Chapter 52: Life and Death on the Line – Recognizing True Feelings
Xu Yinyu’s first sensation upon regaining consciousness was darkness. When her eyes opened, it was pitch black. She shook her head; her cheek scraped against gravel, and her eyes were bound with a piece of black cloth.
Around her were the sounds of hurried, chaotic footsteps.
The footsteps suddenly stopped, then moved closer and closer to Xu Yinyu. Someone was approaching.
The slight movement just now must have attracted the attention of her kidnapper.
Xu Yinyu struggled, only to find that her hands and feet were tied with rope, making her squirm like a long, worm-like creature.
More than one person came. The faint tapping of high heels mixed with the soft shuffling of several flat shoes.
Xu Yinyu’s jaw was clamped by the person who approached. Her shoulders were dragged up, one by a person on the left and one on the right. But because of the ropes and the blindfold, Xu Yinyu couldn’t even see the kidnapper’s appearance. Her heart trembled, but she knew that fear was useless right now.
“Who, who are you?”
Xu Yinyu’s throat felt sticky, and her voice trembled at the end due to the remaining effects of the anesthetic and her anxiety about the unknown.
The kidnapper seemed to be in a good mood, tracing Xu Yinyu’s profile with sharp fingernails before abruptly tearing off the black cloth over Xu Yinyu’s eyes. “Xu Yinyu, it’s been a long time.”
Xu Yinyu opened her eyes, her pupils contracting.
In the abandoned garage, every move kicked up dust that had settled. Several well-trained bodyguards surrounded a young lady adorned with jewelry, a stark contrast to the environment.
“Su Qingqing?” Xu Yinyu recognized the socialite, the woman she had slapped at the party where she and Yu Shujin reunited.
She had indeed offended this person and couldn’t believe the other party still remembered that slap.
Su Qingqing’s eyes instantly turned malicious, her pretty features twisted with viciousness. She raised her hand and brought it down hard.
Xu Yinyu’s face was violently struck. For a moment, Su Qingqing’s face blurred. Many past memories flashed through her mind like a slideshow; Yu Shujin’s face appeared once more.
It seemed to be pouring rain outside. In a flash of lightning, a pale light illuminated Su Qingqing’s face, making her look like a demon about to descend into hell.
Blood spilled from Xu Yinyu’s lips, and a sickly sweet taste rose in her throat.
Su Qingqing approached Xu Yinyu as if appreciating a perfect work of art, then feigned composure. “Do you know why I hit you?”
Xu Yinyu shook her head. She spat the blood-tinged saliva in her mouth onto Su Qingqing’s face and laughed heartily.
Su Qingqing’s composure shattered in that instant. She kicked Xu Yinyu fiercely in the abdomen, causing Xu Yinyu to collapse onto the floor, gasping. “M-mad, lunatic…”
Su Qingqing sneered. “Lunatic? Yu Shujin is the lunatic. Yu Shujin is a maniac who should be locked up in a mental asylum. Just because my sister and I had a conflict with you two years ago, Yu Shujin acted like a rabid dog that smelled blood, relentlessly pressuring and exposing the Su family until we vanished from A-City. Then, she crushed my sister’s most important career, leaving her with nothing.
Xu Yinyu, tell me, does Yu Shujin deserve to die!
But I am certainly not as powerful as Yu Shujin. I can’t get close to her, so I can’t avenge my sister. But it doesn’t matter now. I’ve kidnapped the person she cares about most.”
Her bright, round almond eyes now fixed intently on Xu Yinyu. “I believe you can help me make Yu Shujin suffer a fate worse than death.”
The color drained from Xu Yinyu’s face. She looked like a cold, battered statue, covered in visible cracks. “What do you want to do?”
Panic grew rampant in her heart like weeds.
Su Qingqing looked coldly at Xu Yinyu’s futile struggle. “I want revenge for my sister.”
Xu Yinyu struggled hard to break free from the ropes binding her hands, but because the rope was thin and tough, her wrists were exhausted, yet the rope remained unbroken.
