Chapter 48: Feigned Letting Go – In Reality, Grandly Pursuing His Wife
Xu Yinyu sheepishly withdrew her hand and met Yu Shujin’s gaze.
“My period pain isn’t that bad anymore.”
Yu Shujin placed the juice bottle next to her own hand. “It will still hurt if you drink it.”
Yu Shujin’s sudden gentleness left Xu Yinyu no choice but to accept it, since she had already disclosed all her thoughts and emotions to the other party anyway.
Until both of them put down their chopsticks, Yu Shujin did not speak again. Xu Yinyu then got up and left, returning to the master bedroom without saying another word to Yu Shujin.
Yu Shujin sat in place, watching Xu Yinyu’s retreating back. She knew the resentment buried in Xu Yinyu’s heart had not been completely covered by the passage of time.
After Xu Yinyu finished washing up, she heard scattered sounds coming from the living room. Her eyes lowered, and she glanced through the slightly ajar door crack.
She actually saw Yu Shujin get up and leave the living room. Xu Yinyu padded to the bedroom window on bare feet and looked out.
Yu Shujin had actually left. Xu Yinyu breathed a sigh of relief, but her lips were pressed tightly together.
“This is what I wanted,” Xu Yinyu said to herself.
She quickly dried her damp long hair and got into bed. She expected to fall asleep quickly, given the massive emotional exhaustion of the day.
However, Xu Yinyu rarely stayed awake all night, observing the changing dawn light.
“Xu, did you not sleep well yesterday?” Lina walked to Xu Yinyu’s office with some documents, knocked on the door with her knuckles, and looked up, meeting the gaze of the sleepless Xu Yinyu.
The dark circles under her eyes were very noticeable against her fair skin.
Xu Yinyu rubbed her aching forehead. “Yes. Is it that obvious how tired my face is?”
“But still gorgeous,” Lina said with a smile, placing the documents she got from the General Manager on Xu Yinyu’s desk. She kindly reminded her, “By the way, Xu, General Manager Cheng asked you to come to her office. She has something to tell you.”
Xu Yinyu nodded. She guessed the General Manager wanted her to report on the implementation progress of the Q2 project.
“Lina, could you please call Victoria for me?” Xu Yinyu remembered yesterday’s events and was contemplating how to explain things to Victoria.
“Sure,” Lina readily agreed.
Xu Yinyu thanked her. “Thank you.”
A moment later, Xu Yinyu felt a cool breeze blow through her office. She looked up and saw Victoria closing the door, looking upset. “What is it!”
Xu Yinyu motioned for Victoria to sit down and said slowly, “I want to treat you and Lila to dinner tonight. Do you have time?”
Victoria crossed her arms and scoffed. “Treat me to dinner? Your wife will find trouble with you, Xu.”
Xu Yinyu remembered Yu Shujin’s promise yesterday. “I won’t do anything you dislike now if you refuse.”
Victoria’s throat tightened. “Friend? You only treat me as a friend?”
Xu Yinyu nodded without finding anything wrong. “A friend I don’t want to lose.”
Victoria’s heart trembled. Xu Yinyu’s single word “friend” was colder than the harsh words Yu Shujin had spoken to her.
“I treat you as a friend, but I have never treated you as one,” Victoria admitted frankly, her eyes turning red with intense emotion.
Xu Yinyu was slightly stunned, but being accustomed to loss and betrayal, she wasn’t overly shocked. She lowered her head and said flatly, “I see.”
“I have always seen you as the person I love.” Victoria confessed to Xu Yinyu again, this time without the youthful naivety of the last time, only intense affection remained.
Xu Yinyu’s expression froze. “You…”
“If I didn’t like you, why would I worry about whether someone was targeting you? And why would I repeatedly disregard my own safety to help you? Xu, did you truly not notice my feelings? Can’t you see my sincerity?”
Only now did Xu Yinyu belatedly understand everything. She had thought the previous rejection had moved Victoria from the position of a secret admirer back to the distance of a normal friend, and she had always treated the other party as a friend, never crossing any boundary.
“Victoria,” an apologetic look flashed in Xu Yinyu’s eyes. “I’m sorry.”
Victoria nodded slightly. “I understand. This is it for us.”
Xu Yinyu knew that dinner was off, and her hard-won friend in this foreign land, Victoria, was also gone. Her mood was inexplicably heavy.
She no longer had any motivation to work. Her expressionless face was exceptionally cold and detached, a freezing kind of beauty.
Xu Yinyu got up and walked to the General Manager’s office, intending to use General Manager Cheng to stimulate her mood and motivate herself. “General Manager Cheng, you asked for me?”
Xu Yinyu knocked on the door. After hearing a “Come in,” she pushed the door open.
Sitting in the General Manager’s chair was a face more purely Chinese than Xu Yinyu’s. Her dark eyes slowly moved from the documents to Xu Yinyu. Her voice was cool, like a reserved spring. “Yinyu, please sit.”
Xu Yinyu obediently sat in front of Cheng Yunsheng. Her head was cloudy this morning, and she forgot to bring her glasses, so she habitually squinted when looking at people.
“Yinyu looks very young without her glasses today,” Cheng Yunsheng examined Xu Yinyu. She pulled a thin sheet of paper from a stack of documents and motioned for Xu Yinyu to stand and take it.
Xu Yinyu smiled, took the document, and her expression showed slight surprise. “Going to China to promote and attract investment?”
“That’s right,” Cheng Yunsheng raised an eyebrow. “The planning and process of the Q2 project were entirely developed by you. No one understands its creativity better than you.
