- Chapter 20 - Sinking Into the Beautiful Illusion
Chi Ling merely shrunk a little further into Ming Tang’s embrace.
Unable to catch exactly what she murmured, Ming Tang simply tightened her grip instinctively, pulling the soft-boned, melting Chi Ling closer into her arms.
Ming Tang released the hand she had previously used to pin Chi Ling down, shifting to lift her up horizontally in a princess carry.
Too thin, Ming Tang thought.
She had rushed straight over right after finishing dance practice, without even a moment to catch her breath, only to be dragged into this beautiful, intoxicating illusion from which there was no self-rescue. Managing both Chi Ling’s condition and her own had already left her somewhat exhausted, yet lifting Chi Ling now required zero effort.
Fortunately, the dorm arrangements weren’t bunk beds or loft beds with desks underneath, otherwise, by Ming Tang’s strength alone, she truly wouldn’t have been able to tuck Chi Ling into bed so smoothly.
After tucking in the corners of the blanket for Chi Ling, Ming Tang suppressed her primal instincts. She bit down hard on the tip of her tongue with her sharp canine teeth, using the sharp sting of pain to keep herself conscious.
She had never tested her pheromone compatibility with an Omega before. But every time she was ensnared by Chi Ling’s pheromones or even when she just thought of that thread like, faint, clean fragrance, she would find it nearly impossible to curb her emotions and instincts.
Since her differentiation, it wasn’t as though she hadn’t encountered other Omegas experiencing sudden heat periods.
Yet, when she ran into Nie Wenyu’s rich, dense pheromones, her body’s instincts would react with aversion before her mind even could.
Therefore, her pheromone compatibility with Chi Ling was definitely not low.
“Chi Ling?” Ming Tang gripped Chi Ling’s wrist through the blanket, asking in a low, strained voice, “Where is your suppressant?”
Chi Ling shrank a bit further into the blanket, as if she finally understood Ming Tang’s question. She turned on her side, revealing only a small half of her face. Her eyelids fluttered upward, opening those moist, shimmering eyes to look at Ming Tang.
“…I don’t want to take the shot anymore,” Chi Ling’s voice carried that same soft quality from earlier, and now, muffled by the blanket, it sounded somewhat heavy.
“Then what are you going to do next?” Ming Tang instinctively raised her hand, her fingertips touching the gland at the back of her own neck. Due to frequent use and the forceful crushing from suppressants over the past few days, the gland was already starting to swell faintly.
“I think… it’s almost over for me…” Chi Ling’s voice grew lighter and lighter. She had finally processed what had just happened, realizing how incredibly alluring her previous words and actions had been.
Listening to her slow, weary, and lazy tone, Ming Tang’s parched throat swallowed instinctively. It took a good while before she could manage to speak. “Then what about a scent blocking patch? Do you still need one?”
Chi Ling shook her head, her bangs swaying slightly with the movement.
“Okay,” Ming Tang understood. She lowered her gaze and repeated her previous question in a raspy voice, “Then you’ll stay in the dorm this afternoon, right? That way, you’ll have the energy for tomorrow’s MV shoot.”
“Mm.” Chi Ling nodded this time, and that single tuft of sticking-up bangs nodded up and down along with her.
“Today… I troubled you too much,” Chi Ling added after a brief pause, “Thank you.”
Having said that, as if struck by embarrassment, Chi Ling pulled the blanket directly over her head. She completely hid that little tuft of hair that had been rocking back and forth to express her inner thoughts.
“It’s fine, no need to be so formal with me.” Ming Tang’s throat was dry and tight, her remaining shred of sanity told her that she needed to leave immediately. “I’ll be going now. Get some good rest.”
Almost the exact moment the final word left her lips, Ming Tang bolted straight for the dorm door.
Chi Ling’s voice saying goodbye was very faint, but Ming Tang couldn’t tell if it was because she herself was fleeing too quickly, or because Chi Ling was too physically weak to speak any louder.