“Stop wasting your time. The rope tying you is specially made and tied in a death knot. Even with a knife, it would take half an hour to saw through,” Su Qingqing had lost the patience to drag out the conversation with Xu Yinyu. She was already anticipating the sight of Yu Shujin’s near-death expression. “Just go happily. I won’t let you suffer.”
A metal blade was pressed against Xu Yinyu’s heart. Xu Yinyu’s breathing instantly froze.
Many scattered images flashed before her eyes. The last one was Yu Shujin’s retreating back after receiving the divorce certificate.
Xu Yinyu wondered with a blank mind, Will Yu Shujin even claim my body?
“Bang!”
Xu Yinyu felt hot blood spray onto her face, blurring her vision. When she opened her eyes again, the world was tinted with a bloody red filter.
Following the sound came the blare of police sirens.
Su Qingqing was panicked. She saw Xu Yinyu at her feet and quickly dragged her up to use her as a human shield.
Yu Shujin, clad in black rain gear, ran in from the downpour, followed by a group of police officers.
Su Qingqing held the dagger against Xu Yinyu’s fragile neck. “Yu Shujin, you actually detected my intention, but you can’t stop me! Hahahahaha!”
Xu Yinyu looked at Yu Shujin with the faint moonlight. She managed a weak smile. Being able to see the person she loved most in her last moments, she felt luckier than most.
Yu Shujin adjusted her emotions almost instantly. “Su Qingqing, yes, I can’t stop you now. But if you dare to harm even a single hair on Xu Yinyu, I will stake my own life to ensure Su Baili dies without a grave.”
Su Qingqing was momentarily stunned by Yu Shujin’s demonic, sinister, and obsessive gaze. She dared not doubt the words of this ruthless woman. It was because of her that the Su family fell, and her sister’s reputation was ruined. Her elegant hands, once used for painting, were now calloused, earned just to scrape together money for a new handbag, and she had almost sold her blood. If Su Qingqing hadn’t returned home in time to find and stop her…
“You…” Su Qingqing’s eyes were red. Her face was contorted with anger. “Then I want you to cut off your right hand.”
Yu Shujin’s expression was so dark it could drip water. She rarely felt this powerless. Ever since she was kidnapped at seventeen and then negotiated with Yu Zhenmin to start managing the Yu family, she had gained authority in many matters and thought the feeling of being constrained by others would vanish completely from her world.
But at this moment, even though she possessed A-City’s most remarkable business assets, seeing the person she loved kidnapped because of her, facing a life-or-death situation, she felt like a seventeen-year-old girl again.
Su Qingqing saw her stillness and moved the knife pressed against Xu Yinyu’s neck forward slightly. A trace of blood instantly seeped onto the pale skin. She said with malice, “If you don’t cut it, don’t blame me.”
Cold sweat poured from Xu Yinyu. She wanted to shake her head. “Don’t do this, Su Qingqing. Think about it. Is it worth sacrificing your and Su Baili’s future for Yu Shujin?” She was trembling with fear. She couldn’t bear to watch Yu Shujin actually… She would hate herself forever.
Su Qingqing showed a crazy smile. “It’s worth it, of course it’s worth it! As a notorious joke and a pretty face, if I can drag down Yu Shujin, a once-in-a-century business genius, I’ve won big time.”
Su Qingqing laughed wildly, but her eyes narrowed sharply, as if she had seen the last person she should have seen. Her face paled as she tried to stop her. “Sister, don’t come over.”
Su Baili, guided by Chi Xia, watched Su Qingqing with wide, disbelieving eyes. She pushed past the police line and walked toward Su Qingqing. “A-Qing, the Su family has fallen, but you still have your sister. And your sister still has you.”
Su Qingqing shook her head. “Sister, go back quickly.”
Xu Yinyu looked at Su Baili. The refined and beautiful celebrity painter from two years ago was now wearing simple work clothes, her face thin and bloodless, with visible scars on her body. No trace of her former arrogance and rudeness could be found on the current Su Baili.
Yu Shujin’s deep, dark eyes closely watched Su Baili’s every move.