Moreover, as fellow Chinese, you understand the cultural composition of China better. It will be easier for you to communicate and promote the project there.
Xu Yin, I trust you.”
Cheng Yunsheng’s words carried weight and expectation, seeming like purely professional sentiment from a superior to a subordinate.
Xu Yinyu recalled Yu Shujin’s retreating figure yesterday and carefully read the contract again. As Cheng Yunsheng said, all matters concerning the Q2 project had been pushed forward step-by-step under her supervision, like a child she had poured her heart into nurturing.
No one would willingly give up their position when their “child” was about to gain fame and fortune, handing their hard work to someone else.
Cheng Yunsheng’s phone suddenly flashed. Xu Yinyu’s vision was blurry, and she didn’t see the familiar profile picture that appeared on the screen.
“Thank you for your trust, General Manager Cheng,” Xu Yinyu stood up and bowed. “I will strive to promote the Q2 project in my hometown.”
Cheng Yunsheng nodded, signaling. “You can take a few days off at home. You can fly directly to the HM branch in China this Sunday. Let them assist you in launching the project promotion. Remember, contact me immediately with any questions regarding the project promotion.”
Xu Yinyu nodded, then closed the door and left.
After Xu Yinyu left, Cheng Yunsheng clicked on the voice call. Her gentle tone suddenly dropped, laced with suppressed anger. “Yu Shujin, what do you want to do now?”
“Did she agree?” Yu Shujin started barrage calling Cheng Yunsheng as soon as she landed.
Cheng Yunsheng raised an eyebrow lightly. “Why don’t you guess yourself if she would agree?”
“Stop wasting time, Cheng Yunsheng.” A gusting, surging wind could be heard from the other end of the line.
“I don’t have patience for you. The status of your Cheng family isn’t looking good right now.”
The meaning was heavy with threat.
Cheng Yunsheng’s teeth felt weak. Her voice became polite. “Just a joke, President Yu. The little Xu Yinyu naturally didn’t escape your masterful plan.”
After getting the answer she wanted, Yu Shujin swiftly ended the call.
Cheng Yunsheng looked tired. She mumbled, “Truly a pain.”
“Achoo!” Xu Yinyu, wearing a heavy down jacket, still couldn’t ward off the cold wind. She waited alone at the deserted airport.
The plane had landed an hour ago. Xu Yinyu called the branch company’s president, inquiring about airport pickup and accommodation arrangements, only to hear two words: “Just wait.”
She waited until now, as night fell. Xu Yinyu reluctantly decided to find a hotel around the branch company and then call a taxi.
A short while later, a low-profile luxury sedan sped from a distance and stopped right in front of Xu Yinyu.
Xu Yinyu’s eyelid twitched. If the taxi she was waiting for hadn’t been white, she would have instinctively stepped forward and gotten in.
She did not proactively get in; she even deliberately backed up two steps.
The car door opened by itself.
Xu Yinyu pulled at the upright fur collar of her down jacket and silently turned her face away.
“Get in the car,” Yu Shujin repeated softly. “Xu Yinyu.”
Xu Yinyu met Yu Shujin’s gaze. “Then you better leave quickly. Don’t miss your schedule.”
Chi Xia, sitting in the driver’s seat, had a dark expression, so irritated by this light sentence that she felt like spitting blood.
“Let’s go,” Yu Shujin said to Chi Xia.
Chi Xia’s eyes flashed with a hint of surprise. She immediately pressed the button to close the car door, fearing Yu Shujin would regret the change of plans.
After leaving the airport, Yu Shujin took out her phone and asked Cheng Yunsheng, “Yunsheng, does your company not cover airport pickup and accommodation for employees on business trips?”
Cheng Yunsheng raised a confused eyebrow. “How could that be? Our formal employees have very generous benefits.”
Cheng Yunsheng recalled the relationship between Xu Yinyu and Yu Shujin and tentatively asked, “Did Xu Yinyu tell you that?”
Yu Shujin said, “She didn’t tell me. I saw it with my own eyes. The video should be sent to your email in three minutes. Remember to check it.”
“I need an explanation from you regarding this matter.”
Before Cheng Yunsheng could figure out what explanation Yu Shujin wanted, Yu Shujin hung up the phone again.
When Lina delivered documents to the General Manager’s office, she saw General Manager Cheng’s usually calm expression looking unusually anxious. “General Manager Cheng, what’s wrong?”
General Manager Cheng looked up from her desk. Seeing Xu Yinyu in the cold wind, her expression was desolate for a moment, and she sighed inwardly. “I’m worried about Xu Yinyu.”
Lina thought General Manager Cheng was afraid Xu Yinyu couldn’t handle the crucial task of project promotion alone, so she kindly advised, “General Manager Cheng, don’t worry about Xu. She is capable and definitely won’t disappoint you.”
Cheng Yunsheng laughed briefly, waving her off, signaling her to leave, but Lina suddenly grabbed her hand.
Cheng Yunsheng’s originally cold fingers were encased in a warm palm.
Cheng Yunsheng’s eyelids twitched twice. She suppressed the annoyance and anger in her heart, politely urging the person to leave her sight immediately.
Sure enough, before the driver could pick up Xu Yinyu, the airport closed.
Xu Yinyu had assumed her night would end with her sleeping rough in the cold street, but she was unexpectedly encountered by a kind cleaner. The cleaner enthusiastically pulled Xu Yinyu into the airport reception room and even got her a cup of hot water.