The moment she closed the door behind her, Ming Tang felt as though she had just been dragged out of the ocean and onto dry land; even the surrounding air suddenly felt lighter.
Leaning against the doorframe now, a wave of dizziness hit Ming Tang in flashes. Her body felt as if a fire had been lit inside, greedily spreading a scalding, tingling numbness from her lower abdomen all the way up to her throat.
If she collapsed right outside someone else’s dorm door, being embarrassed would be the least of her problems. If she succumbed to the allure of the pheromones and let her instincts drive her to do something to Chi Ling… Ming Tang didn’t dare to think any further.
She abruptly let go of the doorframe, turned around, and walked down the stairs with light, unsteady steps. Her sharp teeth bit into her tongue once more, relying on the sharp pain to keep the world before her eyes stable and clear.
Her well-defined fingers gripped the stainless steel handrail of the staircase tightly, her fingertips losing color from the sheer force of her grip.
Ming Tang staggered her way down from the top floor. Fortunately, there was absolutely no one else in the dorm building at this hour, no one would witness her wretched state.
When Ming Tang finally returned to her own dorm, she practically collapsed into the room.
Along the way, her sole remaining thought was a lingering fear, she shouldn’t have forgotten to take a preventative suppressant shot in advance.
The suppressants were kept in the desk drawer facing the foot of her bed.
Ming Tang frantically rummaged through and pulled one out, her trembling hands tearing the packaging open with brute force.
It really is different, Ming Tang thought in her dazed, chaotic state.
Chi Ling’s heat made her weak and delicate, whereas her own triggered state only made her volatile and irritable.
The needle pierced her skin, and as the cold liquid was injected, Ming Tang couldn’t suppress a sudden, sharp acceleration in her breathing.
After a few heavy gasps, the empty syringe slipped from her loosened grip, hitting the floor with a crisp clatter before rolling over and stopping against the wall.
Slumped over the desk, Ming Tang pressed her forehead against her arm. She closed her eyes, unsure of how long she rested before she finally took a long, deep breath. Only when the air completely filled her lungs did she slowly exhale.
Ming Tang leaned down to pick up the empty packaging from under the desk. She cast a glance into the wide open drawer, this was already the very last suppressant she had brought with her.
“How did I use them up so fast…” Ming Tang murmured in a low voice.
There was still a week left before her own rut, and judging by what Chi Ling said, her irregular heat period should be over. This meant Ming Tang likely wouldn’t need suppressants for the time being.
According to the show’s schedule, right after the theme song MV recording finished, they would immediately move on to shooting the official profile photos in their show uniforms. After that, over the weekend, they would get a two days break.
According to rumors, as long as they reported it to the production team in advance, the trainees participating in Moment of Destiny were allowed to leave the training base for a brief “breather.”
She could take that opportunity to visit a hospital and stock up on new ones.
Ming Tang looked down at the empty casing in her hand, feeling a pang of financial pain.
Since it’s a daily necessity, can’t they bring the price of suppressants down?
Moreover, her physique was quite unique compared to other Alphas. While it wasn’t severe enough to cause irregular ruts, the standard, commercially available suppressants truly couldn’t do much for her.
It was the violent clash of hormones within her body that had caused her to fall into a coma during her differentiation, leaving her hospitalized for a full seven days before waking up.
Those turbulent hormones gave her a much higher tolerance threshold for suppressants than normal people, to the point where widely circulated suppressants had an almost negligible effect on her.
This was the diagnosis given by the Differentiation Department during her hospitalization.
Ming Tang let out a long, melancholic sigh and went to the bathroom to splash water on her face. The self reflected in the mirror actually looked a bit haggard.
She rubbed her face vigorously until a flush of color slowly returned to her cheeks, making her complexion look a bit healthier.
“Ming Tang, you absolutely cannot slack off,” Ming Tang muttered softly to her reflection in the mirror. “You have to work just a little bit harder to keep standing right by Chi Ling’s side.”