Su Baili suddenly embraced Su Qingqing, throwing away the dagger in Su Qingqing’s hand with lightning speed, and then harshly slapped Su Qingqing.
Xu Yinyu was violently pulled into another person’s arms, and the ropes on her body were cut open with a sharp blade.
The emotion of having something lost and regained overwhelmed Yu Shujin’s entire heart.
Yu Shujin reached out and stroked Xu Yinyu’s swollen cheek. Her cold fingers trembled slightly. Then she used her thumb to wipe away the blood trickling from Xu Yinyu’s neck. Her eyes scanned every inch of Xu Yinyu’s body without missing anything. Only after a thorough check did she finally sigh, her voice already carrying a fragile choke. “It’s alright, A-Yu. It’s alright.”
Xu Yinyu’s nose stung. Her heart instantly softened, her eyes swelled, and tears were on the verge of spilling.
“Chi Xia, take A-Yu to the car.” Yu Shujin helped Xu Yinyu stand up. She tried her best to maintain a gentle expression toward Xu Yinyu, suppressing her madness. “A-Yu, wait for me in a safe place. I’ll be quick.”
At this moment, Xu Yinyu didn’t want Yu Shujin to disappear from her sight, but after meeting Yu Shujin’s eyes, she subconsciously nodded.
After settling Xu Yinyu, Yu Shujin quickly took control of the scene. Her people had already apprehended Su Qingqing, Su Baili, and several accomplices.
Su Qingqing saw Yu Shujin, looking like the Devil descending from hell, walking toward Su Baili. Her eyes widened instantly, and she screamed heart-wrenchingly. “Yu Shujin! No, you can’t! My sister didn’t provoke you. Don’t involve the innocent!”
“Innocent? Is your sister innocent? Was Xu Yinyu innocent?” Yu Shujin’s slap was fierce, showing no mercy. Although directed at Su Baili, her words were for Su Qingqing. “Su Qingqing, the Su family’s reputation was ruined by me. If you want revenge, you’d better clearly identify your target.”
Su Baili looked at Yu Shujin with a numb expression, blood spilling from her lips. She moved her lips. “Let Qingqing go. I beg you… President Yu.”
Yu Shujin’s face was cold, her twisted, sinister gaze shifting to Su Qingqing.
Xu Yinyu hadn’t been sitting in the car long before the door was suddenly opened. Yu Shujin’s eyes were full of heartache. She took the first-aid kit from Chi Xia and placed Xu Yinyu’s rope-reddened wrists in her palm, patiently and gently applying medicine.
Xu Yinyu settled her chaotic, dizzy mind. “You, what did you do to them?”
Yu Shujin’s hand, applying the medicine to Xu Yinyu, trembled slightly. She truthfully informed her, “Nothing. I just scared them.”
Xu Yinyu nodded. She met Yu Shujin’s sincere, earnest gaze. “Thank you.”
Yu Shujin wiped away the tears at the corner of Xu Yinyu’s eyes, her fingers very light, as if handling a fragile, precious artifact. “Don’t cry, A-Yu.”
Xu Yinyu was overcome with residual fear. She grabbed Yu Shujin’s hands, as if confirming something.
Yu Shujin hugged Xu Yinyu tightly. “I won’t let anything happen to you in front of me.”
Xu Yinyu’s nose was sore. Her heart felt like it was blocked by a stone, unable to move up or down, making her extremely sad. “Lunatic… Why would you joke about cutting off your own hand…”
Yu Shujin patted Xu Yinyu’s shoulder, trying to reassure her. “It was just to trick her. I’m fine, aren’t I? Look at me properly again.”
Xu Yinyu lifted her head from Yu Shujin’s shoulder, searching inch by inch for injuries on Yu Shujin. In fact, her possessiveness toward Yu Shujin was not diminished at all. She just didn’t understand it when she was younger, and she didn’t have the standing when she was young. Now, seeing Yu Shujin’s determination to make choices for her sake,
Xu Yinyu finally dared to confirm her own feelings and Yu Shujin’s sincerity. At the same time, she was both scared and heartbroken. The indifference she had painstakingly faked before was now shattered by her own turbulent emotions.
