After Breaking Up With The Wealthy Heiress - Chapter 7
Chapter 7
It was a quarter to midnight when Tan Yunshu arrived at the bar where Shen Yingzhi was hosting a gathering tonight.
This bar was a casual investment Liang Pei had made two years ago. Located in the heart of the city, the location was excellent, and with its strong decor and business style, the return on investment was high. In just two years, it had become a popular “influencer” bar, drawing crowds of people eager to check it out.
For many, it wasn’t too late yet. As for tomorrow’s work it was easily tossed to the back of their minds under the numbing influence of alcohol. All that mattered was the present.
The lights inside the bar were hazy and treacherous, cutting through everyone’s line of sight. The heavy metal music beat with a powerful rhythm, pulling people into a slow descent. The air was a mix of various scents, both pleasant and pungent.
Tan Yunshu walked straight to a VIP booth on the second floor. The soundproofing here was superior, and the high-end furnishings offered a completely different experience from the chaos outside.
The glasses on the coffee table were mostly empty, the remaining dregs colorful and brilliant. Shen Yingzhi had cleared the area; she was the only one in the booth. Seeing Tan Yunshu enter, she propped her eyelids open and said mockingly:
“Let me see who’s arrived!” “Oh my! Isn’t this the Miss Tan who said she’d be here ‘in a bit’?”
Tan Yunshu sat down beside her, shot her a look, and smiled. “Stop being so sarcastic.”
“Then what were you doing?” Shen Yingzhi leaned back on the sofa. She had had several drinks and was now slightly tipsy. She stared straight at Tan Yunshu, questioning her: “An hour! Tan Yunshu! Since when did your ‘in a bit’ become so long?”
“I went to find my ‘white moonlight.’ How’s that? Satisfied with that answer?”
“Pfft.”
Shen Yingzhi clearly didn’t believe her. She let out a lazy yawn, her voice sounding a bit nasally. “I can’t do this. I think I’m sleepy. What’s wrong with me? I’m only 21, and it’s not even midnight. I used to pull multiple all-nighters for design blueprints without feeling tired…”
While Shen Yingzhi rambled on, Tan Yunshu stood up to grab a bottle of room-temperature mineral water from a shelf. To protect her throat, she rarely drank alcohol or cold beverages. She took two sips of the water, feeling the sensation of Fang Yu licking her lips finally fade a little.
But thinking of Fang Yu made her laugh out of sheer frustration. Did that person think she was so easy to coax? In Fang Yu’s eyes, had she become a cat that would stop being angry as long as she was fed a cat treat?
“Yunshu.” Shen Yingzhi called her back to reality.
Tan Yunshu dismissed her thoughts, screwed the cap back on, and responded softly, “What is it?”
“My flight is at 4:00 PM tomorrow. Take me to the airport.”
“Alright.”
Shen Yingzhi rubbed her brow. The alcohol was starting to hit her, but she still sensed Tan Yunshu’s low mood. She couldn’t help but ask, “Why do you seem so unhappy?”
“Because you’re going back tomorrow,” Tan Yunshu fabricated an excuse.
Shen Yingzhi: “Awwwww~~~” She laughed loudly. “Then should I stay a few more days?”
“Sure.”
Just as she spoke, Tan Yunshu’s phone screen lit up with an Alipay notification. A person named “fy” had transferred three hundred yuan to her.
Tan Yunshu stared at the notification, her frown deepening. A few seconds later, she received a WeChat message from Fang Yu. She had changed the contact name to “Xiao Yu” just that afternoon; before that, it had simply been “Fang Yu.”
Xiao Yu: Transferred the room fee to you.
Tan Yunshu didn’t reply. She locked her screen, eyes lowered, gripping the phone a bit too tightly. The black screen reflected her dark expression.
Because the hotel was very close to the firm, Fang Yu slept until 8:20 AM. The non-stop work had left her physically and mentally exhausted; she didn’t have the energy to guess what Tan Yunshu was thinking. She had fallen asleep immediately after showering last night.
When she woke up, she saw that Tan Yunshu hadn’t replied to her transfer message. But Tan Yunshu didn’t need to reply, because this was a notification, not a request. Since Tan Yunshu hadn’t stayed the night, it was only right that Fang Yu bear the room fee alone. However, since it hadn’t even been twelve hours since check-in, she felt the money was a bit wasted.
But it didn’t matter. It was rare for her to splurge like this. Fang Yu didn’t let herself get too tense; besides, sleeping there had been truly comfortable. She hadn’t been woken up once.
Fang Qin, a habitual early riser, had replied to her message from last night at 7:00 AM. As expected, her mother didn’t mind her not coming home on short notice. In Fang Qin’s eyes, her daughter was always honest and sensible as long as she stayed safe, it was fine. Her reply reflected exactly that. At the end, she asked if Fang Yu was coming home for dinner tonight.
