak.
“How can an Alpha’s body be this weak? She needs to replenish her nutrients.” Those were the eldest brother’s exact words. Ignoring the objections of the second brother, who was a doctor, he ordered the hospital to add several more bottles of IV drip for Ning Ke.
Ning Ke knew her eldest brother had a rigid and stubborn personality, but she hadn’t expected herself to become his next victim.
Her second brother was a doctor, but because he was a Beta, he wasn’t given much authority. Having his opinions ignored by the eldest brother was a common occurrence, so he could only silently reduce a few of the extra bottles for Ning Ke behind his back.
When the nurse reached this point, she didn’t forget to remind Ning Ke. “Dean Ning said that before you finish these IV fluids, you are not allowed to go anywhere. You must rest in bed.”
Ning Ke immediately understood. The person in charge of this hospital must be her second brother, otherwise the nurse wouldn’t have spoken this way.
Looking at the newly replaced bottle, she suddenly felt a wave of anxiety. Her lifespan was ticking away faster and faster, and the system was still running its countdown in her ear, notifying her of how many hours she had left.
Yet, she couldn’t even leave the hospital room, forced to watch time slip away minute by minute… Wasn’t this just asking for her life?