Fang Yu: I’m having dinner with a friend, then I’ll be back.
Fang Qin replied instantly, sounding like she was sighing: It’s not like we don’t have rice and noodles at home. Why eat out again?
Fang Yu: She helped me out.
Fang Qin’s attitude changed immediately: I’ll give you some money. Is a hundred yuan enough?
I have money. Fang Yu said, [I’m getting paid for the part-time job this afternoon. Don’t worry.
Looking at the messages with her mother, Fang Yu felt a mix of emotions. Her family’s situation hadn’t always been like this. Back then, they weren’t rich, but her parents worked hard and her grandparents were still able-bodied, so life was relatively easy. On the way home from school, she could still take out a yuan to buy two bags of spicy strips from the snack shop.
The turning point came during the summer after primary school. Her father was riding a motorcycle when he was struck by a rare mountain rockfall; he died on the spot. Because of the shock, her grandparents fell seriously ill and still required care today, with expensive medical bills that never seemed to end. Since then, the household had been supported solely by her mother.
Fortunately, she was grown now and could make things a little easier for her mom, even if her current ability was still far from enough. Recalling this, Fang Yu let out a breath and stopped dwelling. She got up to wash and head to the firm.
At 3:00 PM, Sister Jiao sent her the performance spreadsheet for the promotion. Every order was recorded clearly the sales amount and the commission. The most eye-catching entry was the set of lipsticks Tan Yunshu had bought. That single order totaled 16,544 yuan, and her 5% commission came to 827.2 yuan.
Combined with her daily base pay of 310 yuan, Fang Yu’s three-day part-time job earned her nearly 3,300 yuan.
Sister Jiao: Keep it up, Xiao Yu.] [Thank you, Sister Jiao, for giving me this opportunity. Fang Yu was very grateful. Sister Jiao looked out for her; while these part-time jobs were tiring, the spots were limited, yet Sister Jiao always saved a place for her over the past three years.
Sister Jiao: No need to be polite. Let’s work together next time. Okay!
Fang Yu looked at the spreadsheet twice more, her smile stiffening. That 827.2 yuan wasn’t money she should be taking. If the thin man had bought that much, she would have accepted it with a clear conscience. But that wasn’t the case here.
She had seen Tan Yunshu’s lipstick collection full of various high-end brands in beautiful shades that suited her face. The beauty brand she was working for was just a rising star from the last two years, nowhere near the quality of what Tan Yunshu usually used.
So why did Tan Yunshu buy them? There was only one answer: because of her.
Undoubtedly, this order felt like a burden to Fang Yu. The financial gap between them was immense, and it wasn’t something her part-time jobs could bridge. Since entering this ambiguous relationship with Tan Yunshu, she hadn’t taken advantage of her wealth just like she had transferred the room fee last night.
After a while, Fang Yu pinched the bridge of her nose and decided to ask about it the next time they met. But when would that be? Fang Yu didn’t know.
Three hours later, Fang Yu finished work and caught the subway to the Malatang shop Mengmeng had mentioned. The subway was packed and noisy. Standing in a corner, she opened her Moments and saw a post Tan Yunshu had made just minutes ago.
Tan Yunshu: People with low alcohol tolerance should still drink less.
Below were several photos. They all involved the strikingly beautiful girl. Fang Yu still didn’t know her name, but she had seen her at the booth yesterday afternoon; she was even prettier in person than in photos.
Among the pictures Tan Yunshu posted, one caught all of Fang Yu’s attention:
It was a candid shot Tan Yunshu had taken of the girl leaning on her shoulder. The girl looked a bit drunk, eyes peacefully closed, while her hand was clasped with Tan Yunshu’s their fingers were tightly intertwined.
It was a beautiful picture.
The subway sped along the tracks, the roar of the air piercing her eardrums. Looking at the photo, Fang Yu felt like she couldn’t breathe. It felt as though her heart were being torn.
Tan Yunshu wouldn’t date before graduation, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t hold someone else’s hand. From start to finish, it seemed that who she was didn’t really matter. It was Fang Yu who had made Tan Yunshu too important.
Tan Yunshu didn’t even know if Fang Yu would see her Moments. Over the past three years, she had posted many updates, but Fang Yu had never “liked” or commented on a single one.
But to make Fang Yu realize her mistake, she had posted this set of photos and this time, they were visible only to Fang Yu. She had even specifically chosen the time after Fang Yu finished work.
What was Fang Yu doing now? Was she on her way to eat Malatang? Tan Yunshu stared at her chat window with Fang Yu, her brow furrowed.
She didn’t wait in vain. After a while, she saw “Xiao Yu” change to “Typing…”, and a few seconds later, Fang Yu’s message arrived:
Tan Yunshu, I don’t want to continue this anymore.
